Xiaomi has this annoying tradition of under-clocking the processors on some variants of its flagships. The Xiaomi Mi 5 and Mi 5s are fresh examples. The base version of the former is clocked at 1.8GHz instead of 2.15GHz and the Mi 5s is clocked at 2.15GHz unlike the Mi 5s Plus that is clocked at 2.35GHz. You should then understand our joy when we learnt no such thing would happen with the Xiaomi Mi 6.

That joy soon turned to disappointment when we saw that the Adreno 540 GPU was listed as under-clocked on the Mi 6 product page. Instead of the standard 710MHz, the GPU speed was written as 653MHz. However, Weibo user @Fertile was able to confirm that the Mi 6 indeed reaches the 710MHz clockspeed even almost 800MHz when he benchmarked it on GFXBench.

If you head to the product page now, Xiaomi has modified the info and has changed the Adreno 540′ GPU clockspeed to 710MHz for all variants of the Mi 6. We still don’t know what prompted the lower clockspeed but we are glad Mi 6 owners will be getting the best out of Qualcomm’s new chip.

After the Xiaomi Mi 6 was launched a controversy over the Snapdragon 835 processor emerged. In Xiaomi’s official website, the Snapdragon 835 chip onboard the Mi 6 was listed to feature an Adreno 540 GPU with a clock frequency of 653MHz. Whereas, the official Qualcomm listing for the SD 835 pegged the GPU frequency at 710MHz. This, thus, fuel speculations that the Mi 6 comes with a Snapdragon 835 chip with reduced frequency.

This question has remained unanswered since then but a Weibo user has shared a GFXBench result that shows that the Xiaomi Mi 6 was able to attain a GPU frequency of 710MHz and was even able to surpass that up to 800MHz. One wonders what sort of lapse could have caused this reduced GPU listed. Is Xiaomi trying to play safe? Perhaps, an official statement might emerge soon. As a recap, the Xiaomi Mi 6 features a 5.15-inch 1080p display and is powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 835 chipset backed by just 6GB of RAM on all versions. There is 64GB storage version, as well as a higher 128GB version. Both versions are expandable. The device uses a curved glass body with a metal fuselage and also comes with an anti-splash body.

The Mi 6 also comes with a dual camera setup at the rear consisting of a 12MP main sensor and 12MP telephoto sensor. It runs MIUI 8 based on Android 7.0 Nougat and has a 3350mAh battery under its hood. The device is available in Blue, Black, White, Silver and Ceramic options. As far as the prices go, the Mi 6 will start at ¥2499 ($363) for the 64GB model and  ¥2899 ($421) for the 128GB version. The special edition with a ceramic body and 128GB of storage will be sold for ¥2299 ($435).

Qualcomm has announced via its Weibo page that it will unveil the Snapdragon 835 at an event in Beijing on the 22nd of March. The event is expected to be the Asian debut of the new mobile chip. We have also learnt that Qualcomm will have a working prototype of the chip on display.

The Snapdragon 835 is built using the 10nm node process and features eight custom Kryo 280 cores and a Hexagon 690 DSP. Four of these cores are clocked at 2.45GHz and the remaining four are clocked at 1.9GHz. The new chipset also has an integrated Adreno 540 GPU.

Qualcomm says the new chip features a new X16 LTE modem that offers up to 1 gigabit download speeds, the first for a mobile processor. The Snapdragon 835 is 50% smaller but has improved power consumption by 60%. It also features Quick Charge 4.0 which has an improved efficiency of 30% over Quick Charge 3.0.

The Snapdragon 835 will be present in the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+, the Sony Xperia XZ Premium, and the Xiaomi Mi 6. Samsung has already announced that it will launch its new flagship on the 29th of March in new York.

It is no longer news that Qualcomm’s chips offer the best performance when it comes to graphics. Other chips may outperform them in other areas but not when it comes to graphics.

The phone used for the test is unknown but from the device info we can see it has a 5.9” Quad HD display, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, a 20MP rear camera that can record 4K videos, a 12MP selfie camera that also records 4K videos, runs Android Nougat, and most important of all, has an octa-core Snapdragon 835 SoC clocked at 2.2GHz.

The SD 835 uses an Adreno 540 GPU and its performance is compared against the Kirin 960’s ARM Mali-G71.

Some of the GPU tests include Manhattan 3.1 where the Adreno 540 scores 2571 frames (45.1 Fps) compared to the Kirin’s 1528 frames (24.6 Fps). In the Manhattan test, Qualcomm’s GPU achieves 3839 frames (61.9 Fps) against the 2090 frames (33.7 Fps) scored by Huawei’s chip. And lastly, in the T-Rex test, the SD 835 scores 6435 frames (115.2 Fps), trumping the Kirin 960’s 4059 frames (72.5 Fps).

Qualcomm has really done well with this chip but since we all know the cat-and-mouse game that goes on when it comes to processors, we expect Huawei to unveil a new chip that offers the same performance right about the time Qualcomm is announcing an upgraded version of the Snapdragon 835.
