Apple patents a tech to manipulate content on screen for onlookers

Companies patent a number of technologies but not all of them come into fruition as a product. And that seems to be the case with a new patent by Apple, which feeds onlookers with false data when they try to peep at your phone, tablet or laptop screen.

Apple Patent Display Privacy

Apple, on March 12, filed a new patent at the US Patent and Trademark Office titled ‘Gaze-dependent Display Encryption’. This tech will work on the basis of tracking user’s gaze while using Apple products such as iPhone, iPad or MacBook. By doing so, the screen will display the original data only in the region where the user stares at. Whereas, the other surrounding region will be encrypted in the form of displaying false data to make the content on the screen illegible to the people in the surrounding. What’s more interesting is the encrypted phony data will look similar to that of original content so that the onlookers don’t find it suspicious.

The Cupertino-based tech giant has always been a forerunner of privacy on its products. This is not the first time we are seeing someone trying a solution to this issue. A few years back, Blackberry-branded Android smartphones had a feature called ‘Privacy Shade’, which would hide the content on the screen completely except for a small movable window to let the user access the content. But, that was software-based and easy to implement. On the other hand, Apple’s patent requires a combination of hardware as well as software and therefore it is also hard to implement as there is literally no place on the front of the gadgets to include additional sensors.

Maybe, we might see this patent in action in some other way in near future or perhaps never at all.

Mi 10 went on sale again today amidst supply shortage

Xiaomi announced the Mi 10 series last month but unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the availability of this handset has been affected severely. So far, the Mi 10 duo (selected variants) went on sale a couple of times post the launch event on February 13. But that might change soon as the Chinese smartphone maker sold all the storage variants of the Mi 10 in a sale today.

Xiaomi Mi Note 10 Pro Global Version

The sale scheduled for today was the third sale for Mi 10. The last sale on February 14 was only limited to the 8GB + 256GB variant. But this time around, all the storage configurations of the device were made available, however, with some caveats. Only the 8GB + 128GB and 12GB + 256GB variants priced at 3999 Yuan (~$571) and 4699 Yuan (~$671) respectively were available for purchase, whereas the 8GB + 256GB version retailing for 4299 Yuan (~$614) could only be pre-ordered. Also, the shipping is expected to commence before March 26, which is about two weeks from today.

Going by the situation, we can clearly picture how coronavirus is affecting businesses in China (worldwide too). Xiaomi’s Lei Jun took to Weibo to announce that Mi 10 Pro and the standard Mi 10 will be only made available once a week on Tuesdays and Fridays respectively. He even added that supplies will still take some time to recover suggesting the situation in China to be not yet stable. Hopefully, the condition will turn around soon as the rise of new COVID-19 cases has been falling in China and thus most businesses have already begun lately.

With all that being said, Xiaomi is yet to launch the Mi 10 series globally, which is set for March 27.

Motorola Razr 2019 will launch March 16 on India’s Flipkart

The Motorola Razr 2019 is no new name in the industry as the foldable device was launched by Motorola as a rebirth of the classic Motorola Razr that held sway several years back. While the device made its debut in November 2019, Motorola hinted that the phone will be launched in India on March 16 at 12.30 pm. More details have now emerged that the Razr 2019 will be launched on Flipkart on that day.

Motorola Razr 2019

The new Razr 2019 still retained the flip design but lack a physical keyboard. Instead, what we got is a foldable screen in the most simplistic of form. No surprise the Motorola Razr 2019 has been a popular model since it was launched. The design may have even inspired the Samsung Z flip that was launched last month. You may check out our comparison article of the two models from here.

As per the specifications, the Motorola Razr 2019 features an internal P-OLED foldable display with a resolution of 876 x 2142 pixels. The display also uses an aspect ratio of 21:9. The outer screen houses a G-OLED screen of 2.7 inches with a resolution of 600 x 800 pixels.Motorola Razr 2019

The Razr 2019 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 mobile platform paired with 6 GB of RAM and 128GB of native storage. For photography, you get a 5MP selfie camera at the front while at the rear, there is a 16MP with f/1.7 aperture along with dual-LED flash. The phone packs a 2,510mAh battery and supports 15W TurboPower fast charging through USB-C.

Motorola is yet to reveal the price of the Razr 2019 in India but in the international markets, the Razr is selling for $1,499.

Xiaomi’s Qin AI Assistant Pro phone now comes in a 64GB variant with an updated processor

Last year in November, Xiaomi backed QIN brand announced its AI Assistant Pro, an iPod touch akin product running an Android skin. Now, within four months, the brand has come out with an upgraded version of the device with more storage and a better processor. It is priced at 799 yuan ($114) and is already up for sale on Xiaomi’s Youpin crowdfunding platform just like its predecessors.

