Huawei patents a new foldable smartphone design

Earlier this year, during the Mobile World Congress 2019 in Barcelona, Huawei announced its first foldable 5G smartphone — Huawei Mate X. The phone was expected to go on sale later this month, but the launch has been postponed till September to avoid a fate similar to the Samsung Galaxy Fold.

While both Samsung and Huawei have postponed the launch of its first foldable smartphones, the companies aren’t backing down when it comes to the development of foldable smartphones.

We recently learned that Samsung is working on a new smartphone design with the rollable display while Oppo is working on a foldable smartphone having a pop-up front-facing camera sensor. Now, we have learned about Huawei’s new foldable smartphone design thanks to a patent filing, first reported by letsgodigital.

Huawei Foldable Smartphone Patent

The patent shows the phone’s display on the outside which can be folded twice. Also, unlike the current Huawei Mate X design, there’s no sidebar visible. In total, the company has three models with this patent design, as shown in the image below.

It is revealed that the flexible screen of the Huawei phone is held in place by magnets. The folding mechanism looks ingenious where the unit has two hinges attached to the sides of the enclosure.

Huawei Foldable Smartphone Patent

The user will reportedly have the ability to configure the display panels on the device. For example, when all three display sides are opened, the user can configure it to use all three screens for a single layout mode having one large display.

Currently, there’s no information about the phone’s software but it won’t be surprising if the company decides to use its own HongMeng OS in the Chinese market (could be named Ark OS for the international markets) as the company is facing a ban from using Google-backed Android on its devices.

As said, apart from the likes of Samsung and Huawei, several other smartphone manufacturers are working on its own version of the foldable smartphone, including Xiaomi and Oppo. These new smartphones are expected to get announced by the end of this year.

Huawei removes lockscreen ads after user complaints

Last week, many Huawei smartphone users reported that they are seeing advertisements on the phone’s lock screen. The ad is for Booking.com and if the user clicks on it, they are redirected to the travel portal.

The advertisement was reportedly being shown on several smartphone models from the company, including P20, P20 Lite, P20 Pro as well as a couple of Honor devices such as Honor 10 and Honor 20. Users from countries including the UK, Ireland, South Africa, Netherlands, Germany, and Norway complained about the ads.

Huawei

After complaints from the user, the company has now removed advertisements from the lock screen. In a statement, the company said that the ads shouldn’t have been showing up on devices in the first place.

The company noted that choosing to implement this idea was a mistake and acknowledged that it was having a negative effect on people’s experiences with using their devices. It apologized for inconveniencing users and has stated that it is committed to bringing them a user experience that they will enjoy by continuing to improve the services.

Huawei has said that the ads which were showing up for people who had the built-in landscapes set as their lock screen wallpaper option have been removed from the company’s servers. This means that the users shouldn’t be showing back up for anyone else in the future.

It noted that some users may have downloaded some or all of those ad images to their devices. They simply need to delete those images from the phones. If those images happen to pop back up, users need to drag up on the lock screen from the bottom edge. It will show a delete option followed by a confirmation box confirming that the user wants the image to be deleted from the device.

Huawei isn’t the first brand to show ads on its devices. Amazon is also doing the same for the smartphones sold through its Prime Exclusive program. But Amazon clarifies that Prime Exclusive phones, which offers a significant discount on the retail price, will be showing ads and deals on the lock screen.

Another China-based smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi is also showing ads on the devices running MIUI OS. The company has confirmed that the ads are here to stay but is now optimizing the implementation of the advertisements.

Vivo X30, Y19 names trademarked with WIPO

In April, Vivo India had launched the Vivo Y17 mid-range smartphone and in March, the Vivo X27 lineup was made official in China. Fresh information reveals that the company could be now gearing up to launch new X and Y series of smartphones since it has registered X30 and Y19 monikers with World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

Last year, Vivo had launched in the Vivo X21 smartphone in March and it was succeeded by Vivo X23 in September. The successor of X23 was expected to debut as Vivo X25. However, the company decided to skip it and launch its next X-series phone as Vivo X27. Probably, the company may launch its next X-series smartphone in September.

It remains to be seen whether the company will be skipping X28 and X29 monikers to launch it as Vivo X30. There is no information available on the specifications of the Vivo X30. The Vivo X27 series include X27 and X27 Pro phones. Hence, there is a possibility that the company may announce Vivo X30 Pro alongside the X30 model.

The Vivo Y19 name that has been trademarked with WIPO sounds like a successor for the Vivo Y17 that was unveiled in India recently. In the past few months, Vivo has launched Y-series smartphones like Y12, Y15 and Y17 with similar specs with slight differences in their specs. Hence, the upcoming Y19 phone may borrow many of its specs from the Y17 phone.

