Xiaomi Mix Flip Review: Powerful with Few Compromises

In the unboxing video, I said that this Mix Filp made a very good first impression on me, with its strong 8 Gen3, nice appearance, and a very good feel in the hand, as well as the lovely outside screen. So, in this video, we will take a close look at Xiaomi’s first filp phone.

WHERE TO BUY
Buy Xiaomi Mix Filp on GeekWills from $999

Unboxing

Okay, so this phone still comes in the original black package, with the Leica brand prominently displayed. The package includes the phone, a standard 67W charger, and an A to C cable. Finally, a hard plastic white casing; do you think it looks good?

Desgin

First and foremost, the whole vibe of this Mix Filp is exceptional. We just examined the foldables from Motorola and Honor, and the Mix Filp is without a doubt the finest in terms of overall feel. If you look closely, you will see that the Mix Filp’s outer screen glass and back cover have tiny curves, giving it an extremely smooth and comfortable feel.

This outside screen measures 4.01 inches, making it the largest on the market and 0.01 inches larger than Honor and Moto. Of course, in practice, no one will notice the difference.

The idea for employing this outer screen is considerably closer to Honor’s; it can currently run over 200 apps. And, while I received the Chinese version, many major global apps have been optimized; when I use these apps, I can simply access all of their functionalities. It is more than just downsizing the screen; when I flip it, I can use a full-size keyboard and have the same typing experience as on the big screen, which is fantastic.

Have you noticed that when used vertically, there are a number of cards here that can display a music player, step counter, clock, and so on. When the screen is horizontally oriented, the calendar becomes fully dimmed.

For me, the music player is the most useful one, but not so much for other cards. I hope xiaomi can optimize it in future updates.

One thing to note is that there is a speaker on the outside screen’s side, which, when combined with an additional microphone at the pivot location, may be the only Filp phone capable of taking phone calls like this.

Coming back to the big screen, this is a 6.86-inch OLED screen with the same 1.5k level of resolution as the outer screen. The screen also has a 21.4:9 ratio, which makes it look slimmer. Ladies might like this design.

The crease that you are most concerned about is less obvious and does not differ significantly from the Honor and Moto. The one criticism I have about the device’s appearance is that it is the thickest among its competitors, both unfolded and folded.

Performance

The 8 Gen3 is without a doubt the most powerful chip filp phone can get, and in benchmarks it’s a big step up from the previous filp phones we’ve tested, so you don’t have to worry about its performance in everyday use.

I was more curious to see how it would perform in games, in the Genshin Impact test, it performed within my expectations. The poor cooling performance of the filp phone obviously doesn’t allow the 8Gen3 to run at high loads for long periods of time, and the game drops to 30fps after about 13 minutes.

In terms of temperature control and power consumption, the Mix Filp with 8Gen3 has some advantages, but the gaming experience is not much different from other filp phones, they are all very conservative. For light gaming these phones are more than capable.

Screen

The screen is the highlight of this phone, while other filp phones generally use a 1080p screen, the Mix Filp uses a 1.5k screen from TCL, which is nice and bright, with good dimming strategy, So I’m giving both screens a high score.

Camera

The Mix Filp uses a combination of a 23mm main camera plus a 47mm telephoto camera, and there is Leica support.

I took some sample shots, you can take a closer look here. After viewing these photos on my computer, I feel like it has a strong Leica style, somewhat close to the xiaomi 13 ultra and 14 ultra . Even after removing the watermark, I can tell that these photos were taken by a Xiaomi phone.

Battery&changring

The Mix Filp has a 4780mAh battery, which is definitely a big battery for a filp phone, and it’s not bad in real life use.

With 67W fast charging, it takes about 53 minutes to fully charge the battery, which unfortunately is much slower than a regular Xiaomi phone that also uses 67W fast charging.

Conclusion

Okay, Xiaomi has included some classic Xiaomi features in this Mix Filp – powerful hardware. If you want to buy the most powerful filp phone with the least amount of flaws, the Mix Filp is a fantastic option.

