Last year, Xiaomi India announced the Mi Business Casual Backpack. The backpack was only available in one color (black) at launch but Mi.com now lists two more colors, one of which is a personal favorite – Blue.

The second new color is Gray and just like the other two, it has a two-tone design. The new colors are slightly more expensive at INR 1,199 (~$16) compared to the black variant that is sold for INR 999 (~$13).

Huawei Mate X finally receives stable Android 10-based EMUI 10 update

The Huawei Mate X is the company’s first foldable smartphone announced back in February of 2019. But unfortunately, due to issues with its folding panel, its launch was delayed a couple of times and was only made available to purchase in November with Android 9.0 Pie on board. By then, Google had released Android 10 and even Huawei itself had updated some of its smartphones to EMUI 10 based on the latest version of Android, at least in China. Sadly, the update for Mate X was delayed until now, which is being rolled to users in a staged manner.

The Mate X’s primary competitor Galaxy Fold has a display folding inside, whereas it’s display folded outside. This design was likely challenging to implement on the Mate X since foldable screens are made of plastic and they can be easily damaged even with fingernails. Hence, the phone was launched in the market after 9 months from its announcement with the same old EMUI 9.1 based on Android 9.0 Pie. Notably, Android 10-based EMUI 10 was available in the market then.

Further, since the update for the Mate X was not a priority as it is a niche device for certain customers, the phone was stuck with beta versions of EMUI 10 since December. But now, thankfully, Huawei has started seeding out a stable Android 10 update to both beta and Android 9 users of the device.

The EMUI 10 stable update for Huawei Mate X comes with build number 10.0.1.115 and is targeted at users running the beta build version 10.0.1.110 and stable build version 9.1.1.153 respectively. As it is an OTA update, it will take time to hit every unit and therefore don’t panic if you haven’t received the update yet.

Xiaomi Mi 10 5G launching in India on March 31; no Pro version

The Mi 10 series is highly anticipated in India and now there is finally a launch date. However, it seems Xiaomi is bringing only the Mi 10 5G to India and not the Mi 10 Pro 5G.

According to a new page that just went up on Mi.com, the Mi 10 5G will be announced on March 31. This is four days after the global online launch. The page says the phone will be announced at 12:30 PM.

Xiaomi Mi 10 Indian Launch

The Mi 10 5G is Xiaomi’s 10th-anniversary flagship phone and the first Mi flagship to launch in India in a while. The phone packs a 108MP primary rear camera, support for 8K video recording, and also has support for wireless charging.

Other features include a 6.67-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a punch hole. A Snapdragon 865 processor, up to 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, a 20MP selfie camera, stereo speakers, and a 4780mAh battery capacity with support for 30W wired and 30W wireless fast charging.

The page says pre-order will begin on March 31 and run till April 7. We expect the first sale will be on April 8. AXIS Bank users can get up to INR 2500 off the retail price of the phone.

We have no idea what the price will be but it sure is going to be expensive based on a statement from the CEO of Xiaomi India. The top executive said yesterday that the increase in GST, weakened INR against USD, and the fact that the phone is a direct import will have them adopt a different pricing model (from what fans of the brand are used to).

ZTE Axon 11 5G reveals waterdrop notch display and square-shaped camera

ZTE has already confirmed that the company will be launching its next-generation Axon series smartphone named ZTE Axon 11 5G in China on 23rd March. Ahead of the launch, the company has revealed the phone’s back in a new poster where its brand ambassador Sean Sun is holding the upcoming device.

ZTE Axon 11 5G Poster

In the hand of the Chinese award-winning actor, we can see that the ZTE Axon 11 features a quad-camera setup where the sensors are placed on a square-shaped camera module in the top-left corner. Below the module is an LED flash as well as some camera-related text.

The same poster shows the smartphone in two color variants — Silver and Dark Grey/Black. However, to know for sure, we’ll have to wait for a couple of days more for the company to officially launch the device.

