Oppo Reno, Reno 10x zoom and Reno 5G launched for the global market

Chinese tech giant OPPO has launched the Reno models for the global market. The models will soon be available to buy in Europe. The Reno was first unveiled in China a couple of weeks back bearing a 10X zoom version.

The OPPO Reno models comprise of the Reno, Reno 10X Zoom edition and now a Reno 5G. The OPPO Reno 10X Zoom Edition elicits more excitement and the 5G version also bundles the 10X zoom edition features. While the standard edition is powered by a Snapdragon 710 chipset, the Reno 10x zoom edition packs a Snapdragon 855 chipset. Both models look very similar but there are some few differences in their designs. The 10x zoom edition packs a 6.65-inch AMOLED display while the standard model has a smaller 6.4-inch display. Both displays are near bezel-less, devoid of any form of screen notch. The Reno models use a similar 16MP shark fin-shaped pop-up camera design for the selfies. The locations of the power button on the right and the volume rockers on the left side of the display are consistent on both models. Further, both the standard and 10X zoom edition of the Reno come with USB-C ports and the SIM card slot is located on the left side of the USB-C port while there is a speaker grill on the right.

The back panel is where you will find most of the significant differences between the two models. The major highlight of the 10x zoom model is the 10X hybrid zoom technology which it features. It packs three rear cameras; a 48MP high-definition main camera + 13 MP periscope telephoto lens + 8 MP super wide-angle lens. At the same time, the device uses dual optical image stabilization (OIS), triple focus, and can take a true and clear 10x zoom photo without a tripod. The model will only be available in 8GB RAM + 256GB storage option.

On its part, the standard Reno comes with a dual camera setup as it lacks the 10x zoom feature. OPPO Reno standard edition features OIS-assisted 48MP + 5MP dual camera module on its rear aspect. This version comes in 6GB+128GB and 8GB+256GB variant. Both phones have in-display fingerprint readers, stereo speakers and VOOC 3.0 charging, however, only the Reno 10x zoom offers Dolby Audio and a slightly larger battery. The vanilla Reno does get a 3.5mm headphone jack, which the premium model lacks.

OPPO Reno 5G

OPPO also announced that it has partnered with Swisscom (Switzerland), EE (UK), SingTel (Singapore), Telstra and Optus (Australia) to launch the Reno 5G version globally. The Reno 5G is based on the flagship 10X zoom edition and may grab the crown as the first 5G phone to be available in Europe. Swisscom launched its 5G network in Zurich just two weeks ago. EE will trial its 5G network at the Glastonbury Festival scheduled to hold in late June.

As for the pricing, the standard Reno will start at €500 and will be available on May 10 in France, The Netherlands, Italy, Spain and Poland. The 10X Zoom edition is priced at €800 and will be available in early June. The Oppo Reno 5G will adopt a slightly higher €900 price tag and will go on sale in May. The Reno 10X zoom and Reno 5G come with International Warranty Service covering repairs in any country where OPPO as an official sales channel.

New official teaser confirms OnePlus 7 Pro has triple rear cameras

OnePlus has released a new teaser that confirms a key feature of its upcoming flagship, the OnePlus 7 Pro.

The new teaser is a 10-second that was shared on Twitter a short while ago. The caption for the video confirms the name of the device is indeed the OnePlus 7 Pro. There is even an official hashtag – #OnePlus7Pro.

The video shows a 2-dimensional drawing of the OnePlus 7 Pro and it reveals the phone will have three rear cameras arranged vertically and positioned in the middle. The familiar OnePlus logo sits below the sensors.

The specs for the cameras already leaked a few days ago. The OnePlus 7 Pro will have a 48MP primary camera paired with an 8MP f/2.4 telephoto lens and a 16MP f/2.2 ultra-wide angle lens.