Qin AI Assistant Pro64GB 02

The new QIN AI Assistant Pro is similar to the old version in many ways except for the Unisoc SC9863A processor, 64GB internal storage, and 12 free applications opposed to Unisoc SC9832E SoC, 32GB ROM, and 6 free apps on the previous model. Other than these three changes, the new Assistant Pro is basically the old one in terms of design, build, and software.

That means it sports the same 5.05-inches display with 576 x 1440p pixels and 22:5:9 aspect ratio. It weighs only 105g and is made of polycarbonate with a maximum thickness of 8.6mm. The back of the device features a 5MP camera accompanied by an LED flash, whereas the right side accommodates the volume rockers, power key, and an accented dedicated XiaoAI (Xiaomi AI) assistant button. It does not have a 3.5mm headphone jack but does feature a USB Type-C port to charge its 2,100 mAh battery.

As far as software is concerned, it runs a modified version of Android 9.0 Pie Go Edition with added AI functionalities and IR blaster to control appliances with remote control and Mijia smart home products. It also supports real-time translation of 62 languages including 36 with voice support and 10 with pictures. Last but not least, it also supports the full version of the WeChat app, which enables voice calling feature on the device.

Samsung Galaxy A21 with Helio P35 chipset appears on GeekBench

Around the middle of last year, Samsung filed trademark applications for some of its 2020 Galaxy A series models. One of the names that were trademarked is the Galaxy A21. The model has now reportedly appeared on GeekBench database.

Samsung Galaxy A21

The device is listed as Samsung SM-A215U and is listed to pack an ARM MT6765V/AC processor which is likely the MediaTek Helio P35 Systems-on-Chip (SoC). The device is also listed with 3GB of RAM which is likely the base RAM version. In addition, the device will boot Android 10 operating system out of the box. Samsung Galaxy A21 leaked render

In terms of performance, the Galaxy A21 had a single-core test score of 782 points and on the multi-core test, it scored 3996 points.

The Galaxy A21 is the successor of the Galaxy A20 that was launched last year. The phone is a budget phone but renders leaked earlier this year points to an impressive design. The device is shown to have a hole-punch full-screen design. At the rear, the renders reveal a quad-camera setup-up adopting a vertical alignment. The rear panel which will likely have a polycarbonate build is also shown to have a fingerprint reader slapped on the middle.

Samsung may take the wraps off the device any moment from now.

5G is confirmed to be Safe, Report from an International Radiation advisory

Since its first incidents of adoption, 5G networking has faced numerous accusations regarding its health safety parameters. Many had claimed that the radiation from the newer and faster bandwidth can potentially harm human beings and even some animals, but that has now been debunked by an International authority on the matter.

According to a report from the Internation Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), the 5G network’s millimeter-wave is safe. The German based scientific group assessed the potential health risks of the radio frequency broadcast and issued the statement. This also marks the first time in 20 years, that the advisory has updated its guidelines.

Notably, the organization is also in charge of setting limits on the exposure to radiation and has optimized its policies for 5G as well, setting a new maximum. However, it has been found that the 5G infrastructure in place in certain parts of the US and Europe have output levels far below the newly set maximum limit. In other words, there is no risk at all with the 5G network currently being implemented.

According to an official from the ICNIRP, the aim of the new guidelines was also to spread awareness and help put unfound beliefs to rest. Meaning, the concerned individual or group can breathe a sigh of relief. Interestingly, during the testing, it was found that the radio frequencies 5G uses in the UK are similar to those that were used in mobile telephones back in 1998.

5G

Multiple testings from the source also confirmed that the radiation levels barely reached 1 percent of the maximum limit. Even when run at the maximum possible power, it still will not cross the 50 percent barrier, although this level will never be reached in day to day usage.

Xiaomi invests in Hypower Electronics, a Fast Charging chip maker

Earlier today (13th March 2020), data reports showcased that the Xiaomi Changjiang Industrial Investment Fund had invested in a Chinese fast charging chipmaker called Hypower Microelectronics. The investment fund was initially jointly created by Xiaomi back in 2017 and has strategically invested in multiple different fronts since.

Hypower Microelectronics Co Ltd was established back in March 2018, with its business operations primarily revolving around circuitry and wholesale of integrated circuit chips. The company is represented by Wang Qiang who also owns 36.71 percent of the stakes in the Hypower. And now, Xiaomi has also invested in the company and secured a 9.92 percent stake as well.

According to public data reports, Hypower is currently developing integrated circuits, with a special focus on reducing the overall power supply while also boosting the efficiency of the same. In recent times, Xiaomi has invested heavily in the field of microelectronics and chipsets, which is evident with its latest investment.

