Update or Lose Internet Connectivity: Apple warns iPhone 5 users

Apple iPhone 5 was released back in September 2012 and we’ll hardly see anyone using the seven-year-old device. But it turns out, there are a few who are still stuck on the iPhone 5 model and Apple has just started sending out an important warning on their phones.

iPhone 5 Alert (Source: 9to5Mac)

According to 9to5Mac, Apple is sending out a tall full-screen message to iPhone 5 users asking them to update their devices to iOS 10.3.4 version before November 3, 2019. Apple further warns that if they fail to do so in time, they are set to lose internet connectivity on their devices. Post-November 3, they won’t be able to access the internet in its entirety, which means no browsing in Safari, emails, iCloud, or even Apple store services.

The iOS 10.3.4 comes with a GPS bug fix that messes up the time and date on Apple devices due to the GPS time rollover issue. After November 3, iPhone 5 users will have to take the hard route to fix their internet, which includes backing up their data and restoring it using a Mac or a PC since both OTA updates and iCloud backup will have stopped working.

Apple’s GPS rollover issue has impacted old hardware like the iPhone 4S and the older iPad (retina) and iPad 2 models. While the issue would have stopped the GPS function in these devices, the iPhone 5’s case was a lot worse, which forced Apple to send out these alerts. Updates for the affected iPad and iPhone models were rolled out a while back.

ASUS Zenfone 5Z users get a taste of Android 10 based ZenUI 6 via open beta update

Back in August, ASUS started recruiting beta testers for the Zenfone 6 and Zenfone 5Z models. However, it was a closed beta run and only a handful of users got a taste of the early Android 10 based ZenUI 6 build. Now, ASUS is rolling out its first Android 10 open beta build based on ZenUI 6 for Zenfone 5Z users. Those who are on the beta build should have already received the new update (v100.04.44.67).

ASUS Zenfone 5Z
ASUS Zenfone 5Z

ZenUI 6 on Android 10 brings the experience very close to stock Android. It features Android 10’s system-wide dark mode as well as new navigation gestures. The security patch is now updated for October 2019. There are a few ASUS centric features in the update as well, such as Game Genie, one-handed mode, and a native screen recorder.

ASUS is yet to reveal an official schedule for the stable Android 10 update for the Zenfone 5Z. The current beta build has a bunch of bugs and hence, it’s not recommended to flash it for your daily use.

Pixel 4 display won’t run at 90Hz for apps like Google Maps & WeChat (4 apps blacklisted)

Pixel 4 series’ 90Hz screen was supposed to be one of its stand out features. But over the past one week, the phone’s screen has been standing out for all the wrong reasons. After it was recently discovered that Pixel 4 and 4 XL’s screen refresh rate changed according to screen brightness, 9to5Google has just found out that Google has blacklisted one of its own apps from running at 90Hz refresh rate.

Google Pixel 4 XL

According to a review of the Pixel 4 and 4 XL’s source code, it was discovered that both these models set the refresh rate to the default 60Hz when running apps like Google Maps. Three other apps, namely, Pokémon Go, Waze, and WeChat have also been blacklisted by the company from running at 90Hz. While it makes sense to limit Pokémon Go (Niantic capped the app’s refresh rate to 30 fps earlier this year due to its gameplay design) and even Waze and Maps’ refresh rate (these two maps applications were already said to lock in refresh rate at 60Hz ), WeChat has been blacklisted simply because of “poor performance”.

WeChat is a very powerful app with a lot of features and some of them might not be working well under 90Hz refresh rate. However, we haven’t heard of similar issues on OnePlus 7 Pro or 7T, both of which have 90Hz displays.

Fortunately, this is not something an update can’t solve. Once WeChat fixes the performance issue under 90Hz refresh rate, Google can send out an update to remove it from its blacklist.

Anyway WeChat users on OnePlus 7 Pro or 7T/Pro? Let us know if you guys are facing any issues at 90Hz.

