OxygenOS 15 (Android 15) Will Be the Final Major Update for These OnePlus Devices

OnePlus Android 15 (OxygenOS 15) update

Android 15 is through its final stages of development as it’s nearing the platform stability phase for the final touches before it is released publicly. It will bring plenty of exciting features such as satellite connectivity, private space, app archiving, and more.

Like every year, many Android devices will reach their end of support for the major Android updates this year as well. Here, we have jotted down a list of OnePlus phones and tablets that will receive Android 15-based OxygenOS 15 as their final major upgrade.

Go through the list below to determine if you’ll need to upgrade to a newer model next year to continue receiving the latest features and enhancements.

OnePlus Devices That Won’t Get Any Major Updates After Android 15

  • OnePlus 10 Pro
  • OnePlus 10T
  • OnePlus 10R
  • OnePlus 10R 150W
  • OnePlus Nord N30 SE
  • OnePlus Nord CE 3
  • OnePlus Nord CE 3 Lite
  • OnePlus Pad Go

These devices will get the Android 15 update but it’ll be the last of such kind. They are likely to miss out on future OS upgrades post Android 15.

We have prepared this list by taking into account the software update policy for the OnePlus phones and tablets. Yes, this isn’t an official list, but it’s unlikely to change unless OnePlus makes any changes to its software update policy.

OnePlus Software Update Policy

OnePlus offers generous software support for its phones and tablets. Their high-end phones get four years of OS updates and five years of security updates. The newer Nord models, including the OnePlus Nord 3, promise 3 OS updates, while the older models get two.

The OnePlus Nord N and Nord CE series models typically get two generations of Android updates.

OnePlus had a decent software policy for its phones. However, the extended support for newer models has made it one of the best smartphone brands in terms of software update policy.

Last year, Google announced the Pixel 8 series with 7 years of Android update support, setting a new benchmark. Samsung quickly followed this up by offering the same software support for its flagship Galaxy S24 series.

OnePlus has a completely different take on providing extended software support to its devices. In an interview with Tom’s Guide, OnePlus President Kinder Liu explains, “Simply offering longer software update policies completely misses the point. It’s not just software update policies that are important to the user, it’s the fluency of your phone’s user experience too.”

So, don’t expect extended software support from OnePlus, at least not in the near future. However, four OS updates aren’t bad either, which many brands struggle to offer.

Before I wrap up this post, let’s quickly take a look at the big changes coming in Android 15.

Android 15: What’s So Exciting About It?

The new OS is confirmed to support Satellite Connectivity, allowing users to send texts even if there are no cell towers nearby. It supports SMS, MSS, as well as preloaded RCS apps. This means, it’ll not be limited to emergency uses only.

Android 15 will let users choose a default note-taking app from Settings. It can use Android’s Content Capture API to capture all or part of the screen for insertion into a note. You’ll also be able to save your favourite split-screen combination for quicker access. A shortcut will be created on the home screen to instantly open both apps in the split-screen mode.

Taking inspiration from Samsung, Android 15 adds Private Space to protect your sensitive files and apps with an additional layer of security. This is similar to the Secure Folder on Samsung phones. This new feature creates a separate space hidden from the regular space. You’ll be able to use a different Google account and a different lock screen for better security.

Google has already bought the app archiving feature via the Google Play Store. It lets your unarchive apps to save storage while keeping the user data around. It works similarly to offloading apps on iPhones. So far, this feature has been limited to apps installed from the Play Store, but Android 15 integrates this feature at the OS level, allowing archiving/restoring any apps, even those installed outside of the Play Store.

One of the essential Android 15 features is partial screen sharing. It lets you share or record a single app rather than the entire screen. There’s also a new Notification Cooldown feature that lowers the volume of successive notifications from the same app. The new OS also brings a high-quality webcam mode to improve the video quality by disabling the power optimizations. You’ll be able to enable this mode by tapping the “HQ” symbol in the webcam preview mode.

