Samsung is revamping its smartphone lineup in the Indian market to grab back the market share it lost to the Chinese players. For this, the company launched the new Galaxy A-series phones and also introduced online-only Galaxy M-series.
The company has already launched a few devices in the Galaxy M lineup and is reportedly all set to launch yet another smartphone in the same series which will be the successor to Samsung Galaxy M40.
As per the report, the company could be launching the Samsung Galaxy M50 in the Indian market later this month. While the exact launch date is not confirmed, the device is expected to go official in the country on 15th November.
Interestingly, Samsung seems to be ready to sell the upcoming smartphone through both channels — online as well as offline, that too at the same time and at same pricing. While the Galaxy M-series was launched as online exclusive, the company later launched in offline market, but with a slightly higher pricing.
There’s nothing known about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy M50 smartphone but given that it will be the successor to Galaxy M40, we expect the device to have better specifications than the M40.
Currently, the Samsung Galaxy M40 is the top-end device in the lineup. It features a 6.3-inch Full-HD+ Infinity-O Display and is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 octa-core processor, paired with Adreno 612 GPU, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of internal storage.
For taking selfies and video calling, the smartphone has a 16-megapixel sensor at the front. The phone features a triple rear camera setup that comprises a 32-megapixel primary sensor with an AI scene optimizer and f/1.7 lens, a 5-megapixel secondary depth sensor, and an 8-megapixel tertiary sensor with an ultra-wide-angle lens.
Connectivity options on the device include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS/ A-GPS, and a USB Type-C port. The handset is running Android 9 Pie-based Samsung One UI out-of-the-box and is powered by a 3,500mAh battery with support for fast charging.

Over the years, we have seen multiple crowdfunding projects come up with ways for us to be able to use our phones more productively. There is the $99 SuperBook that allowed you to connect your Android phone to what we can call a laptop shell and use it as a laptop. It raised $2.6 million during its crowdfunding in 2016.
In the same year, there was also a similar device called the NexDock but with a $149 price tag and included support for phones with Windows 10 Continuum. Way before the SuperBook and NexDock, Motorola launched the Lapdock 100 which worked with some of its Android phones. This year, another manufacturer is giving it a go again and their product is called the PhoneBook.
The PhoneBook is also a laptop shell with a 15.6-inch touchscreen Full HD display and a full-sized keyboard and trackpad. All you have to do is plug in “ANY” phone to it and you have a working laptop. Anyware, the makers of PhoneBook, say your phone is the CPU and every time you get a new phone, it is like you have a new computer. It also uses your phone’s storage to save the work you do on it.
With the PhoneBook, you are not only able to run the apps on your phone on a larger screen, but you can also run Windows Cloud PC apps. For entertainment, the PhoneBook has stereo speakers, so you can enjoy your movies with better audio than what your phone’s speaker pumps out. The PhoneBook is also touted as the first device that allows you to use the keyboard and mouse to play mobile games, a feature said to be unavailable on Samsung’s DeX.
The PhoneBook has an 8-hour battery life and charges your phone when connected to it. The PhoneBook as 2 x USB ports, an HDMI input port, a USB-C video input port, and a 3.5mm audio jack. It also has a reset button. It has a 12V/2A power adapter which is a bit disappointing as USB-C charging would have been better.
The PhoneBook will work with all Android phones except those powered by a MediaTek processor which means a large percentage of phones are excluded. It will also work with iPhones.
The device is available on Kickstarter for crowdfunding starting at $169 for backers. When it launches, it will sell for $249.
Research firm IDC has released its third-quarter smartphone market report for India. The report covers phone sales between July and September and it shows that a total of 46.6 million smartphone shipments were effected, which is higher than the 42.6 million units shipped during the same period last year.
The improvement in the market was felt by all the top five brands, except Samsung, with a YoY increase in their shipments. The top five spots consist of Xiaomi, Samsung, Vivo, Realme and Oppo.
