Samsung & LG’s Withdrawal from LCD market will bring opportunities for Chinese companies

South Korea display giants LG and Samsung recently announced plans to halt production of LCD panels by the end of the year. The companies are poised to focus on OLED panels production from next year. This development is viewed as a good one in China as it is expected to open up more opportunities for domestic companies.

In a recent CCTV financial dialogue program, TCL founder and chairman Li Dongsheng aligned with this point of view. He stated that from a strategic perspective, Samsung and LG’s withdrawal from the LCD industry will bring opportunities to Chinese companies. He believes the reason for the withdrawal has to do with an adjustment to the global industry structure. In clear terms, the industry is moving away from LCD and rapidly toward the use of OLED panels. Both South Korea giants will focus more on flexible display products such as QLED and OLED technology.

Chinese companies have already established a dominant position in LCD manufacture, especially in large-screen displays. Chinese manufacturers, including BOE, Huaxing Optoelectronics (a subsidiary of TCL Holdings) and so on dominate the LCD market. Li expects this advantage to be further expanded with future development.

Despite their dominance in the large-display LCD industry, the Chinese firms are expected to face greater competitive pressure and challenges in small and medium screens. In the small and medium-sized field, including OLED and the next generation of new display technology, there will be stiff competition.

Samsung was once a leading force in the LCD panel market. The company established two LCD panel factories in China and two LCD production lines in South Korea. However, stiff competition in the LCD market in recent years and a drop in LCD panel prices may have prompted the tech giant’s decision to abandon the LCD panel market.

Apple may also launch the iPhone SE Plus, trusted tipster hints

Jon Prosser was recently described by Macworld as “the Apple rumourmonger who hasn’t missed yet”. Sure thing, the tipster burst into the scene not too long ago and was accurate about so many things regarding the iPhone SE including the exact launch date. The tipster has now suggested that Apple may have got an iPhone SE Plus in the works and promises to deliver some information on the Plus size variant soon.

Apple iPhone SE (2020)
Apple iPhone SE (2020)

The iPhone SE was launched on April 15 featuring a design similar to the iPhone 8. The launch of the model which is powered by the latest A13 Bionic chipset resulted in the discontinuation o the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus sales. This is another indication that a larger display variant of the iPhone SE may be launched as a replacement for the iPhone 8 Plus.

It was previously reported that the “iPhone SE Plus” moniker was spotted in the iOS 14 program code. Thus, throwing up the possibility of its existence. The iPhone 8 Plus is equipped with a 5.5-inch display and we expect the upcoming model to feature the same screen size. The model is also expected to packs dual camera setup at the rear.

We should point out that nothing is confirmed at the moment so take this piece of information with a pinch of salt.

Xiaomi to soon revamp the Camera UI for its smartphones, shares two possible options

The product director of the Xiaomi camera department has recently revealed that the company is working on an overhaul/revamp of its Camera UI for smartphones. The official shared two current options, which include sliding gestures alongside swipes to left or right for various functions.

Xiaomi

Option A: The first option is a slide out function for the “More” function through a gesture. This allows users to bring up more panels at any time. However, its downside is that it’s a bit harder to get used to, so it can be useful once users are acclimatized to it.

Option B: The second is relatively simpler and will just have an additional tab named “More” added to the UI. This would basically require just a single tap an is a relatively common feature with no visible downfalls.

Xiaomi

Notably, Lei Jun, the CEO of Xiaomi, has also reposted the original post through his official Weibo account as well, a Chinese microblogging website. The senior executive even commented on the development and added his own opinions as well. He chose Option B and asked people about their thoughts since it is originally meant to be a sort of an online poll. So let us also know in the comments section down below regarding which of the two options is more comfortable to have implemented.

Huawei Nova 7 Leaks in a Mirror Grey Finish (again)

Huawei has scheduled an event on April 23 to launch the Nova 7 series. Like any other smartphone, it is being leaked ahead of its official release. Even the company itself posted a teaser video revealing the design. Now, a new set of images of Huawei Nova 7 with Mirror Grey finish has emerged on Weibo comparing with it with a  Pink colour variant of Huawei P40 Pro.