Crazy Foldable designs we’ve seen so far

We heard it dozens of times: 5G and foldable smartphones have been the main revolutions of 2019 in the mobile sector. A lot of smartphone manufacturers came up with their own form factors experimenting foldable display: this year we saw a lot of crazy foldable designs that will or may hit the shelves in the next future. In this article, we collected all the craziest foldable designs we have seen so far. The article only includes smartphones with flexible displays, so do not be surprised after not finding devices such as the upcoming Microsoft Surface Duo or the Surface Neo which are just devices with dual displays.

Outward folding by Huawei

Huawei MAte X 5g

Among the foldable smartphones in commerce, the most appreciated was the Mate X by Huawei. It has an outward folding design that allows using both the displays generated when the display is closed. The secondary display also allows you to use the quad rear camera for selfies as well, that is one of the main reasons why I appreciate it so much. While unfolded, the foldable smartphone has a diagonal of 8 inches, while the primary display you can see when the smartphone is folded has a 6.6-inch diagonal. The phone has a unique AMOLED panel with a Full HD+ resolution and it is powered by a Kirin 980 chipset paired with 8 GB of RAM and 512 GB of internal storage. In 2020 Huawei will release an upgraded version called Mate Xs which will boast a more advanced Kirin 990 chipset that is the same found on the Mate 30 series.

Inward folding by Samsung

Samsung Galaxy Fold 5G

The Galaxy Fold by Samsung is the world’s first foldable smartphone released by a mainstream manufacturer. It has a completely different design compared to the Huawei Mate X. The Samsung Galaxy Fold comes with an inward folding design, meaning that the foldable display is placed internally. While the smartphone is folded, the flexible display is totally covered, but the phone features a smaller external display with 4.6-inch size. While unfolded, the smartphone has a 7.3-inch diagonal. It even sports two camera departments: a triple camera on the rear side with a variable focal aperture and a triple camera near the foldable display.

Dual folding by Xiaomi

Xiaomi Foldable Smartphone Featured Letsgodigital
Xiaomi Foldable Smartphone Featured Letsgodigital

Xiaomi is working on a foldable smartphone with a double fold design. The company recently showcased it in an official promo video in which you can clearly see a device that can be folded twice with the phone’s display on the outside. According to the company, the MIUI has been adjusted accordingly with gesture controls and other features, and the phone is able to become either a tablet or a traditional smartphone in a very practical way. The phone folds from the two sides of the main smartphone’s screen and it closes in the middle of the rear side of the device. In the video, we can clearly notice a camera icon on the screen, but we can not see any camera on the phone. Instead, there is a power key and a USB Type-C port to charge the battery.

Tri-folding by TCL

TCL showcased a lot of foldable smartphone prototypes this year. But the last one which surprised us is the foldable phone we wrote about yesterday. It sports a tri-folding display with two hinges: the first one folds in while the second one folds out, so it is able to fold in a zig zag manner in order to take less space. When unfolded, the TCL prototype has a total diagonal of 10 inches making it a real tablet-sized device. The phone even sports a quad camera setup on the rear side. Unfortunately, when it is folded, the device is very thick, but it is compact. We still do not know when this device will be announced.

Foldable flip phone by Motorola

Motorola is expected to announce its first foldable smartphone on November 13, at least from what an official teaser video suggests. It will be a revival of the iconic RAZR line-up which made the fortune of the company in the feature phones age. And, just like the original RAZR series, the new foldable smartphone will have a clamshell form factor. But there will obviously be a difference: the display will be foldable just like the phone. Given that it will be a flip phone, probably you already imagined that it will fold vertically. According to rumors, the Motorola RAZR smartphone will sport a 6.2-inch flexible OLED display with a resolution of 876 x 2142 pixels. The phone will also come with an external display which will allow users to check notifications without unfolding the phone. The foldable display should be notched in order to include a front camera for selfies. Despite its foldable design, the Motorola RAZR is not expected to be a flagship: instead, it should be a mid-ranger equipped with a Snapdragon 710 chipset paired with 4 or 6 GB of RAM and 64 or 128 GB of internal storage depending on the chosen configuration.

Foldable laptop by Lenovo

Instead of a smartphone, Lenovo is developing a foldable PC. It is a laptop that folds inwards with a huge 13.3-inch display and, obviously, Microsoft Windows as the operating system. The prototype belongs to the ThinkPad X1 series and Lenovo should launch it in the market in 2020 when it will be completely ready and safe.

