Mi Outdoor Bluetooth Speaker gets certified, has Bluetooth 5.0

Xiaomi may announce a new Bluetooth speaker soon according to a recent listing on the Bluetooth SIG website. The listing says the speaker will launch as the Mi Outdoor Bluetooth Speaker.

From the name, it is obvious this is a speaker that can be used outdoors so it should have an IP rating and be at least splash proof. It may also have a rugged design.

Mi Outdoor Bluetooth Speaker

The speaker was listed on the database on July 5, 2019, and the certification says it has Bluetooth 5.0. We don’t think Xiaomi has released any Mi-branded speaker with Bluetooth 5.0, so this might as well be the first.

Xiaomi has a bunch of speakers with varying designs. Some are released under its own Mi brand while others are by the smaller companies under its ecosystem. It even sells Sony, Marshall, and Sonos speakers On its Youpin online store.

Powerbeats Pro: Ultimate Earbuds for Workout

Hands down Powerbeats Pro are best running headphones or workout buds that you can buy. The Powerbeats Pro is set to officially launch on June 8th this year.

POWERBEATS PRO: DESIGN

Check out the Beats Powerbeats Pro from various angles in all 4 colors.

While it seems to bear a striking resemblance to its predecessor at first glance, it neither remained fixed in ears nor did it interact as expected with the spectacles. Powerbeats Pro, on the other hand, does not shift around in the ears, and the over-ear hooks are comfortably placed next to glasses.

In terms of design, the main body of the device looks like a pared down version of the previous Powerbeats.

Powerbeats Pro: Ultimate Earbuds for Workout

The eye-catching “b” logo looks simple. The in-ear design with ear hooks looks still the same but its body has undergone a radical overhaul. The product is now housed in smaller and lighter body. In fact, the official figures claim they are 13% smaller and 17% smaller. Now, that’s what I call a noteworthy change!

The weight reduction isn’t noticeable when you hold it in hand, but it is quite evident once you place it in the ears.

Powerbeats Pro: Ultimate Earbuds for Workout
Powerbeats Pro: Ultimate Earbuds for Workout

Both, the hook of the ear, as well as the cavity have been revamped in a bid to enhance the overall wearing experience.

Let’s take a look at the charging box first. It looks like Beats has invested very little time in designing the box, given how hard it is to open the box with one hand. This can be effortlessly done with the box the Airpods come in.

Powerbeats Pro: Ultimate Earbuds for Workout

Luke Wood, CEO of Beats attributed the bigger size of the box to better endurance performance as it can be plugged into the larger battery.

Powerbeats Pro: Ultimate Earbuds for Workout

Aside from that, the bigger box ensures the memory metal material ear hooks are not damaged due to the squeezing of the box.

This is a well-planned and intentionally done move by the Beats.

Keeping comfort in mind, it is not really recommended that you put the charging box into your pocket especially when you are wearing a pair of jeans or sweatpants.

Powerbeats Pro: Ultimate Earbuds for Workout

The earphone case is not plugged in completely and the weight is actually good. Its weight ensures that it does not fall down your pants, but on the downside, it might prove to be a bit inconvenient to carry in your trouser pocket.

WEARING

Given that your left and right ears aren’t mirror-symmetrical, it is quite hard to differentiate between the good and the bad. Keeping in line with that, even well-received headphone such as AirPods might feel uncomfortable to wear for some people.

Powerbeats Pro: Ultimate Earbuds for Workout

I asked some of my colleagues to try to wear this earphone. Few of them have large ears and some of have small ears. In some ears it fitted well and the ears look fleshier. On the other hand, it looks delicate and a little weaker.

Powerbeats Pro: Ultimate Earbuds for Workout

While the evaluation has various courses, the overall trend remains popular. Additionally, I also analyzed the earphones after wearing them for quite a long time and here’s what I found out:

You cannot discount the fact that the Powerbeats Pro offers a firm wearing experience, and it doesn’t feel like its licking ears. Regrettably, it doesn’t match the comfortability offered by the AirPods, which do not seem to bother you in the ear when you stop playing music. Powerbeats Pro fails to achieve the same level of convenience.