These comparison shots were posted by a user called Song Jingting on Weibo. This is the same Huawei Nova 7 Mirror Grey variant, which was leaked a couple of days back exposing not only the design but also the specifications of the smartphone.

The Mirror Grey variant of Huawei Nova 7 stands out in the pictures alongside the dull Pink color version of Huawei P40 Pro. It is reflective as well as shiny with line patterns coming out from the rectangular camera array located at the top left corner of the handset’s back.

According to previous leaks, the Huawei Nova 7 series will include a standard Nova 7,  a high-end Nova 7 Pro, and a low-end Nova 7 SE. They are expected to be powered by the company’s in-house HiSilicon Kirin 985, Kirin 990, and Kirin 820 respectively. Xiaomi to launch the Redmi K30i, a Cheaper K30 5G variant: Rumor

Xiaomi is rumored to be gearing up for the launch of the Redmi K30i. The device in question is a more affordable variant of the regular K30 5G. The rumor first broke out on Twitter, by @Xiaomishka.

Despite the recent pandemic, it seems that Xiaomi and Redmi are still going ahead with smartphone launches. The Chinese tech giant is apparently looking to further expand its Redmi K30 lineup, which consists of the Redmi K30, Redmi K30 5G, Redmi K30 Pro and Redmi K30 Pro Zoom. The Redmi K30i is the latest that is rumored to join the series but will basically be the entry level, being even cheaper than the base 4G variant of the K30.

Unfortunately, finer details regarding the device is currently unknown, but Xiaomishka did share certain information regarding the K30i as well. According to a tweet shared, the Redmi K30i will essentially serve as the “Lite” variant, and will thus feature a 48 megapixel primary rear sensor over the 64 megapixel one found on the K30 5G. We can expect other specs to see a small cut as well, to reduce the overall costs.

Xiaomi Redmi K30 5g
Redmi K30 5G

Speaking of cost, it is also rumored that the Redmi K30i will launch for a price of around 1,799 Yuan (this roughly translates to about 254 US Dollars). At the moment, other internals are still at large but other rumors have pointed at MediaTek’s Dimensity 800 SoC replacing the Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. This will allow the device to be cheap but still support 5G networking.

KFC to launch a new tech product, maybe similar to McDonald’s

Earlier this month, McDonald’s had announced that it would be launching a new 5G product. However, what the actual product turned out to be was a special fried chicken, with 5G only being used as a buzzword. Now, KFC seems to be following the same strategy, as it announced the launch of a new tech product as well.

KFC

The announcement was made on the official Weibo account, a Chinese microblogging website, of Kentucky Fried Chicken. In the announcement, the fast food giant also shared an image poster. This featured the fried chicken box that is iconic to the company, although it was green in color over the typical red, and featured what resembles a small charger.

Looking at the image, the KFC box features a small outlet that carries a charger/ handle that seems like the kind you’d find in a gas station or power stations for electric cars. This is further emphasized with a sports car being partially visible in the back. Unfortunately, it is currently unknown what the company actually has in store for us, since McDonald’s pulled a late April fool’s joke on everyone.

KFC
McDonald’s fried chicken that was teased to be a 5G product

Thus, it might just be a new form of fried chicken for the Chinese market or we may even see a small tech product. Who knows, maybe KFC decides to ship a small toy car that can be charged via the electric pump, like toys found in a McDonald’s Happy Meal. But take these speculations with a grain of salt for now.

[Update: Confirmed] MIUI to get TÜV Rheinland Certification ahead of MIUI 12 Release

Update

Huang Longzhong, the operations director of Xiaomi confirmed the TÜV Rheinland is indeed for MIUI 12 on his official Weibo account. Below listed is a screenshot of his quoted post. Going by the previous report, we can expect the official announcement of Xiaomi’s new mobile OS to happen by the end of this month.