The video also states the launch is scheduled for May 14 in New York. It will begin at 11 AM EDT (3 PM GMT/8:30 PM IST) and will also be live-streamed on the official YouTube Channel. Design

Meizu is being quite anti-conformist in the last years when it comes to flagships smartphones designs. For the Meizu 16s, the company decided once again not to embrace the notch philosophy, but it still managed to release a device with extremely thin bezels around the display. Further, it was realized with the COF bonding technique and the design curves at an angle of 0.5 degrees, it is very slim and it was engineered to guarantee the best ergonomics. That is why this device surely deserves an award for the originality and the care for the aesthetics. But this does not mean that Xiaomi Mi 9 and Lenovo Z6 Pro are not beautiful devices, with their stunning gradient glass backs and their slim bezels.

Display

It does not matter which device you choose, you will get a high-end and pretty nice display, despite not any of these devices offers a display that can be considered at the same level as the most expensive flagships. All come with a Full HD+ Super AMOLED display and an in-display fingerprint reader, but judging from the specs on the paper, Xiaomi Mi 9 and Lenovo Z6 Pro should be better. Due to the fact that they are HDR10-compliant and they have high DCI-P3 coverage, they should be able to show more brilliant colors.

Hardware/Software

When it comes to the hardware, Lenovo Z6 Pro is the winner, but only for a slight margin. Indeed, all of them come with the Snapdragon 855 chipset, so you would not notice a huge difference in speed and reactivity. But Lenovo Z6 Pro has more RAM and more internal storage in its highest-end variant. It is equipped with up to 12 GB of RAM and up to 512 GB of internal storage, which you can furtherly expand with a micro SD. The second place goes to Meizu 16s which comes with up to 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage. Note that both Meizu 16s and Xiaomi Mi 9 lack the micro SD slot.

Camera

Cameras are definitely among the strongest points of these handsets. They are equipped with different setups, but each of them is impressive. Meizu 16s comes with optical stabilization and a very bright aperture, Xiaomi Mi 9 lacks optical stabilization but it has a triple camera including an ultrawide lens, while Lenovo Z6 Pro, which is the most interesting at a first glance, comes with a quad camera including a TOF 3D sensor and an ultrawide lens. It is still too early to establish which one clicks better photos as two out of three devices have just been announced, so you will have to wait a bit to know our opinion about their cameras.

Battery

Lenovo Z6 Pro has a way bigger battery with a capacity of 4000 mAh, so it will most likely last a lot more than Xiaomi Mi 9 and Meizu 16s in most of the scenarios. And it even comes with the fastest charging technology, so despite its big capacity, it will charge faster.

Price

All of these devices come with very interesting prices: Lenovo Z6 Pro starts from just €400/$445, Meizu 16s costs €420/$468 and Xiaomi Mi 9 carries a €450/$500 price tag. Overall, Lenovo Z6 Pro looks like the most complete device due to its bigger battery, better memory configurations, and a very nice camera department.

Meizu M16S Hands On: No Notch, Just the good old Bezels!

Lately, smartphone manufacturers are attacking the bezels around the display like it’s the enemy to kill. Everyone wants to get rid of anything apart from the display on the phone’s front. We have smartphones that hide the front camera inside its body via a pop-up motor. There are even patents which show off an in-display camera design (coming soon), that lies beneath the display. For those looking for a less expensive option, there’s the notch, and I think we all will agree that waterdrop seems to be the most preferred one. Then came the punch hole camera, that reserves a small dot on the display, usually on one corner, so that it doesn’t hinder your experience.

Meizu’s take on the issue of bezels is a bit unique. With the Meizu 16th model, the company paved the way for a design that embraces the bezels (our 16th hands-on here!) around the display. The new Meizu 16S takes the same design to another level by adding a larger display, surrounded by even thinner bezels. The bezels on the top and the bottom are slimmer, with the chin measuring just 4.2mm. The top bezel is pretty slim as well, despite housing the front camera. This was made possible by using the 20MP Samsung 3T2 selfie sensor, which is the world’s smallest front facing camera.

