Apple cancels iPhone 17 Pro’s anti-reflective display coating, leaving Samsung ahead

Apple recently launched an ad campaign suggesting that iPhone 16 users may not need a case or screen protector, thanks to the effectiveness of its Ceramic Shield. A leak from last month hinted that the iPhone 17 lineup would be even more durable, featuring a new AR coating on the glass to improve scratch resistance and reduce glare—similar to what we’ve seen on the Galaxy S24 Ultra and its successor. While the leak initially seemed promising, a new report from MacRumors suggests otherwise.

Image: @imparkerburton

The feature has been axed due to production issues, which means the iPhone 17 lineup, launching in September 2025, will stick with standard Ceramic Shield glass. This would’ve been a first for iPhones, enhancing visibility and color accuracy in bright light. But Apple reportedly hit a wall scaling the coating process for millions of units, making it unfeasible for its 2025 iPhones. The scrapped coating was meant to rival Samsung’s Gorilla Glass Armor, which boosts contrast and reduces reflections.

Apple’s current iPhones use a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating, but anti-reflective tech is limited to nano-texture displays on Macs and iPad Pros. Apple might have pivoted to nano-texture or a simpler coating, but the feature has likely shelved entirely for now, with X posts speculating a 2026 debut if manufacturing improves.

Image: @UniverseIce

This hiccup stings for Pro buyers expecting next-level durability and visual experience alongside rumored A19 Pro chips and 6.7- 6.9-inch displays. The iPhone 17 Air’s 5.65mm slimness and base models’ upgrades will still shine, but missing the coating puts Apple a step behind Samsung in display tech. For now, iPhone 17 Pro users will rely on Ceramic Shield’s proven toughness—still no slouch, but not the glare-busting leap fans hoped for.

Galaxy S21 series gets its final OS upgrade, One UI 7, ahead of schedule

Samsung’s Galaxy S21 series is getting a surprise: the Android 15-based One UI 7 update is rolling out ahead of its May schedule. Launched in 2021, the S21, S21+, and S21 Ultra are receiving their last major OS upgrade, starting in South Korea, with other markets soon to follow. The Galaxy S21 series, which debuted with Android 11 back in January 2021, is bowing out with a bang as One UI 7 lands early.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra Phantom Black Phantom Silver Featured 01

In South Korea, the update—firmware G99xNKSU8HYD9, about 3.5GB—hit devices on April 28, 2025, beating the expected May timeline. Indian and European S21 owners should see it soon; check Settings > Software Update > Download and Install to grab it.

This is the final major OS update for the S21 trio, now on quarterly security patches since early 2025, with full support nearing its end. One UI 7 brings a fresh UI with redesigned app icons, smoother animations, split Quick Panel and notifications, and Galaxy AI perks like Audio Eraser and enhanced Note Assist. The update is designed to make the most of the 6.2- 6.8-inch AMOLED displays and Snapdragon 888/Exynos 2100 chips.

For S21 owners, this is a bittersweet moment—savor the new big folders, customizable widgets, and Now Bar for live notifications, as it’s the last big improvement on software. Looking to upgrade? Trading in your S21 at Samsung’s e-shop might score a discount on the Galaxy S25, though its trade-in value has dipped since it left the US Certified Re-Newed program. Manual flashing via Samsung’s firmware database and Odin is an option for the impatient. As the S21 rides into the sunset, One UI 7 ensures it goes out in style, keeping these 2021 flagships relevant for a bit longer.

Huawei partners with 11 Chinese automakers to promote safer assisted driving

Huawei is steadily expanding its footprint in China’s electric vehicle (EV) industry. The company has partnered with a range of carmakers through its Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance (HIMA).

Under HIMA, Huawei plays an active role in product planning, design, marketing, user experience, and quality control, and provides intelligent hardware and software to traditional automakers. The latest product from this collaboration is the Luxeed R7 EREV in a joint venture with Chery.

Luxeed R7 EREV

Now, the company is moving deeper into the autonomous driving space. Over the weekend, Huawei’s intelligent driving unit, Qiankun, signed a non-binding safety pact with 11 Chinese automakers.

