Next Apple Watch may feature Touch ID under display

Although the Apple Watch is an impressive bit of technology, the Cupertino-based electronics giant continues to look for innovative ways to improve its highly popular smartwatch. Based on the latest patent filing with the US Trademark and Patents Office, it can be said that Apple could be contemplating the idea of adding Touch ID to the display of the Apple Watch.

The news first appeared on Patently Apple last week claimed that the Cupertino company could be planning to introduce a touch-sensitive device, a force-sensitive device, a temperature-sensitive device and/or a fingerprint sensor underneath the display. This will be done by relocating the internal watch antennas within the wristband. While the current-generation Apple Watch can be used to unlock MacBooks, make secure payments through Apple Pay and more, native support for Touch ID will throw a whole new level of authentication to the mix.

Apple Watch patent design with Touch ID

The patent application titled “Antenna Assemblies for Watch Bands” explains how Apple plans to embed antennas within the wrist band, ensuring the perfect balance between form, functionality, and comfort. The watch band enables wireless communication via the stretchable antenna while protecting its structural integrity and operational capabilities. The watch band flexes, stretches and bends freely with the body and protects the antenna from damage caused by external impacts.

Embedding cellular, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth antennas within the band is a tough challenge, considering the amount of stress and torture these bands have to endure. Embedding antennas within the wristband would dramatically reduce aftermarket replacement options and increase the prices. Apple has high hopes for this technology, enough to file a patent. As with any new technology, it is never known whether Apple will ever bring these innovations. Nonetheless, it is interesting to see the direction that the company plans to take for the future.

In related news, Apple slashed the prices of the Watch Series 3 in India after the launch of the Series 5. Prices of the Series 3 GPS now start at Rs. 20,990 (~$294) while the GPS + Cellular variant is available at Rs. 29,990 (~$418). The Apple Watch Series 5 is priced from Rs. 40,900 (~$572) for the GPS-only variant while the GPS + cellular variant is priced at Rs. 49,900 (~$698). The Watch Series 5 flaunts a Low-Temperature Polysilicon and Oxide (LTPO) Retina display with a variable refresh rate, eliminating the need for refreshing the display, thus conserving power.

MediaTek to debut premium MT6885 5G SoC during November 26 Summit

MediaTek has confirmed that it will be unveiling its first 5G chipset at its annual Summit event on 26 November. According to Mediatek’s website, the upcoming MT6885Z chipset is based on the Helio M70 modem that supports 5G capabilities and is built on the 7nm die lithography. Additionally, the chipset features the ARM Cortex-A77 CPU and Mali-G77 GPU.

Aside from that, the new chipset is also expected to support 4K video encoding and decoding at 60 fps, as well as the capability to work with smartphone camera sensors of up to 80MP resolution. All on the aforementioned 7nm FinFET process. Allegedly the MT6885 is already in mass production and should start shipping to manufacturers in Q1 2020.

The company will also bring out an aggressively positioned mid-range 5G capable processor in the MT6873, one of the first of it’s kind, though it’s only expected to enter mass production only in the second quarter of 2020. It may even be more efficient than other competitors, as MediaTek may be planning to utilize TSMC’s upcoming 6nm manufacturing node.

Prior to this, the company had also debuted two other chips to its line-up earlier this year: the gaming-focused Helio G90, and the mid-range Helio P65 SoC. It is also rumored that Redmi is working on a 5G smartphone powered by MediaTek’s chipset which isn’t surprising given that the Xiaomi sub-brand opted for Helio G90T chipset for its Redmi Note 8 Pro.

Samsung is working on a 108MP smartphone, reveals camera app code

Just when we thought 64MP was likely going to be the upper limit for smartphone cameras, Samsung announced the ISOCELL Bright HMX sensor with a massive 108MP resolution. This has set a new benchmark for smartphone cameras and currently, Xiaomi is the only manufacturer to have smartphones that use this chipset. But that’s likely going to change in the coming months as Samsung has added support for 108MP resolution in the camera app code of the latest OneUI 2.0 beta.

