Realme 5s will come with a Snapdragon 665 processor

The Realme 5s is coming, and over the past few days, bits of information about the phone has been released on the official Flipkart landing page. The latest info discloses the phone’s processor.

The new info on the page reveals that the Realme 5s will come with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 665 at its heart just like its sibling, the Realme 5. The processor is a power-efficient one and coupled with the massive 5000mAh battery capacity, it should last well more than a day. According to GSMArena, the Realme 5 has an endurance rating of 144 hours, the fourth-highest on their list of reviewed devices (as at the time it was reviewed).

Realme 5s Snapdragon 665

The Snapdragon 665 was announced in April of this year. It is an 11nm octa-core processor with eight Kryo 260 cores clocked at 2.0GHz. It also has an Adreno 610 AIE GPU, a Hexagon 686 DSP, and a Spectra 165 ISP. The SoC powers a lot of phones such as the Mi A3, OPPO A9 2020, OPPO A5 2020, and Redmi Note 8/8T.

The Realme 5s will pack a 6.51-inch HD display with a waterdrop notch. It will also have quad rear cameras that include a 48MP primary sensor. The provided image reveals it will be available in Crystal Red and have a fingerprint scanner on the back. So far, the 48MP camera seems to be the only difference between it and the Realme 5. We hope there is more, maybe even 18W fast charging.

Realme will announce the phone on November 20 alongside the Realme X2 Pro flagship phone.

Huawei’s Razr-style flip foldable patent design is Fresh & Minimalistic

Huawei’s Mate X foldable went on sale for the first time in China yesterday. And it was sold out in less than a minute. But looks like the company is already eyeing at different foldable designs, including ones like the Motorola Razr flip folding design. Today, Huawei’s new patent was published by WIPO revealing its interest in vertical folding smartphones.

Huawei flip phone patent 08

The patent, registered by HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO. LTD and published in the Hague Bulletin no. 46/2019 reveals a vertical folding design patent by Huawei with at least three cameras at the back. The phone will have a single display on the inside that folds with the help of a hinge. However, the folding position is not exactly at the center which leaves a small part of the display exposed even when it’s completely folded. This is actually a very interesting take on the flip foldable design as it eliminates the need for a secondary display on the outside.

Huawei flip phone patent 07

We can’t see any cameras on the flexible display side of the phone, but there are three sensors at the back placed in a vertical arrangement. There’s are some unidentified components below the flash in the camera setup. The design also reveals the buttons are located on the right side.

A couple of days back, we reported that Xiaomi had patented a Razr-style flip foldable smartphone. However, Huawei’s take on the vertical folding design looks a lot more minimalistic and refined than Xiaomi. Of course, at this point in time, these are just patents, and we are not even sure whether these two companies are actually working on a vertically folding flip phone.

So for now, Motorola Razr is your best bet at a flip folding design. However, we do hope other companies join the party very soon as Razr’s average internals leaves users wanting for more.

The Motorola Razr and Thinkpad X1 source folding displays from BOE

Lenovo officially launched the much-awaited Motorola Razr amidst much fanfare at an event in Los Angeles, US yesterday. The company launched the device this morning at the Tech World 2019 in China. At the event, the Chinese firm also showcased the world’s first foldable PC with folding displays. If it seems familiar, it’s because that’s the very same device that was revealed as ThinkPad X1 series device earlier this year.

What’s more interesting to note however is that the vice president of BOE Group, Wei Wei, revealed on Weibo that the folding displays for the Thinkpad X1 line and Motorola Razr were both made by them. In addition, the Huawei Mate X that was officially launched earlier today also comes with a display provided by BOE.

This is a rather interesting bit of news, as it shows that any smartphone company could technically put out a folding phone since BOE is now an established supplier of them. It would still require a sizable amount of R&D from the company’s side to accommodate a folding design, but the possibility is there.

The Motorola Razr is the third commercial foldable smartphone in the market from an established tech company. Samsung’s Galaxy Fold is already available for purchase across the globe, and the Huawei Mate X went on sale in China today. You can read the thoughts of our own Joel Joseph regarding the Motorola Razr over here.

Xiaomi 29-inch curved gaming monitor coming soon

Xiaomi is best known for its smartphones, though it does dabble in other hardware categories: smart TVs, fitness bands, battery packs, and even electric scooters. The Mi Surface 34 was the company’s first desktop monitor. It had a 34-inch display sporting a curved (1500R) panel with a 3440×1440 resolution (21:9 aspect ratio).

Built for gaming, it had a 144Hz refresh rate, 4ms response time, and AMD FreeSync support. Alongside that, we also saw the Xiaomi also unveiled a 23.8-inch IPS monitor with a 1920×1080 resolution. It came with a fairly similar feature set, and was priced at 699 Yuan (~$98). Now, leakers are reporting a third model on the way soon.

According to the report, the brand new display will essentially have the same features as the larger unit. It’ll retain the 144Hz refresh rate and 4ms response time, only on a smaller 29-inch curved panel. On top of this, it’ll obviously be priced slightly lower than the current 34-inch model, giving it a nice niche.