Huawei’s safety pact comes ahead of Tesla’s FSD push in China

The list includes state-owned giants like SAIC Motor and GAC Group, as well as Audi China. Notably absent from the list of signatories is Xiaomi, whose EV recently made headlines after a fatal crash in China. Meanwhile, Tesla is still awaiting approval for its Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology in the Chinese market.

Anyway, the new alliance is pushing for clearer communication with users, increased R&D investment, and stronger safety standards across the industry. Huawei is also reportedly in discussions with its partners to launch an “Intelligent Assisted Driving Safety Training Camp” to educate users on how to safely use advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS).

Huawei and BAIC partnership brand Stelato at Beijing Auto Show 2024

Qiankun was introduced a year ago as part of Huawei’s strategy to position itself as a core systems supplier in China’s EV and autonomous driving sectors.

At this year’s Shanghai Auto Show, Huawei unveiled ADS 4, its latest intelligent driving system, which promises a 20 percent boost in traffic efficiency and a 30 percent reduction in harsh braking. The system also includes upgraded collision avoidance features.

Huawei’s automotive business is also showing strong financial growth. In 2024, the division’s revenue surged nearly fivefold to 26.4 billion yuan (around $3.6 billion), turning a profit for the first time.

Asus VivoWatch 6 Aero is the world’s first fitness band with ECG and Blood Pressure monitoring

Asus isn’t exactly a household name when it comes to wearables, but its latest innovation is something you should be aware of. The company recently introduced the VivoWatch 6 Aero as the world’s first fitness band to offer electrocardiogram (ECG) and blood pressure monitoring. Not a watch. A band.

Asus VivoWatch 6 Aero Specifications

The VivoWatch 6 Aero is a compact and lightweight tracker weighing just 27 grams with the strap. It features a 1.1-inch AMOLED display and has a very basic fitness band look at a glance. It’s not flashy, but it’s not meant to be.

Asus is focusing on health features here, and the sensors packed inside are doing most of the heavy lifting. You get ECG, PPG, GPS, and G-sensors, along with 5ATM water resistance, so it can handle a little sweat or rain.

The headline feature is, of course, blood pressure monitoring. While Apple and Samsung offer this on their flagship smartwatches, Asus is the first to bring it to a fitness band.

Measuring BP is quite an active process. Users need to place a finger on the front sensor and remain still for a few seconds. The reading (in mm/Hg) will then show up on the screen or in the companion health app.

Asus says it’s using a “sputter deposition process” to measure blood pressure along with heart rate, blood oxygen, and HRV (stress index) at one time.

It’s not lacking in sensors either. The band features a PPG and ECG sensor at the back. The face of the device includes an additional PPG sensor, which is actually responsible for estimating blood pressure by reading light through your fingertip. That same front sensor can also be used to take blood oxygen readings.

There’s also built-in GPS to help provide more precise activity tracking. The device carries a 5ATM water resistance rating and runs the latest Asus Health AI 5.0 software which processes data in real time to give users feedback on their metrics.

As for the battery life, Asus claims up to five days of usage under normal conditions, and seven days in Power Save mode. The band supports both Android 10 and iOS 13 or later, and connects via Bluetooth 5.0 or newer.

Pricing and Availability

As with most Asus wearables, pricing and availability could determine how many people actually get to use it. There’s no word yet on global pricing yet, but in China, it’s selling for 1,199 yuan, or around $165 USD. That’s a noticeable bump from the previous VivoWatch 5 Aero, which launched at around $130.

OnePlus has confirmed that its upcoming 13s smartphone, also known as the OnePlus 13T in China (check out our OnePlus 13T review), will launch in India soon. However, it won’t be released in Europe or North America. Celina Shi, OnePlus Europe’s CMO, said the company currently has no plans to launch the 13s in Europe. Spencer Blank, head of marketing for OnePlus North America, confirmed the same for the US and Canada.