Samsung Galaxy S10 Smoky Blue featured
The current Galaxy S10+ comes with a modest 12MP +12MP+16MP camera setup

While checking the camera app code in the latest beta version, XDA’s Max Weinback found that the camera app now supports a resolution of 12,000 by 9,000 pixels, essentially translating to 108MP. Given that Samsung is usually serious about new feature additions to its software, it’s very likely that the company is currently working on a new smartphone with the 108MP sensor.

Xiaomi’s Mi CC9 Pro / Mi Note 10 Pro and the Mi Mix Alpha are the only two smartphones that employ this 108MP Samsung sensor on its back. While we don’t know which Samsung model will get it, there are rumors that say that the S11 series could feature this sensor.

Just like the CC9 Pro, the new Samsung smartphone should employ pixel binning to churn out 27MP or even 12MP photos from this 108MP sensor.

MediaTek will reportedly ship its mid-range MT6873 5G chip to Huawei next year

MediaTek is betting big on 5G to make a solid comeback into the smartphone industry. And according to a new report from Taiwan, MediaTek will be shipping its mid-range 5G chip to Huawei next year. This will be the second 5G chip from the company, code-named MT6873, targeted at the affordable segment of the smartphone market.

MediaTek 5G SoC Featured

For the past couple of years, MediaTek has focused on developing products for 5G technology. And as 5G networks have started to roll out across the globe, the company is back into the limelight. The company’s flagship-grade 5G chipset, codenamed MT6885Z, will be officially announced on November 26. While that’ll power the expensive 5G handsets in the market in the coming months, the MT6873 chipset is really the chip we should be excited about.

MT6873 will be targeted at the mid-range smartphone market and should end up on phones around $300. We still haven’t seen any affordable 5G mid-range smartphones in the market but by Q2 2020, things are expected to change. This chip is said to power Huawei’s mid-range smartphones and we could see it inside one or two Honor 5G devices too.

Huawei’s high-end Kirin 990 5G will power its flagship models, which opens up the spot for mid-range and low-end devices. In the past couple of years, Qualcomm has traditionally supplied some chips for Huawei and Honor’s mid-rangers. However, with MT6873’s entry, MediaTek could grab a small share of those shipments next year.

MediaTek is also reportedly developing a third 5G chip for the smartphone market, targeted at a more affordable price segment. The chip should power smartphones that cost around $250.

Samsung strikes deal with ultra-thin glass supplier for upcoming foldable smartphones

The Samsung Galaxy Fold’s launch that was carried at the beginning of this year was marred with controversy as the display of its review units started malfunctioning. This resulted in Samsung having to delay the launch until September 2019, six months after the formal announcement. The Galaxy Fold has recorded impressive sales figures ever since and even went out-of-stock in a few markets. Samsung has now signed an exclusive deal with Korean supplier Dowoo Insis for Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG) panels that will be used on next-generation foldable displays.

The Samsung Galaxy Fold has an integrated polyamide film over its flexible display panel, which resembles a screen protection film. If a person tries to remove this film, they accidentally end up damaging the display. After the marketing nightmare post the media launch back in May 2019, Samsung tucked the edges of the film underneath the Fold’s frame so that people would not rip off the display.

Another major reason for seeking an alternative to the polyamide film is the trade restrictions imposed by Japan on exporting goods to South Korea since August 2019. The film used by Samsung on the Galaxy Fold was supplied by Japanese firm Sumitomo.

Samsung foldable

The UTG supplied by Dowoo is said to be thinner than 100 microns, with certain speculations putting the figure close to 30 microns, which is half the thickness of the human hair. UTG is an ultra-thin tempered glass that can fold without breaking and is more scratch-resistant than the polyamide film used on the Galaxy Fold. Dowoo’s current manufacturing capacity stands at 500,000 units. Samsung Venture has invested approximately KRW 12 billion as part of the deal.

