Huawei recorded the largest growth in Europe, the Middle East and Africa in Q1 2019-IDC

IDC’s latest report bothering on smartphone shipment in Europe, the Middle East and Africa shows that an estimated 83.7 million units were shipped during the first quarter of this year. The shipping estimate represents a 3.3% year-on-year decrease when compared to the same period last year.huawei

The data also shows that the major players raked in an estimated $26.8 million in revenue for the sales but this is less than what was obtained during the same period last year. The estimate is 10% lower than what was obtained in Q1 2018.

Despite its battle with the government, the data shows that Huawei recorded the largest growth in the region with a 66.1% YoY increase in shipments. Fellow Chinese OEM Xiaomi followed with 33.3% YoY growth in shipment. Apart from the two companies that recorded a year-on-year increase in shipments, all other major brands recorded slumps in their shipments. HMD’s Nokia shipments fell by 32.6% YoY while Apple lost 22.73%.

In terms of gross shipments, Samsung remains the market leader in the regions with a 29.5% market share, followed closely by Huawei with a 25.4% market share. Apple came in at third place with a 14.7% market share. IDC notes that Apple’s Q1 2019 result was the company’s lowest in five years.  Since the US giant isn’t expected to release a new smartphone until the third quarter, we don’t expect an improved result in Q2. Apple’s reduced market share is traceable to poor performance in former strongholds like China where local OEMs have risen with sleek but cheaper models, threatening not just Apple but Samsung.

Overall shipments fell short of previous figures as consumers hold on to devices for longer. The average price of phones also dropped as OEMs look to attract more customers. However, IDC predicts a grim future for the market due to heightened geopolitical tensions and the habit of consumers holding onto devices for longer periods.

Samsung patents phone with a 4-sided curved display

Samsung already makes phones with curved displays but it has always been limited to just two sides. A publicized patent filed in November 2018 at the World Intellectual Property Organization shows the Korean phone manufacturer may want to make one with all the sides curved including the top and bottom.

Does the design sound familiar? Yes, the Honor Magic from 2016 also has all its sides curved but Samsung’s is a bit different. The major difference is the size of the bezels. Unlike the Honor Magic which has thick bezels at the top and bottom, Samsung’s phone keeps them to a minimum for a practically all-screen design.

Samsung phone with 4-sided curved display patent

Another difference is that Samsung hides the sensors and front-facing camera under the display. Since the display is curved and laying the camera flat will result in distorted images, the patent says the sensor is placed at an angle. There isn’t a fingerprint scanner on the back or sides which means it is also under the screen. The patent diagram shows the phone has dual rear cameras and a single button on the side.

[envira-gallery id=”258946″]

LetsGoDigital has made 3D renders of the device to give us an idea what the phone may look like. Looking at the images, all we can say is it sure is going to be a really slippery phone although the patent says the curves will provide a firmer grip. The patent says the back which is also curved on all sides can be made of metal but knowing Samsung, Glass will probably be the material of choice.

We have no info if this will ever be released as a commercial device and even if it is, it sure will be different from what the images show as everyday usage will be considered during the design. Nevertheless, we sure will love to see a working prototype at least.

The Galaxy J7 Pro and the Galaxy J7 (2017) are nearly identical devices save for differences in storage capacity but the former already began receiving the update last week.

The update is already rolling out for the J7 Pro in Algeria, Mexico, Russia, and Spain. It is 1GB in size and comes with the new One UI interface and May’s security patch. The firmware version is said to be J730FXXU4CSF1.

For the Galaxy J7 (2017), the update comes as version J730FXXU4CSF1. It is rolling out in Spain already and also has May’s security patch too. Some of the One UI features include Night Mode, navigation gestures, and a re-arranged menu for one-hand use. It also comes with Digital Wellbeing.

The Galaxy J7 Nxt’s firmware version gets updated to J701FXXU6CSF1 with the new update. It also comes with May’s security patch and a new user interface. The update is already rolling out in Thailand but owners of the phone in other regions can go to Software Update under Settings to check if the update is available for them.

All three phones launched with Android Nougat back in 2017. It is nice to see Samsung’s attitude to updates has improved. This will most likely be the last major OS update for all three phones but we are not sure about security updates.

