<p>While telecom companies have yet to finalize the rollout of 5G connectivity, China is already leading the next advancement in the wireless technology space. China Mobile, a state-owned Chinese enterprise, has recently announced the commercial launch of its 5.5G network.</p>

<p>But what exactly is 5.5G, and how is it different from the standard 5G network? This post has everything you need to know about 5.5G.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-center"><strong>Also Read:</strong> <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/03/30/xiaomi-14-ultra-achieves-5-gbps-mobile-network-speed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Xiaomi 14 Ultra achieves 5 Gbps mobile network speed with 5.5G</a></p>

<h2>What Is 5.5G and How Is It Better Than 5G?</h2>

<p>Simply put, 5.5G is the advanced version of the 5G network. It’s also known as 5G-Advanced or 5GA.</p>

<p class="has-background" style="background-color:#ffedbd"><strong>Did You Know:</strong><br>The 4G LTE network that exists today is nothing but the advanced version of the 4G connectivity with better speed and latency. It’s also known as 4.5G or 4G-Advanced.</p>

<p>4.5G is built upon the standard 4G network. Similarly, 5.5G also uses the standard 5G network, but the improvements it brings to the latency and speed are significant.</p>

<p>The 5.5G network promises big improvements over the standard 5G network. It can offer a download speed of up to 10Gbps, and the upload speed can reach up to 1Gbps.</p>

<p>While 5G has nearly satisfied smartphone needs by offering better download and upload speeds, it has failed to make a bold impact in the industrial space, where applications need lower latency, super-fast uploads, extra security, reliable performance, and lower power consumption, among other things.</p>

<p>5.5G could bridge those gaps and will serve as a crucial link towards 6G.</p>

<p>Now, you might be wondering when this new network technology will roll out and if I will have to get a new device to test it out. Check out the next section below for answers.</p>

<h2>5.5G Rollout and Supported Devices</h2>

<p>China Mobile is the first to announce the 5.5G rollout. According to the telecom giant,&nbsp; it will cover more than 300 cities with its 5.5G network by the end of this year.</p>

<p>No other telecom company has announced its 5.5G rollout plans, as I write this post. We’ll have to wait and see when it starts rolling out outside China. Notably, AT&amp;T President Chris Samber expressed excitement for 5.5G a couple of months back, but we are not looking at it before 2025.</p>

<p>While it’s too early to say if all 5G smartphones will support 5.5G, one thing for sure is that not everyone will require a new phone.&nbsp; Recently, Pete Lau, OPPO’s Product Chief Officer, posted a teaser showing the OPPO Find X7 Ultra displaying “5GA” in its status bar.</p>

<p>There’s a related Weibo post suggesting that the vanilla Oppo Find X7 will also gain 5.5G capability. This makes <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/03/28/china-mobile-launches-5-5g-oppo-find-x7-support/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">OPPO Find X7 series</a> the world’s first phones to support the 5.5G network.</p>

<p>The Find X7 Ultra has the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset at its core, which is also found inside the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, OnePlus 12, and Xiaomi 14 series. Vivo X100 Pro and OPPO Find X7 powered by the Dimensity 9300 chipset are also confirmed to receive the 5.5G support. That means 5.5G should at least be supported by devices powered by any of these two chipsets.</p>

<p>As per latest reports, the <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/oppo-find-x7-ultra">OPPO Find X7 Ultra</a> just got a big upgrade with the latest software update (PHY110_14.0.1.512/CN01). This update brings support for the next generation of mobile network technology – 5.5G, also known as 5G-Advanced. This development comes shortly after <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/china">China </a>Mobile&#8217;s official launch of its 5G-A (5.5G) network on March 28th. As <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/03/28/china-mobile-launches-5-5g-oppo-find-x7-support/">covered here previously</a>, the OPPO Find X7 series holds the distinction of being the first phone lineup to support this tech across all its models. </p>

<h3>5.5G is more of an advanced version of 5G networking, with higher peak download speeds.</h3>