Xiaomi continued its dominance of the Indian market with an estimated shipment of 12.6 million units, representing an 8.5% yearly growth. With a total shipping estimate of 8.8 million units, Samsung came in second but this is lower than the 9.6 million units shipped the year prior.
BBK subsidiaries Vivo, Realme and OPPO completed the top five. Vivo is reported to have shipped an estimated 7.1 million smartphone with a hugely impressive 58.7% yearly growth. If you think this is impressive as well, wait until you see Realme’s growth curve. The new OPPO spin-off shipped a huge 7.1 million units in Q3 2019, up from 1.3 million in the same period last year. This massive shipment represents a growth of 401.3%. IDC fingers the affordable Realme C2, Realme 3 and 5 series for the success. Oppo itself managed 5.5 million shipments and a solid 92.3% year on year growth. This indeed shows that BBK’s aim for creating a sub-brand out of OPPO is spot-on.
In terms of price category, the report shows that the INR 14,000 ($200) and under bracket accounted for 80% of all smartphone shipments in India for the period. This perhaps, explains why Realme is king. Affordable pricing. The INR 14,000 – 35,000 ($200-500) category got almost 19%, leaving just over a percent for the $500+ phones. Apple is king in the premium class with 51.3% share while the fastest-growing segment is the INR 21,000 – 35,000 ($300-500) range.

One of the smartest things to do when looking for affordable smartphones is considering devices with long battery life. Since battery life is one of the biggest problems on modern smartphones, the efficient components often present on affordable devices paired with a big battery can ensure a very long battery life so that you can even forget your charger at home for at least two days. In this article, we compared three of the most amazing battery phones available in the midrange segment, from three different brands. We are talking about the Oppo A9 2020, the Realme 5 by Oppo’s sub-brand and the Samsung Galaxy M30s. All of them come with huge batteries, especially if we consider its specifications, and they can guarantee two days of battery life. But which one lasts more and which has the highest value for money? Here we will try to answer these questions.

Design
Do not expect a great design from these handsets. All of them are made with a cheap plastic body, despite it may seem the opposite in some pictures like the one above. The look I prefer the most is the one of the Realme 5 since it comes with a reflective back in gradient colors and with a prismatic effect. Realme 5 also guarantees splash resistance. But you should keep note that Samsung Galaxy M30s is the most compact device, despite it mounts a bigger battery, due to its smaller display and a very high screen-to-body ratio.
Display
The display of the Samsung Galaxy M30s is the most amazing one and it is even one of the best in the market if we consider the price range. It is the only phone of this trio to sport a Super AMOLED panel with a Full HD+ resolution, so it provides a higher level of detail, deeper and more brilliant colors. Unfortunately, the display is slightly smaller than the ones found on Oppo A9 2020 and Realme 5, but we recommend it since both Oppo A9 2020 and Realme 5 are equipped with below-average HD+ displays. In each case, the fingerprint scanner is placed on the back.
Specs & Software
The Exynos 9611 chipset mounted on the Samsung Galaxy M30s is generally better than the Snapdragon 665 since it offers high performance and more efficiency, thanks to the 10 nm production process. But it is not a huge difference. That is why I prefer the Oppo A9 2020: despite it is fueled by the Snapdragon 665, it is the only to sport up to 8 GB of RAM and UFS 2.1 internal storage making it faster in a lot of tasks. Android 9 Pie is installed out of the box on all the phones. Each of these devices features a micro SD dedicated slot to expand the internal storage without renouncing to the dual SIM slot.
Camera
The most advanced camera department on the paper belongs to the Oppo A9 2020. It has a quad camera including a 48 MP main sensor, an ultrawide lens, and a depth sensor, as well as a nice 16 MP front camera. It has a brighter focal aperture than Samsung Galaxy M30s and one more sensor, and it is even able to record 4K videos. Realme 5 is the worst one due to its 12 MP main sensor, but it has a useful dedicated macro camera for close shots.
