Stable Android 10 (Funtouch OS 10) update is now live for Vivo Nex 3 5G

Vivo Nex 3 5G was launched in September of 2019 with Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC paired with Snapdragon X50 5G modem. The phone came with Functouch OS 9 based on Android Pie out of the box. But now, it is finally receiving stable Android 10-based Funtouch OS 10 update.

The Chinese smartphone maker started beta testing Android 10 on Vivo Nex 3 5G last month. Now, within a month, the company has started rolling out stable Funtouch OS 10 update for all the regular users of the phone.

Vivo announced Functouch OS 10 in December and even revealed the list of eligible devices for the update. The Nex 3 5G is one of the devices in the first batch to receive the update. As promised, the company is finally delivering a stable update to all the units of the device.

Anyway, just like any other OTA update, it is being rolled out in a phased manner. Hence, it might take time to reach every unit of the Nex 3 5G. Also, do note that this update is only being seeded out to the devices with model number V1924A.

The Functouch OS 10 stable update based on Android 10 for the Vivo Nex 3 5G bumps up the build version to 6.10.1 with March 2020 security patch.

Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum Cleaner to launch in India on April 17

Xiaomi, the most popular smartphone brand in India, is looking to diversify its home appliances and smart product range in India. The Chinese tech giant already has a strong base for its smartphone department, but it plans on expanding further. The company recently announced that it will be launching its Mi Robot Vacuum cleaner in India tomorrow (17th April 2020).

In a tweet from the official Mi India Twitter handle, Xiaomi announced the arrival of its new smart home product for the Indian market. The tweet read, “How many times do you clean your house every day? What if you could do it, without actually doing it yourself? #SmartCleaning solution for your smart home launching tomorrow. Any guesses, Mi fans?”

Xiaomi had originally launched the Mi Robot Vacuum cleaner back in 2016, in its home country, China. Samsung faces the lowest operation rates ever in its entire history

Samsung, the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer, is facing the lowest operation rate ever in its entire history. Despite being one of the largest consumer grade electronics maker and a major multinational brand, the effects of the Coronavirus pandemic has severely crippled its operations.

According to reports, the South Korean tech giant has halved its smartphone manufacturing. The company even had to temporarily shut down various factories and offline stores across the globe, due to the various government enforcing local lockdowns. For those unaware, a new strand of Coronavirus has caused a global pandemic, leading governments to shut down various factories and production lines. This has affected various fields including the smartphone industry.

ETNews have reported that Samsung might be facing an all time low of its operation rates in the Q2 of 2020. Furthermore, the closed factories will also lead to increased fixed costs, lower production output, lower sales, and dropped revenues. As it stands right now, raising the production will only make inventories pile up, as the company already has stocks remaining from previous months.

At the moment, it seems like the global economy is heading for a recession, which in turn makes people less likely to spend on things that are considered non-essential. Additionally, it is expected that the closure and lockdowns will extend by another month at the very least.

Yesterday (15th April 2020), Honor, the Huawei subsidiary, had unveiled the company’s latest mobile processor, the Kirin 985 SoC. The chipset is an octa core processor and is 5G enabled. Now, George Zhao, the President of Honor, has stated that the chipset will be positioned between the flagship Kirin 990 and mid range Kirin 820 chipset, and will be aimed at device priced under 3000 Yuan (roughly 420 US Dollars).

The HiSilicon Kirin 985 5G chipset has been proprietarily developed and is the third 5G ready mobile processor that the company has launched. In an interview, the senior Honor official answered questions regarding its newly launched chip. According to George, the Kirin 985 SoC is meant to act as a bridge and fill the gap between the Kirin 990 and Kirin 820.

The processor is a flagship unit and will be shipped with devices carrying a price tag under 3,000 Yuan. Nokia 9.3 PureView color variants hinted by HMD Global CPO

Last year, HMD Global became the first company to launch the Nokia 9 PureView as the world’s first phone with penta-lens setup. The camera capabilities of the phone weren’t very impressive, and it was driven by the older Snapdragon 845 chipset.  The rumor mill has been consistently spilling information on the successor phone that is expected to debut as Nokia 9.3 PureView. Recent reports have claimed that it may debut along with Nokia 7.3 in Q3 2020. Some of the key details of the phone have also surfaced in the recent weeks. HMD Global Chief Product Officer, Juho Sarvikas has hinted the color variants of the Nokia 9.3 PureView.

