The tech giant has sent out invites for a special event which will hold at the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino on Tuesday, September 10 at 10:00 a.m. local time.

Redmi Note 8 Pro vs Xiaomi Mi A3 vs Redmi K20: Specs Comparison

Mid-rangers are Xiaomi’s “core business” and it is not a case if Redmi recently became an independent brand and carried the company’s sales to incredibly high levels. A few hours ago, the most awaited Redmi phone of the year finally made its debut. We are talking about the Redmi Note 8 Pro which was officially announced alongside the vanilla Note 8. But will the new affordable device become a best-seller like its predecessor Redmi Note 7? Does it have the potentialities to beat the concurrence? Before establishing if that is the mid-ranger for you, we think you first have to understand if it is the best option among several “value for money” devices you can find in the Xiaomi’s catalog. That is why we compared it with the latest ones available globally: the Redmi K20 (also known as the Mi 9T outside Asia) and Xiaomi Mi A3 (Mi CC9e in China).

Design

If the design is your priority, then you should not opt for the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro. Both Redmi K20 and Xiaomi Mi A3 are definitely better for both their design and their build quality. While Redmi K20 is the most futuristic due to its notch-less display and its pop-up camera, as well as its psychedelic glass back, the Xiaomi Mi A3 is the most compact and the most lightweight, but it has a classic waterdrop display. Both come with a glass back and an aluminum frame, so both have a premium and flagship-like build quality. Given that I am not a compact phones lover and I like notch-less displays, I prefer the Redmi K20. But if you want a device which is easier to use with one hand and to keep in a pocket there is no challenge: Mi A3 wins.

Display

The Redmi K20 is a clear winner when it comes to display quality. It is the only to sport an AMOLED panel which is Full HD+ resolution and HDR-compliant. So it boasts a better color reproduction and even a satisfying level of detail. Redmi Note 8 Pro is Full HD as well, but it has a lower-end IPS display and it even lacks an in-display fingerprint scanner. Xiaomi Mi A3 has an AMOLED display and a UD fingerprint reader, but it comes with a disappointing HD+ resolution instead of Full HD+. But do not forget that its display is smaller and better for one-handed use.

Specs & Software

According to the specs and the benchmarks, Redmi Note 8 Pro has the highest performance thanks to its stunning MediaTek Helio G90T chipset which was specifically made for gamers and demanding users. But it has a higher energy consumption due to the 12 nm production process. However, there is no much to worry about as the Redmi Note 8 Pro comes with a bigger battery. Redmi Note 8 Pro has the best chipset, but Redmi K20 comes in a better memory configuration with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage, while Redmi Note 8 Pro stops at 8/128 GB. However, that is not a so big deal given that Redmi Note 8 Pro has expandable storage while Redmi K20 does not. Note that Xiaomi Mi A3 runs Android One, while Redmi K20 and Note 8 Pro run MIUI.

Camera

Redmi Note 8 Pro is one of the most interesting mid-range camera phones out there. It is the first phone to be equipped with a 64 MP camera, the highest resolution ever seen on a mobile phone until now. And it even has a quad camera on its rear side, including an ultrawide sensor, a dedicated macro camera, and a depth sensor. Redmi K20 is an amazing camera phone as well, thanks to its high-end 48 MP sensor and its telephoto lens. Xiaomi Mi A3 is inferior when it comes to rear cameras, but it has a better 32 MP selfie camera.

Battery

Redmi Note 8 Pro has the biggest battery, but we believe Xiaomi Mi A3 will last longer on a single charge because it has a more efficient chipset as well as a more efficient display, thanks to its smaller size and its lower resolution.

Price

Xiaomi Mi A3 is priced €220/$245 globally, Redmi K20 costs about €260/$290 and Redmi Note 8 Pro starts from just €180/$200. Overall, if I do not consider the price, despite the Redmi Note 8 Pro has a better chipset, I prefer the Redmi K20 due to its better display and design. But this does not mean it is a better phone than Redmi Note 8 Pro as the Note boasts a bigger battery, more versatile cameras, and even higher performance. With its compact HD display and inferior cameras, Xiaomi Mi A3 represents a valid alternative just for a smaller niche, but it offers Android One and an amazing selfie camera, so it is not a device to discard. Which features do you prefer and which phone would you choose according to them?

Pete Lau explains why the OnePlus TV runs Android TV OS

The launch of the OnePlus TV draws closer and OnePlus is not keeping a tight-lip on details. Today, Pete Lau, posted on the OnePlus forum, an article that focused on the software part of the upcoming smart TV.