Huang Longzhong MIUI 12 Confirmation

Original Story

Xiaomi has been long-rumored to release the MIUI 12. A new report from earlier today suggests that it will be announced by the end of April. Amidst this, the official Weibo account of TÜV Rheinland teases a world’s first certification for MIUI. Quoting this post, Wang Teng, the product director of Redmi further teases the upcoming certification to be for MIUI 12.

MIUI TUV Rheinland

We have come across multiple rumors and leaks of MIUI 12 over the past few weeks. But this teaser is unique as the 10-year-old Xiaomi mobile software is finally getting its TÜV Rheinland certification. In fact, this is the first time we are hearing about the 148-years-old German safety monitoring firm to certify a mobile operating system.

TÜV Rheinland is known for certifying displays on certain smartphones for eye comfort. Almost all Huawei and Honor smartphones launched in recent times wield this certification. Even Xiaomi joined this bandwagon with the Redmi Note 8 Pro. Now, the company’s MIUI software is expected to get a similar treatment.

But it is not sure which version of MIUI will be certified by the German company. MIUI 11 is now 7 months old and we are already seeing strong evidence of MIUI 12 to be in the development phase with an early release schedule than ever before in recent years. Also, the announcement of  MIUI 12 will mark the 10th anniversary of Xiaomi’s mobile software and even its existence.

Redmi Wang Teng MIUI 12 Tease TUV Rheinland

Thus, when TÜV Rheinland posted about certification for MIUI, the Redmi product director Wang Teng jumped into further hype to make-believe his followers the certification is indeed for MIUI 12. We aren’t sure if he is being sarcastic but if he’s serious, then we believe MIUI 12 announcement may happen very soon.

Xiaomi 65W GaN charger sale suspended due to potential vulnerability

When Xiaomi launched its current flagship Mi 10 series, the company also unveiled its new 65W fast charger that utilized gallium nitride technology (or GaN). However, recent reports have revealed that the new fast charger is not available on multiple platforms, and the reason for this could be a potential vulnerability.

Xiaomi GaN 65W charger

According to a new report, Xiaomi’s smartphone department received a risk reminder from a 3rd party security team. This team stated that the Xiaomi 65W fast charger is technically vulnerable at the moment. The product uses a rewritable eFlash / MTP chip to fix potential problems and updates the charging protocol. However, this entire firmware is unencrypted, meaning there is a possibility for hackers to modify it.

In other words, hackers can potentially cause a very high voltage output, which runs the risk of damage to the product or worse the customer. Thus, Xiaomi has officially removed its 65W GaN fast charger from different platforms where it is on sale, citing emergency reasons. It has also been taken away from shelves of offline physical stores as well.

Xiaomi GaN Type-C 65W Charger

Notably, users need not worry about an explosion or their devices catching fire since the smartphone also features overvoltage protection. Current gen handsets have a protection state of intermittent charging or no charging. Thus, if the voltage crosses 20V, the built in OVP will kick in to protect the hardware inside the smartphone. Although, peripheral accessories like headphones may get damaged due to this. Xiaomi is expected to be working on fixing this issue currently, and it’s after sales service for users can be contacted for more information.

OPPO VP Brian Shen resigns citing personal health reasons

OPPO’s Brian Shen is a popular name among Chinese tech enthusiasts. He often revealed key features of the upcoming OPPO smartphones and talked about the brand’s new technologies. However, earlier today, Brian Shen announced that he was resigning from his post as the president of global marketing and chief marketing officer of OPPO’s Mainland China business citing personal health reasons.

OPPO Brian Shen
OPPO Brian Shen (Source: OPPO Website)

Brian didn’t elaborate on his resignation and we are not sure whether he’ll be back to working at OPPO in any other position. But judging from OPPO’s official statement, it looks like Brian will be taking a break from work.

“Current president of global marketing Brian Shen Yiren will step down from his position due to personal health reasons,” OPPO said in a statement on its website. “We look forward to him returning to the Oppo family.”