Recently, the ZTE Axon 11 passed through 3C certification which revealed that it will come with support for 18W fast charging. This hints that the phone won’t be a flagship offering from the company but the device is confirmed to have dual-mode SA and NSA 5G support.

The poster announcing the phone’s launch date teased it as a “5G Video Phone”, hinting that the company will be focusing on two aspects for the flagship smartphone — 5G connectivity and camera for video.

While the company has announced the launch date of the ZTE Axon 11 5G, it is yet to officially launch ZTE Axon 10S Pro 5G which has been leaked several times in the past. The Axon 10s Pro 5G is the company’s flagship smartphone that features 6.47-inch FHD+ display, SD865 SoC, triple rear cameras, 12GB LPDDR5 RAM, 256GB UFS 3.0 storage, and 4000mAh battery with Quick Charge 4+ support.

Apple granted patent for Magic Mouse with shape-changing body

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office officially published a series of newly granted patents for Apple and one of the most interesting patent in all of them is the Apple Mouse design with a shape changing body.

The patent covers systems and techniques for changing the shape of a mouse or other input device. This new patent for the shape shifting design could be helpful to provide users with different size hands the ability to altercate the mouse to their liking, by allowing width and height to be adjusted.

It shows that the mouse may include one or more actuators for manipulating the articulating member to change the curvature of the mouse’s exterior surface. It may be changed to optimise the ergonomics of the mouse or deliver tactile feedback to users.

Apple Shape Shifting Mouse Patent

The mouse may include various sensors to determine if the curvature matches a contour of the user’s hand, and the shape of the mouse may be changed accordingly. For example, a flat curvature may be chosen for tasks that are typically performed on a trackpad while curved surface may be chosen for tasks that are performed using a traditional mouse.

Further, the patent includes that the mouse may come with a display that could receive touch input as well as force input. The mouse could also include a biometric sensor, on/off and mute buttons and a camera.

It goes without saying that there’s no certainty that Apple will go ahead with the production and launching of this shape-shifting mouse as this is just a patent. However, it keeps the door open to have such device in the future.

Lu weibing explains why pop-up cameras will become rare in the 5G era

In order to offer high screen-to-body ratio on the smartphones, companies started adopting different types of design, including the pop-up front-facing camera module and punch-hole cutout on the screen for housing the camera sensor.

While the pop-up camera module for the front-facing snapper was quite popular, we’ve not seen much devices in the past few months adopting this design. The Redmi K30 Pro is among the few flagship phones to have such design.

Lu Weibing of Redmi Xiaomi
Lu Weibing, President of Xiaomi China and GM of Redmi brand

Now, Lu Weibing, General Manager of Redmi brand and President of Xiaomi Group China says that the pop-up front-facing camera system will become rare in the 5G era. He says that the number of components in 5G smartphones have increased significantly, making it more difficult to use a mechanical arrangement.

He also adds that the pop-up camera module also poses a huge challenge in terms of motherboard design. If the motherboard is divided into two parts, then it poses the risk of inadequate heat dissipation. He also talks about the need of higher capacity battery in the device for the 5G smartphones.

As said, the upcoming Redmi K30 Pro, which is set to launch in China on 24th March, will come with a pop-up front-facing camera. The phone is expected to come with a 6.67-inch Full HD+ display with the usual 60Hz refresh rate and in-display fingerprint scanner.

Recently, the company confirmed that the smartphone will come with a VC liquid cooled heat sink which will improve performance and enable Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 chipset to run at full capacity. It s also equipped with a 3,435 square millimetre of liquid cooled heat sink which is claimed to offer improved thermal performance and allow for greater heat dissipation over traditional cooling methods.

It has also been confirmed that the device will feature new UFS 3.1 storage standard which is the latest and fastest memory chip currently available commercially in the market and will provide read speeds up to 750MB/s.

Xiaomi reopens its 1800+ stores across China; strict measures for disinfection to be followed

Xiaomi, one of the leading consumer electronics company in China, has today announced that the company will be reopening its more than 1,800 Xiaomi Stores across the country after they were shut down because of the coronavirus.