The Vivo Y17 comes with a 6.35-inch display with waterdrop notch. It carries support for HD+ resolution of 720 x 1544 pixels. The MediaTek Helio P35 chipset powers the Vivo Y17 phone with 4 GB of RAM. It comes with a big internal storage of 128 GB. There is a dedicated storage slot onboard for adding a microSD card.

The Vivo Y17 is one of the cheapest phones in India to feature a triple camera setup. It includes a 13-megapixel primary lens, an 8-megapixel ultrawide lens and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. It is fitted with a front-facing camera of the 20-megapixel. The handset is loaded with FunTouch OS 9 based Android 9 Pie OS. It is packed with a 5,000mAh battery that supports 18W fast charging. It is currently selling with a price tag of Rs. 15,990 (~$228). At launch, it was priced at Rs. 17,990 (~$257). The upcoming Vivo Y19 may land in India with a price tag of Rs. 17,990.

Samsung had launched the Galaxy A30 smartphone earlier this year in three color options — Black, Blue, and Red. Now, the company has introduced the fourth color options — White. Samsung Online Shop has already started selling the Samsung Galaxy A30 White color option in India.

The Samsung Galaxy A30 in White color is priced at Rs. 15,490 in India, which is same as the pricing of the Blue, Black, and Red color options which were launched in India in February this year.

Vivo Z1 Pro live shots appear to reveal entire design

The Vivo Z1 Pro is expected to debut soon in India as an international version of the Vivo Z5x smartphone that was recently launched in China. Compared to the Vivo Z5x, the Z1 Pro will be arriving with some improvements in departments like processor and front-facing camera. Vivo is yet to confirm the launch date of the Vivo Z1 Pro in India. Couple of live shots of the smartphone have been shared by Indian tipster Mukul Sharma today to reveal its entire design.

The Vivo Z1 Pro images show that the rear shell of the phone is fitted with a vertical triple camera setup at its top-left corner. A fingerprint scanner is available on its rear. The back panel of the phone seems to be made out of glass.

The Vivo Z1 Pro will be one of the first mid-range category smartphones to arrive with punch-hole display design. On June 20, Motorola will be launching the Motorola One Vision smartphone in India with the same display design. Coming back to the Z1 Pro, except for its thicker chin, the display is surrounded by slimmer bezels on all three sides.

Vivo India has confirmed many features of the Vivo Z1 Pro smartphone through its official page. It will be arriving as India first phone fueled by the Snapdragon 712 chipset. The Vivo Z5x features the Snapdragon 710. In comparison, the SD712 offers faster clocking speed than the SD710 chip.

The Vivo Z1 Pro will be equipped with a front-facing camera of 32-megapixel. This feature is being dubbed as in-display camera technology. One of the above shown images show that the front camera will also double as face unlock feature on the Z1 Pro.

The Z1 pro will be packed with a huge battery of 5,000mAh capacity and it will carry support for 18W fast charging. However, it is yet to be confirmed whether it will be featuring a microUSB or USB-C port. The bottom edge of the phone features a 3.5mm audio jack, microphones and an external speaker apart from the charging port.

As of this writing, there is no information available on the pricing of the Vivo Z1 Pro smartphone. Probably, the company may make it official by the end of this month.

Realme 4’s retail box shows up in video

In March of this year, Realme announced the Realme 3 smartphone, and it seems a successor is already in development. A video has surfaced online and it shows the retail box of the Realme 4.

The 10-second video was uploaded on YouTube yesterday and in it, we see the phone will come in a black box with “Realme” and “4” written in a gold/yellow font.

There are no specs yet but there is an alleged render of the phone which we have doubts about since it looks like the Realme 2 with just the position of the cameras changed. The source of the image also has no prior tweets save for the photo.

The phone is shown to have dual rear cameras arranged vertically, a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, and the same diamond-back design as the Realme C2.

An alleged render of the Realme 4

The Realme 3 has a 6.22-inch HD+ with a waterdrop notch. It is powered by the Helio P70 (P60 in some markets), has dual rear cameras and packs a 4230mAh battery. We expect its successor should have a more powerful processor, better cameras, and maybe a higher-resolution display.

Nokia 4.2 vs Vivo Y15 vs Realme 3: Specs Comparison

HMD Global is aiming a lot at the entry-level segment of the smartphones market in the last months. The Finnish giant which currently owns the Nokia brand recently launched several budget devices and the most powerful entry-level one is the Nokia 4.2. It mainly focuses on software as it is one of the most affordable devices enabled to the Android One program. In the same price range, there is also the new Vivo Y15 which is mainly focused on battery life, and Realme 3 by Oppo’s sub-brand which has performance and value for money as its strongest point. If you want to know which entry-level should you choose between this amazing trio, go ahead and read this specs comparison.