Battery
All of these devices are battery phones and they can ensure two days of battery life even with pretty intensive usage. But still, there is a big difference between Samsung Galaxy M30s and its two rivals. The Galaxy M30s has a much bigger 6000 mAh battery and even a very efficient AMOLED display, so it lasts more on a single charge. It even supports the fastest charging technology, even though this does not mean it will charge faster since it has a bigger battery. On the other hand, the Oppo A9 2020 features reverse charging and it is the only which can be used as a power bank to charge other devices.
Price
Oppo A9 2020 is sold with a €249/$275 price on the global market, while Samsung Galaxy M30s starts from €259/$285. Realme 5 is not available globally and it costs €185/$204 in its base variant, in the Asian market. But if you are a global user you should not worry too much, since Realme 5 loses this comparison (despite it would probably have a more affordable price). Oppo A9 2020 is the best if you are searching for the best cameras and reverse charging, but if you want the longest battery life and a better display, then Samsung Galaxy M30s is a more correct option for your needs.
BOE Display is one of the leading names in display technology. The company has built a reputation for itself in the aspect of LCD screens using its proprietary Advanced Super Dimension Switch (ADSDS) technology for liquid-crystal display (LCD) panels. The Chinese firm has also made some inroads into the aspect of OLED displays but still fall behind Samsung and LG when it comes to OLED panels. BOE has been striving to catch up with Samsung and has now included Micro LEDs to its product development.
Chinese tech blog IThomes quotes DigiTimes to have reported that BOE has started mass production of MicroLED panels in Kunming, Yunnan Province of China. The report states that mass production started in October this year and the company is looking for partners in MicroLED applications.
BOE had in May of this year demonstrated its innovative technology and solutions such as the 0.39-inch Micro-OLED AR with the highest 5644 PPI in the world at SID Display Week 2019. The microLED display was originally developed for use in telescopes, but BOE is now using it for AR/VR glasses, first-person view angle (FPV) goggles and projectors for drones.
MicroLED uses self-emission backlight just like OLED panels, unlike the traditional LCD displays which require LED backlight modules to emit light through layers from behind to generate images.
Micro LED can achieve effects such as very high contrast, extremely deep blacks, and fast response time just like OLED. However, Micro LED has higher brightness and is more stable than OLED because of its inorganic nature. In other words, red, green, and blue Micro LED pixels do not have luminance decay issues. Compared with that, each OLED pixel more or less suffers from luminance decay and the speed of decay varies. Despite these superior features, it may take a long time before microLED gains prominence over OLED. Samsung had deployed the technology on its The Wall TV but there have not been so many applications after that.
Vivo India had launched the Vivo Z1x smartphone in September. It had arrived in two variants such as 6 GB RAM + 64 GB storage and 6 GB RAM + 128 storage. In October, the 8 GB RAM + 128 GB storage model was introduced. 91mobiles has revealed today that the Chinese firm has also launched 4 GB RAM + 128 GB storage edition with a price tag of Rs. 16,990 (~$237).
The publication claims that it has learnt from its sources that the 4 GB RAM + 128 GB storage edition of the Vivo Z1x will be available through its first flash in India from Nov. 12. It will be arriving with an introductory pricing of Rs. 15,990 (~$223). Later, it will continue to sell for Rs. 16,990 (~$237). The 6 GB RAM + 64 GB storage edition also carries the same pricing.
The Vivo Z1x variants such as 6 GB RAM + 128 GB storage and 8 GB RAM + 128 GB storage are respectively priced at Rs. 18,990 (~$265) and Rs. 21,990 (~$307). The phone is available for purchase in colors like Fusion Blue and Phantom Purple in India.
The Vivo Z1x smartphone has a 6.38-inch S-AMOLED full HD+ display with waterdrop notch. The display supports 19.5:9 aspect ratio and is embedded with an in-screen fingerprint reader. The Snapdragon 712 chipset powers the phone. The FunTouch OS 9.1 based Android 9 Pie OS runs on the device.