The phone is listed as “coming soon” on the OnePlus India website, but no launch date has been announced yet. Based on the Chinese version, the 13s will likely come with a Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, up to 16GB of RAM, and up to 1TB of storage. It will feature a 6.32-inch OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and flat edges. The phone will have a 50MP main camera, a 50MP 2x telephoto lens, and a 16MP front camera. It’s expected to pack a 6,260mAh battery with 80W fast charging. The alert slider has been replaced with a customizable “Quick Key” button.

In India, the starting price is expected to be around ₹45,000-50,000. For users outside India, importing is an option, but it comes with risks. The phone may not support all local network bands, which could affect performance. There will also be no official warranty or after-sales support outside India. Buyers considering an import should check compatibility and warranty terms carefully before making a decision.

Oppo K13 Turbo leaks with Active Cooling Fan, RGB lights, and Snapdragon 8s Gen 4

Oppo is gearing up to launch the K13 Turbo in China, hot on the heels of the K13’s India debut last week. A leaked hands-on image of its back reveals a unique twist: an active cooling fan and RGB lights, paired with the new Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 SoC. The RGB lighting on the back reinforces the ‘Turbo’ branding, giving the phone a distinctive, gamer-focused aesthetic.

A mid-range with an active cooling fan

Although a mid-tier chipset may not seem to fit well with the “Turbo” name, the inclusion of a cooling fan distinguishes the K13 Turbo as an attractive and interesting choice in its class. Thermal throttling tends to reduce benchmark performance, so companies spend money on more effective heat dissipation mechanisms to maintain performance over time. A decently implemented active cooling fan can carry this a notch further.

Though few details of how Oppo executes are available just yet, that active cooling at all is implemented indicates the firm has big dreams for this model. While various rivals might perform better in baseline benchmarks, better cooling might let the K13 Turbo provide real-world performance in a more sustained manner.

Powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8s Gen 4, a 4nm octa-core chip with an Adreno 825 GPU, the K13 Turbo likely avoids the price tag of the Snapdragon 8 Elite-powered phone. This choice makes it a bold outlier among gaming phones like the Asus ROG Phone 9, which typically pack top-tier SoCs.

Other specifications—such as the display, cameras, battery, and pricing—haven’t been confirmed yet. For reference, the K13, which is powered by the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1, starts at Rs 17,999 (~$210). Posts on X hype the cooling fan as a potential first for Oppo. While initially China-exclusive, Oppo might expand globally based on its success. With rivals like the iQOO Z10 Turbo Pro and Redmi Turbo 4 Pro, the K13 Turbo’s success will hinge on how well it balances cost and performance.

End of the Line: LG Smartphones Lose All Support in 2025

It has been a while since LG announced its exit from the smartphone market, joining other defunct phone brands like Nokia. Although, it still offered support for its existing lineup of devices. But now, the brand’s smartphones has finally reached the end of the line.

LG to Shut Down Smartphone Update Servers in 2025

The South Korean tech giant’s last flagship was the LG Wing, which debuted way back in October 2020. Following this, LG announced that it is pulling away from smartphones to focus on EVs in April 2021. The brand later sold all of its smartphone related patents to other smartphone OEMs like Oppo. While the mobile division shut down, support was still available for the latest gen LG devices. LG at least ensured update up to Android 12 on eligible smartphones.

LG Wing
LG Wing

But since then, there has not been any major update rolling out for any smartphone. There were still security patches that were promised for another three years. LG has announced that it is shutting down its smartphone update servers. Now, the company shared a warning a couple of weeks back. In its official forums post, LG shared appreciation for everyone who supported its mobile business and announced that it will close the mobile phone software upgrade (FOTA), update center, and LG Bridge service.

All of these services will go offline on 30th June 2025. This announcement likely doesn’t affect many users, but it marks the complete end of LG smartphones. You never know, certain LG devices might become collector’s pieces in a couple of years.

ESR MagMouse is the world’s first mouse that snaps to your laptop and has a built-in USB-C cable

Peripheral maker ESR is taking its magnetic expertise to a new frontier: wireless mice. The company has just launched MagMouse on Kickstarter, a sleek new wireless mouse that magnetically snaps onto laptops and tablets for easy, on-the-go carrying. It is designed for users constantly moving between meetings, classrooms, or workspaces, and even packs a built-in USB-C charging cable so you never have to hunt for one again.