Huawei Nova 5 and Nova 5 Pro case render leak reveals phone’s design

Even though Huawei is going through the worst time in the company’s history with the U.S. ban, the company is backing off from launching new devices. Huawei has confirmed that it will be launching Nova 5 series smartphones on 21st June in China.

Now, ahead of the launch, render of the protective case of the Nova 5 has leaked online, which reveals that the smartphone will feature a waterdrop notch on top of the display. It also suggests that the phone will have an in-display fingerprint sensor given that there’s no cut-out for the traditional fingerprint sensor.

Huawei Nova 5 Case Render

The leak also shows that the phone will come with four camera sensors arranged vertically on the back panel, along with an LED flash. The camera module on the phone is placed in the top-left corner.

Earlier, tempered glass for the Huawei Nova 5 had leaked online, which also revealed that the phone will have a waterdrop notch in the center of the display. It also hints at minimal bezels surrounding the display.

Along with this, a case render of the Huawei Nova 5 Pro shows its back panel. This confirms the quad camera setup for an enhanced camera experience. There’s also no rear-mounted fingerprint sensor and is likely to house an in-display fingerprint sensor.

Huawei Nova 5 Pro Case Render

As for the specifications, the Nova 5 is expected to come powered by the company’s own Kirin 810 octa-core chipset while the Nova 5 Pro is said to be powered by the Kirin 980 flagship chipset. The Nova 5i, on the other hand, is expected to come powered by Kirin 710 octa-core processor. The Huawei P20 Lite (2019), which was recently launched in Europe, is expected to come as Huawei Nova 5i.

Along with the Nova series smartphones, the Chinese smartphone maker is also going to launch the Huawei M6 tablet at the launch event. To know the pricing and availability details of all these devices, we’ll have to wait until the official launch event in China that will take place on 21st June.

China’s Changxin set to produce first locally designed DRAM chip

Changxin Memory Technologies, previously known as Innotron Memory, and previously to that known as either Hefei Chang Xin or Heifei Rui-li IC Manufacturing, is said to be targeting 10k wpm DRAM production by the end of the year. Changxin will compete against chips giants Micron Technology and Samsung Electronics in a $1 billion per year market.

The Chinese company is taking steps to minimize its use of US technology thereby propels them to redesign its dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips. The company is taking measures to avoid infringing patents and potentially falling victim to the U.S. pressures on China’s rising tech industry.

While Changxin is determined in reducing their reliance on US technology, much of its production still reply on U.S. equipment and tool suppliers. By redesign its DRAM chips, the company is hoping that they will be safe against potential U.S. allegations of intellectual property theft.

While the output will still be small compared with the 1.3 million DRAM wafers a month currently produced globally, the start of production would still mark a major breakthrough for China as the country currently has no homemade DRAM chips, said Sean Yang, an analyst at market research company CINNO.

However, much like the world’s leading semiconductor manufacturers, Changxin still needs to use U.S. equipment from companies like Applied Materials, Lam Research, KLA-Tencor, materials from Dow Chemical and electronic design automation tool providers from Cadence and Synopsys. Redmi Note 7 Pro gets first price cut in China for 618 day

In a surprise announcement, Xiaomi has announced that the Redmi Note 7 Pro is getting a price cut in China. In conjunction with 618 day, the Redmi Note 7 Pro’s price will get cut down to a mere 1399 yuan, or about $202. This is the first time we’ve seen the Redmi Note 7 get a discounted price since its launch, but it’s clearly not going to be permanent change.

The phone comes with a 2.5D curved glass on the front as well as back, which is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on both the sides, protecting it from minor scratches. Under the hood, the device is powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 octa-core chipset which is manufactured using the 11nm FinFET process. As for the memory configuration, the smartphone comes with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.

For the camera department, the Redmi Note 7 Pro features a dual camera setup with Sony’s 48-megapixel IMX586 sensor and a 5-megapixel depth sensor, while the selfie camera is 13-megapixels. The Redmi Note 7 features only a 12-megapixel + 2-megapixel dual rear camera setup, however still has the 13-megapixel selfie camera of the Pro.

For those of you in China, this may be your only chance to get discounted Redmi Note 7 Pro for a long time. The device is still selling incredibly well everywhere, so there’s a high chance we won’t be seeing another sale anytime soon. I’d recommend bucking up and snatching a unit before they’re all gone and the chance passes. Until then, stay around on Gizmochina.com for more Xiaomi news.