The company has also added that it will be adopting strict measures for in-store disinfection, temperature measurement and along with some other steps. Xiaomi is also appealing customers for the safety and is asking for their cooperation.

Xiaomi wasn’t the only company that decided to shut down a part of its business. Last month, major tech companies announced that they would temporarily shut down all corporate offices, manufacturing factories, and retail stores across China. These companies include Apple, Samsung, Microsoft, Tesla, and Google.

Meanwhile, Xiaomi recently launched the Redmi Note 9 Pro and Redmi Note 9 Pro Max smartphones in the Indian market and is now reportedly all set to launch its flagship devices — Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro in the Indian market. Further, the company will be debuting the Mi 10 lineup globally on 27th March.

Alleged Vivo S6 5G appears in live shot with dual punch-hole display

Vivo is expected to announce the Vivo S6 5G smartphone by the end of this month or early April. It will be the company’s first S-series phone with 5G capabilities. The Chinese manufacturer recently shared a render which revealed the design of the bottom half of Vivo S6 5G’s rear shell. A reliable tipster from China shared a live shot of what appears to be the upcoming Vivo S6 5G phone.

Vivo S6 5G live shot

The tipster did not reveal the name of the device. Since it is running on FunTouch OS UI, it appears to be an upcoming Vivo phone with dual punch-hole display. Hence, it is likely that the Vivo S6 5G may arrive with a pill-shaped cutout at the top-right corner.

The S-series phones from Vivo feature selfie-centric smartphones. The predecessor Vivo S5 that debuted in September last year came with a 32-megapixel front-facing camera. Hence, there is a possibility that the Vivo S6 5G could be arriving with a dual front-facing camera. Probably, it will retain the 32-megapixel lens as the primary shooter. It could be accompanied by an ultrawide lens.

There is no word on the specifications of the Vivo S6 5G. There are rumors that it could be powered by the Exynos 980 chipset which was made available first on the Vivo X30 and X30 Pro phones that debuted in December 2019. The Exynos 980 brings support for dual-mode 5G connectivity.

Vivo S6 5G rear teser

Above shown is a recently released poster of the Vivo S6 5G phone. It only reveals that the phone will come in blue-purple gradient color. The bottom edge of the device can be seen sporting a speaker grille, a USB-C port, a microphone and a SIM card slot. The handset may not feature a 3.5mm audio jack or it could be placed on the top edge. The phone seems to be equipped with an ultrathin and a lightweight body.

Recently, a Vivo phone with a model number of V1962BA was recently spotted at the 3C certification platform. The listing revealed that it supports 5G connectivity and it may ship with an 18W fast charger. It is speculated that the V1962BA model number may belong to the forthcoming Vivo S6 5G phone.

Redmi K30 Pro 5G’s notch-less display won’t support high refresh rate

Redmi will be announcing the Redmi K30 Pro 5G smartphone on the coming Tuesday. It will be arriving as the successor for the Redmi K20 Pro that was received well by critics and general users. The Redmi K30 phone that went official in December sported a dual punch-hole display. Hence, it was speculated that the Redmi K30 Pro may sport the same design. However, recent reports have revealed that the Redmi K30 Pro will be equipped with a notch-less display and a pop-up selfie snapper like the predecessor phone. The company has released fresh posters to reveal the appearance of its display. Xiaomi Redmi Product Director Wang Teng Thomas revealed that the Redmi K30 Pro supports the conventional 60Hz refresh rate.

in the new posters, the Redmi K30 Pro’s notch-less screen can be seen surrounded by thin-bezels. Like the predecessor model, the Redmi K30 Pro seems to be equipped with LED lights on the edges of the pop-up camera module. Thomas said that the Redmi K30 Pro has a Samsung AMOLED display. Even though the display does not offer high refresh rates, it is remarkable when it comes to color reproduction, brightness, color accuracy and more.