Do you consider the software update policy when getting a new smartphone? Share your thoughts on the update policy for your device in the comments below.

TSMC to receive ASML’s latest high-NA EUV lithography machines worth $380 million this year

ASML (Advanced Semiconductor Materials Lithography) is a Dutch corporation that designs and manufactures lithography machines for the semiconductor industry. The lithography machines are one of the most important equipment in chip building.

Access to ASML’s cutting-edge lithography technology is one of the reasons behind TSMC‘s massive success as a contract chip manufacturer that works with most of the big giants in the industry such as NVIDIA and Qualcomm.

The high-NA lithography technology is expected to reduce the transistor size by 66%

Now the latest news is that ASML is going to ship its most advanced lithography machine worth US$ 380 million (~2.753 billion yuan) to TSMC this year. ASML Chief Financial Officer Roger Dassen revealed in a recent conference call that the company’s two largest customers, TSMC and Intel, will obtain its high numerical aperture (high-NA) extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography technology within 2024.

Reportedly, ASML has already delivered the world’s first commercial high-NA EUV lithography machine to Intel, starting with the first unit delivered to a factory in Oregon in late December. The exact time when TSMC will get the latest and most advanced tool from ASML is unclear at this point.

The high-NA lithography technology is expected to reduce the transistor size by 66%. So, it could enable chip manufacturers to fit more of them in a same-sized piece of silicon. Obviously, there is much more than just the transistor count (such as power efficiency) when it comes to sustained performance. But the power efficiency also improves with the reduction of the size.

Reportedly, the high-NA EUV system achieves a numerical aperture of 0.55. Compared with the previous EUV systems equipped with a 0.33 numerical aperture lens, the accuracy will be improved and will enable more sophisticated patterning on the silicon.

The machine is also 30% larger than the predecessors which are already so large that they require three Boeing 747s to carry them.

Speaking of TSMC, the development of the 2nm nodes is reportedly progressing smoothly. The company has plans to start the development of N3X and N2 process in Q2 2025. Mass production of N2P and A16 will begin in Q2 2026. Its 2nm process will use Gate-all-around FETs (GAAFET).

TSMC expects its 2nm process could bring 10% to 15% performance improvement along with 25% to 30% lower power consumption.

Xiaomi Mix Fold 4 and Honor Magic V3 leaks yet another time with 5000mAh battery

A report earlier this week revealed that Xiaomi and Honor are both working on their new book-style foldable phones. Xiaomi’s offering, the Mix Fold 4, and Honor’s, the Magic V3, are expected to be powered by the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip

The report also tipped Mix Fold 4’s battery to be 5000mAh, while details regarding the Magic V3’s battery capacity were left undisclosed. But there was a subtle hint suggesting an even bigger battery for the V3.

However, in a recent Weibo post tipster Digital Chat Station revealed that Honor’s foldable will also feature a 5000mAh battery, matching the Mix Fold 4.

Currently, the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro holds the title for the foldable with the largest battery, boasting a massive 5700mAh cell despite its slim design.  It looks like it will hold onto that crown for a while longer.

Additionally, the tipster revealed that both foldables will retain side-mounted fingerprint sensors from their predecessors but will be thinner. The Mix Fold 4 is expected to be the slimmest foldable upon release, supported by the latest leak.

Furthermore, the tipster affirmed previously disclosed camera details for the Fold 4, featuring a 50MP quad-camera setup with a 5x periscope lens. However, DCS notes that the camera bulge on Xiaomi’s foldable is quite noticeable, while the Honor Magic V3 is expected to have a centrally aligned camera setup with minimal bulge.

In addition to book-style foldables, both brands are working on flip foldables. Honor has already announced the launch of its first clamshell device, the Magic V Flip, scheduled for June 20, while Xiaomi is yet to share details on its flip phone.

Both Xiaomi Mix Fold 4 and Honor Magic V3 are expected to be released in July. Xiaomi might tag along its flip phone with the Fold 4.