Huawei ban will hurt UK’s mobile connectivity leadership and trade

United Kingdom mobile operators plan to warn the British government that a ban on Chinese telecommunications company Huawei would jeopardize the UK’s role as a leader in mobile connectivity. Several operators reportedly plan to send a letter to Cabinet Secretary Mark Sedwill asking the government to urgently clarify whether it intends to allow Huawei to bid for 5G contracts in Britain, according to the BBC

On top of this, China’s ambassador to London also warned the British government that if Huawei is blocked from developing 5G networks then it will hurt Chinese trade and investment relationship with the United Kingdom. “It will send a very bad message not only to Huawei but also to Chinese businesses,” Ambassador Liu Xiaoming told the BBC. He added blocking Huawei would lead to “bad effects not only on trade but also on investment.”

What’s been done to improve the Huawei situation?

Britain’s National Security Council, chaired by Prime Minister Theresa May, met to discuss Huawei in April and a decision was made to block Huawei from all core parts of the 5G network but to give it restricted access to non-core parts.

A final decision by the British cabinet of senior ministers was due to have happened in recent weeks but May’s pledge to step down as prime minister has stalled the process, sources said. She is expected to be out of office by the end of July.

Until then, all we can really do is wait for an ultimatum. The company insists that it poses no security threat to any of its customers. Huawei says suggestions to the contrary are a smokescreen for frustrating China’s attempts to emerge as a leading designer and provider of high tech equipment, rather than assembling the nuts and bolts of technology designed in the US and Europe.

Huawei seeks trademark for Hongmeng OS in Peru

Huawei has received temporary relief from the US ban for 90 days which is set to expire in August. In case the ban on the company isn’t lifted by then, Huawei is getting prepared with its backup plan.

Huawei Technologies Co Ltd has applied for the trademark of its “Hongmeng” mobile operating system with the Peruvian authorities. As we recently reported, the company is expected to launch the Hongmeng OS in October this year.

Huawei

Peru’s anti-trust agency Indecopi has said that Huawei filed the trademark request on May 27, days after the United States put Huawei on a blacklist that barred it from business with global tech companies, including Google. This also bars Huawei from using the Android operating system on its devices.

As per local newspaper Diario Correo, there are some 5.5 million users of Huawei cellphones in Peru, a country of 32 million people. Earlier, the company had confirmed that it was working on a back-up operating system in case Huawei was cut off from U.S.-made technology and software.

Indecopi has said that it needs additional information from Huawei before it could register a trademark for Hongmeng. However, it has refrained from providing any more details on the documents it said it had requested from Huawei. But it informed that the company has been given up to nine months to respond.

According to the reports, when the Hongmeng OS gets released, it won’t be having an application ecosystem to fulfill the needs of a high-end user and thus, Huawei is expected to focus on the budget smartphone segment with its own OS in the initial stages.

Outside China, Huawei is expected to ship its Hongmeng mobile operating system to Central and Eastern Europe as well as emerging countries. Europe is one of the major markets for the company and it has been putting efforts to develop an app ecosystem of its own for the European market.

Huawei wants Verizon to pay $1 billion for compensation

Huawei slapped a $1 billion compensation claim on US operator Verizon covering licensing fees for more than 230 of its patents. The Chinese vendor issued its claim in February, asking Verizon to cough up to “solve the patent licensing issue” which relates to core and wireless network gear, along with IoT equipment according to a report from the Wall Street Journal.

Verizon doesn’t directly use Huawei equipment, but reportedly depends on 20 vendors that use Huawei technologies, and the Chinese company’s patent claim in this regard covers properties like network devices and wireless technology. According to sources that The New York Times talked to, on the condition of anonymity, the patent claims made by Huawei would amount to over $1 billion in total.

Representatives for Huawei and Verizon met last week in New York to discuss some of the patents at issue. A Verizon spokesperson told the New York Times that the company had no comment on the matter, but added that “these issues are larger than just Verizon.” He also added, “Given the broader geopolitical context, any issue involving Huawei has implications for our entire industry and also raise national and international concerns.”

The United States last month put Huawei on a blacklist that barred it from doing business with U.S. companies on security grounds without government approval, prompting some global tech firms to cut ties with the world’s largest telecoms equipment maker. This has put a huge strain on the company, though they’ve been slowly recovering ground as of late.