ESR MagMouse Wireless Mouse

ESR MagMouse Specifications

The idea behind the MagMouse is all about portability and ease. It attaches magnetically via a detachable base fitted with reusable 3M adhesive. The mouse itself weighs just 75 grams, and ESR claims the magnetic base offers a strong 600-gram holding force thanks to retractable magnetic pins that align and lock precisely. This double-locking design is intended to prevent accidental detachment while you are moving between spaces with a laptop in one hand and coffee or papers in the other.

Aside from the magnetic magic, the MagMouse covers the practical basics too. It supports both Bluetooth 5.0 and 2.4GHz wireless, so it works across Windows, macOS, iOS, iPadOS, Android, and Linux. It also lets you adjust DPI across six levels (from 800 to 4800), giving you more control whether you’re editing photos or just browsing. ESR also says the silent switches cut noise by about 90% compared to regular mice, and the four-way scroll wheel makes it easier to move through giant spreadsheets or video timelines.

ESR MagMouse

Charging is another clever part of the equation. Instead of needing a separate cable, the MagMouse tucks a short USB-C cable neatly into its back. A full charge takes about 45 minutes and offers up to 160 hours of use. ESR also claims that just one minute of quick charging gives about four hours of runtime, which could be a lifesaver mid-meeting.

Pricing and Availability

The MagMouse is currently live on Kickstarter with early bird pricing starting at $24, a 32 percent discount from its eventual retail price of $36. It comes in black, white, and gray color options, each bundled with a color-matched magnetic base.

While magnetic mice are not entirely new, ESR’s approach of combining magnetic portability with built-in charging and dual-mode connectivity feels thoughtfully targeted toward modern mobile workflows.

In related news, Asus recently launched a budget-friendly Bluetooth silent mouse in India aimed at office workers and students, and also introduced a three-device Bluetooth mouse with adjustable DPI.

OnePlus 13T vs Xiaomi 15 Pro: Would You Choose Best Value or Best Specs?

OnePlus 13T and Xiaomi 15 Pro both aim to redefine what users can expect from upper-tier Android flagships, but they target slightly different audiences. With rising expectations in performance, camera, and charging tech, comparing these two highlights the growing divide between premium value and ultra-premium features. This head-to-head is essential to help users decide whether spending more truly delivers proportionally better smartphone experiences.

1. Design and Display

OnePlus 13T
OnePlus 13T

Build and Feel:
OnePlus 13T features a compact and lightweight design with a sleek aluminum alloy frame and IP65 rating. It’s more ergonomic in hand and ideal for users preferring smaller, manageable phones. In contrast, the Xiaomi 15 Pro is larger, heavier, and sturdier with an IP68 rating, giving it better protection in extreme conditions and more premium durability. For ruggedness and flagship-grade sealing, the Xiaomi 15 Pro leads. However, for compact design and ease of use, the OnePlus 13T is more practical.

Display Quality:
OnePlus 13T offers a 6.32″ LTPO AMOLED panel with Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and 1600 nits brightness, which provides sharp visuals and vivid contrast. The Xiaomi 15 Pro pushes ahead with a larger 6.73″ 1440p panel, offering superior sharpness at 522ppi, 3200 nits peak brightness, and 68 billion color rendering. It is more suitable for multimedia consumption, offering a brighter, crisper, and more color-accurate display. The Xiaomi 15 Pro is ahead in this category.

Verdict:
While the OnePlus 13T excels in portability and compact ergonomics, the Xiaomi 15 Pro offers better display quality and build durability. The latter wins this section due to its flagship-grade protection and superior screen experience.