Vivo V40 surfaces in official-looking renders with Zeiss-branded cameras

The Vivo V family is about to get some new members globally. The Vivo V40 and V40 Pro are expected to arrive soon, and the former has now appeared in official-looking renders, accompanied by key specs.

If you remember the design of the V30, you’ll notice that the V40 looks nothing like its predecessor. The rear panel now houses a large, oval-shaped camera module with smaller circular housing for dual camera sensors, prominently branded with Zeiss.

Below the main camera setup is another oval cutout containing Vivo’s signature Aura light and an additional sensor whose purpose remains unclear. The renders show the phone in two colors: purple and grey/silver.

The front of the phone retains the curved-edge display, minimal bezels, and centered punch-hole cutout seen on the V30.

As for the specifications, the Vivo V40 is rumored to feature a 6.78-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels. The phone will likely be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chipset, similar to the V30, paired with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.

The camera setup is expected to be similar to the V30 as well. The Vivo V40 may include a 50MP primary sensor, a 50MP ultra-wide lens, and a 50MP front-facing camera for selfies.

A notable upgrade might be in the battery life. The Vivo V40 is rumored to have a 5,500mAh battery with support for 80W fast charging, an improvement over the V30’s 5,000mAh battery. Standard connectivity options include dual-SIM support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC, GPS, and a USB Type-C port.

On the software side, the Vivo V40 is expected to run on the latest Android 14 operating system out of the box. It is also expected to have an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance.

Redmi K80 Pro to have a glass back and 120W charging, says tipster

Redmi launched the K70 series smartphone in November last year, so we can expect the K80 series to launch around the same time this year. We’ve been hearing about possible upgrades for these new phones for a while.

A report earlier this week revealed that the Redmi K80 Pro will introduce some impressive upgrades, including the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 processor, a 2K display, and a 50MP telephoto lens.

Today’s leak from Digital Chat Station supports these rumors, adding that the K80 Pro will also support 120W fast charging that will complement the previously tipped 5500mAh battery.

The leak further hints that the phone will feature a metal frame and a glass back with a new coating for a more premium look and feel.

The standard Redmi K80 is not expected to lag in performance either. Previous reports suggest it will be equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, keeping it competitive in the high-end segment.

Both the Pro and standard models are rumored to sport a flat OLED display with a 2K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. The main difference might be in the camera department, with the K80 Pro possibly featuring a dedicated telephoto lens, which the standard K80 might lack.

While launch details remain unconfirmed, it appears the Xiaomi 15 series will be the first to market with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 SoC, rumored for an October launch.

The Redmi K80 series is expected to follow sometime in November. It will be an alternative for those seeking a flagship experience without the likely higher price tag of the Xiaomi 15 series.

Should You Wait For Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6?

Samsung‘s Galaxy Z Flip series has been a leader in the foldable phone market, offering a unique clamshell design and cutting-edge technology. With the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 6 expected to be revealed in July 2024, many users are wondering what upgrades and features to expect. This article will delve into the rumors and leaks surrounding the Z Flip 6, helping you decide whether to wait for the new model or snag a current Galaxy Z Flip 5.

Galaxy Z Fold 6 Flip 6 Render

1. Design and Durability

The design language of the Z Flip 6 is expected to remain similar to its predecessor, the Z Flip 5, sporting a sleek clamshell form factor. However, some hints point towards a possible shift towards a boxier aesthetic, similar to the Galaxy S24 Ultra. This could translate to sharper corners and a more squared-off look compared to the Z Flip 5’s softer curves.

Rumors suggest Samsung might be implementing a slimmer hinge mechanism while maintaining the IPX8 water resistance rating. Moreover, there will be less visible crease on the display.

The display is expected to retain the latest Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 for protection. Samsung could expand its color offerings, giving users more options to customize their look. The phone might come in seven colors: Crafted Black, Light Blue, Mint, Peach, Silver Shadow, White, and Yellow.