The Faraday Future FF91 is finally ready for mass production

For those of you electric car enthusiasts, the name Faraday Future FF91 should be somewhat familiar. The company’s impressive electric car has seen tons of setbacks and challenges on its way to completion. Many people have even questioned whether we’d ever see the vehicle ship out to customers. Well, according to a Weibo post from the company, the car we’ve all been waiting may finally be here.

Faraday Future originally planned to launch its first fully electric vehicle in 2017, with the possibility of producing a larger range of vehicles over time. The company has implied plans to explore other aspects of the automotive and technology industries, such as experiential ownership and usage models, in-vehicle content, and autonomous driving.

Unfortunately, the company has struggled immensely with staying afloat. In 2017 they lost a number of their key executives, including their former chief designer Richard Kim. Last year we heard that the company’s financial troubles were resolved thanks to an emergency relief from the Hong Kong International Arbitration Center against Evergrande.

Thankfully, things are finally stabilizing for the company. They recently received $600 million of investment from The9, a mobile gaming a company, and the FF91 is finally reaching it’s final stages of production. We look forward to seeing how all this turns out, as it’s been a pretty interesting saga for the startup. Until the Faraday Future FF91 launches however, stay tuned on Gizmochina for all your Chinese tech news.

Samsung Galaxy A10e goes official for $179 in the U.S.

On Tuesday, Samsung announced three new Galaxy A-series smartphones in the U.S. such as Galaxy A50, Galaxy A20 and Galaxy A10e. While the A50 and A20 smartphones have already gone official in other markets, the A10e phone has been announced for the first market time in the U.S. The South Korean company has not shared the detailed specs of the Galaxy A10e smartphone yet. However, it has confirmed that the phone will be priced at $179.

The Galaxy A50 and Galaxy A20 smartphones have been respectively introduced in the U.S. with respective price tags of $349 and $249. The availability of the Galaxy A20 and Galaxy A10e smartphones will be declared later by the company. The sales of the Galaxy A50 will kick off in the U.S starting from today through Verizon Wireless. Later this summer, it will be made available through other wireless carriers in the U.S.

Through a press release, Samsung has confirmed that the Galaxy A10e features a 5.83-inch Infinity-V display. The rear side of the phone houses a camera of 8-megapixel. The native storage of the smartphone is 32 GB and it is equipped with a 3,000mAh battery. The rest of the specs of the phone are currently under the wraps. The Galaxy A10e is a toned-down version of the affordable Galaxy A10 smartphone.

Samsung Galaxy A10
Samsung Galaxy A10

In February, the South Korean company had launched the Galaxy A10 in India. The handset was introduced with a price tag of Rs. 8,490 (~$122). The Galaxy A10 has a 6.2-inch HD+ display with Infinity-V notch and it comes with a bigger battery of 3,400mAh capacity. Also, it is fitted with a better 13-megapixel rear camera. Like the A10e, the A10 phone features 32 GB of inbuilt storage.  The A10 is fitted with a front camera of 5-megapixel.

The Galaxy A10 is fueled by Samsung’s Exynos 7884 chipset. The Geekbench listing of the A10e smartphone that was spotted in the recent past had shown that it will be driven by the same SoC. The A10 smartphone does not feature a fingerprint scanner. Hence, it is likely that the A10e won’t feature it. As far as the design of the phone is concerned, the A10e will largely resemble the A10 smartphone.

Xiaomi starts reducing ad spots in MIUI and is making it easier to disable ads

Xiaomi’s custom user interface — MIUI had received a lot of praise from the users in the past but it is now facing a lot of criticism from users since past several months. The major reason behind that is the company’s strategy to put advertisements in MIUI.

However, the company recently announced that it will be optimizing and monitoring the advertisements on the MIUI platform. This clarified that the ads on MIUI aren’t going anywhere, despite users being furious about it.

Xiaomi MIUI

Xiaomi’s CEO and co-founder had said that the company will remove inappropriate ads and the advertisements that ruin the user experience. General Manager for the Internet Services for Xiaomi also said that the company is planning to reduce the number of advertisements in MIUI.

The company has already started reducing the number of advertising spots and will further reduce the spots in the coming months. It is also introducing an easy switch in the MIUI system tools to disable advertisements. So, in the next couple of months, Xiaomi aims to provide a lighter and fresher MIUI.