There are no shortage of options if you are in the hunt for the a new gaming monitor, from newcomers like Razer and Xiaomi to old veterans like Viewsonic. We’re eager to see how the new Xiaomi gaming monitor turns out, though we expect it to be just as good as their previous efforts which were already stellar products.

Vivo S5 vs Realme X2 vs Xiaomi Mi CC9: Specs Comparison

Yesterday Vivo announced the new S5: someone considers it the nth mid-ranger from the company, but it is not exactly so. It offers a more original design than most of the actual budget phones, so it is worth paying attention to it. Now that we know all of its specifications and the launch price, the next step is comparing Vivo S5 with at least some of the most important mid-rangers out there in order to establish whether it is worth for potential buyers giving it a chance. For this comparison, we chose the Realme X2 due to its amazing quality-price ratio and the Xiaomi Mi CC9 due to its premium design and well-balanced specs sheet.

Design

As said above, Vivo S5 adopts an original and futuristic design. First of all, it comes with a punch-hole display, and that is not so easy to find it among mid-rangers. Further, it has a pretty nice diamond-like camera module on the back making its design unique. It has a bigger display and a higher screen-to-body ratio than Realme X2, yet it provides a more compact body. Even the Xiaomi Mi CC9 is a very interesting phone when it comes to aesthetics. Just like the Vivo S5, it has a glass back as well as an aluminum frame, despite it lacks a punch-hole display. Realme X2 has a plastic frame, so its build quality is inferior.

Display

Most of the punch-hole displays are IPS panels, but the Vivo S5 features a Super AMOLED screen. However, this is not the best display of the trio. The richest image quality is delivered by the Xiaomi Mi CC9 which supports the HDR standard and it even comes with high brightness. In each case, you get an in-display fingerprint reader, as well as an AMOLED panel. But only the Xiaomi Mi CC9 supports HDR.

Specs & Software

Vivo S5, Xiaomi Mi CC9, and Realme X2 are all powered by different chipsets, but all of them belong to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 700 series. The most powerful chipset is the Snapdragon 730G found on the Realme X2 which is the best for both its CPU and GPU performance. The second place goes to the Snapdragon 712 found on the Vivo S5 but it is just a slight upgrade of the Snapdragon 710 you can find on the Xiaomi Mi CC9. You should also consider that, besides having the best processor, Realme X2 features a fast UFS 2.1 storage. Each phone has Android 9 Pie out of the box, but customized by a different user interface: Vivo S5 has Funtouch OS, Xiaomi Mi CC9 has MIUI (which I define more advanced) and Realme X2 has Color OS.

Camera

At first glance, it does not seem so, but the Realme X2 has the most advanced camera department. It features a 64 MP quad camera including an ultrawide sensor, a dedicated macro camera, and a depth sensor. Even its front camera is amazing with its 32 MP resolution, but the 32 MP camera of the Xiaomi Mi CC9 uses Meitu’s algorithm which is able to enhance the selfie quality a lot. Note that no one of these devices is a high-end camera phone, they just come with midrange-class sensors.

Battery

On the paper, Vivo S5 offers a slightly bigger 4100 mAh battery, while Xiaomi Mi CC9 and Realme X2 stop at 4030 and 4000 mAh, respectively. However, this does not necessarily mean that Vivo S5 will last more on a single charge as software optimization plays an important role when it comes to small battery capacity differences.

Price

Vivo S5 6/128 GB just launched in China with a €350/$387 starting price, Xiaomi Mi CC9 costs about €360/$398 in the 6/128 GB version, and Realme X2 costs €230/$254 in the 6/128 GB configuration. Overall, in my personal opinion, Realme X2 looks like a more interesting option due to its stronger chipset and better cameras.

Redmi 8 and 8A Kernel source code released by Xiaomi

Xiaomi’s big battery budget devices for 2019, namely the Redmi 8 and Redmi 8A has officially received the green signal from Xiaomi for third-party development. The company has just released the kernel source code for both the devices, allowing developers to tinker with its code and develop custom ROMs for the device.

Redmi 8 unboxing featured

Xiaomi’s smartphones are popular for their extensive custom ROM development. Even the MediaTek powered Redmi Note 8 Pro kernel source code was released back in September. So, we can expect to see some new custom ROMs for the Redmi 8 and 8A in the coming months.

Both devices have a large 5000mAh battery that easily offers two-day battery life. They share the same octa-core Snapdragon 439 processor inside with the Redmi 8 getting a 4GB RAM version while the 8A maxing out at 3GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage. Another major difference is in its camera setup as the higher-end Redmi 8 gets a dual 12MP + 2MP shooter at the back while the 8A has to settle for a single 12MP sensor. Note that the cheaper 8A doesn’t have a fingerprint sensor.

Xiaomi recently revealed that the Redmi 8 and 8A have a special sonic dust removal feature built-in. It’s essentially just a way to clear out the dust and gunk that tends to gather up in smartphone speakers, which is a fairly common problem.