The display is now 6.2-inches in size, in a relatively similar form factor as its predecessor (151.9 x 73.4 x 7.6mm). The phone might not be as light as the previous model, but at 165 grams, it’s still pretty easy to hold. Not to mention the 0.5° angle arc design that makes it comfortable to hold, even with one hand. The increase in thickness from 7.3mm on the Meizu 16th to 7.6mm in the 16S model is justified because of a significant increase in battery capacity. The new model houses a larger 3600mAh battery on board, which is a solid 20% increase.

We got the pearl white model in for review and it looks enticing. The back has what Meizu calls a plasma finish that gives it a premium look. However, we are even more excited to see how that Carbon Black variant with carbon fiber texture will look in our hands on. We’ll try to get that variant for review, but for now, we are playing around with this Pear White model.

Meizu 16S camera — The Meizu 16S has a slight camera bulge

The dual rear camera module consists of a 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor and a 20MP IMX250 sensor. There’s four-axis OIS to ensure the shots come out steady. The AI scene recognition will try to match the right settings for the perfect shot, depending on the environment.

The power and volume buttons are on the right while the left side remains clean. This is because the SIM card slot goes down below, alongside the speaker and USB-C port.

Inside, the Meizu 16S is powered by the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor with 6GB /8GB RAM and 128GB / 256GB storage options. Adreno 640 GPU works together with Meizu’s Hyper Gaming tech offering a smooth and lag-free gaming experience. Further, mEngine 3.0 also provides an immersive experience with games like BuildTopia.

Finally, Meizu has ensured that the phone supports NFC. There are stereo speakers for a rich audio experience. Unfortunately, in the pursuit of adding a bigger battery, Meizu had to kill the headphone jack. So, you will have to use its Type-C port for your wired audio needs.

Nubia Red Magic 3 benchmarked on Master Lu, confirms 12GB RAM variant

The Nubia Red Magic 3 will be unveiled on Sunday, April 28. The phone will pack some interesting features including a 90Hz display. Ahead of the launch, the device has been benchmarked on Master Lu and the result reveals some key details.

The Red Magic 3 will have the model number NX629J. It will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 flagship processor clocked at 2.84GHz. There are reports of a 12GB RAM variant and the benchmark result confirms that. The other variant will have 8GB of RAM.

The device has a CPU score of 174,283 points and a GPU score of 191,043 points. Its memory score is 58,699 points and its storage score is 48,922 points with a read speed of 836M/s and a write speed of 257M/s.

The Red Magic 3’s overall score is 472,947, far ahead of the Xiaomi Black Shark 2 which has a total score of 404,809 points and the Vivo iQOO which has a score of 384,718 points.

OPPO A9 gets listed on official site, priced at ¥1799 (~$268)

Press renders and a few details of the OPPO A9 leaked yesterday. Now more details have surfaced thanks to an official listing on OPPO‘s own website.

The OPPO A9 will have a 6.53-inch display with a 90.70% screen-to-body ratio. It has a waterdrop notch and the display is covered by Gorilla Glass 5.

The processor powering the phone wasn’t revealed but the website says it will have 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

The OPPO A9 will not have a 48MP camera as previously reported but a 16MP primary camera. There is a depth sensor too for portrait images. The camera can intelligently identify up to 22 different scenes. There is also Ultra Night Mode 2.0 for better low-light images. The selfie camera is a 16MP sensor too with AI beauty mode and up to 8 different filters.

The phone will come with GameBoost 2.0, a game acceleration software engine that ensures your games are lag-free and smooth. It will also intelligently switch between 4G and Wi-Fi for uninterrupted online gaming.

The OPPO A9 will run ColorOS 6 out of the box based on Android 9 Pie. ColorOS 6 brings a ton of AI features.

Xiaomi’s Mi Wireless Handheld Sweeper is now up for crowdfunding, costs 99 yuan ($15)

Xiaomi, the China-based company which is known for smartphones, has also established itself in lifestyle products category as well. One of the areas where the company focuses is home cleaning, which largely remains untouched when it comes to using technology.