Liu Lie, who currently serves as OPPO’s brand director, will take his place as the global marketing president as well as CMO for Mainland China. Liu will report directly to OPPO’s founder and CEO Tony Chen. Liu has been an essential part of OPPO since 2004 and helped create sub-brands such as the OPPO Find and Real series.

Brian’s resignation comes at a time when OPPO is battling Coronavirus across its key markets. While things are slowly getting back to normal in Mainland China, other important markets like India are still in a state of lockdown. And with the sales of smartphones halted, OPPO and other phone makers are looking at zero smartphone sales for the month of April in several markets such as India.

MIUI 12 could be announced by the end of April

There have been a number of rumors and leaks regarding MIUI 12 over the past few weeks. Even some of the changes were teased by the brand itself, whereas few leaked through beta versions of MIUI system apps like MiSettings and MIUI Themes. The rumours do not seem to stop as a new one has just emerged suggesting Xiaomi will release MIUI 12 by the end of April.

MIUI 12

Xiaomi started as a software company with its MIUI Android skin in 2010. Only, a year later, it started manufacturing smartphones and ventured into other businesses as years passed by. The upcoming MIUI 12 will mark the 10th anniversary of MIUI and thus fans around the world are expecting big changes this year.

Earlier in January, the Chinese tech giant confirmed the existence of MIUI 12 but did not reveal anything about it. But as the days went by, new information about the company’s next iteration of mobile software kept popping up every other week. We got to see an alleged release schedule, a report saying Xiaomi stopped development for MIUI 11 beta builds, a list of eligible devices for MIUI 12, changes that are coming in MIUI 12, and revamped Settings as well as MIUI Themes app.

MIUI 12 Release April End

The new rumor originated when Digital Chat Station, a well-known Chinese tipster posted a screenshot on Weibo, which seems to be of the Chinese Mi Community app. In the picture, we can see a dedicated section for MIUI 12 and a toast message at the bottom saying ‘registrations for MIUI will begin in 11 days’. Since this screengrab is from yesterday, the registrations for whatever Xiaomi is planning for MIUI will start in 10 days. That means by the end of April or early May.

Additionally, another Weibo user going by the name of @Geek_Cao posted that MIUI 12 will be released on the 27th or 28th of April. To that, Li Chuangqi, the senior product director of Xiaomi denied by quoting “Not what I said, I did not leak” (translated from Chinese). Also, that user has now deleted his post leaving us to believe Digital Chat Station’s tip as it is legit since the information comes directly from Mi Community.

Further, as per reports by Chinese media, the MIUI 12 release will coincide with the launch of Redmi Note 9 series in China. The Redmi Note 9 is expected to have a 5G version powered by MediaTek Dimensity 800 SoC with an integrated 5G modem, which also happens to power the newly announced Oppo A92S.

Huawei Founder: I’m just a puppet leader, not a spiritual one

Ren Zhengfei, the Founder and CEO of Huawei Technologies, recently stated a few interesting points regarding his position in the company in an interview with South China Morning Post. He said that he is not a spiritual leader of Huawei, but rather a puppet leader.

Zhengfei Ren, Huawei founder and CEO
Zhengfei Ren, Huawei founder and CEO

According to the senior executive, he hopes to be forgotten over time and his biggest wish “is to drink coffee in a cafe unnoticed.” Ren Zhengfei went on to say that “I’m just an old man. What’s the point of remembering me? People should think more about the future and the world.” This is easier said than done considering his position in the Chinese tech giant, which is also currently in the epicenter of the US and China trade wars.

In recent times, Huawei has been facing numerous complications and hindrances by the US government. This led to Ren to finally stepping out from his management position behind the stages and take the reigns of the company again after years. Back in 2019, the company faced a trade ban in the US, causing it to be blacklisted from buying or selling goods to US based companies. Earlier this year, the US tried to further hamper Huawei’s situation by limiting its chip supply through TSMC, the largest contract chip manufacturer.