A Twitter account that is known for credible leaks on Nokia phones carried out a poll on the expected color editions of the Nokia 9.3 PureView. Surprisingly, Sarvikas not only acknowledged the poll but also, he stated that he prefers Polar Night color and a copper-like light and bold color. Since the CPO of the company is himself is talking about the color variants of the Nokia 9 PureView, the handset may arrive in the suggested colors.

LineageOS adds support for Exynos Galaxy S9 / S9 Plus, Galaxy Note 9, and Realme 2 Pro

LineageOS, the most-popular aftermarket Android distribution was recently updated to version 17.1 based on Android 10. When it happened, a number of devices soon garnered official support and we even made an entire list of official devices back then. Now, the Exynos Galaxy S9 / Galaxy S9 Plus and Galaxy Note 9 has been added to the list, in addition to Realme 2 Pro, however, it only supports LineageOS 16 for now. 

The Exynos-powered Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9 Plus, and Galaxy Note 9 have been lately receiving unofficial builds of LineageOS 17.1 by a number of developers on the XDA Developers forum. But now, these devices are now finally receiving official builds for the first time. For comparison, the LineageOS project still does not support the Snapdragon variant of these smartphones yet.

The officially supported LineageOS 17.1 Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9 Plus, and Galaxy Note 9 models are as listed below.

As mentioned earlier, the Realme 2 Pro (RMX1801) is also now officially supported by LineageOS project. But unlike the above-mentioned Samsung devices, the builds are limited to LineageOS 16 based on Android Pie. Hopefully, it will gain support for LineageOS 17.1 once the company rolls out the stable Realme UI update to it.

Sadly, the legendary Redmi Note 4, well-known in the custom ROM community has been dropped support for LineageOS as the maintainer no longer has the device with him.

iPhone SE 2020 price in India confirmed for 64 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB models

Finally, the iPhone SE 2020 went official yesterday after months of leaks. It has landed in the U.S. with a starting price of $399. The iPhone SE 2020 comes in three storage editions such as 64 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB. India is one of the first markets that will be receiving the iPhone SE. At the launch, Apple had confirmed the pricing of the base model of the iPhone SE 2020 for India. The pricing of the other two variants of the smartphone is now mentioned in its official listing on Apple India website.

The 64 GB iPhone SE 2020 is priced at Rs. 42,500. The 128 GB and 256 GB storage editions of the smartphone are priced at Rs. 47,800 and Rs. 58,300 in India. The pricing of the iPhone SE 2020 is higher than the U.S. prices. The recent hike in the GST rate and depreciating value of INR against USD could be the reasons behind it. The Cupertino company is yet to confirm on the availability of the iPhone SE 2020 in India.

The iPhone SE features a Touch ID fingerprint scanner embedded in the capacitive home button. The handset supports 18W fast charging, but ships with a 5W charger. It also supports wireless charging.

Google is developing Custom Chips for Pixels and Chromebooks

Last week, a report from South Korea revealed Samsung to have partnered with Google to supply custom Exynos chips to the internet search giant. Now, a new report by Axios confirms this venture and also discloses more information.

According to the latest report, Google is developing new in-house chips to use in its Pixel lineup of smartphones and Chromebooks. It could debut on Pixels as early as next year if all goes well.

This new custom Google chip codenamed Whitechapel will be manufactured using Samsung’s 5nm process. Hence, the previous report seems to have mentioned it as a custom Exynos chip. It is not the first time Samsung is producing chips for a rival, it has previously manufactured Apple’s A-series mobile chips.

The report says the new chip will be an octa-core ARM processor with optimization for Google’s machine learning technology. It will also have components to improve the ‘always-on’ capabilities of the Google Assistant.

As per the previous report, the chip will feature two Cortex-A78 cores, two Cortex-A76 cores, and four Cortex-A55 cores for CPU. Whereas, for graphics, it will use the new unannounced Mali MP20 GPU based on Borr microarchitecture. Lastly, it will feature custom ISP and NPU designed by Google, which the new report confirms.

Google has already designed chips for its devices like the Titan M security chip and Pixel Visual Core. Making a whole SoC by itself to reduce dependency on chipmakers as Qualcomm could help the Mountain View company to compete against Apple, who has been making custom mobile processors for years.

Designing and manufacturing custom processors is a tough job and it takes years to master. If Google tries hard to hang on to this project for a long time, the Pixel smartphone lineup can finally make a stand for itself in the sea of Android smartphones with better software integration similar to what Apple does with iOS.