Along with the shape, the material used to make the car hook has been improved. It is relatively comfortable to wear it for 30-60 minutes; however, continually wearing it is likely to cause discomfort as the wearer begins to feel a earhook-induced pressure on the ear. In other words, this headset is recommended to be worn for about two hours tops.

Powerbeats Pro: Ultimate Earbuds for Workout

There is no problem with the unbalance ear pressure because of the air vent design. Before giving it to my colleagues to wear for trying, I intentionally did not tell them the right way to wear it.

Some people tried to open the ear and then put the earphone directly or let the ear hook hang then smash the earphone inside the ear.

There are no prizes for guess that the first reaction from the colleagues was “How can it be so uncomfortable to wear”?

In fact, I was in Hong Kong recently for an experience and one of the Beats staff members showed how to wear it correctly. You can see the correct method of wearing it in the image below. It need to be screwed into the ear rather than been directly plugged in.

This is relatively easier to do, and more importantly, it allows you to put the headset on the right spot. After showing the right way to wear it, my colleague found them more convenient to use. Those planning to get their hands on the earphones need to learn the right way of wearing them.

Powerbeats Pro: Ultimate Earbuds for Workout

Glasses users are advised to take their glasses off before wearing it. This way they can find a lot of improvement in comfort.

Powerbeats Pro: Ultimate Earbuds for Workout

These can be only used as a reference because even if this pair of earphones can fit 10,000+ shaped ear, you may be the first one, especially for the ear that is touch sensitive. I would suggest if you have the conditions, please go to the Apple Store and try it on.

Activities with Earphone

Be it singing, jumping, raping or playing basketball. If you talk about any of these activities two years ago, you may find the earphones to fall easily.

Although, you still have bunch of AirPods on your treasure to prevent the earphones from hanging. The headphone changes back to the wired headphone.

Imagine asking the same question today. I am sure your answer will be completely different. Indeed, it is not easy to lose AirPods but it will never give you a sense of security.

You need to pay attention to it whether the earphones will fall out when you enter a crowded subway. But for Powerbeats Pro, it will not only give you sense of security but also a confidence.

Powerbeats Pro: Ultimate Earbuds for Workout

The confidence will support you to perform bolder and stretched movements during your workouts. The biggest different between AirPods and Powerbeats Pro is the confidence it gives you after wearing.

Having said that, you do not have to worry about it falling off your earphones even when you are running, playing basketball, football or flipping on a trampoline of 360 degrees.

Waterproof Performance

Waterproof performance is another vital feature for a pair of sports headphones. Carrying a waterproof rating of IPX4, the Powerbeats Pro can withstand splashing from various angles. This pair of headphones underwent waterproof experiments that were carried out by the foreign media MacRumors.

Powerbeats Pro: Ultimate Earbuds for Workout

Despite being dunked in water for up to 20 minutes, the results showed that the Powerbeats Pro remained completely unaffected.

It is worth mentioning here that we don’t encourage users to rinse the headphone. This shred of information is for regrettable accidents such as outdoor puddles or when it falls into the toilet. To keep your earphones, clean after an intense workout session, all you need to do is to wipe the sweat with a wet towel.

Powerbeats Pro: Ultimate Earbuds for Workout

Although, it is worth noting that the headphone box isn’t waterproof. Hence, if the headphones are splashed with water, make sure to wait until it fully dry before placing it back into the box otherwise it might cause short circuit.

While the Powerbeats Pro boasts the same wireless benefits as the AirPods, its physical buttons which are placed on both sides retain the classic audio controls just like wired EarPods. For the sake of an instance, you can skip the current track by double-clicking the “b” button on either earphone or play the previous track by triple-clicking the “b” button.

The sound of plus and minus button on the top of the Powerbeats Pro body and the Logo of “b” helps you to play and pause buttons give you water or sweat on your hands. You can flawlessly and efficiently control the music or podcast at the same time.

Powerbeats Pro: Ultimate Earbuds for Workout

The the Powerbeats Pro packs the same H1 chip that powers the AirPod 2. It gives smart in-ear detection, convenient connection with iOS, and better power management. Unlike the previous W1 chip, the newfangled H1 offers “Hey Siri” support.