According to Xiaomi, the Redmi devices achieve this by playing a custom sound designed to achieve the maximum amplitude of the speaker for 30 seconds. This allegedly gets all the dust out by pure force, without damaging the speaker we’d hope. It’s an interesting solution to a common problem.

MIUI 11 update now rolling out for the Redmi 4

I use a Redmi Note 6 Pro and still check daily if Xiaomi has pushed the new MIUI 11 update to the model. Surprisingly, users of the Redmi 4 in India have reportedly started receiving MIUI 11 update and have even shared evidence online. Apart from the fact that it is MIUI 11, there is nothing spectacular to cheer about this update.

The screenshot shared by a Redmi 4 user shows that the new update comes with the version number MIUI 11.0.2.0.NAMMIXM. It also shows the update file is 483MB large. Interestingly, this new update doesn’t bring a change in the Android version as the Redmi 4 still runs the outdated Android 7.1.2 (Nougat). It also brings along the October 2018 Android security patch that Google released more than a year ago.

The changelog shared by some users on the MIUI forum shows the MIUI 11 brings improved touch controls and refined colour usage to deliver a fresh experience. The update also carries sound effects influenced by nature. The update is also expected to enhance the user experience by offering a minimalistic design. Other features include an always-on lock screen and Dynamic Video Wallpapers.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro gets MIUI 11 Stable Update in India

After pushing stable MIUI 11 update for Redmi Note 8 Pro in China last week, Xiaomi has started rolling out the same update to the Indian version of the devices. Multiple users on the Xiaomi forums have reported that they have received the MIUI 11.0.1.0 stable update on the Redmi Note 8 Pro models. This release is in fact ahead of the scheduled late December MIUI 11 rollout for the model in India.

Redmi note 8 pro featured 05

Despite being rolled out as MIUI 11 stable update for the Redmi Note 8 Pro, it’s likely that this is a test stable build being sent out to a limited number of users. There were a number of users on the forums who didn’t get the update, so it’s possible that many users will have to wait for a week or two to get the final build.

Note that this MIUI 11 update is still based on Android 10. But it brings interesting MIUI 11 features to the device, including a redesigned UI and productivity features. You can read the entire list of MIUI 11 features from here.

The Redmi Note 8 Pro features the MediaTek Helio G90T gaming processor with 6GB / 8GB of RAM and 64GB / 128GB storage. The quad-camera setup at the back comes with an f/1.7 aperture 64-megapixel ISOCELL Bright GW1 as the primary lens, an ultrawide lens of 8-megapixel, a 2-megapixel macro lens with 2cm focal length and a depth sensor of 2-megapixel.

Xiaomi’s new 55 °C Warm up Cup is also a 10W wireless charger

Some may see Xiaomi as a company that copies product designs and create them at affordable pricing. Truth is, you can’t take away the fact that the company has some innovative products geared towards making life easy. The brand has now launched a warm cup equipped with wireless charging. The warm cup comes with a decent price tag of 189 yuan (around $26).Xiaomi warm cup

The Warm cup can maintain a constant temperature of 55°C and this is delivered through wireless charging. All you have to do is to place the cup on the charging pad. This method is said to be different from the traditional resistance wire heating method. Wireless heating is safer and more stable as it can maintain the temperature of the cup at 55 °C.

The Warm cup is no different from the traditional mug made of pure ceramic. It is safe and durable. The whole cup is waterproof and the user can clean it at will during use. The heating feature is designed in a way to ensure the safety of the users from burn. The cup also automatically enters sleep mode and stops heating after 4 hours of inactivity.

Apart from that, the wireless charging pad can also be used to charge smartphones that support wireless charging. It is compatible with Xiaomi, Huawei, Apple and Samsung phones. The charger has a power rating of 10W which should deliver wireless fast charging.

Huawei will likely get another 6-month extension from the U.S.: Report

It’s been six months since Huawei was banned by the U.S. government from buying or selling components and services from U.S. companies. However, until now, the full force of the ban has not come into effect, all thanks to the delay of the ban’s enforcement. The second temporary extension, enforced in August, will end on Tuesday, November 19. Now, a report from Politico states that the U.S commerce department is expected to grant another 6-month extension to Huawei.

Huawei Mate 30 Pro featured 02

The extension should allow Huawei to continue to support its existing set of smartphones and devices that use U.S. components. So, existing Huawei devices could be safe for another six months, if this extension is permitted. However, the U.S. government is yet to officially announce anything in this regard and is likely to do it just before the current extension ends.

Even if Huawei gets a reprieve for another 6-months, that still doesn’t change the fact that none of its new devices can use Google Play services. The Mate 30 series will continue to struggle internationally without GAPPs support and we aren’t seeing any solution in this regard.

Despite US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross stating that the U.S. government will start granting licenses to U.S companies to trade with Huawei a few weeks back, we are yet to hear about it. With the U.S. – China trade war still going on strong, it remains to be seen if Huawei will get any real reprieve anytime soon.