Another Live Image of Meizu 17 pops-up on the Internet

Meizu might finally announce its Meizu 17 flagship smartphone on April 17 according to a teaser posted by the company on Weibo a few days back. The device has been rumoured and leaked for a few weeks now. We even get to see a couple of live pictures of it and now once again another real-life image of Meizu 17 has emerged on the internet.

Unlike the previous two live images leak, this one does not clearly showcase the device. Because the Meizu 17 in this picture is placed in a translucent laboratory coat, whereas the first-ever real-life image of the device showed it in hand and the second picture was shot in a subway with a case on.

All the real-life pictures of Meizu 17 that have leaked so far confirms a new camera placement design. This same design can be also seen on a render leak from earlier this month. Thus, it is certain that the upcoming Meizu 17 will indeed have a horizontal camera array unlike vertical and matrix camera placement on other devices in the market.

In recent years, DxOMark ratings have become a reliable source for a smartphone camera and audio ratings. The brand originally focused on professional and digital cameras, but have broadened their expertise to include smartphones as well. Since then, it has become a staple for flagship launches and has high scores have also become a part of the advertisements. Now, Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra is the device that will be tested and the results will be posted next week. But can it topple the reigning Huawei P40 Pro off its throne?

Previously, we had reported on the Huawei P40 Pro receiving the highest ratings ever in the DxOMark tests. The device scored an impressive 128 points and is currently holds the top spot in the DxOMark leaderboard. Recently, even its subsidiary, Honor, managed to edge closer, coming in second with the Honor 30 Pro+. Thus, it seems that the Chinese group is dominating the charts. But the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra could beat the P40 Pro and the Honor flagship as well.

The Galaxy S20 Ultra from the South Korean tech giant, Samsung, has received many praises for its camera module. The device features a massive 108 megapixel primary sensor alongside a 48 megapixel telephoto lens, 12mp ultra wide shooter and even a ToF sensor as well. Social app Houseparty reports 50 million downloads in March amid coronavirus

Houseparty, the video chat social application has become quite popular and has seen massive growth amid the coronavirus lockdown across several countries. The app is one of the top choices when it comes to being connected with the loved ones as social distancing and government lockdown came into effect.

A report from app store analyst App Annie suggests that Houseparty has hit the record numbers in the month of March 2020. Now, the company has itself revealed that the app has seen over 50 million sign-ups last month, which is claimed to be 70 times above normal in some markets.

During the past 30 days, Houseparty has reportedly seen 17.2 million new installs across iOS and Android platforms. A different third-party estimate from Sensor Tower reports 28 million installs. The numbers don’t include the company’s app on Mac and Chrome.

Thanks to the surge in popularity and usage, Houseparty became the leading Social app in 82 countries, including the U.S. App Store. It was also the third leading Social app on the U.S. Google Play store. The app grew to become the No. 1 Overall app in 16 countries.

According to the company, the average time in conversation per user remained at more than 60 minutes and the average session times sometimes reached as high as more than 80 minutes. Since the app is designed for social hangouts, it has attracted younger users.

While Houseparty doesn’t reveal its metrics publicly, the company seems to be sharing the data about its popularity to distract people from the recent controversy. The app was recently accused of a data breach through social media posts from users claiming that user data was being used to access other accounts, like Netflix and Spotify.

The company denied the breach and even suggested that the social media posts were a part of a “paid commercial campaign” aimed at harming its business. Later, the company announced a $1 million reward for any evidence that proved it. So far, nothing yet has come of that and some of the accusations posted have also disappeared.

In other words, the OnePlus 8 series is one of the most expensive devices the company has launched. Nubia 65W GaN charger is now available in China for 139 yuan ($20)

Last month, along with the launch of Red Magic 5G gaming smartphone, Nubia also announced a bunch of accessories, including the a 65W GaN charger. Now, the product has been listed online and will be available for purchase from 17th April.

Although the Nubia 65W GaN charger carries a price tag of 169 yuan ( approximately $24), it seems that it will be available for purchase at a price of 139 yuan tomorrow, which roughly converts to $20.

This new GaN charge from Nubia has a foldable plug design and has two USB Type-C ports at the top of the charger along with a USB Type-A port. It has 65W Type-C single port output, 30W Type-C single port output and 24W USB-A single port output.

Reports indicate that it uses third-generation of leading-edge semiconductor materials. It is also said to have a smaller charger volume and better performance in thermal conductivity as well as high temperature resistance.