In my opinion, the use of “Hey Siri” is greater than daily commuting because in sports, you need to put down your smartphone but still need to change the songs, set timers, reply to calls or read unread text messages and “Hey Siri” helps you to do that.

This enables you to stay updated with all sorts of information even when you are lifting the iron.

Powerbeats Pro: Ultimate Earbuds for Workout

Taking about H1, I can recall Weibo fans asking this headset to be made compatible with Andorid phones. If you use Android, all you will lose is iCloud’s ultra-convenient connection and “Hey Siri”. Other features will remain same. But aren’t these two functions the selling point of the product?

Let’s take a gander at the connection stability. If it is a commuter earphone, I would not pay much attention to its connection stability given that mobile phones aren’t going to be high frequency for quite a lot of people; however, it is not the same case for sports headphones. The sports headphones are different as during the sports, you mostly put your mobile phone a side of the court or in the locker room.

As a result, the performance of the connection stability will be tested. We have analyzed both the above scenarios. Without a barrier, the earphone connection range can be around 30 meters and if placed in a locker room then the range reduces to just 15 meters (about half).

Powerbeats Pro: Ultimate Earbuds for Workout

This leads us to ask an important question, what is the best way to use it? Of course, the best way to use it is by downloading the music on Apple Watch with Apple Music and then connect it to the headphones directly.

By adopting this method, no matter where your phone is placed and how far you go from it, you can be rest assured that the music is never interrupted by any connectivity issues.

Battery Life

According to the official data, Powerbeats Pro is capable of offering a music playback time of up to 9 hours without charging the box. Moreover, it delivers up to 24 hours with the charging box.

Much to our delight, in our battery test we found out that the gap is not that big and the earphone can actually last for about 8 hours which is a great achievement in the real wireless earphone.

Powerbeats Pro: Ultimate Earbuds for Workout

This is a significant achievement for a real wireless headset, giving quite an advantage for the earphone.

Compared to the previous version of Beats, Powerbeats Pro sounds very similar to the Beats X. It delivers an overall well-balanced performance in terms of sound quality and has ample resolution, coupled with crystal-clear listening experience.

The Powerbeats Pro did not do low-frequency dive, and the full environment offered an insignificant amount of parcels, while the sound gave an impression of being thin and not full.

The Powerbeats Pro has more outstanding bass performance compared to new AirPods. Powerbeats Pro’s drums are accurate and compact, plus they don’t feel loose in ears. Although, the vocals aren’t exception, but the clarity and the detail reduction performance is quite good. Some can still hear the vocal details as “Squeky Sound” when the singers sing.

Powerbeats Pro: Ultimate Earbuds for Workout

The Powerbeats Pro adopts a clarity-based sound style. The public now prefer this style over the style used by previously released model of “moving times.”

The adaption of the music is much stronger than the former Beats. Moreover, the Powerbeats Pro merge its advantage in low-frequency processing on the clear basis and making the performance of the earphones more personal.

If the AirPods sound like boiled water then the Powerbeats Pro is like Lemonade with soda. Soda water taste different from boiled water but the difference isn’t a significant one.

The quality of the Powerbeats previous generation can be bluntly describe as bad. In his last interview with ifanr, Luke Wood mentioned that they left no stone unturned in order to improve the new Powerbeats.

Powerbeats Pro: Ultimate Earbuds for Workout

In the terms of actual experience, the performance of Powerbeats Pro has really improved, but is not the best. Although, it can be used.

If there is a slight noisy environment on the street, it is still be normal sound with little some noise but if you go to a very noisy environment like a subway then other party will still sound a little more.

Comparison with Hesheng Powerbeats?

Before writing this review, I asked my colleague if we should compare it with the AirPods. It is worth noting that the two headphones are quite different from each other. While one is for daily commuting, the other is designed for sports.

Powerbeats Pro: Ultimate Earbuds for Workout

During the evaluation, we realized that there are quite a few similarities between them.

While we sum up, you will realize that even though this is a Powerbeats Pro review, we have unintentionally taken it and AirPods in design, comfort, stability, waterproof, connection, storage, and sound quality. Even the featured image is made as a comparison.

While the AirPods has a better appearance, offer superior wearing experience and larger storage, the Powerbeats Pro offers a slew of more advantages including waterproof, battery life, and stability.