The Vivo Z1x has a 48-megapixel (Sony IMX586) + 8-megapixel (ultrawide) + 2-megapixel (depth assist) triple rear cameras. It has a front-facing camera of 32-megapixel. The 4,500mAh battery of the Vivo Z1x supports 22.5W fast charging through USB-C. The other connectivity features of the Vivo Z1x include 4G VoLTE, dual-SIM support, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, GPS and 3.5mm headphone slot.
Qualcomm is expected to announce the Snapdragon 865 processor during its Snapdragon Tech Summit scheduled for December 3. The processor will be the brain behind most of the flagship phones scheduled to launch next year. Thanks to a new leak, we don’t have to wait for the launch day, which still about three weeks away, to know the details about the processor.
Chinese blogger and leakster @Digital Chat Station has revealed the configuration of Qualcomm’s next processor. According to a Weibo post, the Snapdragon 865 will be an octa-core processor just like the Snapdragon 855 and Snapdragon 855+.
The SoC will embrace the same 1+3+4 core arrangement as its predecessors. The Snapdragon 865’s CPU will have 1 x 2.84GHz Cortex-A77 (custom Kryo core) + 3 x 2.42GHz Cortex-A77 cores (custom Kryo cores) + 4 x 1.8GHz Cortex-A55 cores (custom Kryo cores). The GPU is revealed to be the Adreno 650 clocked at 587MHz.
The performance cores have the same clock speed as the performance cores of the Snapdragon 855. However, the switch from Cortex-A76 which the SD855’s Kryo 485 is based on will bring improvements in performance. According to Arm, the Cortex-A77 brings a 20% improvement in performance compared to the Cortex-A76.
The power efficiency cores have been unchanged as they are still based on the Cortex-A55 cores. The new GPU is expected to bring between 17% to 20% increase in performance.
The Snapdragon 865 will most likely appear first in a Samsung phone, specifically the Galaxy S11 series. The 7nm mobile chipset is expected to be fabricated by TSMC and not Samsung. It should also feature an integrated 5G modem, specifically the Snapdragon X55 modem.
Huawei last week released a revised EMUI 10 update roadmap which stipulated when the tech giant would push the latest update, including Stable ROMs to specific models. The Huawei P30 and P30 Pro are now receiving EMUI 10 update which usher in Android 10.
The release is consistent with the mid-November release time frame listed in the revised EMUI 10 update schedule. We must add, though, that the update is for P30 and P30 Pro models in China. No word yet on the global release time frame for the models but that should happen any moment from now. Recall that P30 Pro users in India had started getting EMUI 10 beta update in September.
The Mate 20 series including the Mate 20 X (4G) is next in line to get updated to EMUI 10 stable and that is scheduled to begin in mid/late November. The Honor 20, Honor 20 Pro, V20 and Honor Magic 2 are also scheduled to get Android 10-based MagicUI 3.0 Stable ROM late-November.
EMUI 10 is an important update for Huawei phones as it improves smoothness and performance on existing devices. The company has even added a system-wide dark mode which even forces apps that don’t have a dark mode to comply. The system settings are better organized in this new version and the OS is designed to offer a better experience when working other devices like a Windows 10 laptop. EMUI 10 allows the smartphone to cast its screen directly on to the Windows 10 device, offering a seamless working experience. The update equally brings Android 10-inherent features.
In Setpemeber, Samsung had announced the Exynos 980 as its first 5G integrated mobile chipset. It is designed to power upper mid-range phones. Now, the official website of the company has detailed information on the specs and features of the Exynos 980. The Exynos chipsets are primarily used by Samsung to power its range of Galaxy devices. However, smartphone-makers like Meizu and Motorola have used them in the past. Vivo is the latest vendor to borrow the Exynos 980 chipset for the upcoming Vivo X30 smartphone. It is also speculated that the rumored Galaxy A71 phone could end up as the first phone powered by the Exynos 980 SoC.