So, this concludes my quick review of Mix Filp, I hope you enjoyed it.

iPhone 17 Slim will have a single rear camera: Kuo

Earlier this week, a report revealed that Apple is working on a slim model for the iPhone 17 series that will replace the Plus variant. While the report outlined many possible specifications of this new phone, it left out details about the camera system. Now, renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has shed some light on this.

According to Kuo, the iPhone 17 Slim will feature just a single rear camera. If this pans out, it would be the first single-camera iPhone in the mainline series since the iPhone 8.

Kuo says Apple will “emphasize innovative form factor design” with the iPhone 17 Slim “rather than competing on hardware specifications.” In simple words, the clear focus seems to be on aesthetics and portability, compared to the standard and Pro models.

The rest of the leak largely confirms previous rumors. The iPhone 17 Slim is expected to have a 6.6-inch display with a 1260×2740 resolution. Under the hood, it will likely house the A19 chip, a step down from the A19 Pro expected in the Pro models. And the notch replacement, the Dynamic Island, will carry over from current iPhones.

However, there are some conflicting details. While earlier reports suggested that the iPhone 17 Slim would have an aluminum frame, Kuo says it will actually use titanium, though with a lower titanium content than that of the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models.

Kuo leak also diverges regarding the modem. The 17 Slim is rumored to use Qualcomm modems, but he now suggests it will feature Apple’s own in-house 5G chip. If true, we could see it in other iPhone 17 models as well.

Even though we are getting these details from reliable sources, it’s essential to treat them with caution, as details about devices this far out from release are subject to change.

Kuo also shared insights into why Apple is discontinuing the iPhone Plus model. He notes that the iPhone Plus currently accounts for only about 5% to 10% of iPhone shipments, which likely influenced the decision. This move could be a risky gamble for Apple, but it might also prove successful.

Huawei will Likely Stick with the 7nm Kirin Chips for Upcoming Mate 70 Smartphone

Reports suggest Huawei‘s upcoming Mate 70 flagship will stick with the 7nm Kirin chips (potentially the Kirin 9100 with improved transistor density using SMIC’s N+3 technology) due to the high cost and potential yield issues associated with SMIC’s attempt at 5nm production using DUV. SMIC is China’s leading chipmaker, and it is facing limitations due to US sanctions and Dutch export restrictions. Unable to access cutting-edge EUV technology, SMIC relies on older DUV machines, putting them behind rivals TSMC and Samsung Foundry.

SMIC is reportedly actively working on a 5nm process using DUV lithography

Despite the challenges, rumors indicate SMIC is actively working on a 5nm process using DUV lithography. While the energy efficiency of this approach seems promising, significant cost reduction is necessary for it to be commercially viable for Huawei.

The Mate 70’s chipset choice remains unclear. Sticking with 7nm offers a safe path, while venturing into DUV-based 5nm promises advancement but carries significant risks. SMIC’s success in refining its 5nm process will ultimately determine Huawei’s chip strategy for future flagships.

AMD to postpone the Ryzen 9000 series processors Launch until August

AMD has announced a brief delay in the launch of its highly anticipated Ryzen 9000 series processors. This decision comes after the company identified an unspecified quality issue during final product inspections.

The Ryzen 7 9700X and Ryzen 5 9600X will be available on August 8th

In a statement, AMD emphasizes its dedication to providing a high-quality experience for all Ryzen users. They have opted for a cautious approach, working with channel partners to replace the initially produced processors with units that meet their rigorous quality standards. The revised launch schedule sees a staggered release. The Ryzen 7 9700X and Ryzen 5 9600X processors will now be available on August 8th, while the higher-end Ryzen 9 9950X and Ryzen 9 9900X will launch on August 15th.

While AMD has not disclosed specifics regarding the quality concern, they have assured consumers that additional screening measures have been implemented for future Ryzen 9000 CPUs. This launch delay looks to be aimed towards quality control for the most part.

Xiaomi 14 Civi Limited Edition with Panda Design Explained

Xiaomi recently announced a limited edition variant of its popular Xiaomi 14 Civi smartphone in India, dubbed the “Panda Design.” This special edition model is set to launch on July 29th, 2024. This new offering promises a unique blend of aesthetics and premium materials, reminiscent of the previously released Civi 4 Pro Limited Edition in China.