<p>What exactly is 5.5G? It represents a crucial step towards 6G, offering a significant leap in network capabilities compared to traditional <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/5g">5G</a>. We&#8217;re talking a 10-fold improvement in speed, latency, connection capacity, and energy efficiency. Here&#8217;s a breakdown of what to expect:</p>

<ul><li>Peak download speeds reaching 10 Gigabits per second</li><li>Ultra-low latency in the millisecond range</li><li>Massive connectivity for up to 100 billion IoT devices</li><li>Integration with aerospace technology</li></ul>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/OPPO-Find-X7-5.5G-1-1024x576.png?x44794" alt="OPPO Find X7 5.5G" class="wp-image-614449" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/OPPO-Find-X7-5.5G-1-1024x576.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/OPPO-Find-X7-5.5G-1-300x169.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/OPPO-Find-X7-5.5G-1-768x432.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/OPPO-Find-X7-5.5G-1-696x392.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/OPPO-Find-X7-5.5G-1-1068x601.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/OPPO-Find-X7-5.5G-1-747x420.png 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/OPPO-Find-X7-5.5G-1.png 1280w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>The race for 5.5G deployment is heating up, with all three major Chinese carriers vying for dominance. While the OPPO Find X7 series takes the lead, other phone manufacturers are expected to follow suit. These include the <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/vivo-x-fold-3">vivo X Fold3</a> series, <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/iqoo-12">iQOO 12 series</a>, and <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi-14-ultra">Xiaomi 14 Ultra</a>. Interestingly, Honor claims its entire Magic6 series is already compatible with 5.5G networks, although it lacks the official 5G-A branding.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter"><img src="https://img.ithome.com/newsuploadfiles/2024/4/c5efc6a6-b583-4168-a38a-005a9420c74e.png?x-bce-process=image/quality,q_75/format,f_webp" alt=""/></figure></div>

<p>The initial rollout of 5.5G network coverage will target 100 major cities across China, including Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan and others. With 5.5G promising unparalleled speed, responsiveness, and connectivity, it&#8217;s an exciting time to be a mobile phone user in China.</p>

<p>The race for next-generation mobile connectivity heats up as Xiaomi joins <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/oppo/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">OPPO</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/vivo/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Vivo</a> in <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/03/28/china-mobile-launches-5-5g-oppo-find-x7-support/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">embracing 5.5G technology</a>. According to a recent tip from Digital Chat Station, Xiaomi is preparing to roll out 5.5G upgrades via OTA (Over-the-Air) updates, potentially for devices powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. China Mobile also recently <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/03/30/xiaomi-14-ultra-achieves-5-gbps-mobile-network-speed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tested the Xiaomi 14 Ultra</a>, achieving speeds of up to 5132 Mbps.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="952" height="229" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/image-181.png?x44794" alt="Xiaomi 5.5G Coming Soon DCS" class="wp-image-614927" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/image-181.png 952w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/image-181-300x72.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/image-181-768x185.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/image-181-696x167.png 696w" sizes="(max-width: 952px) 100vw, 952px" /></figure></div>

<h2>5.5G Upgrades on the Horizon</h2>

<p>5.5G, also known as 5G-A, acts as a bridge between current 5G networks and the future of 6G. It promises significant improvements – tenfold increases in download speeds exceeding tens of gigabits per second, lower latency, improved positioning, and better network reliability compared to its predecessor.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Xiaomi-5.5G-1024x576.png?x44794" alt="Xiaomi 5.5G" class="wp-image-614929" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Xiaomi-5.5G-1024x576.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Xiaomi-5.5G-300x169.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Xiaomi-5.5G-768x432.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Xiaomi-5.5G-696x392.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Xiaomi-5.5G-1068x601.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Xiaomi-5.5G-747x420.png 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Xiaomi-5.5G.png 1280w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>Most smartphones equipped with the latest <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/snapdragon-8-gen-3/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Snapdragon 8 Gen 3</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/dimensity-9300/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dimensity 9300</a> processors are capable of supporting 5.5G. This news comes on the heels of OPPO announcing full 5.5G support for its Find X7 series, and Vivo revealing their initial lineup of compatible devices.</p>