In this category, the China-based company has already launched a few models of vacuum cleaners. Last year, the company had launched ultra-light Deerma Spray Mop, which was priced at just 59 yuan (~$9).

Today, the company has expanded its portfolio in this category by launching Mi Wireless Handheld Sweeper. It is now live on the company’s crowdfunding platform and is priced at 99 yuan, which roughly converts to $15.

The company says that when using a traditional broom to sweep the ground, some dust will still remain because of its length as well as the semi-open design. This is the issue that the new Mi Wireless Handheld Sweeper is tackling.

It comes with a double brush design that ensures that the dust does not leak and faster sweeping. If you are worried about the battery life, given that the product is wireless, the company claims that it offers a long battery life. The device comes powered by a 2,000mAh large-capacity battery and the company claims that a single charge can provide a runtime of around 2 hours.

The product adopts a spiral planting process, the bristles are tight and firm, and the main brush adopts the design of the V-shaped bristles. The main brush speed is 1300r/min, and the high-speed operation will dump the garbage into the garbage box, which is not only efficient and fast but also can avoid dust.

The Mi Wireless Handheld Sweeper can rotate in any direction and has a main panel has the opening key, which can be opened by tapping and the LED indicator lights up blue when working. It measures 270mm x 170mm and weighs less than 1kg.

It comes with a thick non-woven fabric that has self-contained electrostatic powder and can effectively absorb the fine dust and debris that are difficult to sweep. When the material gets degraded, you can throw it out as its environmentally friendly.

China’s first public 5G network goes live in Shenzhen

After various estimations, calculations and approximations, China’s first 5G network is now live in the Qianhai-Shekou Free Trade Zone in country’s southern tech hub Shenzhen. Now China is among a few countries including the US and South Korea adopting the 5G networks.

China’s state telecom carrier – China Unicom has built 111 5G base stations by joining hands with FTZ (Free Trade Zone) in Shenzhen. It will help the companies and locals to enjoy and experience the new technology. The low latency and higher speeds will lead to improved opportunities and will boost tech startups and companies. The capacity will be gradually increased to 7000 base stations across Shenzhen before 2020.

Along with tremendous changes in standard applications, 5G technology will evolve the new class of bandwidth-intensive applications – AR (Augmented reality), VR (Virtual Reality), cloud gaming and OTT. Indian Court reverses ban on TikTok

A temporary ban on the TikTok – a video sharing platform is now lifted after the Madras High Court ruling. The new decision came after April 24 hearing against a plea filed by ByteDance – TikTok’s parent company. Madurai Bench headed by N Kirubakaran and SS Sundar of Madras High Court under the directions of the Supreme Court of India made the decision to unban the app.

In the ruling, the court asked TikTok to update their privacy norms accordingly and also act on the complaints within three to 36 hours. TikTok’s advocate Issace Mohanlal claimed the app has technology to filter the nude and pornographic content from the app.

Last Week, the Madras High Court passed an order to ban the video app in India. Acting on the court’s directive, India’s Information and Broadcasting ministry asked Google and Apple to pull down the TikTok from respective app stores in India. The TikTok ban affected its 120 million users, led to financial losses of $500,000 each day and even risked jobs of 250 employees in India.

After the recent court ruling, TikTok welcomed it in a statement: “We are glad about this decision and we believe it is also greatly welcomed by our thriving community in India, who use TikTok as a platform to showcase their creativity. We are grateful for the opportunity to continue serving our users better. While we’re pleased that our efforts to fight against misuse of the platform has been recognised, the work is never “done” on our end. We are committed to continuously enhancing our safety features as a testament to our ongoing commitment to our users in India.”

Whereas the plaintiff’s lawyer, K. Neelamegam said that they did not plan to further appeal against the latest court’s order. But will initiate contempt of court proceedings if TikTok does not meet the conditions set by the court.