Earphones have actually been through a long 130 years of development. As part of this development, the functions of the earphones have come a long way and the sound quality is not the only aspect you need to consider before deciding to buy an earphone.

You may not only need an expensive Hi-Fi headset to sit on a sofa and enjoy your favorite music after work but you may also need active noise reduction to counter the external noise in the subway.

Additionally, you may also need a pair that can be worn in rain and is unaffected by wind. When you are tired, you can use the powerful drums to give you the power to keep it up.

Hence, Apple wants to introduce a pair of wireless headphones that are close to AirPods.

Powerbeats Pro: Ultimate Earbuds for Workout

Final Verdict

So which one to choose between these two? I believe the answer is very clear. If you have no needs for sports, no doubt AirPods is better for you.  It would be best to have both of them when you have needs for sports, but if your pocket doesn’t allow you to do so, Powerbeats Pro may cover a wider range.

Meizu 16s Pro seen on Taobao, rocks triple rear cameras

The Meizu 16s is a unique device in a world of notches, pop-up cameras, and punch hole displays. It keeps the bezels but manages to keep them really slim while still fitting in a camera and an earpiece. Unlike its predecessor, the Meizu 16s doesn’t have a Plus variant. However, new reports have revealed we may be getting a Meizu 16s Pro as early as next month.

Listings of the Meizu 16s Pro are said to have been seen on Taobao, one of China’s biggest online stores. The listing even includes a photo of the unreleased device.

Meizu 16s Pro

The Meizu 16s Pro will mostly keep the design of the Meizu 16s but it will add an extra camera on the back for a triple camera setup. We speculate the third camera may be an ultra-wide angle lens. The cameras are lined up vertically on the left side of the phone with the ring-style LED flash sitting below.

There is no fingerprint scanner on the rear which means Meizu is sticking to an in-display fingerprint sensor again. Unfortunately, the specs were not listed save for the processor which is the Snapdragon 855.

The listing says pre-order began on July 3 ahead of the device’s release in August. More details are expected to surface in the coming weeks leading to its release if the device’s existence is confirmed.

Xiaomi Mi CC9 Meitu vs Oppo Reno vs Honor 20: Specs Comparison

After publishing the first comparisons with the new Mi CC series which included Xiaomi Mi CC9 and Mi CC9e, it is time to talk a bit about the Xiaomi Mi CC9 Meitu Custom Edition. A special version of the new line-up released in partnership with Meitu, the luxury phone manufacturer which was recently acquired by Xiaomi. It is the most powerful and expensive variant of the new series, that is why we think it is perfect to compare it with the base variants of the main line-ups from Oppo and Huawei’s sub-brand Honor. We chose Oppo Reno and Honor 20 because they are among the most important devices on a similar price range and they might become the main rivals of the new Mi CC9 Meitu Edition. But let’s discover who is the best together.

Design

Which design you should choose? It really depends on your tastes, in each case you get impressive premium aesthetics. The Xiaomi Mi CC9 Meitu Edition has a stunning glass back which creates different effects depending on the reflection, but it comes with a notched display. Honor 20 and Oppo Reno’s back covers are less impressive (according to my tastes), but they do not feature a notch and they come with much more interesting solutions. While the former has a shark fin pop-up camera, no bezels, and no display interruption, the latter comes with a punch-hole display. Note that Honor 20 is also the most compact and the most lightweight.

Display

On the paper, Xiaomi Mi CC9 Meitu Edition seems to come with the best display. It is the only to support the HDR technology, despite it has a less strong Gorilla Glass protection than the Oppo Reno (Gorilla Glass 5 vs 6) and it has a waterdrop notch instead of a true full screen display. Oppo Reno takes the second place with its AMOLED display boasting a high DCI-P3 coverage, while Honor 20 does not convince me with its midrange-class IPS panel.

Specs & Software

There is no challenge here: while Xiaomi Mi CC9 and Oppo Reno are powered by a midrange chipset, Honor 20 has the best Huawei’s flagship SoC. We are talking about the Kirin 980 which is a lot faster and smoother than the Snapdragon 710 by Qualcomm. Honor 20 does not have a variant with 8 GB of RAM, but the superiority of its SoC wins everything. Right after, there is the Xiaomi Mi CC9 Meitu Edition with its 8/256 GB memory configuration and expandable internal storage through a micro SD slot.