The contract is apparently mid to long term, with Samsung planning to invest even more in the coming days to increase Dowoo’s manufacturing capacity in South Korea and build new units in Vietnam. According to Samsung’s projection, the company is aiming to sell between five and six million foldable smartphones by 2020. Dowoo needs to match its production capacity to meet demands. If the foldable smartphone market picks up the pace as per Samsung’s estimate, Dowoo needs to supply a lot more UTG panels in the coming years. At least Samsung will not have to worry about rival companies poaching Dowoo’s UTG panels as the exclusive deal makes Samsung the sole owner of every panel manufactured by Dowoo Insis.

Samsung to sell Galaxy M series phones through offline stores in India

Samsung launched its Galaxy M-series smartphones in India to counter the massive decline in sales volume recorded in the last few financial quarters. The M-series that was introduced this year is an online exclusive and is sold via Amazon, Flipkart, and the official Samsung website in the subcontinent. The only offline retailers selling the M-series are the Samsung Experience Stores located throughout the country. However, that could change soon as the chaebol is planning to introduce the next Galaxy M device through its third-party offline retail chain in 2020.

According to a post by The Economic Times, offline retail unions have demanded major smartphone manufacturers like Samsung, OPPO, Vivo, and Xiaomi start working with them again. The recent discounts and online-exclusive launches have hit the offline market quite bad, which is now recording a sales decline of nearly 30 – 40%.

The country’s trade organizations like the All India Mobile Retailers Association and All India Traders recently voiced their concerns regarding the destructive online pricing strategy. The aggressive pricing, especially during the holiday season, is encouraging people to purchase smartphones online, further bleeding the offline stores.

Galaxy M40 featured

Samsung decided to heed the demands of its offline retail partners and sell the upcoming Galaxy M-series smartphones through offline stores as well. Representatives from Samsung India’s mobile phone business team informed retailers about this decision via WhatsApp on Friday. The government had earlier warned ecommerce platforms against disruptive pricing. Smartphone manufacturers are finally starting to take heed.

In related news, Samsung is gearing up to launch its next M-series device in India. The chaebol recently sent a notification to its retail partners in the subcontinent that read, “We look forward to providing the next M-series smartphone at the same price and at the same time. We shall assess the value proposition for our retail partners and consumers and plan our course of action accordingly”. Despite the details being far from clear, Samsung will most-likely introduce the Galaxy M50 on Nov. 15. The smartphone will be sold via online and offline retailers.

Although details of the Galaxy M50 are unknown, its specifications are slated to be a notch higher than the Galaxy M40 that it succeeds. The M40 flaunts a 6.3-inch full-HD+ display with a punch-hole camera with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 certification. The device is powered by the Snapdragon 675 chipset with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage, expandable up to 512GB with a microSD card. The smartphone features a triple-camera setup at the rear consisting of 32-megapixel, 8-megapixel and 5-megapixel sensors. The front camera uses a 16-megapixel lens. Powering the Galaxy M40 is a 3,500 mAh battery with fast charging. The device runs on Android 9.0 Pie-based One UI. Security measures include a fingerprint scanner on the rear panel and Face Unlock.

PhoneBook transforms your smartphone into a touchscreen laptop

Over the years, we have seen multiple crowdfunding projects come up with ways for us to be able to use our phones more productively. There is the $99 SuperBook that allowed you to connect your Android phone to what we can call a laptop shell and use it as a laptop. It raised $2.6 million during its crowdfunding in 2016.

In the same year, there was also a similar device called the NexDock but with a $149 price tag and included support for phones with Windows 10 Continuum. Way before the SuperBook and NexDock, Motorola launched the Lapdock 100 which worked with some of its Android phones. This year, another manufacturer is giving it a go again and their product is called the PhoneBook.

The PhoneBook is also a laptop shell with a 15.6-inch touchscreen Full HD display and a full-sized keyboard and trackpad. All you have to do is plug in “ANY” phone to it and you have a working laptop.  Anyware, the makers of PhoneBook, say your phone is the CPU and every time you get a new phone, it is like you have a new computer. It also uses your phone’s storage to save the work you do on it.