AndroidTV_deepdive-Forum.png

The OnePlus TV will run Android TV and not a new operating system made by OnePlus or any of the other operating systems available on smart TVs. But before OnePlus settled for that, there were “several rounds of comparisons” and a “long negotiation process”.

Pete Lau said in the post that the goal is to offer the same fast and smooth experience of OnePlus phones for the OnePlus TV and the only way to achieve that was by adopting Android TV as the platform for their smart TV. Below are the reasons that influenced the decision to go with Android TV:

  • Based on Android. Android TV is the most powerful TV operating system, and offers a ton of great features like the Play Store and Google Assistant.
  • OnePlus TV is our first step to gradually establish a OnePlus IoT ecosystem. In order to do so, we had to choose an operating system that can interact and seamlessly connect with your Android phone. Android TV is the natural choice.
  • Strong strategic partnership with Google. We are able to work alongside Google to optimize the Android TV user experience and offer our users Android TV updates for at least 3 years.

We are pretty excited about the OnePlus TV and we are happy that just like OnePlus phones, the TV will be getting impressive software support too. Do note that while it runs Android TV, OnePlus will include features and optimizations that you will not find on other devices running Android TV.

Some of the OnePlus TV’s specs leaked last week and it revealed the smart TV will be powered by a MediaTek MT5670 processor, have 3GB of RAM, and run Android TV Pie. It will have a 55-inch QLED display but we expect other sizes will also be announced based on the Bluetooth SIG listing.

The OnePlus TV is expected to launch on September 26 in Delhi alongside the OnePlus 7T and OnePlus 7T Pro.

Redmi Note 8 Pro won’t launch in India anytime soon

Xiaomi’s Redmi brand unveiled the Redmi Note 8 Pro today at an event in China which also saw the launch of the Redmi TV. At the sidelines of the launch event, Redmi’s GM Lu Weibing spoke to 91mobiles and among the things revealed is that the Redmi Note 8 Pro and the Redmi Note 8 won’t be launched in India very soon.

While responding to the question of when the Redmi Note 8 Pro India launch will hold, Weibing responded that the brand is indeed working towards an India launch but that will be in 2-3 months time. If we are to speculate, that would be around October or November. Considering the product cycle, this is considered a long time especially as it contrasts with what was obtained with the Redmi Note 7. The model was launched in China in January and by February had already hit the Indian market.

EDITOR’S PICK: Huawei Band 4e Basketball Wizard Edition gets its official launch

More so, Redmi may likely launch another premium mid-range model in January 2020 which will be just a few months after the Redmi Note 8 Pro’s intended launch. However, since the Redmi Note 8 Pro uses a new Helio G90T chipset and packs a refreshing design, those could be strong selling points for the model. It is also not uncommon to see a model delaying up to 2-3 months before rolling out globally especially where issues like inadequate parts inventories are encountered. The Helio G90T mass production may be the reason why the rollout may be delayed. We also expect this delay to extend to the phone’s launch in Europe and other international markets.

Stylus + Plectrum + Touchscreen + Music: We Revisit Nokia’s 5800 XpressMusic in today’s tech throwback

In today’s throwback tech Thursday, we go back to 2008, the year when we saw the launch of the extremely popular Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. For a company that was obsessed with keypad phones, the 5800 XpressMusic came in as a pleasant surprise. It wasn’t the first-ever touch screen phone from the brand but it most likely is its first popular one. The phone was so popular that it sold 8M units in its first year alone! In fact, in India, it broke the record for the most sales by selling 58,000 units sold within three weeks of its launch. Given its popularity, there’s a very good chance that you’ve used the 5800 at some point in your life.

Why was the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic so popular?

First, it was the early days of the iPhone, and touchscreens were slowly gaining popularity. Second, it was a touch screen smartphone from Nokia which was a very popular brand back then.

The phone came from the XpressMusic family and music was a big deal back then (for that matter, even now!). The phone came with a compact design and weighed just 109 grams. There were three colors available: Blue, Black, and Red.

5800 XpressMusic
source: Wikipedia

The biggest highlight of the new device was its sharp 3.2-inch touchscreen panel. You could use your finger, a stylus that neatly slid in its dedicated slot after use, and even a plectrum which the Finnish company added inside the box. Also, the phone was paired with a decent quality headset out of the box. And with a 3.5mm jack, the 5800 XpressMusic was indeed a treat for music lovers from Nokia.