Camera

It is hard to pick the best camera phone of this trio. Xiaomi Mi CC9 has an amazing triple camera on its back which includes an ultrawide sensor too, and it can record super slow motion videos up to 960 fps. There is also an amazing 32 MP camera which supports the awesome camera algorithms developed by Meitu. These algorithms are able to enhance selfie quality by relying on AI for beautification and more. They are the main reason why Xiaomi acquired Meitu. But for now (at least until we personally test the Mi CC9) it is a draw with the Honor 20 as it also comes with a pretty amazing setup: a quad camera including a 16 MP ultrawide lens and a dedicated macro camera.

Battery

Xiaomi Mi CC9 Meitu Edition is equipped with a big 4030 mAh battery and it will probably last a lot more than its opponents on a single charge, in most of the scenarios. It even features an efficient AMOLED display, unlike the Honor 20. But until we tested it thoroughly, we cannot confirm our opinions about Xiaomi Mi CC9’s battery life in a definitive way.

Price

Xiaomi Mi CC9 Meitu Custom Edition debuted with a $378/€425 price tag in China, while Oppo Reno and Honor 20 start from €500/$560 worldwide. Due to its amazing camera performance, wider display than the Honor 20, bigger battery, a better display, and more internal storage, I prefer the Xiaomi Mi CC9 Meitu Edition. But for people who want the highest performance, Honor 20 is the best.

Alleged specs of Xperia 20 leaks, powered by Snapdragon 710

The Xperia 10 is less than six months old but just three months after its launch, news of a successor surfaced in terms of renders. Now, specifications of the device believed to launch as the Xperia 20 have surfaced.

The Sony Xperia 20 will have a 6-inch FHD+ display with a 21:9 aspect ratio. The renders have shown that the design is near identical to that of its predecessor. So there is no notch of any kind nor is there a punch hole, but you do get some pretty thick bezels.

The Xperia 20 will get a significant boost in processing performance as it swaps the Snapdragon 630 of the Xperia 10 for a Snapdragon 710 processor. The SoC will be paired with 4GB or 6GB of RAM and 64GB or 128GB of storage.

Xperia 20 specs

According to the source, Sumahoinfo, the Xperia 20 will have two 12MP cameras on its rear. However, we do not know what type of lens the secondary camera will be. It will be nice if it is a super-wide angle camera which will replace the depth sensor of the Xperia 10. The front-facing camera is unknown but we are not expecting a big upgrade in that department.

Xiaomi recalling Mi Electric Scooter (M365) over safety issue

Xiaomi has issued a recall notice for select units (actually a lot of units) of its Mi Electric Scooter (M365). The affected units are said to be affected by a safety issue that can cause the vertical component to break from the main body of the scooter when in use. The culprit is actually a screw in the folding mechanism that can come loose.

Xiaomi Mi Electric Scooter (M365)

In the official statement, Xiaomi says the scooters affected were manufactured between October 27, 2018, and December 5, 2018, and total 10,257 units. Of this figure, 7406 units are located in the UK. Below are the other units spread across different countries:

  • Germany – 613

  • Ireland – 443
  • Denmark – 258
  • Kazakhstan – 200
  • Maynmar -175
  • Colombia – 97

  • Belgium – 17
  • Portugal – 16
  • Singapore – 14
  • Russia and Thailand – 1 each
  • Unidentified – 169

The figures may not be entirely accurate as it is possible some units may have been imported from one region to another.

The affected serial numbers fall between 21074/00000316 – 21074/00015107 and 16133/00541209 – 16133/00544518. You can find out if your scooter is affected by entering the serial number on this page. The serial number is located on the left side of the scooter. Once your scooter is said to be affected, you will be required to enter your email address and a mail will be sent to you (within 72 hours) regarding how the repair will be carried out. Owners will not have to pay any charge. Recalls already started on June 26 in the UK and on July 1 in other countries.