Qualcomm responds to MediaTek’s allegation over benchmark cheating controversy

Last week, chipset maker MediaTek found itself at the centre of a controversy related to the benchmark cheating. A report alleged that MediaTek purportedly allowed OEMs to enable a “sports mode” in benchmark apps.

The so-called “sports mode” on the devices is believed to ramp up things like the memory controller and scheduler in order to facilitate faster performance.

In its defence, the company said that this was a common industry practice and that its “key competitor” was also guilty of this practice. While MediaTek didn’t directly name its arch rival Qualcomm, the “key competitor” part clearly hints at Qualcomm.

The US-based Qualcomm has now issued a statement to Android Authority regarding this controversy. In the statement, the company denies whitelisting such benchmarking apps hack. It says: “Whitelisting refers to the technique of using the app name to determine whether to put the device into performance enhancement mode. The action of whitelisting a benchmark app is generally considered by the industry as cheating since it defeats the purpose of a benchmark, which is to reflect user experience for day to day use. Qualcomm does not whitelist.”

There’s a possibility that MediaTek could be referring to other chipset makers — Huawei and Samsung. However, both of them mostly make chipsets for their own smartphones and Samsung occasionally sells its chips to others. Thus, the only major direct competitor to MediaTek remains Qualcomm.

The controversy comes at a time when Taiwan-based MediaTek is making a comeback into the market with some great chipsets such as MediaTek Helio G-series and the new Dimensity 1000 flagship processor.

OPPO A92s appears in fresh renders ahead of launch

The OPPO A92s is an upcoming smartphone from OPPO. The Chinese firm is silent on the existence of the OPPO A92s smartphone that is expected to arrive with some impressive features 120Hz refresh rate display, dual front-facing cameras, quad rear cameras and large-sized battery. Recent reports have revealed plenty of information on its specs and appearance. The pricing of the device has also leaked. Hence, it appears that its launch may not be far away. Fresh set of renders of the OPPO A92s have surfaced today to showcase its design and color variants.

The OPPO A92s can be seen in black, white and pink color editions in the new renders. The new images of the phone give a good look at the design of the smartphone from all angles. The screen of the A92s is surrounded by slim bezels and it features a slightly thick chin. A pill-shaped cutout for the dual selfie cameras is available at the top-left corner of the display.

The volume up and down buttons are placed on the left side of the OPPO A92s. Its right spine has a fingerprint sensor embedded under the power button. The bottom edge of the device has a 3.5mm audio jack, a USB-C port and an external speaker. A square-shaped camera module resides at the top-left corner of the rear shell of OPPO A92s.

Past reports have revealed that the OPPO A92s is equipped with a 6.53-inch full HD+ and 120Hz refresh rate supporting IPS LCD panel. The display punch-hole is the home for its 16-megapixel + 2-megapixel dual selfie camera system. The A92s has a 48-megapixel (main) + 8-mgeapixel (ultrawide) + 2-megapixel (depth) + 2-megapixel (macro) quad camera setup.

Nubia Play features hexagonal camera and curved screen; up for pre-order in China

Recently, Nubia confirmed that the company will be launching a new smartphone in the Chinese market on 21st April, dubbed as Nubia Play. So far, the company has not shared anything related to the device apart from the fact that it will have 5G support.

Now, the company has officially started taking pre-orders for the Nubia Play smartphone in China through online marketplace JD.com. The images of the upcoming smartphone on the e-commerce platform hints at two major features.

The teaser images shows that the Nubia Play will feature a curved screen and on the back side, the device will have a hexagonal camera module placed in the top-center position. Based on the size of the camera module, it could come with dual camera sensors or triple camera sensors.

The company has also revealed the retail packaging box of the Nubia Play 5G smartphone which comes in blue color with graffiti-like illustration and the word “BE YOURSELF” in a bold on the edge of the front side cover.

Recently, a Nubia smartphone with model number NX651J was spotted on 3C certification website which could be the upcoming Nubia Play 5G smartphone. The listing shows that the phone could have 30W fast charging support and is compatible with Quick Charge, PD, PPS and other charging protocols.

This will also mark the first device getting launch after the company unveiled its new logo, which has ditched the red dot design and has adopted a typography-based modern and bright red-colored branding.

Interestingly, the company had also launched a smartphone series named Nubia M2 Play back in 2017. So, this could a part of that lineup and the company may have decided to ditch the ‘M2’ branding. Or it could be a totally new smartphone lineup from the company and based on the naming, there’s a possibility that it’s a budget gaming device.