Design

A compact and lightweight device. This is one of the main advantages of the Nokia 4.2 if we compare it with its rivals in this comparison, as well as most of the budget devices out there. It fits great in a pocket and it is easier to use with one hand than most of the actual phones. Still, some may prefer the Vivo Y15 due to its reflective back and its larger screen.

Display

In each case, you get entry-level panels with similar specifications and the IPS technology. But they are not disappointing displays. Nokia 4.2 has a very small panel, that is great if you need a compact phone and you like one-handed use. The smaller diagonal even allows a higher level of detail due to the higher pixel density. However, I would go for the Vivo Y15 simply because it has a bigger 6.35 panel. My recommendation is not to choose one of these handsets just by looking at the display quality, as there are only marginal differences.

Specs & Software

Three different chipsets for three different levels of performances. Realme 3 wins, there is no doubt. It is faster and smoother thanks to its MediaTek Helio P60, and it even comes in a variant with the even more powerful Helio P70. There is not so much difference between the Helio P22 found on the Vivo Y15 and the Snapdragon 439 found on the Nokia 4.2. But I personally prefer the Nokia 4.2 because it is part of the Android One program, so it provides a smoother and bloatware-free experience as well as faster and more constant updates. Note that Nokia 4.2 is only available with up to 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage, while Vivo Y15 has up to 4 GB RAM and 64 GB of internal storage, so it actually provides better performances in multi-tasking and more space.

Camera

Vivo Y15 has the most complete and versatile camera department, despite it does not necessarily click more detailed photos. But overall, I would go for the Vivo Y15 due to the presence of an ultrawide sensor and an awesome 16 MP front camera for selfies. Realme 3 Pro comes right after as it comes with a better main sensor for the rear camera, but the rest of the setup does not convince me. Nokia 4.2 is the less impressive one.

Battery

Vivo Y15 is equipped with a mammoth 5000 mAh battery which delivers up to three days of battery life even with pretty intensive use. That is simply amazing and one of the best battery phones out there. The second place goes to the Realme 3 with its still awesome 4230 mAh battery.

Price

Nokia 4.2 debuted with a €150/€135 price tag, Vivo Y15 costs €180/$160 and Realme 3 starts from €115/$100. Overall, Realme 3 is my favorite one due to its better performance, big battery, and decent cameras.

Xiaomi to end MIUI Global Beta program in July

If you own a Xiaomi phone, you are either running a beta version or a stable version of MIUI (excluding those running custom ROMs or are on Android One). Most of those who run the former are those who want to test new features and offer feedback before they make it to a stable release. Come next month, that will no longer be possible.

MIUI

A blog post on the Mi Community website has revealed that Xiaomi’s team of engineers will stop releasing a global version of MIUI Beta for all devices beginning July 1, 2019.

Apparently, a lot of people are beginning to use MIUI Beta as more models get announced. However, that is not how Xiaomi wants its users to experience MIUI. Henceforth, the software team wants to focus on stability and frequency of releasing stable version updates.

A lot of users of MIUI have not taken the news well. Several comments on the blog post show disappointment at the decision. Multiple users even say beta versions are more “stable” than the so-called stable versions. However, there are some users that are optimistic about the decision since Xiaomi is promising more frequent stable updates.

One common point is that Xiaomi is releasing too many phones and doesn’t seem to have enough personnel working on global versions of its software hence the reason for the decision.

What do you think about Xiaomi’s decision to stop releasing global beta versions of MIUI? Let us know in the comment box.

Huawei’s Nova 5 series may actually not have three models but four. Chinese mega online store, Jingdong, has listed a fourth one called the Nova 5i Pro which should also launch alongside the Nova 5i, the Nova 5, and the Nova 5 Pro.

We don’t know what the phone looks like as the images used for the listing are of the Huawei Y9 (2019) and the Huawei P20 Pro to serve as placeholders.

The Huawei Nova 5i will come with a punch hole display and quad rear cameras. The pro version may also come with a similar design and the same number of sensors but differ with respect to the camera specs or maybe the chipset inside.

The Nova 5i is said to have a Kirin 710 processor while the Nova 5 and the Nova 5 Pro will come with Kirin 810 and Kirin 980 processors respectively.

Huawei has scheduled June 21 as the day for the launch of the new phones.

Huawei P20 Lite (2019) vs Samsung Galaxy M40 vs Xiaomi Mi 9T: Specs Comparison

Despite the U.S. ban and its huge effects, Huawei did not stop releasing smartphones and it will soon launch the P20 Lite 2019, a revival of the old-gen Lite version of the P20. The handset will belong to the midrange segment and it will have a lot of competitive rivals. Its most important rivals from the best Android smartphones manufacturers released this month are the new Galaxy M40 by Samsung announced a few days ago, and the Xiaomi Mi 9T, that is the global version of the Redmi K20. This comparison will let you discover which of these competitive mid-rangers has the highest value for money in 2019.

