Lenovo Z5s vs Huawei P Smart (2019) vs Honor 10 Lite: Specs Comparison

Yesterday, Lenovo surprised everyone by announcing the first smartphone with Snapdragon 855. Besides the Z5 Pro GT, the Chinese company also announced Lenovo Z5s: one of the cheapest smartphones with Snapdragon 710. Is its value for money high enough to beat Huawei’s concurrency in the midrange segment? Through this comparison between its specifications and the ones of the new Huawei P Smart (2019) and Honor 10 Lite, you will find out.

Design

The aesthetic differences between Lenovo Z5s, Huawei P Smart 2019 and Honor 10 Lite are just marginal. Honor 10 Lite is the one I like more because of its cleaner design, but some may prefer Lenovo Z5s because of its more magnetic gradient colors. Whatever you choose, you will get a beautiful device with an awesome glass back. If you want better build quality, you should go for the Lenovo Z5s because it is the only with the Gorilla Glass protection, so it should be more resistant.

Display

Displays are not a key point of these smartphones. They have midrange-class IPS panels. Honor 10 Lite should be the inferior one as it does not feature the LTPS technology, unlike its rivals. Huawei P Smart (2019) is my favorite because it has a smaller notch, but at the same time, it has slightly thicker bezels and, as said above, it does not seem to feature the Gorilla Glass protection, unlike Lenovo Z5s.

Specs & Software

Lenovo Z5s is a champion of performances in its price range. It comes with a Snapdragon 710 chipset which provides way faster and smoother performances than Kirin 710 in every scenario, with a 10 nm production process and a max frequency of 2.2 GHz. It also comes with up to 6 GB of RAM. Huawei P Smart 2019 is the most disappointing one as it only features 3 GB of RAM, while Honor 10 Lite sits in the middle with Kirin 710 and up to 6 GB of RAM.

Camera

If we talk about the rear camera setup, Lenovo Z5s is a superior handset thanks to its triple camera composed of a main 16 MP sensor with f/1.8 aperture, a secondary telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom and a third sensor which is able to capture depth info. If we talk about the front camera, Honor 10 Lite should be better with its AI-backed 24 MP snapper. Huawei P Smart (2019) is disappointing on both sides even though its camera quality is sufficient for its price tag.

Battery

Given that Lenovo Z5s is still not on the shelves, we still can not give you info about its battery life, but we believe that, even though it has a slightly smaller battery, it might last more than its opponent because of its well-optimized SoC. Further, it is the only phone of the trio to support a fast charging technology, while Huaei P Smart 2019 and Honor 10 Lite come with standard 5V / 2A charging.

Price

There is no challenge, Lenovo released a device with an outstanding price tag, at least regarding the Chinese market. If it lands in Europe and its price does not raise a lot, Lenovo Z5s may become the best-buy of the moment. It is the winner the comparison and it was launched with a price tag of about €220/$202. Huawei P Smart 2019 costs about €250/$285 in Europe and it is a cool price for a device like this, but Honor 10 Lite costs less despite being a better device than Huawei P Smart (2019), so it takes the second place of this comparison. You can find it for just €240/$274 in Europe. But at the end of the day, I would definitely choose Lenovo Z5s even if it had a sub-€300/$343 price tag.

Android Pie released for Nokia 8 just in time for the holidays

After failing to release the Android Pie update back in November as promised due to unresolved issues, HMD Global has finally released a stable update for the Nokia 8. The announcement was made today by Juho Sarvikas, Chief Product Officer at HMD Global.

Unlike other Android Pie announcements made for its other phones, the Nokia 8 doesn’t get an elaborate announcement. The update is a phased rollout, so it may not hit your devices immediately.

Android Pie brings a new navigation system, adaptive battery, and adaptive brightness. The beta update came bundled with December’s security patch, so we expect this version also has the security patch included.