Chinese version of the new Apple iPhone SE doesn’t have eSIM support

Apple recently launched its much-awaited budget iPhone in the form of a new iPhone SE. It features a design of iPhone 8 but has the powerful A13 Bionic chipset that is powering the iPhone 11 series devices.

The new Apple iPhone SE that will be sold in China has one major difference compared to the variant available in the United States or even Hong Kong. The difference is the lack of eSIM support in the Chinese version.

While the new iPhone SE comes with support for two SIMs nano SIM + eSIM, the Chinese version lists only nano SIM support on the company’s official website.

The Apple iPhone SE 2020 features a 4.7-inch Retina HD display and comes with support for Dolby Vision and HDR10 playback and also has Haptic Touch for Quick Actions that previews messages, rearranging apps, and more.

However, the highlight of the device is the same Apple A13 Bionic powering the phone, which is also inside the iPhone 11 series, and is touted to be the fastest mobile processor in the world. The phone comes in three models based on the storage capacity — 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB.

As for the camera department, the rear camera is a 12MP f/1.8 camera sensor which Apple says is the best single-camera system ever in an iPhone. With A13’s ISP and Neural Engine, the new iPhone SE can take portrait mode images with six different portrait lighting effects. The phone can also record 4K videos at 60fps.

On the front side, the device comes equipped with a 7MP snapper. While the company has not revealed the battery capacity, it has said that the phone comes with support for 18W fast charing as well as wireless charging. It adds that the 18W charger can charge the smartphone from empty to 50 percent in about half an hour.

Huawei P40 Series bags TIPA World Awards for Best Camera Smartphone

TIPA (Technical Image Press Association) has bestowed the Huawei P40 series with the ‘Best Photo Smartphone’ award. It is worth noting that TIPA World Awards are based on innovation and is not judged by the performance of the product.

The Technical Image Press Association (TIPA) is a body consisting of print and media publications associated with the photo/imaging field. It gives away awards annually to the most innovative products under different categories such as cameras, lenses, accessories, services, and tech & design.

Huawei P40 Series Best Camera Smartphone TIPA World Awards

The association recently published the winners of the 2020 edition of its Word Awards. In which, the Huawei P40 series as a whole has won the Best Photo Smartphone award. Surprisingly, the P series lineup has been winning this award since the TIPA World Awards was first introduced in 2017.

The first smartphone to win this award was Huawei P10 / P10 Plus in 2017, followed by P20 Pro and P30 Pro in 2018 and 2019 respectively. Since the award is honored based on innovation, we can understand why Huawei P series has been winning it for years.

For instance, this year’s one of the three winners, the Huawei P40 Pro Plus features the largest-ever smartphone camera sensor,  a 50MP RYYB sensor of 1/1.28-inch size with omnidirectional phase detection autofocus. This primary camera is further paired with a 40MP f/1.8 ultra-wide cine lens, an 8MP f/2.4 telescope camera with OIS and up to 10x optical zoom, another 8MP f.2.4 telescope camera with OIS but up to 3x optical zoom, and a TOF depth sensor.

iPhone SE 2020 launch results in discontinuation of iPhone 8

Apple has finally launched the highly anticipated iPhone SE 2020 smartphone. The handset has arrived with an enticing start price of $399. The first-generation iPhone SE from 2016 that came with a 4-inch display had carried the same price tag. The second-generation borrows comes with a larger 4.7-inch display and the latest Apple A13 Bionic chipset. It borrows its design from the iPhone 8 from 2017. The iPhone SE 2020 has been introduced as a successor to the iPhone 8. The Cupertino company has discontinued the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus after the introduction of the iPhone SE 2020.

A visit to the Apple.com reveals that the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are no longer listed. While the iPhone 8 is now discontinued, the iPhone 8 Plus will be available through select retailers in different regions. So, the iPhone lineup of the company includes four smartphones such as iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max and iPhone SE 2020.

The iPhone SE 2020 comes in 64 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB storage choices. They are priced at $399, $449 and $549. The smartphone can be bought in colors like black, white and red. On April 17, the first batch of 40 plus markets will carry out the pre-orders of the iPhone SE. Its shipments will begin on April 24. Some of the markets that are included in the first batch are the U.S., Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Italy, the UK, Russia, the UAW, Hong Kong, China and India.

After floating around the rumor mill for quite some time, the OnePlus 8 series comprising the OnePlus 8 and the OnePlus 8 Pro smartphones was launched in an online event hosted by the Chinese smartphone manufacturer on Apr. 14.