Other specs of the phone include 3G, Wi-Fi, GPS, a 3.2MP Zeiss optics camera with dual-LED flash, BL 2.0 with A2DP, stereo speakers (yay), and MicroUSB 2.0. The 5800 wasn’t exactly a high-end device, but Symbian S60 OS did well in keeping the users interested. What’s great was that the company kept improving its software over time through regular updates.

RELATED: We go Cha Cha Cha with the HTC ChaCha in today’s Throwback Tech Thursday

But 5800 XpressMusic wasn’t without issues

One of the biggest drawbacks of the device was its touch sensitivity. The display on the 5800 featured resistive touch, which meant you had to press really hard to register touches. It was no way near as good as an iPhone phone which featured a capacitive touch screen. As for the OS, Symbian S60 touch was decent but again, it couldn’t compete with iPhone’s UI which was made for touch right from the ground up.

Also, unlike in some markets like India where the pricing was competitive, in the US it was closely priced as the iPhone 3G. It retailed for nearly $400 and at the same price, you could get an iPhone 3G unlocked at that time.

Nevertheless, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is a phone that’ll probably be remembered as the company’s first touchscreen phone used by the masses. It’ll have a special place for people who used it as their first-ever touch screen device!

OnePlus 7T specs revealed: gets a 90Hz 2K display too!

When OnePlus launches the OnePlus 7T later this year, fans may be more pleased with it compared to its predecessor, the OnePlus 7. We already know it will have triple rear cameras but a new leak has revealed there are more exciting features coming.

Ishan Agarwal, the teenage Indian leaker, has revealed the specs of the OnePlus 7T and we are pretty excited already. If you live in India, you should be more excited because the OnePlus 7T duo will arrive first in India on September 26 before the rest of the world.

OnePlus 7T

Renders of the OnePlus 7T already revealed the display design won’t change. So just like the OnePlus 6T, the OnePlus 7T will also have a waterdrop notch. But appearances can be deceiving as the display is very well different. According to the leaker, the OnePlus 7T will come with a 2K Super AMOLED and what’s more, it will have a 90Hz refresh rate just like the OnePlus 7 Pro!!! He adds that the notch is smaller too.

The phone will be powered by the Snapdragon 855 Plus and will be available in two variants both with 8GB of RAM but 128GB or 256GB of storage. The OnePlus 7T will also have a 48MP primary camera paired with 16MP and 12MP secondary cameras.

Unfortunately, there is no mention of the type of lens the secondary cameras have. The front camera is a 16MP sensor and the phone will support 960fps slow-motion recording and also record wide-angle videos (so one of the secondary sensors is an ultrawide angle camera). There will also be Nightscape, most likely a new version with better output.

The leak also reveals the OnePlus 7T will get a slightly bigger battery capacity – 3800mAh as against the OnePlus 7’s 3700mAh battery capacity. The phone will b be available in Frosted Silver and Haze Blue.

Are you excited about the OnePlus 7T? Let us know in the comment box.

First Redmi 5G phone to launch in 2020

A few days ago, Lu Weibing, revealed the Redmi K30 will have 5G support when it launches. There have been speculations that the phone will arrive later this year seeing as the time between successors for Redmi phones is no longer a year. However, an official announcement made today revealed it won’t launch this year.

The announcement was made on Weibo and it states that the Redmi 5G phone will arrive in 2020. Although it doesn’t expressly say the Redmi K30, we can deduce the Redmi K30 will not launch this year since it will have 5G support and no 5G Redmi phone until next year. There is no specific quarter, so we can’t say if it will be early next year or later.

Redmi 5G phone

With the launch of the Redmi K30 5G smartphone, more people will be able to afford a 5G smartphone. HMD Global is also planning to announce an affordable Nokia 5G smartphone next year. It will be interesting to see who launches one first.

The Redmi K30 should arrive alongside the Redmi K30 Pro, and the latter should also have 5G support. However, while the Redmi K30 Pro won’t have an issue with what chipset to use (Snapdragon 865), the Redmi K30 sort of does. There is no mid-range chipset with a 5G modem yet. So we can’t speculate which processor will power it. We do believe Qualcomm (or MediaTek) will announce mid-range processors with 5G modems before the year ends or early next year.