2. Display

The flip phone is expected to retain the same 3.4-inch folder icon-shaped cover display. The Flip 5 had a 60Hz cover display, but this time the device might feature a 120Hz refresh rate, making interactions smoother and more responsive. The main display is rumored to remain at 6.7 inches with FHD+ resolution and adaptive 1-120Hz refresh rate.

3. Performance and Battery

Under the hood, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 is rumored to pack the powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, ensuring snappy performance and efficient multitasking. It might also come with a RAM upgrade, potentially offering a 12GB option alongside the standard 8GB for even smoother operation.

One area where the Z Flip 6 could see a significant improvement is battery life. Leaks suggest a 4,000mAh battery, a notable upgrade from the Z Flip 5’s 3,700mAh battery. This would address one of the main criticisms of previous models, providing users with longer usage times on a single charge.

4. Camera

The camera system of the Z Flip 6 is also expected to get a boost. Rumors suggest a new 50MP main sensor, a substantial upgrade from the 12MP sensor found in the Z Flip 5. This would likely result in improved image quality, especially in low-light conditions.

The secondary ultrawide camera and the selfie camera are expected to remain the same. However, we can anticipate Samsung’s software enhancements to optimize image processing and offer new camera features. While the camera layout remains horizontal, rumors suggest the phone will accentuate the camera bump with the device’s chosen color.

5. Software and Other Features

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 will likely ship with Android 14 and Samsung’s One UI 6.1.1 software, providing a user-friendly and feature-rich experience. It might also receive the same seven years of software updates that Samsung promised for its flagship Galaxy S series.

Additionally, the Z Flip 6 is expected to retain the stereo speakers and a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. While features like Wi-Fi 7 might be missing, Samsung will likely focus on refining existing features and delivering a polished foldable experience.

6. Should You Wait for the Galaxy Z Flip 6?

Whether you should wait for the Galaxy Z Flip 6 depends on your current needs and preferences. If you’re already a Z Flip 5 user and satisfied with its performance, the upgrade might not be a must-have. However, if you’re looking for a foldable phone with better battery life, and enhanced camera capabilities, the Z Flip 6 could be a compelling option.

The improved battery life would address a common concern with foldable phones, providing more freedom for extended use without worrying about running out of power.

The upgraded 50MP main camera could be a significant draw for photography enthusiasts. While the Z Flip 5’s camera is decent, the increased megapixels would offer greater flexibility for cropping and zooming, potentially rivaling traditional flagship phones in image quality.

Ultimately, the decision to wait or not comes down to individual priorities. If the rumored improvements align with your needs and preferences, waiting for the Galaxy Z Flip 6 might be worthwhile. However, if you’re looking for a foldable phone right now, the Z Flip 5 is still an excellent device with a unique form factor and innovative features.

As always, it’s recommended to wait for official announcements and reviews before making a final decision. Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy Z Flip 6 in July 2024, so stay tuned for more information and hands-on experiences to determine if it’s the right foldable phone for you.

Nothing unveiled the Nothing Phone (2) in July 2023, leading to speculation that the Phone (3) will debut in the same month this year. In a video message, Nothing founder and CEO Carl Pei discussed the company’s plans for introducing AI features on its devices and hinted at the Phone (3)’s arrival.

Carl Pei reveals AI integration on Nothing Phone (3)

Nothing Phone AI-

Carl Pei shared his thoughts on the current state of artificial intelligence and its integration with consumer technology. He acknowledged the significant attention AI has garnered, noting that while some of the developments are impressive, others can be confusing.

Pei emphasized that smartphones would continue to be the primary platform for consumer AI, citing the vast user base of over 4 billion and the annual shipment of more than 1 billion smartphones as evidence of their enduring relevance. He pointed out that the way we use smartphones needs a major overhaul, as the current user experience has remained largely unchanged for over a decade.