Huawei

Despite certain long time employees calling Ren “the definite leader, the spiritual leader in Huawei,” he considers himself to be just a puppet to the Rotating Chairmen. In Huawei’s top brass, there are three Rotating Chairman that cycle between one another to lead the company. The constant cycling is done to prevent ideas and creativity to lower under single management and apparently Ren abides by them as well.

Alleged Huawei Nova 7 and Nova 7 Pro 5G benchmarked on Geekbench

Huawei will be launching the Nova 7 series of smartphone in China on April 23. Recent reports have revealed that the series include Kirin 820 5G powered Nova 7 SE phone, Kirin 985 powered Nova 7 5G and the flagship Nova 7 Pro 5G with Kirin 990 5G. The specifications of the Nova 7 series smartphones were revealed over the weekend through their leaked live shots. Two new phones with model numbers HNB-AN00 and NEY-AN00 have appeared on Geekbench benchmarking platform. These phones appear to be the upcoming Nova 7 and Nova 7 Pro smartphones.

Huawei NEY-AN00 – Could it be Huawei Nova 7 Pro 5G?

The newly spotted NEY-AN00 Huawei smartphone is equipped with 5G connectivity. The Kirin SoC that fuels it has a base frequency of 1.95GHz which indicates that it could be fueled by the Kirin 990 5G SoC. This suggests that the NEY-AN00 may be the Nova 7 Pro 5GT smartphone.Alleged-Huawei-Nova-7-Pro-5G-Geekbench

The NEY-AN00 has 8 GB of RAM and it runs on Android 10 OS. In the Geekbench 5’s single-core and multi-core tests, it scored 753 and 2899 points, respectively.

Huawei HNB-AN10 – Could it be Huawei Nova 7 5G?

The HNB-AN00 Huawei phone recorded 655 in the single-core test of Geekbench 5. The handset achieved a scored of 2326 in the multi-core test. The smartphone is loaded with Android 10 OS and it has 8 GB of RAM.

Alleged-Huawei-Nova-7-5G-Geekbench

The base frequency of the Kirin 5G chipset that power the HNB-AN00 is 1.84GHz. It seems to be the Kirin 985 chipset. Hence, it seems that the HNB-AN10 phone could be the Kirin 985 powered Nova 7 5G.

Xiaomi Mi 10 Youth Edition might Launch in China soon

Xiaomi launched the Mi 10 series of flagship smartphones consisting of Mi 10 5G and Mi 10 Pro 5G in mid-February in China. The handsets then made their way to the European market in late March with a new member called Mi 10 Lite 5G. Now, it seems this device will also launch in the company’s home country as the Mi 10 Youth Edition.

According to IT Home, the Mi Community in China has opened a new discussion thread for ‘Mi 10 Youth Edition’. This clearly indicates the newest version of Mi 10 to soon debut in China. When it does, it will be the second Snapdragon 765-powered smartphone from the house of Xiaomi, the first one being Redmi K30 5G, which just recently received a price cut.

The Mi 10 Lite or Youth Edition (China) comes equipped with a 6.57-inches FHD+ AMOLED panel with an in-display fingerprint sensor. On the back, the phone features a quad-camera setup in a matrix array at the top left corner. The setup includes a 48MP primary sensor paired with an 8MP ultra-wide camera, a 5MP macro unit, and a 2MP depth sensor. Whereas, the front camera is of 16 megapixels which sit comfortably in the dew-drop notch at the top center of the display.

The new Xiaomi device weighs 192 grams and measures 7.98mm in thickness with a 4,160 mAh battery powering it. The phone runs MIUI 11 based on Android 10 and is available in three colour options namely Blue, Black, and White respectively. The handset comes in two storage configurations – 6GB + 128GB and 8GB + 128GB and starts at €349.

Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite 5G

Anyway, the Mi 10 Youth Edition may cost lesser in China and may even have a different storage configuration to further lower the price just like what OnePlus did with the OnePlus 8 series price in India.