2. Specifications

Xiaomi 15 Pro
Xiaomi 15 Pro

Performance:
Both phones run on the same Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, ensuring top-tier performance. The OnePlus 13T uses OxygenOS 15 internationally, which offers a cleaner, bloat-free UI compared to Xiaomi’s feature-rich HyperOS 2. Both have UFS 4.0 storage and identical CPU-GPU configurations, making them equally powerful on paper. However, the lighter software of the OnePlus 13T gives it a slight edge in fluidity and RAM management, especially for multitasking and gaming over time.

Battery and Charging:
OnePlus 13T features a 6260 mAh battery with 80W wired charging and support for multiple charging protocols including PPS and PD. It even includes reverse-wired charging. Xiaomi’s 6100 mAh battery is slightly smaller but supports faster 90W wired and 50W wireless charging. Its inclusion of wireless charging, especially reverse wireless, makes it far more versatile. In charging speed and flexibility, Xiaomi is more future-ready.

Verdict:
Though both offer elite-level performance, the OnePlus 13T takes the edge in software efficiency. However, Xiaomi 15 Pro dominates with charging versatility and wireless options, giving it the upper hand in overall power and charging capabilities.

3. Camera

Xiaomi 15 Pro
Xiaomi 15 Pro

Main and Secondary Lenses:
OnePlus 13T comes with a capable dual setup, including a 50 MP main and 50 MP 2x telephoto lens, which is solid but limited in versatility. Xiaomi 15 Pro, however, boasts a Leica-powered triple system with a larger main sensor, a 5x periscope telephoto, and an ultrawide lens. Its camera system is more advanced for zoom, landscapes, and low-light shots. Video capabilities are also superior with 8K recording, 10-bit HDR, and cinematic profiles. Xiaomi is the clear winner for photography enthusiasts.

Selfie Camera:
OnePlus 13T has a 16 MP front camera limited to 1080p video, which is serviceable but basic. Xiaomi’s 32 MP selfie shooter supports 4K recording and has EIS for stabilization, making it significantly better for vlogging, selfies, and video calls. The higher resolution and stabilization give Xiaomi a major advantage here.

Verdict:
Xiaomi 15 Pro outclasses the OnePlus 13T in both main and selfie camera performance. With a more versatile triple setup and superior front-facing specs, it’s the clear choice for photography and content creation.

4. Pricing

OnePlus 13T
OnePlus 13T

The OnePlus 13T is priced at approximately $440, offering flagship performance at a competitive rate. In contrast, the Xiaomi 15 Pro costs around $740, which is significantly higher. The price difference reflects Xiaomi’s more premium features such as better cameras, display, and charging. However, the OnePlus 13T delivers remarkable value for its price bracket, covering essentials with few trade-offs.

Verdict:

For budget-conscious buyers wanting top-tier specs at an affordable price, the OnePlus 13T is the better value. The Xiaomi 15 Pro justifies its higher cost with premium additions, but the price-performance ratio is in OnePlus 13T’s favor.

5. Conclusion

Xiaomi 15 Pro
Xiaomi 15 Pro

The Xiaomi 15 Pro includes standout features like two-way satellite communication, 5x periscope zoom, wireless charging, and 8K video support, features usually reserved for ultra-premium devices. It also integrates an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, a barometer, and higher-grade IP68 protection. The OnePlus 13T, while more affordable, includes “Circle to Search,” a rare Google feature, and robust support for multiple fast-charging standards. However, it lacks an ultrawide camera, wireless charging, and a flagship-level front camera. Xiaomi packs more innovation and hardware sophistication overall.

Final Verdict:

OnePlus 13T stands out as an affordable flagship alternative, delivering elite performance, solid build quality, and clean software in a compact design. It’s ideal for users who value price-to-performance and practicality. The Xiaomi 15 Pro, meanwhile, excels as a premium powerhouse with a richer camera suite, better display, and more charging options.

For users prioritizing camera versatility, display brilliance, and all-around flagship features, the Xiaomi 15 Pro is the superior device. However, the OnePlus 13T remains the smarter purchase for value-focused buyers.

OnePlus 13T vs Oppo Find X8s: Battle of the Best Small Flagship

Compact flagships are back in a big way, and both OnePlus and OPPO have just announced their latest offerings. The OnePlus 13T and the Oppo Find X8s are two sleek devices that are palm friendly, offer flagship grade performance, and premium features. But which one deserves your attention? Read on to find out.