Xiaomi says it advises users to immediately stop using the Mi Electric Scooter for now until they are sure their unit isn’t part of the affected ones. Owners are also advised to not try to repair the scooter themselves when they notice a screw coming loose. Modified scooters are also not a part of the recall program.

In the official statement, Xiaomi tendered its apology to those who are affected by the issue.

Galaxy A80 gets a BLΛƆKPIИK edition, Galaxy Earbuds and Watch Active too

Special or limited edition smartphones have become a trend among smartphone manufacturers. A limited edition smartphone may be tied to a superhero, a movie franchise, or in some cases, pop-music groups just like the new Galaxy A80 BLΛƆKPIИK Edition.

Galaxy A80 BLΛƆKPIИK

BLΛƆKPIИK is a Korean-pop girl group and they are also Samsung’s brand ambassadors for the Galaxy A series. The Galaxy A80 BLΛƆKPIИK Editon not only comes in a custom retail box along with custom and special accessories, but the phone itself also has a special paint job.

Just like the name of the group, the phone is a mix of black and pink, mostly black with pink highlights, and the group’s name printed on the rear. The camera has a pink accent and the frame and buttons are also pink. There is also a BLΛƆKPIИK custom theme on the phone.

[envira-gallery id=”262812″]

Inside the box is a custom case with a strap, a 15W custom charging dock, and a set of BLΛƆKPIИK photocards.

Galaxy A80 BlackPink

In some countries, like Thailand, you don’t get a customized phone but the official page says when you pre-order between now and July 14, you either get a free pair of AKG Y500 headphones or the BLΛƆKPIИK accessories. There is no way to choose which you want but when we tried it, it automatically selected a standard edition with the headphones as the free gift. The custom edition will also be available in Vietnam.

We have also seen a custom BLΛƆKPIИK Galaxy Buds and BLΛƆKPIИK Galaxy Watch Active. These are also reported to be available in some markets.

The Samsung Galaxy A80 has a 6.7-inch FHD+ display with no notch or punch hole. The screen covers nearly the entire front and is surrounded by really slim bezels. It doesn’t even have a traditional earpiece but uses sound-on-display technology. It also has an in-display fingerprint scanner. There is a Snapdragon 730 processor under the hood with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of non-expandable storage.

The highlight of the phone is its triple rear cameras (48MP + 8MP + ToF camera) that slide upwards and then rotates to double as the front-facing cameras. The Galaxy A80 has a 3700mAh battery, supports 25W fast charge, has NFC and Bluetooth 5.0 but ditches the audio jack.

Specs and photos of Nokia TA-1198 surfaces: sports circular camera housing

HMD Global may soon announce a new Nokia smartphone. Live photos, as well as specs of the phone which has model number TA-1198, surfaced on the web this week. While you may not be pleased with the choice of the processor inside the phone; the design, particularly the rear, is quite different.

The Nokia TA-1198 has a waterdrop notch, not a first for HMD Global, but slightly different from that of the Nokia 4.2. Even with the notch design, the phone’s bezels are a bit thick. The specs put it in the mid-range category, so HMD isn’t gunning for appearance per se.

[envira-gallery id=”262753″]

The rear is where the excitement is. The Nokia TA-1198 has triple rear cameras. However, rather than stack them up vertically like on the Nokia X71, they are arranged in a circular housing similar to that of the Moto Z series. The three sensors share the housing with the LED flash. Below the setup is a fingerprint scanner.

Coming to the specs, the Nokia TA-1198 runs Android 9 Pie as seen in one of the photos and has June’s security patch installed. A system info app, DevCheck, running on the phone reveals there is a Snapdragon 660 processor under the hood. When the phone launches, it will be HMD Global’s third Snapdragon 660 smartphone after the Nokia 7 Plus and Nokia X71.

[envira-gallery id=”262752″]

The app reveals the phone has a 2340 x 1080 resolution and 410 ppi. It also packs a 3500mAh battery. In another photo, we see the phone can take 48MP photos which means one of the triple rear cameras is a 48MP sensor. The phone has its power button and SIM tray on the right side. There is no photo of the left but that’s definitely where the volume rocker is.