The Nokia 8 was released in 2017 as HMD Global’s first flagship smartphone. It has a 5.3-inch screen with a 1440 x 2560 display covered with Gorilla Glass 5. There is a Snapdragon 835 processor under the hood with 4GB/6GB of RAM and 64GB/128GB of storage. Its second SIM slot doubles as a MicroSD card slot which allows you to add up to 512GB of extra storage.

Nokia 8

The Nokia 8 packs dual 13MP cameras with Zeiss optics on its back in a Monochrome + RGB configuration. It also has a 13MP front-facing camera, a front-mounted fingerprint scanner, an audio jack, and a Type-C port that charges a 3090mAh at 18W.

Xiaomi Redmi Go gets certified in Singapore; is this Xiaomi’s Android Go phone?

Android Go is a light version of Android that has been designed to work on devices with 1GB or less of RAM. The operating system has specially designed apps that consume less data and resources. A number of manufacturers such as Samsung, Huawei, ASUS, and Alcatel have all released Android Go phones and a new report may mean Xiaomi is joining the list soon.

A Xiaomi phone with the model number M1903C3GG was seen on Singapore’s Info-communications Media Development Authority (IMDA). The same device was seen at the FCC and the EEC but it’s Singapore’s agency that reveals the phone’s marketing name is Redmi Go.

Xiaomi Redmi Go M1903C3GG

The name Redmi Go has led to assumptions that this will be Xiaomi’s first Android Go phone. The dimensions of the device revealed by the FCC hints at the Redmi Go having a 5.9-inch screen. Since it is a budget device, we expect the resolution to be at most 1440 x 720 (HD+). It is also said to have dual-SIM support, 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2. It is also expected to run Android Pie (Go Edition), have 1GB of RAM and a single camera on each side. With respect to the processor, we may see Xiaomi adopt a MediaTek or Qualcomm entry-level chipset.

The Redmi Go may be an Android Go phone but it may not run stock Android like other Android Go phones. Samsung’s Android Go phone, the Galaxy J4 Core has Samsung’s Experience UI on top, so Xiaomi may also decide to put MIUI on top. This is just speculation but it will be interesting to see if Xiaomi can pull off a low-resource version of MIUI.

Redmi Pro 2 leaked posters reveal Snapdragon 675; Could it be 48MP mystery Xiaomi phone?

At the beginning of this month, Xiaomi President Lin Bin shared an image of a mysterious Xiaomi phone with a 48-megapixel camera. Bin also confirmed that the smartphone would be made official in January 2019. Initial rumors had speculated that it could be a Mi series flagship phone, but multiple Chinese leaksters have been claiming that it could be a Redmi flagship phone. It is also being speculated that it could be the first phone to be fueled by the Snapdragon 675 chipset that was announced in October. A new leak has surfaced that points at that phone being the Redmi Pro 2, a successor to the 2016 Redmi Pro, Xiaomi’s first dual camera phone.

Teaser posters of the Redmi Pro 2 smartphone were leaked by a Weibo user on the microblogging site and one of them reveals that the Snapdragon 675 will be premiering on the Redmi Pro 2. Though it is a long shot, the rumor about the 48-megapixel camera phone having a Snapdragon 675 chipset has led some to presume the Redmi Pro 2 is the said device.

The Snapdragon 675 is an 11nm chipset that includes a pair of Cortex A76 CPU clocked at 2.0 GHz and hexa-core Cortex A55 working at 1.78 GHz. For graphics, it features an Adreno 612 GPU. The chipset supports capturing images of up to 48-megapixels. Hence, it is speculated that the mysterious Xiaomi phone with “48MP Camera” mentioned on its rear could be fueled by Snapdragon 675. The appearance of the leaked posters has given birth to rumors that the Redmi Pro 2 could be featuring Snapdragon 675 and 48-megapixel rear camera. There is no information available on the other specs of the rumored Redmi Pro 2 phone.

Mystery Xiaomi Phone with 48-megapixel camera

Xiaomi launched Redmi Pro in 2016 as the first Redmi series smartphone with dual rear cameras. However, the Chinese manufacturer had did not release a successor phone for in 2017.  The Chinese manufacturer is now prepping up to launch the Xiaomi Mi Play smartphone with a waterdrop notch screen and dual rear cameras on Dec. 24. Probably, more information on the alleged Redmi Pro 2 smartphone may surface after the launch of the Mi Play.