1. Design

OnePlus 13T

Both phones take a refined approach to design, focusing on compact form factors without sacrificing a premium feel. While both models sport a 6.32-inch OLED display with a 1.5K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate, the Oppo Find X8s easily takes the win over the OnePlus 13T.

The Oppo Find X8s has a slimmer 7.73mm body that weighs 179 grams. It also offers an IP68 + IP69 rating for impressive water and dust resistance. Meanwhile, the OnePlus 13T has a chunkier 8.15mm body that has a slightly more heft of 185 grams. The IP65 rating is also a step down from the Oppo compact flagship.

2. Camera

Oppo Find X8s

The camera department is another area where the Oppo Find X8s takes a win over the OnePlus 13T. The former is simply more versatile than the latter thanks to its triple camera setup. OnePlus packs the 13T with a 50MP main camera along with a 50MP telephoto shooter with 2x optical zoom and OIS support (Optical Image Stabilization). For selfies and video calls, there is the 16MP shooter on the front.

Oppo matches this with a 50MP main and 50MP telephoto shooter as well. But it also offers a 50MP ultra wide angle lens, allowing for wider shots. The telephoto camera also offers a higher 3.5x optical zoom, which gives it an edge in magnified pictures. There is also a 32MP front facing camera.

3. Performance

Both small flagships are quite similar in terms of performance. The Snapdragon 8 Elite is one of the fastest chipsets that powers premium Android smartphones, which easily has an edge over MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400. This is the same chip that powers the OnePlus 13T. On the other hand, the Oppo Find X8s is equipped with the latest Dimensity 9400+ that offers better performance, making it nearly even in terms of performance against the Snapdragon 8 Elite.

But one area the OnePlus 13T triumphs is the battery capacity. It houses a massive 6,260mAh battery pack, which supports 80W wired fast charging. In comparison, the Find X8s has a smaller but respectable 5,700mAh cell that supports not only 80W wired but also 50W wireless fast charging.

4. Pricing and Verdict

The Oppo Find X8s has plenty of advantages over the OnePlus 13T. But all of this comes at a cost. The OnePlus 13T has a starting price tag of 3,399 Yuan (roughly 466 US Dollars). This makes it over 100 US Dollars cheaper than the Oppo Find X8S, which starts from 4,199 Yuan (roughly 576 US Dollars). So while the Find X8s is a more rounded flagship and easily recommendable, the 13T can be great for those on a tighter budget.

Nvidia May Lose Billions as Huawei Deploys Its Fastest AI Chip Under US Export Ban

Huawei might be stepping in to fill the void left by Nvidia in the Chinese market. Following the export ban from the US, Huawei officially announced the Ascend 920, which is its fastest AI chipset. The timing of the announcement is oddly coincidental and could be arriving at a big cost to Nvidia. So here’s what we know.

How the Huawei Ascend 920 AI Chip is Changing the Game

For those unaware, the United States announced stricter restrictions on the import of AI chips, which affects chipmaking giant, Nvidia. The company managed to circumvent previous regulations to sell its Nvidia H20 processors in the Chinese market. However, the latest export ban could be cracking down on this. But with AI growing exponentially in the region, Huawei’s new announcement arrives at the perfect time to fill in the gap.

As per the official announcement, the new Ascend 920 will hit mass production later this year and is based on SMIC’s 6nm process. It promises to offer up to 900 TFLOPS of BF16 compute and 4000GB/s of memory bandwidth. This chip is supported by HBM3 memory modules and will also support PCI 5.0, along with next gen interconnect protocols to help large model training. With this chip, the company could replace the Nvidia H20 by being an effective alternative.

To recall, the H20 is being used by other Chinese tech giants like Tencent and ByteDance. But after these new US restrictions, the Ascend 920 might be the next in line. The current gen Ascend 910C offers around 60 percent of the Nvidia H100’s performance, while the Ascend 920 possibly offering training efficiency by 30 to 40 percent.