He envisions a future where smartphones offer a highly personalized, dynamic, and cross-device interface that fosters a more human connection with technology, making interactions feel more natural and intuitive.

Pei said that for the past two months, the Nothing team has been working on designing and prototyping AI interactions. He shared some initial concepts to illustrate their vision, with plans to introduce these innovations gradually, starting with the Phone (3) next year. So, this seems to be a good hint that the Phone (3) won’t be launching this year.

Since its launch, Nothing has focused on building comprehensive capabilities and has successfully established itself as a notable player in the smartphone industry, being the only company to do so in the past decade. Pei highlighted the company’s commitment to a creative culture that prioritizes exceptional user experiences and thoughtful integration of software and hardware. With stability and solid growth plans in place, Nothing is ready to advance further and make significant contributions to the consumer AI landscape.

YouTube Updates its Firearms Policy, Age-restricts Gun-related Content to Viewers 18 and Older

YouTube has quietly updated its firearms policy to restrict certain gun-related content. Here’s the gist: Starting June 18th, videos featuring homemade or automatic firearms, along with certain firearm accessories, will be age-restricted to viewers 18 and older. Tutorials on removing safety devices from firearms are completely banned, regardless of age.

The prohibitions apply only to real-world firearms, not games or movies

According to YouTube, these changes aim to adapt their policies to the evolving online landscape. The increased availability of 3D printing, for example, prompted them to expand restrictions on homemade firearm content.

It’s important to note that these prohibitions only apply to real-world firearms, not video games, movies, or other artistic content. Exceptions may also be made for educational content deemed to be in the public interest, such as military training footage, news reports, or warzone videos.

This update comes after a watchdog group, the Tech Transparency Project (TTP), raised concerns last year about YouTube’s algorithm recommending violent gun-related content, including weapon modification tutorials, to underage users. Their investigation involved creating child accounts and monitoring their recommendations after watching popular video game videos.

The TTP applauds the update but emphasizes the importance of robust enforcement. While they view it as a step in the right direction, they question the delay and highlight the need for strong content moderation to ensure these new policies effectively protect younger viewers from potentially harmful gun-related content.

Honor Magic V Flip’s massive cover display offers dual-screen experience

On June 13, Honor will unveil the Magic V Flip in China. Ahead of the launch, the brand is busy revealing key details about the device. The company recently took to its Weibo account to release a teaser video to highlight new features of the Honor Magic V Flip’s cover screen.

Honor Magic V Flip’s cover display officially teased

The video showcases the Magic V Flip’s external screen, touted as the “largest in the industry,” which allows users to directly open commonly used applications without unfolding the device. These apps include maps, short videos, social communications, and food delivery services.

What’s particularly interesting about the display is that around 35 percent of the external screen functions independently to display items such as time and notifications, as shown in the images below. The remaining portion seemingly allows users to run apps in an aspect ratio similar to the main display.

To recall, the Find N3 Flip, which debuted last year, featured a 22:9 aspect ratio display on the inside, while its cover screen offered a 17:9 aspect ratio. The outer screen could mimic the taller aspect ratio of the internal screen. This facilitated a smoother transition between the two screens, allowing apps optimized for the internal screen’s aspect ratio to function comfortably on the cover screen. However, while the Find N3 Flip offered a cover screen with a high aspect ratio, the area under the camera module remained unutilized.

The Magic V Flip offers a dual-screen experience on its cover display, making it the best implementation of the cover screen compared to other flip-style foldable phones with large cover displays. Since it allows users to do many things on the outer screen, it reduces the need to open and use the main screen unless really required, such as for more complex tasks or larger viewing areas.

On the specs front, the Magic V Flip is expected to arrive with 12 GB of RAM, 256 GB / 512 GB / 1 TB storage options, a 4,800mAh battery with 66W fast charging, and a 50-megapixel main camera with OIS support. It will be sold in black, white, and pink shades. There will be a limited-edition variant offering 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage.