Vivo files trademark for the Vivo Z7 and Z9 moniker

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Vivo recently took the wraps off the Vivo Z5 packing a Snapdragon 712 chipset. The company may drop the Z7 and Z9 sometime in the near future as it has filed for trademarks for both names. Vivo Z7

We can’t say when they will be launched or if both models will be launched at the same time but a trademark application is an indication that Vivo will use the names for successive models. At the moment, nothing is known about the models but a source claims the Z9 may feature a quad-camera setup with the primary sensor likely being a 64MP one. Both models are expected to pack an AMOLED display as well as in-display fingerprint sensors.vivo z9

Since the Z7 and Z9 are likely taking over from the Z5, they are likely to step-up on the features and specs of the Z5 and not go lower. As a reminder, the Z5 sports a 6.38-inch Super AMOLED FHD+ display with a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels and a waterdrop notch at the top. The device also packs an in-display fingerprint scanner. As stated earlier, it is powered by a Snapdragon 712 chipset paired with 6GB/8GB of RAM. The Z5 packs a big 4,500mAh battery and supports 22.5W fast charging as well as reverse charging.

Honor 20S reservations begin ahead of the launch

Honor has today confirmed that it will be announcing the Honor 20S smartphone in China on Sept. 4. The Chinese firm has also started the reservations of the smartphone. The handset seems to be the YAL-AL50 / TL50 Honor phone that was recently approved by TENAA.

The first poster shown below states that the Honor 20S will be available for reservations starting from today. The other poster confirms the Sept. 4 launch date. The handset shown in the hands of the Chinese celebrity is the Honor 20S. The smartphone does not feature a rear-facing fingerprint scanner and it is equipped with a vertical camera module that includes three lenses and an LED flash.

Honor 20S Reservations

The Honor 20S is probably the YAL-AL50 / TL50 phone that had appeared with full specifications and images. The rear image of the YAL-AL50 / TL50 matches with the phone shown in the above poster. The specifications of the phone suggest that it is a lower version of the Honor 20 flagship phone that was announced few months ago.

The only major difference between the Honor 20 and Honor 20S seems to be in the camera department. The Honor 20 has a quad camera system while the Honor 20S has a triple camera setup on the rear. The TENAA listing of the phone has revealed that it is equipped with a 48-megapixel + 8-megapixel + 2-megapixel triple camera setup.

The other specs of the Honor 20S seems to be same as Honor 20. It features a 6.26-inch IPS LCD display with punch-hole design. It supports full HD+ resolution. The 2.6GHz powers the smartphone could be the Kirin 980 chipset. It seems to feature a 3,750mAh battery. The handset may come with up to 8 GB of RAM and up to 256 GB of native storage. For shooting selfies, it has a front camera of 32-megapixel. It is equipped with a side-mounted fingerprint reader. The Honor 20S is expected to come with 20W fast charging technology. The Honor 20 supports 22.5W rapid charging. As of this writing, there is no information on the pricing of the Honor 20S.

Redmi TV with 70-inch 4K HDR display, 2 GB RAM launched for 3,799 Yuan ($531)

As promised, after teasing its launch for a couple of weeks, Redmi has today finally launched its much-anticipated Redmi TV, along with the Redmi Note 8 and Redmi Note 8 Pro smartphones.

The first smart TV from the newly independent Redmi brand is named Redmi TV. It comes with a massive 70-inch 4K HDR display, which the company says it 60 percent larger than the 55-inch panel.

The Redmi TV comes with sixth-generation Picture Quality Engine and is powered by Amlogic quad-core 64-bit processor clocked up to 1.5GHz and Mali-450 MP3 GPU clocked up to 750Mhz. The device comes packed with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage.

As for the connectivity option on the device, the Redmi TV comes with support for Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth 4.2 for lower power consumption. It also has three HDMI ports and two USB ports.

Just like the Xiaomi’s Mi Smart TVs, the new Redmi TV also comes with support for voice assistant and Bluetooth-powered voice-based remote controller. The company is also making use of the PatchWall user interface for this smart TV.

It also comes with Dolby Audio as well as DTS-HD audio. The Redmi TV is priced at 3,799 Yuan in China, which roughly converts to $531. It is now available for pre-booking with a deposit of 100 Yuan (~$14) to 500 Yuan (~$70).

The competition in the Smart TV market is getting intensified. Recently, Honor launched its first Honor Vision TV priced at 3,799 Yuan, but with a 55-inch display and powered by its own HarmonyOS. OnePlus is also all set to launch its OnePlus TV in India next month.

The company is aiming to expand its Redmi brand to a multi-category company and is trying to create its own Redmi ecosystem. Lu Weibing, General Manager of Redmi had earlier said that the company will adhere to its strategy of making cost-effective products, which has been a major force behind the brand’s success.