Samsung Exynos 980 Specifications and Features
Samsung listed the specifications of the Exynos 980 on their official website, and its major highlight is that it has a built-in 5G modem. The chipset is made up of 2.2GHz dual-core Cortex-A77 and 1.8GHz hexa-core Cortex-A55 with ARM Mali-G76 MP5 GPU and integrated NPU. It supports WQHD+ displays with resolution up to 3360 x 1440 pixels and features a 5G modem. The Exynos 980 supports LPDDR4X RAM and UFS 2.1, eMMC 5.1 storage. The chipset is designed using 8nm FinFET architecture.
With its digital signal processor (DSP) and neural processing unit (NPU), the Exynos 980 delivers AI capabilities for pro-grade cameras and intelligent assistants. Featuring a powerful octa-core processor, the Exynos 980 is designed to handle intensive tasks required for low latency, high-bandwidth 5G spectrum with ease.
The advanced DSP and NPU allow on-device AI-powered tasks rather than sending personal information to the server for processing. Effectively reducing response time, improving security and data privacy. The Exynos 980 enhances smartphone applications with better content filtering, secure user authentication, intelligent camera, and mixed reality.
The Intelligent pro-grade camera on the Exynos 980 supports up to five individual sensors. The SoC is able to process three sensors simultaneously, offering a true multi-camera experience. The processor supports sensors up to 108-megapixel and up to 20-megapixel + 20-megapixel dual cameras. While the NPU detects objects or scenes and allows the ISP to automatically fine-tune the exposure, hue, white balance, sharpness, saturation and more, leading to professional results.
The octa-core setup on the Exynos 980 comprises of two powerful Arm Cortex-A77 cores and six efficient Cortex-A55 cores for optimal performance. It is designed to possess complex computing capabilities required to handle higher demands in the 5G era. The SoC comes loaded with the ARM Mali-G76 MP5 GPU that offers the ultimate 3D processing capabilities required during an intense gaming session. The GPU reduces gaming lags and loading times considerably.
The multi-format codec (MFEC) on the Exynos 980 supports 4K UHD encoding and decoding at 120fps. Users can blur out the video backgrounds by adding greater depth-of-field, using the NPU’s AI capabilities. Exynos 980 also supports Wi-Fi 6 that offers faster speeds allowing a lag-free online gaming experience or buffer-free high-resolution video streaming session over the Wi-Fi network. The chipset also supports Bluetooth v5.0 for multi-device connectivity and GNSS for accurate location mapping.
In related news, Samsung has been struggling in the Chinese smartphone market for a while. Things are so bad that the company stopped manufacturing phones in China since October 2019. It is now hoping to arrest the declining sales figures with 5G. The company plans to bring the Galaxy Fold 5G to China as the W20 5G powered with the new Snapdragon 855+ SoC on Nov. 19. It is also expected to introduce 5G-enabled smartphones under the Galaxy A-series. In September, Samsung had launched the Galaxy A90 5G as an affordable 5G-ready flagship phone in China.
The Galaxy A71 is believed to be the next affordable 5G phone from the company. It could be Samsung’s first 5G mid-range smartphone to be powered by the Exynos 980. It remains to be seen whether it goes official before the Vivo X30 series that is slated to go official next month in China. Samsung currently uses flagship chipsets like the Snapdragon 855 and Exynos 9825 on its premium devices. It needs a cost-effective 5G SoC and that is where the Exynos 980 fits the equation.

Microsoft’s Surface Duo dual-screen smartphone will launch next year and should be available in time for the holidays. The phone isn’t the first foldable device with a dual-display and it will not be the last. We may even see one from Samsung according to the latest reports.
Apparently, Samsung has been granted a patent for a foldable display by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The patent was filed back in 2013 but was just granted late last month.
Based on this, Samsung may decide to come up with a competitor to the Microsoft Surface Duo, and with their experience with the Galaxy Fold with respect to software, they may have a better implementation than Microsoft.
Above is a diagram from the patent. Since it was filed back in 2013 it is understandable why we still have capacitive buttons rather than software buttons. So if Samsung is actually planning a dual-display device, it sure won’t look like what is in the image above.