Honor YOYO Smart Speaker scheduled to launch in China on December 26

Last month, along with launching the Honor Magic 2 smartphone, the China-based technology giant Huawei also unveiled its new AI-based smart voice assistant — YOYO.

Now, the company is expanding the lineup of devices running its YOYO voice assistant and is now all set to launch YOYO-powered smart speakers. Huawei has scheduled a launch event on 26th December in China where it will launch Honor YOYO Smart Speaker.

Honor YOYO Smart Speaker

YOYO, the AI-based smart voice assistant can carry out a wide range of functions just through voice commands. It supports features such as AI Driving, Translation, Shopping, and knowledge recognition. This is the same smart assistant that is powering the Honor FlyPods Pro.

It also supports in-call live voice translation, a feature similar to Google Duplex. During the Magic 2 launch, Honor showed a video of the YOYO voice assistant making a hotel reservation for its owner. The company also touted that the smart voice assistant will also be able to control DJI drones through voice commands. In a live demonstration, Honor’s CEO used his voice to ask the drone to take off, take a picture of him, and also land.

While we know the capabilities of Honor’s YOYO smart voice assistant, it is not yet clear if the upcoming smart speaker from the company will support all the features. There’s also no information related to the Honor YOYO Smart Speaker apart from its launch date.

Xiaomi Redmi 7 Pro appears in live photo, has a water-drop notch

Xiaomi‘s Redmi series is usually refreshed about every six/seven months. The Redmi 4 launched in May 2017 and its successor, the Redmi 5 was announced in December of the same year. The Redmi 6 was announced six months later and now news of the Redmi 7 has started floating around the web.

A few days ago, it was reported that a couple of Xiaomi phones said to be variants of the Redmi 7 were certified by China’s communications commission. Now, a live image has surfaced on the web that shows the Redmi Pro 7 alongside its retail box.

Redmi 7 Pro

The Redmi 5 and Redmi 6 both launched with an 18:9 aspect ratio thanks to their reduced bezels. The Redmi Pro 7 will even have much thinner bezels as it embraces the water-drop notch design that was one of the trends this year. The retail box also has an orange hue instead of a white or even red box as the series is known for.

Unfortunately, the specs of the Redmi 7 Pro were not revealed. There are speculations that it will be powered by a Snapdragon 632 processor which has been termed the successor to the Snapdragon 625 that powers the Redmi 6 Pro. There are also unconfirmed reports that its battery capacity will be smaller. We advise you take these with a pinch of salt. What will most likely resurface in the Redmi Pro 7 are dual rear cameras and a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner.

Coolpad to launch three Mega-series smartphones in India tomorrow

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Coolpad, which launched Cool Play 8 a couple of days ago, has now announced that it will be launching three new smartphones in India tomorrow, i.e. on 20th December, under its Mega series.

The company has sent out a press release with an image teaser of the upcoming three phones, showing the front panel. All three devices in the image feature a traditional display without any kind of notch on top. The company’s last Mega-series smartphone in India was the Coolpad Mega 5A.

Coolpad Mega India

There’s sufficient bezel on the top and the bottom portion of the three displays, with no home button seen at the bottom. One smartphone unit is seen to sport capacitive buttons, while the other two presumably sport on-screen buttons.

As for the phone’s availability, Coolpad has already announced that all the upcoming three phones will be available for purchase exclusively through offline channels only.

Coolpad, like most other smartphone makers, decided to retreat from India’s competitive smartphone market last year. The company did not have any devices in the market for nearly a year but is now making a comeback.

After launching the Coolpad Note 8 in India last month for Rs. 9,999 (approximately $135), it is now set to expand its portfolio in India by launching three devices tomorrow. Similarly, Meizu also recently re-entered the Indian smartphone market with the launch of Meizu C9, Meizu 16th, and Meizu M9T.