Xiaomi 14 CIVI Limited Edition

1. Inspiration and Design

The core of the Panda Design lies in its distinctive finish. Unlike the standard Xiaomi 14 Civi, which boasts a sleek glass back, the limited edition model introduces a dual-finish concept, combining glass and vegan leather. This innovative approach not only adds a tactile dimension to the device but also creates a visually striking contrast. The color palette for the Panda Design includes Pink, Monochrome, and Blue, each offering a distinctive aesthetic appeal.

Interestingly, the color scheme of the Xiaomi 14 Civi Panda Design bears a striking resemblance to the hues offered for the Xiaomi SU7 EV. While the brand hasn’t explicitly drawn a connection between the two, the parallel is undeniable. This shared color palette suggests a potential synergy between Xiaomi’s automotive and smartphone divisions, aiming to create a cohesive brand identity.

2. Specifications and Features

Apart from the design changes, the Xiaomi 14 Civi Panda Design is expected to share the same specifications as the standard model. Xiaomi 14 Civi features a 6.55-inch OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, 1.5K resolution, and 3000 nits peak brightness.

Under the hood, it is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 SoC which promises smooth multitasking and gaming. The Xiaomi 14 Civi runs on Android 14 OS with Xiaomi’s HyperOS custom skin, offering a user-friendly interface and additional features.

The camera setup includes a 50-megapixel triple camera system on the rear, capable of capturing detailed photos and videos. On the front, a 32-megapixel shooter caters to selfies and video calls.

The phone is backed by a 4,700mAh battery with 67W wired fast charging, providing ample power to last through the day.

3. Availability and Pricing

The Xiaomi 14 Civi Panda Design is expected to be available in the top-end 12GB + 512GB storage configuration, though official pricing details are yet to be revealed. This limited edition variant will likely be priced slightly higher than the standard Xiaomi 14 Civi due to its unique design and premium materials.

The Redmi 14C has been spotted in the IMEI database and it looks like Xiaomi is preparing to officially launch this model in the near future. Previously spotted as 2409BRN2CL, the device is now officially listed as the Redmi 14C, and this is a pretty big step towards launch. This information was spotted by the XiaomiTime team.

Redmi 14C spotted in HyperOS source code & IMEI database

The Redmi 14C, “C3N”, and “C3NL” have internal model numbers, and their recent discovery makes the device that much more important. According to information contained in the HyperOS source code, the Redmi 14C was the first device found to be powered by the MediaTek Helio G81 processor. Of course, Xiaomi may have made some mistakes in the processor names.

Because the Redmi 13C was launched with the Helio G85, they may not want to use a processor named “G81” in the new model. You have to remember that this processor is based on MT6768. The smartphone can also use the processor with the name “Helio G91 Ultra”. Don’t pay much attention to the name changes. In any case, the Redmi 14C will perform the same as the Redmi 13C.

Detailed Model Numbers and Regional Variants

The Redmi 14C has been spotted in the IMEI Database with model number 2409BRN2CL and the other model numbers below also belong to the new smartphone. Also, the new Redmi 14C will be sold in the international market, India and China.

  • 2409BRN2CA
  • 2409BRN2CL
  • 2409BRN2CC

Redmi 14C will ship with Android 14-based HyperOS 1.0 out of the box. The launch date of the device is still unknown. Therefore, you will have to wait patiently.

The findings reveal that nearly half (49%) of surveyed parents report their Gen Alpha children already utilize AI tools. Interestingly, a gender gap appears in AI adoption, with 54% of parents stating their sons use these tools compared to 45% for girls.

As Gen Alpha children enter their teenage years (13-14), AI usage seems to rise significantly, with 60% of parents reporting such use. The survey also explores how AI factors into homework completion. While 20% of parents indicated their children use AI for homework assistance, 40% expressed opposition to this practice, citing concerns about potential cheating.

Despite these concerns, a majority (54%) of parents surveyed support their children’s use of AI tools. They perceive these tools as beneficial for personalized education (30%), social skills development (18%), fostering creativity (29%), and preparing children for the future (21%). Notably, the survey also identified a gender gap in parental support, with fathers surveyed displaying a higher level of support for AI tool usage (66%) compared to mothers (47%).