World’s first foldable phone by Royole

flexpai

Last but not least, the world’s first foldable phone. A lot of people expected Samsung to release the first foldable device, but Royole beat the Korean giant and announced the FlexPai before the Korean giant. Just like the Huawei Mate X, the Royole FlexPai is another device with a flexible display placed externally which folds outwards. It is available in the global market and it is powered by the Snapdragon 855 chipset. Its display has a 7.8-inch diagonal when unfolded.

Redmi Note 8T live photos confirm NFC is the new addition

The Redmi Note 8T should not exist but it does. Unlike other manufacturers that have adopted the “T” (OnePlus) or even “S” suffix for refreshed models, Redmi’s latest phone doesn’t bring much when compared to its non-T variant. Actually, the only difference is the addition of NFC support. Yes, NFC. That is the only thing that distinguishes the Redmi Note 8 from the Redmi Note 8T.

We have been able to get our hands on live photos of retail units as further proof that the phone exists. Popular leaker, Sudhanshu Ambhore, has also posted live photos of the device which reveal more specs.

The Redmi Note 8T will come in a white box that has a picture of the device in all the available color variants on the front. The name of the phone is written at the bottom as well as on the sides. On the back, the retail box reveals the color of the variant inside is Moonshadow Grey and it has 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

Sudhanshu’s photos are of the blue variant and give us a look at the device itself. The Redmi Note 8T has a 6.3-inch Dot Drop Display with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on both sides. It has 48MP AI quad cameras which include ultra wide-angle and macro lenses.

The sticker on the front of the phone also mentions the phone has a 4000mAh battery with support for 18W fast charge via a USB Type-C port. It also supports multifunctional NFC and is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 AIE processor.

The live photo shows the bottom of the phone is home to an audio jack, a microphone, the USB port, and the speaker grille. The phone will come with a transparent soft case and a white Type-C cable and charger.

The Redmi Note 8T is going to be available in markets outside China. While Xiaomi has not yet revealed which markets will be getting it, we have a few guesses. The Redmi Note 8 should be available in Europe in countries such as Spain and Italy where the Redmi Note 8 isn’t sold. NFC payment is widely used in the aforementioned countries, so it makes sense that Xiaomi will sell the devices there.

The device is already available for pre-order on Giztop for $199 but you can get $20 off with a coupon.

Xiaomi crowdfunds the Dr Bei Water flosser F3

Xiaomi has launched what is its 429th crowdfunding product. The product is the Dr Bei Water flosser F3 and it is on offer for 149 yuan ($21). Dr Bei Water Flosser F3

The Dr Bei Water Flosser F3 looks like a small water gun with pressure high enough to dislodge stubborn plaque stuck between the interdental spaces. The device has a 180ml water tank and equally comes with three different water pressure modes. The water flosser also has a working frequency of 60DB which isn’t too loud. Further, it packs a powerful battery that can last up to 30 days on a single charge.

Dr Bei Water flosser F3
The water flosser comes with a single rotatable nozzle which is also detachable. The nozzle has an opening with a diameter of 0.6mm making it easy to penetrate the interproximal areas. Apart from dislodging plaque, the pressure also helps to massage the gum and periodontal ligaments. In addition, it is also ideal for use by orthodontics patients using braces or any other orthodontic appliances that makes normal toothbrushing difficult.

Xiaomi Mi Note 10 and Mi Note 10 Pro get NBTC and EEC certification

Xiaomi is backtracking on a statement its top executive made earlier this year and will be launching a new model for the Mi Note series. Actually, scratch that. It is launching not one but two new Mi Note phones. The two phones are the Mi Note 10 and the Mi Note 10 Pro.

Initially, we only knew about the Mi Note 10. Its retail box even leaked over a week ago. However, certification documents from Thailand’s National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) have revealed there will also be a Mi Note 10 Pro. The info was first posted on Twitter by Sudhanshu Ambhore (@Sudhanshu1414).