As the OnePlus 7 launch nears, the OnePlus 6T is going out of stock

OnePlus has confirmed that the China-based company will officially take the wraps off its upcoming flagship smartphone lineup on 14th May which is the successor to the OnePlus 6T. The company is expected to launch three phones — OnePlus 7, 7 Pro, and 7 Pro 5G.

Now, as the launch of the OnePlus 7 series is nearing, the company is running out of stock for a few models of the current-generation OnePlus 6T smartphones globally. As per the reports, the OnePlus 6T is now out of stock in the US, as well as Spain and Italy.

The smartphone was launched in two variants — one with 6GB of RAM and another with 8GB of RAM, with a starting price of $549 for the base model. Later, the company also launched the OnePlus 6T Thunder Purple edition for $579 but it has been out of stock from some time as it was a limited edition device.

While there’s a possibility that the device has been out of stock and could make a re-entry in stores but it’s highly unlikely given that its successor is getting launched on 14th May. And the fact that the pricing of OP7 won’t be much higher compared to the OP6T, the company won’t continue selling the older device.

Ahead of the launch of the OnePlus 7 series, the pricing of the OnePlus 7 Pro has been leaked online. It reveals that there will be available in three variants — 6GB RAM+128GB storage, 8GB RAM+256GB storage, and 12GB RAM+256GB storage.

The leak reveals that while the 8GB+256GB variants will cost €749/$749, the 12GB+256GB variant will go for €819/$819. From this, it seems that the 6GB RAM variant will cost less but won’t be anywhere near the OP6T price.

However, the leaked pricing is for the ‘Pro’ variant, which isn’t a fair comparison to the OnePlus 6T. The pricing of OnePlus 7 — the direct successor of the OP6T is not yet known, which is likely to be similar to the pricing of the OnePlus 6T smartphone.

On April 23, Lenovo had announced the Snapdragon 855 Lenovo Z6 Pro flagship phone. The handset has been available for reservations since its announcement. Its sales are scheduled to begin on April 29. The Chinese firm has confirmed that 200,000 units of the Lenovo Z6 Pro have been registered in a single day after its launch. Apple iPhone sales in the first quarter paled against Huawei, claims industry report

When it comes to global smartphone shipments, Samsung has been dominating the market since quite some time. However, the competition is intense between Apple and Huawei for the second spot.

Last year, for some time, Huawei overtook Apple for the second position in the global smartphone shipments, but Apple reclaimed the position soon after that. But the way Huawei is growing its business, it seems that the company will soon grab the second spot.

Also, the sales of Apple’s iPhones are no match to that of Huawei. According to a report from industry research firm OTR Global, Apple iPhone sales made up just 70 percent of all Huawei handset sales in the first quarter.

As per the report, Apple shipped between 37 million and 42 million iPhones, less than Wall Street predictions of between 40 million and 50 million, a recent investor note shows. Huawei’s financial report for the period claims the company managed to ship over 59 million smartphones, its highest ever first-quarter sales count.

This is largely a result of the declining demand for the iPhone upgrades and the sales of the iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max — the third current-generation smartphones, are not as high as the company anticipated. In fact, the older handsets like the iPhone 8 fared better in comparison to the newer models.

According to the research firm Canalys, Apple’s worldwide sales fell 7.3 percent from last year’s third to the fourth quarter. The company will be releasing its first-quarter financials later this month, with forecasts of a revenue tally between $55 billion and $59 billion for the period, an up to 35 percent drop from the $84.3 billion in the final fourth of last year.

In a bid to attract more buyers for the company’s new iPhones, the US-based technology giant has started slashing the price of the smartphone, but that strategy is yet to yield results for the company.

There is a possibility that the Honor 20 and 20 Pro phones may go official first in China before its international announcement. The Honor 20 may feature a 3,650mAh battery whereas the Pro variant may house a larger battery. The 3C certification of Honor 20 has revealed that it will be equipped with 22.5W rapid charging. The EMUI 9 flavored Android 9 Pie OS will come preloaded on the device.