Recently, Coolpad launched the Cool Play 8 in the Chinese market as a successor to the Cool Play 7C. The new smartphone features a massive 6.2-inch display but unlike the upcoming Mega-series phones, this one comes with a notched display.

The phone is powered by MediaTek’s MT6750 chipset along with 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage. There’s also microSD card slot which enables you to further expand the phone’s storage capacity up to 128GB.

As for the photography, it comes with vertically-aligned dual camera setup featuring a 16-megapixel primary sensor and a 2-megapixel secondary sensor and an 8-megapixel front-facing snapper for taking selfies. Coming to the software, it runs the Android with the company’s custom Cool UI 9.0 skin on top and is powered by a 4,000mAh battery. Priced at 999 Yuan, it will go on sale from 21st December.

Honor V20 video shows Link Turbo LTE + Wi-Fi in action

Honor will be announcing the Honor V20 smartphone on Dec. 26. The recent teasers released by Honor has revealed that its full screen experience, 48-megapixel rear camera and Link Turbo are the main features of the Honor V20. Various teasers and leaks have revealed the marvelous in-screen camera hole enabled display of the smartphone. Honor has also shared the camera samples of the V20’s 48-megapixel Sony IMX586 sensor. Link Turbo combines the LTE and Wi-Fi signals to deliver enhanced internet connectivity experience. A video showcasing the Link Turbo feature of the Honor V20 in action has surfaced on Weibo.

During the launch of Honor Magic 2 smartphone in October, the Chinese manufacturer had introduced the Link Turbo feature. With Wi-Fi and 4G LTE working together at the same time, users can take advantage of uninterrupted high-speed internet connectivity without experiencing high-latency and low speed issues. Shown below is the leaked video that compares download speeds of Link Turbo (4G + LTE) with 4G and Wi-Fi.

The video reveals that the Link Turbo technology allowed Honor V20 to download a 202.3MB video file in just 24 seconds. It took 44 seconds for the same file to download through 4G. It took nearly 9 minutes for Wi-Fi connection to download the file. Link Turbo technology allows the device send and receive data packets simultaneously through Wi-Fi and LTE cellular networks to provide a stable connectivity experience. The technology can automatically switch to 4G or Wi-Fi connection, if either of the two experience drop in signal strength.

Honor V20 will be powered by the Kirin 980 chipset. It will also carry support for dual-band GPS technology for accurate location tracking. Rumors have it that the smartphone will be equipped with a TOF (Time of Flight) camera sensor for creating 3D models of objects and people for AR.  The handset will be packed with 4,000mAh battery that will tag along support for 22.5W fast charging. Rumors have it that the Chinese manufacturer will be releasing a special edition of the smartphone called Honor V20 Maserati Edition.

Huawei could be aiming for 250 million smartphone shipments in the year 2019

During the Nova 4 launch event in China, He Gang, president of Huawei’s consumer business mobile phone product line, revealed that the company’s total smartphone shipments for this year will exceed 200 million units by 25th December.

When Chinese media asked He Gang regarding the company’s goal for the next year, he said that nothing has been confirmed yet but suggested that the company could be looking at 230 million to 250 million shipments next year.

Based on those numbers, it seems that the company is aiming to grow its mobile business by around 30 percent to 50 percent year-on-year. However, He Gang stressed that everything is dependent on the market conditions and ensures steady progress with channels and supplier partners.

He further added that the company will soon announce its sales expectations for the next year. He said that Huawei will continue to increase investment in research and development, and will keep bringing new products to everyone.

During Huawei Global Terminal Partner and Developer Conference in 2018 in June this year, Huawei’s consumer business CEO Yu Chengdong set a target of 200 million shipments for Huawei and Honor smartphones. The annual target for 2019 was set at 250 million units and announced that the company will strive to reach 300 million units in 2020.

According to data from IDC, Huawei managed to ship around 146 million units in the first three quarters of this year. This means that to cross the mark of 200 million units, the company’s fourth-quarter shipments will increase by more than 30 percent.