Xiaomi

However, it doesn’t end there, as the Xiaomi Changjiang Industrial Investment Fund had just invested in a semiconductor company called, Senscomm last month as well. The firm used the funding to develop and mass produce various new Wi-Fi 6 standard AIoT products. This investment is also in line with the Chinese government’s (Note: the local government also had a stake in the investment fund) initiative to encourage local businesses to develop proprietary core technologies and products such as chips.

Mysterious Realme RMX2021 appears with Helio P23 on Geekbench

Realme has recently launch the Realme 6 and Realme 6 Pro smartphones in India. Later this week, it will be unveiling the Realme 6i smartphone. A mysterious Realme RMX2021 smartphone has been spotted on Geekbench. The Geekbench 5 listing reveals that the handset is fueled by the outdated Helio P23 chipset.

The RMX2021 Geekbench 5 appearance shows that is fueled by MediaTek MT6763V/CE. It is mentioned with a base frequency of 1.7GHz. The SoC has been identified as the outdated 16nm Helio P23 chipset that went official August 2017. The chipset is coupled with 3 GB of RAM on the device. The RMX2021 is loaded with Android 10 OS. The final product may ship with the latest Realme UI. In the single and multi-core Geekbench 5 benchmarks, the RMX2021 scored 328 and 1167, respectively.

While the inclusion of the Helio P23 on an upcoming Realme phone seems doubtful, HTC recently launched the Wildfire R70 smartphone. Hence, there could be a possibility that the RMX2021 with Helio P23 may go official in the near future. The RMX2021 has been previously spotted at the database of Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC). Hopefully, more details on the phone will appear in the coming days.

In related news, Realme is gearing up to unveil the Realme 6i smartphone. The smartphone will be made official on March 17. The company has already confirmed that it will be arriving with a 48-megapixel quad camera setup and it will be equipped with support for 18W fast charging through USB-C. Also, it will be the first smartphone ever to feature the latest Helio G80 gaming-centric processor. Myanmar will be the first market to receive it. OnePlus 8 Pro spotted with Robert Downey Jr.

In recent years, the relatively young smartphone brand, OnePlus, has grown immensely in size and popularity. So much so, that the company’s brand ambassador is one of the world’s most recognizable Hollywood actor, Robert Downey Jr. Now, the famous personality was apparently seen endorsing the brand again, this time with a OnePlus 8 Pro in his hands.

OnePlus
Popular actor Robert Downey Jr. with the OnePlus 8 Pro in his hand

An image has been circulating online which depicts Robert Downey Jr. with the OnePlus 8 Pro in his hands. The original image was reportedly seen on Instagram, uploaded by director Sam Jones but that has since been deleted. However, certain other Instagram users and fan page websites reuploaded the image so you can take a look yourself.

From the image, it can be observed that the OnePlus 8 Pro looks quite similar to the OnePlus 7T Pro from the rear. The rear camera module is designed in a similar fashion and has been placed vertically stacked as well. Unfortunately, finer details have not been divulged in the images. Furthermore, the image can also be doctored in all likelihood, so you can take this report with a grain of salt as well.

However, considering the nearing launch date, which is a bit earlier than previous generations, and the fact that Robert Downey Jr. is the brand ambassador for the company. It isn’t that far fetched to assume that this image was taken during an ad campaign or even a movie. The director could’ve deleted the image after realizing his mistake. But that again is speculation. So we’ll keep you posted regarding any new updates for the same.

Realme 6i March 17 launch date and 18W fast charging support confirmed

Recently, the upcoming Realme 6i smartphone that bears a model number of RMX2040 was spotted on Geekbench. The listing had suggested that it will be fueled by Helio G70 chipset. However, it is now known that the Realme 6i will go official as the first Helio G80 powered chipset phone. The Chinese firm has now officially confirmed through its Myanmar Facebook page that the Realme 6i will be announced on March 17 at 3:20PM (local time).

The new Helio G80 chipset that powers the Realme 6i was announced last month. Another poster released by the company reveals that the Realme 6i will be equipped with an 18W fast charger. The poster reveals that the bottom edge of the device has a 3.5mm audio jack, a USB-C port and an external speaker. The company also revealed that it has a 48-megapixel quad camera setup.

Myanmar won’t be the only country that will be receiving the Realme 6i smartphone. Recent reports have revealed that the Realme 6i has been approved by many certification agencies like FCC (U.S), EEC (Russia), BIS (India), NBTC (Thailand), IMDA (Singapore) and SIRIM (Malaysia). Among the aforementioned regulatory bodies, only the FCC appearance of the phone managed to reveal some of its important details.