With the PhoneBook, you are not only able to run the apps on your phone on a larger screen, but you can also run Windows Cloud PC apps. For entertainment, the PhoneBook has stereo speakers, so you can enjoy your movies with better audio than what your phone’s speaker pumps out. The PhoneBook is also touted as the first device that allows you to use the keyboard and mouse to play mobile games, a feature said to be unavailable on Samsung’s DeX.

The PhoneBook has an 8-hour battery life and charges your phone when connected to it. The PhoneBook as 2 x USB ports, an HDMI input port, a USB-C video input port, and a 3.5mm audio jack. It also has a reset button. It has a 12V/2A power adapter which is a bit disappointing as USB-C charging would have been better.

The PhoneBook will work with all Android phones except those powered by a MediaTek processor which means a large percentage of phones are excluded. It will also work with iPhones.

The device is available on Kickstarter for crowdfunding starting at $169 for backers. When it launches, it will sell for $249.

Realme wins big in India as Xiaomi continues lead in Q3 – IDC

Research firm IDC has released its third-quarter smartphone market report for India. The report covers phone sales between July and September and it shows that a total of 46.6 million smartphone shipments were effected, which is higher than the 42.6 million units shipped during the same period last year.

The improvement in the market was felt by all the top five brands, except Samsung, with a YoY increase in their shipments. The top five spots consist of Xiaomi, Samsung, Vivo, Realme and Oppo.

Xiaomi continued its dominance of the Indian market with an estimated shipment of 12.6 million units, representing an 8.5% yearly growth. With a total shipping estimate of 8.8 million units, Samsung came in second but this is lower than the 9.6 million units shipped the year prior.

BBK subsidiaries Vivo, Realme and OPPO completed the top five. Vivo is reported to have shipped an estimated 7.1 million smartphone with a hugely impressive 58.7% yearly growth. If you think this is impressive as well, wait until you see Realme’s growth curve. The new OPPO spin-off shipped a huge 7.1 million units in Q3 2019, up from 1.3 million in the same period last year. This massive shipment represents a growth of 401.3%. IDC fingers the affordable Realme C2, Realme 3 and 5 series for the success.  Oppo itself managed 5.5 million shipments and a solid 92.3% year on year growth. This indeed shows that BBK’s aim for creating a sub-brand out of OPPO is spot-on.

In terms of price category, the report shows that the INR 14,000 ($200) and under bracket accounted for 80% of all smartphone shipments in India for the period. This perhaps, explains why Realme is king. Affordable pricing. The INR 14,000 – 35,000 ($200-500) category got almost 19%, leaving just over a percent for the $500+ phones. Apple is king in the premium class with 51.3% share while the fastest-growing segment is the INR 21,000 – 35,000 ($300-500) range.

Oppo A9 2020 vs Realme 5 vs Samsung Galaxy M30s: Specs Comparison

One of the smartest things to do when looking for affordable smartphones is considering devices with long battery life. Since battery life is one of the biggest problems on modern smartphones, the efficient components often present on affordable devices paired with a big battery can ensure a very long battery life so that you can even forget your charger at home for at least two days. In this article, we compared three of the most amazing battery phones available in the midrange segment, from three different brands. We are talking about the Oppo A9 2020, the Realme 5 by Oppo’s sub-brand and the Samsung Galaxy M30s. All of them come with huge batteries, especially if we consider its specifications, and they can guarantee two days of battery life. But which one lasts more and which has the highest value for money? Here we will try to answer these questions.

Design

Do not expect a great design from these handsets. All of them are made with a cheap plastic body, despite it may seem the opposite in some pictures like the one above. The look I prefer the most is the one of the Realme 5 since it comes with a reflective back in gradient colors and with a prismatic effect. Realme 5 also guarantees splash resistance. But you should keep note that Samsung Galaxy M30s is the most compact device, despite it mounts a bigger battery, due to its smaller display and a very high screen-to-body ratio.