Earlier, the company had revealed that it is planning to make use of algorithms which can improve the advertisement reach rate and also make sure that the ad that users see are relevant to their interests.

Recently, the China-based technology company revealed its financial data for the first quarter of 2019. It reported adjusted net profit growth by 22.4 percent year-over-year compared to 2.1 billion yuan (approximately $300 million). It also stated that its total revenue climbed 27.2 percent to 43.8 billion yuan (approximately $6.33 billion).

The biggest source of revenue for the company continues to be the smartphone business.h However, the software and internet services segment of the company accounted for just 9.7 percent of total revenue. This represents a marginal growth compared to 9.1 percent a year before.

Zomato successfully tests its Drone delivery technology in India

Zomato, one of the leading food delivery service provider in India, has announced that it has successfully tested its drone delivery technology. The test was conducted using a hybrid drone and was a part of the company’s attempts to reduce the time taken to make a food delivery to its customers.

The development comes months after the company had acquired drone startup TechEagle to reduce food delivery times and solve other issues like pollution and traffic. Zomato has also revealed that it is forming a consortium as per Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) guidelines to carry out experimental Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) drone operations.

Zomato Drone

Zomato revealed that drone tests were carried out last week at one of the remote sites approved by the DGCA but the company did not reveal the exact location where the drone-delivered the package.

In a statement, Zomato’s Founder and CEO, Deepinder Goyal said:

“We have been working towards building sustainable and safe delivery technology and with our first successful test, food delivery by drones is no longer just a pipe dream. While regulatory hurdles are not trivial, and the government’s concerns need to be looked at from various (valid) points of view, the tech is ready to fly and I am confident that drone delivery will be commonplace sooner rather than later.”

As for the drone used for this testing, it was a hybrid drone with a fusion of rotary wing and fixed wings, carrying a payload of 5 kilograms. It covered the distance of 5 kilometers in 10 minutes with a peak speed of 80kmph. Fully automated, each drone is currently being tested with (remote) pilot supervision to ensure safety, said the company.

According to the notification issued by Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) last month, interested companies need to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to the DGCA for conducting experimental Beyond Visual Line of Sight operations (BVLOS) of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS)/Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS).

Samsung Galaxy Tab S5 with Snapdragon 855 likely to debut in August

Earlier this week, a new Samsung tablet with SM-T865 model number was spotted on Geekbench. The Snapdragon 855 chipset powered device was found to be the upcoming Galaxy Tab S5 tablet. Now, Galaxyclub.nl has shared some vital information on the tablet and has claimed that it may go official at some time in August.

The Geekbench listing of the Galaxy Tab S5 had revealed that it will be fueled by the Snapdragon 855 chipset and 6 GB of RAM. It will come preloaded with Android 9 Pie OS. According to the publication, the Galaxy Tab S5 will be arriving with its own S-Pen stylus.

In February, Samsung had launched a low powered Galaxy Tab S5e. The Snapdragon 670 SoC fueled tablet did not feature an S-Pen stylus. It was made available with a budget-friendly price tag of 399 euros. The Galaxy Tab S4 that was introduced last year had arrived with 699 euros price tag. Hence, it is likely that the Galaxy Tab S5 may also carry a similar price tag. The Tab S4 with model numbers SM-T830 and SM-T835 were made available as its Wi-Fi only and LTE variants. There is a possibility that the Galaxy Tab S5 may also come in Wi-Fi only (SM-T860) and LTE (SM-T865) variants.

Galaxy Tab S5e featured

There is no information available on the other specs and features of the Galaxy Tab S5. The South Korean tech giant had axed the 3.5mm audio jack in the Galaxy Tab S5e to achieve a thinner design. Hence, there is a chance that the upcoming Galaxy Tab S5 may lack a 3.5mm headphone jack. The Android 9 Pie OS on the device could be overlaid with the latest One UI from the company. The Galaxy Tab S4 did not feature a fingerprint scanner and it featured an iris scanner for user authentication. The Galaxy Tab S5 may also lack a fingerprint reader.

Last year, the Galaxy Tab S4 was introduced more or less at the same time as Galaxy Note 9 in August. A recent report had claimed that Samsung may debut the Galaxy Note 10 on Aug. 10. Probably, the Tab S5 may go official around the same time. It may hit the market at the beginning of September.