It was also reported that both phones have also been certified by Russia’s EEC. The Mi Note 10’s model number is revealed as M1910F4G while the Mi Note 10 Pro’s model number is M1910F4S. The specs of both phones are currently unknown, so we can’t say if these are new flagships or premium mid-range devices.

There have been reports the Mi Note 10 will launch by the end of the month but Xiaomi has kept mute on the device’s existence. The company usually schedules its launch events on Tuesdays which means October 29 should be the date of release. But with no official info yet as of today, the Mi Note 10 and Mi Note 10 Pro will probably launch next month.

To fully replenish the built-in battery, it will take 3 hours with 40 hours of playtime. As previously mentioned, it will be available for purchase starting 11 November at a price of Yuan 300.

Google‘s smart home products which include Home speakers and displays often receive software updates but they are installed in the background, therefore, most users tend to not notice them.

In the last couple of weeks, owners of Google home products have been stating on the company’s support forums and Reddit that their devices got bricked allegedly after the recently pushed software update. Google had already acknowledged that an automatic firmware update rolled out in September is indeed its cause. However, this happened last month and the company did mention anything else until now.

google home diwali giftGoogle has recently reached out to 9to5Google to confirm that the company will be replacing all units that were bricked as a result of this update, regardless of if they are covered under warranty. There’s also a fix for that update which is rolling out soon to prevent the issue on other devices.

The official statement issued by the company is listed below:

We are aware that a small number of Google Home and Google Home Mini devices are affected by an issue that causes the device to stop working. We have a fix that will prevent the issue from happening and will be rolling it out soon. We are replacing affected devices

Blackview BV9800 Pro full specs released: Can it become the top thermal camera rugged phone of 2019 (video)

Earlier this month, Blackview launched its latest rugged flagship on the Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign, BV9800 Pro. In a week, the device (along with the BV9800 standard version) attracted more than 800 backers, raising over $340,000 in funds; nearly 2680% over the expected funding. The amount is impressive and it reveals just how popular the BV9800/BV9800 Pro duo is.

Blackview BV9800 Pro

And it couldn’t be any different as rugged flagships are most of the time under-featured. But the new Blackview models sport a Sony® 48MP camera, hardly found on other rugged phones today. In addition, the BV9800 Pro sports two other cameras, a FLIR® Lepton® thermal imaging camera and a 5MP camera to provide FLIR MSX®, which lets users see and measure heat. This function is useful for outdoor adventures. In addition, the BV9800 has a 120° ultra-wide 16MP camera for the landscape photos and macro shots, and a 5MP depth camera for Bokeh effect.

The key difference between the BV9800 Pro and the BV9800 are the camera features. Both phones come with IP68 /IP69K/MIL-STD-810G certification and they can withstand water, dust, and drops that are very often when working outside or go on outdoor trips. The last category of users would find the GPS, GLONASS, and BeiDou navigation systems support, very handy. Lastly, both come with a 6580mAh battery for long use on a single charge.

Blackview BV9800 Pro
The devices include global LTE support and function and will work globally across time zones and with most international and local wireless carriers.

What’s more, the phones are packed with top of the line components, including a potent MediaTek Helio P70 octa-core SoC backed by 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, allowing them to compete against other, more expensive rugged smartphones.

5G technology is still at its infancy as the service just started rolling out in some countries like China and the US. The next-gen technology is expected to blossom next year. Notwithstanding, we have seen a couple of discussions centred on 6G technology. Vivo has just ignited yet another discussion with its latest patent application.6G

The Chinese smartphone maker recently applied to have a design for its 6G logo registered by the EU Intellectual Property Office. The application was filed on October 22 and it is basically a customization of the characters – 6G. The design saw the 6G characters decorated with four diagonal stripes designed in such a way to depict the supersonic speed of 6G.

6G standard isn’t expected to be completed before 2030 and will bring even faster network speed. The read speed is said to reach 1TB per second with zero latency. At present, Vivo is one of the leading firms in 6G technology research and development, participating in the industry’s B5G / 6G seminar. The company has established many partnerships on cutting-edge 6G technology research with many universities. Apart from Vivo, Chinese tech giant Huawei has also commenced work on 6G, according to a statement by its found Ren Zhengfei.