The FCC listing of the Realme 6i carried some of its live shots. It revealed that the smartphone has a waterdrop notch display, a quad camera setup and a fingerprint scanner on the back. The device will come with a 5,000mAh battery. The handset has 164.5 x 75.5 x 9mm dimensions and it weighs 195 grams.

The Helio G80 chipset is an inferior SoC than the Helio G90T that powers the Realme 6. Hence, it appears that the Realme 6i will be positioned lower than the Realme 6i which went official in India with a starting price of Rs. 12,999 (~$175). Probably, the handset could be arriving in India with a starting price of Rs. 9,999 (~$135).

Redmi K30 Pro is well Stocked for the Launch: Lu Weibing

Earlier today (13th March 2020), Lu Weibing, Vice President of Xiaomi Group and Redmi General Manager, went on Weibo to state that potential customer’s need not worry regarding the stock of the Redmi K30 Pro during its launch.

The senior executive shared a post on the Chinese microblogging website to keep confidence in the launch event due to the on going events in China. For those unaware, China was recently hit with the Coronavirus outbreak which is now being referred to as a global pandemic. The infection had originated from Wuhan prompting the government to quarantine the city and shut down areas of high population density like offices and factories.

Redmi
Redmi K30 Pro Launch event

This caused numerous electronics brands like Apple, Xiaomi, and more to face troubles keeping up with demand, since the supply was cut short. Even the tertiary companies where materials were sourced from were facing troubles. This led to even more issues during the resumption of production. But now, it seems like Redmi is staying strong with a healthy pre supply of the Redmi K30 Pro units in China.

The Redmi K30 Pro will be the latest flagship entry from the company and arrive with top notch specs like Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 SoC, LPDDR5 memory and UFS 3.0 flash storage. Furthermore, the launch event of the Redmi K30 Pro had also been teased to feature more than just a smartphone launch, according to Lu Weibing. So this gives us more than just a smartphone to look out for.

Redmi

The company may even seek to grow its IoT or AIoT portfolio in the event with wearables of new Wi-Fi 6 routers. But we will have to wait for the official announcement during the launch event. So stay tuned for more coverage on the upcoming Redmi K30 Pro conference.

Samsung working on a new type of display for future smartphone

Samsung is the largest smartphone brand in the world. Its offerings have been extremely popular in recent times and are also well known for their displays. The company has just released its latest flagship Galaxy S20 series, but now reports suggest that the company is working on a new form of display for its future releases.

Samsung had first revealed its AMOLED display back in 2008, since then, the company’s technology has grown exponentially in popularity among other OEMs as well. This technology even brought out other types of screens like Super AMOLED and Dynamic AMOLED. The latter can be found in the Galaxy S10 and even the latest Galaxy S20 series of flagships.

Samsung Galaxy S20
Samsung Galaxy S20

Thus, it is not a new endeavor Samsung is reportedly undertaking as innovation is one of the characteristics of a successful smartphone brand. So, we can expect an entirely new technology being developed by the South Korean tech giant or another new and improved spin off in the AMOLED display department.

Earlier this month, Samsung filed a trademark application with the US Patent And Trademark Office under something called “Samsung PIFF.” This trademark has also made an appearance on the World Intellectual Property Organization’s database and is categorized under Class 9. Under this, the only thing described in the patent is the simple term, “Display for smartphones.”

Samsung Galaxy Note8 Star Pink
Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Featuring A Super AMOLED Display

A notable aspect of the filing was that it was done from Samsung Electronics and not Samsung Display. Hence, it is almost certainly a new breed of display that may soon be seen in future smartphones or the upcoming flagship Galaxy Note 20 series. Unfortunately, this is just speculation and additional information is currently unavailable. So stay tuned for any new developments regarding this.

Google Play Store gets Dark Mode user interface on Android smartphones

It’s been over a year since Google started rolling out Dark Mode support across its various services and products. Most of the Google services now support dark mode. Must See: Guide to enable Gmail Dark Mode on old Android versions

The interested users can enable the dark mode by heading over to the Google Play App > Settings > General > Change “Theme” to Light. However, there’s also an option to enable dark mode when the user switches “Battery saver mode” on the smartphone. Google Play Dark Mode setting works along with a global mode switch present in Android 10. The global setting will overlap the in-app settings of the Play Store on an Android smartphone.

The new feature is made available via a server-side switch. It will help to lower the eye fatigue if using the app for longer times. Moreover, the dark mode conserves energy on AMOLED display devices.

The search giant has rolled out the dark mode support for majority of its services including Gmail, Google Drive, Docs, Discover Feed, Google Chrome, Calendar, Photos, News, Discover, Keep and others. Other major giants like WhatsApp and Instagram has also rolled out the support for the dark theme. Meanwhile, Facebook is still testing it and we expect it to roll out by the end of this year.