Design

Not only flagships: now, even midrange devices come with innovative aesthetics. While Huawei P20 Lite 2019 and Samsung Galaxy M40 rock an awesome punch-hole display with a front camera embedded, the Xiaomi Mi 9T has a pop-up camera design. I would personally go for the Xiaomi Mi 9T because of its more stunning glass back, as well as its under-display fingerprint reader which allows the back cover to be cleaner. Further, the motorized slider allows having narrow bezels and no holes or notches in the display. However, note that the Xiaomi Mi 9T is thicker and also heavier than its two rivals.

Display

Even if we talk about displays, Xiaomi Mi 9T takes the first place in this comparison. While both Huawei P20 Lite 2019 and Samsung Galaxy M20 sport a classic LCD panel, Xiaomi Mi 9T has a wonderful AMOLED display with deeper blacks and vivid colors. It is even HDR compliant, a standard which furtherly improves its color reproduction, especially with multimedia content. And, unlike Samsung Galaxy M40 and Huawei P20 Lite 2019, it is protected by the strong Gorilla Glass 5.

Specs & Software

On the hardware side, it is again a victory for the Xiaomi Mi 9T. Under the hood, the handset sports an amazing Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 chipset. Not the best Qualcomm’s chipset as this device is just a mid-ranger, but it rocks the most incredible Qualcomm’s SoC in the midrange sector with the best midrange GPU. Right behind it, we got the Samsung Galaxy M40 with its Snapdragon 675 which is more or less at the same level as the Snapdragon 710 (worse GPU, better CPU). Huawei P20 Lite 2019 still comes with the old Kirin 710 chipset (comparable to the Snapdragon 660). All of them come with Android 9 Pie out of the box and a customized user interface.

Camera

You may call me a Xiaomi fan, but we tested Xiaomi Mi 9T’s camera and we found it amazing, can not deny it. On the paper, it is way better than the camera departments from both the Galaxy M40 and the Huawei P20 Lite 2019, despite the latter sports a quad camera setup. Xiaomi Mi 9T has a similar setup to the vanilla Mi 9 with a 48 MP Sony main sensor, an ultrawide 13 MP lens and a telephoto sensor with 2x optical zoom.

Battery

Thanks to their big 4000 mAh batteries, Huawei P20 Lite 2019 and Xiaomi Mi 9T will most likely provide a longer battery life than Galaxy M40. We believe that Xiaomi Mi 9T will last more than Huawei P20 Lite 2019 due to its AMOLED display and its efficient Snapdragon 730 chipset.

Price

The prices of these handsets strictly depend on the markets. Samsung Galaxy M40 starts from about €260/$292, Huawei P20 Lite 2019 costs €280/$315, while Xiaomi Mi 9T comes with a €300/$337 initial price. Overall, we suggest you spend a bit more to grab a unit of the Xiaomi Mi 9T as it is a way better handset than the others in this trio.

Vivo Z1 Pro specs teased: Snapdragon 712 processor, 32MP selfie camera, and more

It was initially reported that the Vivo Z1 Pro launching soon in India is a rebranded Vivo Z5x. New details have surfaced revealing both phones are not the same.

Vivo Z1 Pro

Vivo India’s online shop has a teaser page for the phone and it contains some of the phone’s key specs. For starters, the Vivo Z1 Pro will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 712 processor. Vivo even goes on to brag that the Z1 Pro will be the first Snapdragon 712 phone in India.

Vivo Z1 Pro Snapdragon 712

The processor was announced this year alongside the Xiaomi Mi 9 SE which is still the only commercially-available phone powered by the processor. Technically, the Snapdragon 712 is a Snapdragon 710 with a higher clock speed. However, there are other new features too like support for Quick Charge 4+ and Qualcomm’s True Wireless Stereo Plus technology.

The Vivo Z1 Pro will also come with a punch hole display but rather than house a 16MP sensor like the Z5x, it will have a 32MP “In-Display Camera”.

Vivo Z1 Pro 32MP selfie Vivo Z1 Pro battery

The phone will pack a 5000mAh battery and have support for 18W fast-charging technology.

In the promo images, we can see the phone has triple rear cameras, a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, and an audio jack. It is also shown in the same Aurora color variant as the Z5x.

There is still no release date yet but seeing as Vivo already revealed some of its key specs, the launch should be around the corner.

By the way, you can read our review of the Z5x before the Z1 Pro is released.