If we were to take a guess regarding the official name of this phone, it will be the Nokia 6.2. The Nokia 6.1 (Nokia 6 2018) has a Snapdragon 630 processor while the Nokia 6.1 Plus (Nokia X6) is powered by a Snapdragon 636 chipset. It won’t be unusual if the next-gen model gets the Snapdragon 660 processor.

The Nokia TA-1198 will most likely launch first in China before making its way to other markets. However, whenever that will be, remains unknown.

Ren Zhengfei claims HongMeng OS is faster than Android and MacOS

Although last weekend Donald Trump announced that Huawei could continue doing business with North American companies and that Google would most likely allow Huawei to use Android and certify their phones, the Chinese company will not ignore the development of HongMeng OS. The statement comes directly from CEO and founder, Ren Zhengfei.

We’ve heard so much news about HongMeng OS, that it’s ludicrous how we’ve yet to see any clear leaks of it. In an interview from the French magazine Le Point, the 75-year-old executive said that the in-house operating system would work on network switches, routers, data centers, as well as smartphones. In that sense, it’s quite similar to Google’s Fuchsia OS.

Speed wise, Ren claims that the operating system Ren also said that the OS is possibly faster than Google’s Android OS. He also makes the same statement regarding MacOS, which makes sense considering HongMeng will also appear on laptops and computers. According to Ren, HongMeng OS has a processing delay of fewer than five milliseconds.

Of course, none of this is really anything too new. We’ve already heard that HongMeng OS is plenty fast, and we also already knew that it would be on many different types of devices. What we really want to know is when we’re going to see it. We expect some sort of announcement to be made at Huawei’s Developer Conference, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Honor CEO teases Honor Band 5 on Weibo

Honor‘s been hard at work making the latest version of their Mi Band competitor, the Honor Band 5. Company CEO Zhao Ming has even gone to Weibo to show off the new wearable, giving us a pretty good look at its design. He even mentions a bunch of the new features coming on the little gadget. So, let’s take a closer look at the Honor Band 5.

First off, let’s take a look at what’s new in the Honor Band 5’s design. Well, we’d like too, but it’s a very simple design, and there’s not too much different here next to the old Honor Band 4. We’ve still got the same circle button here too. Overall, it seems to be very similar to the old Honor Band 4, though the features are where all the new stuff is.

Zhao Ming teases a whole slew of new features for the Honor Band 5. According to him, the wearable can monitor your blood oxygen levels, detect fatigue and listlessness, record poor sleep and even detect hypoxemia dizziness. Along with that, we’ve also got all the standard health band features like heart rate monitoring and the like.

The company launched the Honor Band 4 last year along with the Honor 8X. There was even a Honor Band 4 Running Edition, which was exactly the same device, just with more fitness band features. Considering how we’re expecting the Honor 9X pretty soon, we can also probably expect to see the Honor Band 5 launch alongside it just like before.

Swiftkey Puppet offers AR-powered emojis to all its Android users

SwiftKey, a keyboard app which is now owned by Microsoft, has introduced a new animated emoji feature directly into its mobile keyboard app that uses the artificial intelligence (AI) technology to replicate a person’s detailed facial expressions inside a 3D animal character.

The feature is called Swiftkey Puppet and is similar to Animoji on iOS or Samsung‘s AR Emoji. Users can record themselves as a dinosaur, cat, owl, dog, or panda and have their phone’s camera track their face so the app can animate their facial movements.

Swiftkey Puppets

In order to create this feature, SwiftKey says that it tapped thousands of images and videos from volunteers to train a deep neural network capable of identifying each person’s expressions and movements in real time.

Since the Swiftkey Puppet is embedded in the keyboard app itself, it works with just about any app, though the ease of use varies. For instance, sending a video through Slack, Facebook Messenger, and Telegram requires you to select the recipient again even if you’re already in a message thread with them.

As per some user reports, the Puppets feature is still very rough as it doesn’t track mouth movements very well and sometimes it seems out of sync. Currently, the feature is in beta, so this will likely improve over time.

Microsoft had acquired SwiftKey for around $250 million more than three years ago, and since then, the company has brought a number of new features to the app, including in-keyboard web search. The keyboard is notable for its extensibility, with users able to customize and add features — including GIFs, new theme options, translations, and a clipboard — to the keyboard’s top menu bar.