Display

The display of the Samsung Galaxy M30s is the most amazing one and it is even one of the best in the market if we consider the price range. It is the only phone of this trio to sport a Super AMOLED panel with a Full HD+ resolution, so it provides a higher level of detail, deeper and more brilliant colors. Unfortunately, the display is slightly smaller than the ones found on Oppo A9 2020 and Realme 5, but we recommend it since both Oppo A9 2020 and Realme 5 are equipped with below-average HD+ displays. In each case, the fingerprint scanner is placed on the back.

Specs & Software

The Exynos 9611 chipset mounted on the Samsung Galaxy M30s is generally better than the Snapdragon 665 since it offers high performance and more efficiency, thanks to the 10 nm production process. But it is not a huge difference. That is why I prefer the Oppo A9 2020: despite it is fueled by the Snapdragon 665, it is the only to sport up to 8 GB of RAM and UFS 2.1 internal storage making it faster in a lot of tasks. Android 9 Pie is installed out of the box on all the phones. Each of these devices features a micro SD dedicated slot to expand the internal storage without renouncing to the dual SIM slot.

Camera

The most advanced camera department on the paper belongs to the Oppo A9 2020. It has a quad camera including a 48 MP main sensor, an ultrawide lens, and a depth sensor, as well as a nice 16 MP front camera. It has a brighter focal aperture than Samsung Galaxy M30s and one more sensor, and it is even able to record 4K videos. Realme 5 is the worst one due to its 12 MP main sensor, but it has a useful dedicated macro camera for close shots.

Battery

All of these devices are battery phones and they can ensure two days of battery life even with pretty intensive usage. But still, there is a big difference between Samsung Galaxy M30s and its two rivals. The Galaxy M30s has a much bigger 6000 mAh battery and even a very efficient AMOLED display, so it lasts more on a single charge. It even supports the fastest charging technology, even though this does not mean it will charge faster since it has a bigger battery. On the other hand, the Oppo A9 2020 features reverse charging and it is the only which can be used as a power bank to charge other devices.

Price

Oppo A9 2020 is sold with a €249/$275 price on the global market, while Samsung Galaxy M30s starts from €259/$285. Realme 5 is not available globally and it costs €185/$204 in its base variant, in the Asian market. But if you are a global user you should not worry too much, since Realme 5 loses this comparison (despite it would probably have a more affordable price). Oppo A9 2020 is the best if you are searching for the best cameras and reverse charging, but if you want the longest battery life and a better display, then Samsung Galaxy M30s is a more correct option for your needs.

BOE Display reportedly starts mass production of micro LED panels

BOE Display is one of the leading names in display technology. The company has built a reputation for itself in the aspect of LCD screens using its proprietary Advanced Super Dimension Switch (ADSDS) technology for liquid-crystal display (LCD) panels. The Chinese firm has also made some inroads into the aspect of OLED displays but still fall behind Samsung and LG when it comes to OLED panels. BOE has been striving to catch up with Samsung and has now included Micro LEDs to its product development.

Chinese tech blog IThomes quotes DigiTimes to have reported that BOE has started mass production of MicroLED panels in Kunming, Yunnan Province of China. The report states that mass production started in October this year and the company is looking for partners in MicroLED applications.

BOE had in May of this year demonstrated its innovative technology and solutions such as the 0.39-inch Micro-OLED AR with the highest 5644 PPI in the world at SID Display Week 2019. The microLED display was originally developed for use in telescopes, but BOE is now using it for AR/VR glasses, first-person view angle (FPV) goggles and projectors for drones.

MicroLED uses self-emission backlight just like OLED panels, unlike the traditional LCD displays which require LED backlight modules to emit light through layers from behind to generate images.

Micro LED can achieve effects such as very high contrast, extremely deep blacks, and fast response time just like OLED. However, Micro LED has higher brightness and is more stable than OLED because of its inorganic nature. In other words, red, green, and blue Micro LED pixels do not have luminance decay issues. Compared with that, each OLED pixel more or less suffers from luminance decay and the speed of decay varies. Despite these superior features, it may take a long time before microLED gains prominence over OLED. Samsung had deployed the technology on its The Wall TV but there have not been so many applications after that.