Design

Do you prefer having a better overall look or the most premium materials? If the first option is your favorite one, then go for the Realme 6. With its punch-hole display and its reflective glass back, it looks very gorgeous to be just a midrange phone. But if you prefer having better materials, choose the Redmi Note 8T since it is the only with a glass back. I am not a fan of the design of the Samsung Galaxy M21 due to its huge camera module and its more anonymous plastic body. Note that only the Realme 6 offers protection against water, it is splash resistant.

Display

The real battle is between the Samsung Galaxy M21 and Realme 6. The former should offer a more interesting color reproduction thanks to its AMOLED display boasting more vivid colors and deeper blacks. On the other hand, the latter offers a smoother user experience with a high 90 Hz refresh rate and a 120 Hz touch-sampling rate. That is why Realme 6 is a better choice for gamers. Do you prefer a display with explosive colors or a smooth one?

Redmi Note 8T has an IPS display with a Full HD+ resolution just like the ones you can find on most of the affordable mid-range phones. None of these devices features an in-display fingerprint scanner: the Realme 6 has a side-mounted one, while the others have a rear-mounted biometric sensor.

Specs & Software

Realme 6 is much better than Samsung Galaxy M21 and Redmi Note 8T if we talk about hardware. It has a stronger Helio G90T chipset which boasts very high CPU and GPU performance. It is not a flagship-class processor, but it is an upper-midrange SoC on a phone sold at a very affordable price. On the other hand, Samsung Galaxy M21 comes with the most efficient chipset which, paired with a huge battery, will guarantee a low energy consumption and a very long battery life. Redmi Note 8T runs Android 9 Pie out of the box, while Samsung Galaxy M21 and Realme 6 are based on Android 10.

Camera

On the paper, the best camera setup belongs to Realme 6. It is equipped with a quad camera including a 64 MP main sensor, an 8 MP ultrawide sensor, a dedicated macro camera, and a depth sensor. Samsung Galaxy M21 is supposed to be better at selfies with its 20 MP camera, but it also comes with a better 5 MP depth sensor. However, we have doubts about the photo quality of the primary sensor. On the paper, Redmi Note 8T is supposed to be more or less at the same level as the Samsung Galaxy M21 and it is inferior to the Realme 6.

Battery

The huge 6000 mAh battery of the Samsung Galaxy M21 not only makes it the winner of this comparison but also one of the best battery phones ever. Right after, there should be Realme 6 with its 4300 mAh battery.

Price

You can find the Redmi Note 8T in India for less than Rs. 11,000 / €135, Realme 6 is priced Rs. 13,990 / €172, and Samsung Galaxy M21 starts from Rs. 12,999 / €160. With its better chipset, cameras and a 90 Hz display, Realme 6 is definitely a more interesting handset and we pick it as the winner of this comparison. Redmi Note 8T is cheaper and offers a higher value for money, but it can not compete with its opponents when it comes to specifications (even though it is the only with NFC and a glass back). Samsung Galaxy M21 has an AMOLED display and a way bigger battery, so we think certain users may prefer it to the Realme 6.

DxOMark reviews are going to be delayed due to COVID-19 lockdown

Popular camera and audio review outfit DXOMark has taken to Twitter to announce new measures that would be adopted by the company in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic sweeping through Europe.

DXOMark is a France-based company and as of March 17, the number of COVID-19 cases in France has risen past 7,000 with the numbers doubling in the past few days. This has prompted the French government to order a total lockdown in order to curb the epidemic. The government urged people to leave their homes only for essential purposes. DXOMArk

In this light, DXOmark released a statement that most of its employees will be working from home in the coming days in line with the French government’s directive. The statement also hints that only a few tests will be carried out at its offices during this period. Due to this development, the firm says some reviews will be delayed. However, the lockdown in France is for only 15 days and hopefully, the spread would have been contained within that period to warrant workers to resume their normal duties. But for now, it is what it is, a lockdown.