<h2>Patent Hints at Connected Car Future</h2>

<p>Beyond mobile phones, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/xiaomi/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Xiaomi</a> seems to be setting its sights on the future of connected cars. A recent patent application discovered by Tianyancha hints at Xiaomi&#8217;s interest in vehicle-to-satellite communication. This technology could potentially optimize the quality and reliability of satellite communication in Xiaomi cars, offering features like improved navigation and emergency response capabilities. However, details still need to be made clear about whether this functionality will be integrated into future Xiaomi models or available as an upgrade for the recently launched <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/03/28/xiaomi-su7-official-launch-details/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Xiaomi SU7</a>.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="600" height="600" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Xiaomi-Satellite-Communication-Patent.jpg?x44794" alt="Xiaomi Satellite Communication Patent" class="wp-image-614930" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Xiaomi-Satellite-Communication-Patent.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Xiaomi-Satellite-Communication-Patent-300x300.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Xiaomi-Satellite-Communication-Patent-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Xiaomi-Satellite-Communication-Patent-420x420.jpg 420w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure></div>

<p>The concept of satellite-connected cars isn&#8217;t entirely new. Geely Holding, a Chinese automaker, recently launched 11 low-earth orbit satellites through its subsidiary Geespace. These satellites are part of the &#8220;Geely Future Mobility Constellation&#8221; network, aimed at integrating communication, navigation, and remote sensing for driverless cars.</p>

<p>Geely&#8217;s car models, including the Zeekr 001 FR and Zeekr 007, come equipped with in-built satellite communication functionality, enabling high-precision positioning and connectivity with consumer electronics products. The satellites also offer AI remote sensing capabilities, providing high-resolution imaging data. Geely aims to have 72 satellites in orbit by 2025, with plans to reach a total of 240 satellites in the constellation.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/huawei/">Huawei</a> is currently developing 5.5G technology, the next step after 5G, which aims to comprehensively enhance network connectivity and move away from connectivity-based development to full-service enablement. Huawei is collaborating with industry partners to advance towards an intelligent world.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="507" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Huawei-5.5G-1024x507.png?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-521347" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Huawei-5.5G-1024x507.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Huawei-5.5G-300x148.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Huawei-5.5G-768x380.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Huawei-5.5G-1536x760.png 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Huawei-5.5G-696x344.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Huawei-5.5G-1068x528.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Huawei-5.5G-849x420.png 849w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Huawei-5.5G-324x160.png 324w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Huawei-5.5G.png 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>At Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona 2023, Huawei unveiled a full series of One 5G solutions capable of driving all bands to 5G. This development of better 5G, Huawei calls the technology – 5.5G. John Gao, head of the 5.5G domain development at <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/huawei/">Huawei</a> noted that among the new service trends driven by the new standard was a shift in communications being content.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.huawei.com/tz/media-center/multimedia/videos/2023/5point5g-mwc23">Huawei believes that this new technology</a> has the power to transform and digitize many different industries. The company predicts that 5.5G will vastly outperform 5G in many aspects such as cutting down the cost-per-bit of eMBB by ten times and delivering higher uplink capabilities using UCBC to meet the requirements of eighty per cent of ToB scenarios.</p>

<p>However, Huawei has been facing significant challenges due to <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/03/07/huawei-and-zte-banned-from-german-5g-networks/">global trade restrictions imposed on them</a>. The <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/03/03/huawei-usa-export-ban/">U.S. crackdown has cut off</a> the company’s access to essential supplies. Huawei’s global supply chain is being put under intense pressure.</p>

<p>Despite these challenges, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/huawei/">Huawei</a> remains committed to evolving their technology and pushing forward with their development of 5.5G. The company believes that this new technology will bring many benefits and advancements in the field of telecommunications.</p>

<p>It remains to be seen how these trade restrictions will affect <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/huawei/">Huawei’s</a> ability to develop and implement their 5.5G technology on a global scale. However, the Chinese tech giant remains optimistic and determined to overcome these challenges.</p>