This year has been a bag of mixed blessings for Huawei. While its deal with AT&T didn’t work out due to security concerns raised by the US Senate, which could have slow down the company’s growth, it still managed to become the second largest smartphone company in the world, pushing Apple to third place in terms of market share.

Alleged Honor V20 Maserati Edition image leaked

Earlier this week, Honor Brand Strategy and Development Officer Zhang Xiaoyun had shared an image on her Weibo account and had asked Honor fans to guess something surprising that was hidden in it. Zooming into the image suggested that Honor could be planning to introduce Honor V20 Maserati Edition alongside its regular version. A Chinese tipster has leaked an image of the alleged Honor V20 Maserati Edition that features the logo of the car company on its rear.

A close look at the above image that was shared by Zhang in her Weibo post shows the text “M…x Honor V20” which indicated that the name of the smartphone could be mentioned along with another brand name that begins with “M”.

Since the past few years, Huawei has been working with Porsche for launching Porsche Design branded flagship phones. Earlier this month, OnePlus had collaborated with McLaren to launch OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition. Lenovo CEO has recently shared an image of the Lenovo Z5 Pro GT Ferrari Edition. Hence, there is a possibility that Honor may launch Honor V20 Maserati Edition.

Shown below is the image of the alleged Honor V20 Maserati Edition with shiny black rear. At the top-left corner of the handset is single camera sensor which is separated from the module that includes dual camera sensors and LED flash. The triple camera sensors are followed by “AI Camera” text. Right at the center of the device is the Maserati logo and the brand name of the phone maker is placed towards the bottom.

The glass rear of the alleged Honor V20 Maserati Edition is curved towards the edges. The USB-C port seems to be placed between a pair of external speakers on the bottom edge of the device. There is no fingerprint scanner on the device which suggests it could be equipped with an in-display fingerprint sensor.

The Honor V20 will be fueled by 8 GB of RAM and Kirin 980 chipset. It will include 4,000mAh battery with 22.5W fast charging. One of the major highlights of the smartphone is that it is equipped with 48-megapixel Sony IMX586 camera. The handset is also rumored to feature ToF 3D stereo camera. The smartphone will be equipped with a display that features a small cutout at the top-left corner for the selfie camera.

Since the authenticity of the above shown leaked image of the Honor V20 Maserati Edition could be confirmed, it is advisable to digest the report with a grain of salt.

Yesterday, Xiaomi confirmed that it will be launching the Xiaomi Mi Play smartphone on Dec. 24. The smartphone has already appeared on TENAA with its entire specifications. Today, the Chinese manufacturer has shared fresh teasers to officially reveal the handset.

Xiaomi has launched multiple smartphones with notched screens, but the upcoming Xiaomi Mi Play will be featuring a waterdrop notch. The rear side of the phone seems to feature a glass panel.

The purpled colored rear has bright lines running from top to bottom. It is equipped with vertical dual camera and a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. The teasers also suggest that the Xiaomi Mi Play handset will be aimed towards younger audience.

Apple at the receiving end for using an Android phone to promote Apple Music on Twitter

This year has seen its own fair share of controversy as far as brand loyalty and competition is concerned. Several times celebrities and Android smartphone brands have been trolled for utilizing an iPhone to promote an Android phone on Twitter. Most recently, Samsung Nigeria promoted the Galaxy Note 9 on its official Twitter handle from an iPhone. In a twist of fate, Apple now seems to have been caught in the same web.

In the early part of November, music star Ariana Grande posted a tweet about her Christmas & Chill EP. The official Apple Music account afterwards responded to this with a link attached to the album. But, YouTuber Marques Brownlee, who is fast gaining a reputation as a Twitter police, detected that the tweet by Apple Music was posted using Twitter for Android.

This isn’t supposed to be much of an issue since Apple Music is available to download on Android but a promotion by an official Apple account admin shouldn’t be from an Android device. Instead, it is supposed to come from any one of Apple’s own products. Especially when the amount of labour Apple puts into taking care of its image is put into consideration.
