A strange online shopping case in India is making the rounds after a buyer expecting a high-end NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 ended up with something completely different. Instead of a graphics card worth ₹2,99,995.00, the box reportedly contained a packet of laundry detergent.

The incident was shared on Reddit by user void_SW, who was helping a friend, Harsh Raj, an IIT BHU student. The order was placed on March 10 for a GIGABYTE RTX 5090 WINDFORCE OC 32G through Amazon India, listed under the Fulfilled by Amazon program. Delivery happened on March 14, and at first, nothing seemed obviously wrong with the outer packaging.

That changed once they opened the box. Inside, there was no GPU. Just bubble wrap and a 1kg pack of Ghadi detergent. The packaging itself also raised some questions, with signs that it may have been tampered with. One small detail that stood out was the listed weight. The shipment showed up as 1.56 kg, which doesn’t quite line up with what you’d expect from a large, triple-fan GPU box.

They reportedly shared raw, uncut, high-resolution unboxing footage with timestamps and other details with Amazon while raising the complaint. Still, after about a week, the claim was denied.

What makes this a bit more concerning is that similar complaints have started appearing in reviews tied to the same seller. Some buyers are claiming they received unrelated items instead of what they ordered. It’s not entirely clear where things went wrong here, but the pattern has caught attention.

A similar case I faced

I ran into something similar back in January when I ordered a laptop from Amazon India. The product itself was the correct model, but the packaging raised concerns right away. The brand seal was already broken, and the usual “Package ID” system meant to ensure tamper-proof delivery wasn’t actually attached to the box. Instead, it was shown separately by the delivery personnel.

He insisted this was totally normal and asked me to check the laptop, but it wouldn’t turn on. Since it was a cash-on-delivery order, I chose to cancel it on the spot. Cases like these, along with recent reports, are a reminder to be extra cautious when buying expensive items online, or at least consider checking offline options first.

Leaked internal emails indicate that Amazon-owned Ring may be planning to expand its AI-powered camera network far beyond its current use cases, raising fresh concerns about large-scale neighborhood surveillance.

According to emails obtained by 404 Media, Ring founder Jamie Siminoff told employees that the company’s controversial “Search Party” feature was introduced “first for finding dogs,” but could eventually evolve into technology aimed at reducing crime across neighborhoods. Search Party launched in October as an on-by-default feature that connects Ring cameras within a local area and uses AI to identify lost pets, effectively creating a shared detection network across participating homes.

“This is by far the most innovative that we have launched in the history of Ring,” Siminoff wrote in an email to staff shortly after the feature’s rollout. He added that the underlying system could become a key part of Ring’s long-term mission, describing a future where the company might help “zero out crime in neighborhoods” through AI-enabled tools.

The feature drew backlash during the Super Bowl after Ring promoted the concept in an advertisement. Critics argued that technology capable of scanning for lost animals could easily be repurposed for broader surveillance, particularly given Ring’s history of partnerships with police departments across the United States.

Recent product launches appear to reinforce those concerns. Ring has introduced “Familiar Faces,” a facial recognition feature designed to identify known individuals captured on cameras, as well as “Fire Watch,” which uses AI to alert users about nearby fires. While these tools are marketed as safety features, privacy advocates warn they could contribute to an increasingly interconnected surveillance ecosystem.

Additional emails obtained by 404 Media also highlight Ring’s growing law enforcement integrations. The company launched a “Community Requests” feature in September, allowing police to request footage directly from camera owners through a partnership with public safety technology firm Axon. Siminoff described the feature internally as “foundational” to Ring’s mission of making neighborhoods safer.

In response to the reports, a Ring spokesperson said the company focuses on providing context about local events such as lost pets or fires and emphasized that footage sharing remains optional. The spokesperson also stated that Search Party does not process human biometrics or track individuals.

Despite those assurances, the leaked emails suggest Ring’s ambitions may extend well beyond pet recovery, potentially reshaping how residential surveillance technology is used in the future.

Big-ticket smartphone orders always come with a bit of excitement — and a bit of anxiety — but one Bengaluru buyer’s Diwali week surprise turned into something far stranger than anyone could have expected. What was supposed to be a brand-new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 ended up being… a piece of floor tile. And the only reason the buyer isn’t out $2,000 today is because he recorded the unboxing from start to finish.

The incident came to light through NDTV journalist Deepak Bopanna, who shared details of the incident on X. According to the report, the customer, an engineer based in Bengaluru, had ordered the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and paid the full amount upfront via credit card. The Amazon parcel arrived with factory-style packaging intact. Even the Fold 7’s retail box appeared completely sealed.

But when he tore open the box — all while filming the unboxing — the phone-shaped package revealed nothing but a tile placed where the $2,000 smartphone should have been.

The footage turned out to be crucial. With an unboxing video as evidence, Amazon quickly issued a full refund and initiated a detailed investigation into the supply chain to figure out where the scam occurred. The buyer also filed a complaint with local police, who have begun their own probe into the matter.

It’s a rare case, but not unheard of — and it highlights the growing trend of high-value delivery scams, where fake or swapped products are slipped into authentic-looking packaging. Had the customer not recorded the unboxing, resolving the issue could have taken weeks or even months, with no guarantee of reimbursement.

The takeaway is simple: whenever you’re accepting an expensive delivery — whether it’s a phone, laptop, or luxury item — record the unboxing from the moment you receive the parcel.

Amazon has started selling the Echo Dot Max and Echo Studio, two new smart speakers that were unveiled last month. Both devices are built for Alexa+, Amazon’s next-generation AI assistant designed to hold more natural conversations, understand context, and complete daily tasks more efficiently.

Powered by New Custom Chips

At the heart of these new Echo speakers are Amazon’s latest AZ3 and AZ3 Pro processors. These chips come with an integrated AI Accelerator that allows Alexa+ to handle more advanced AI functions directly on the device, improving speed and reducing dependence on cloud processing.

Amazon has introduced its latest Kindle Scribe lineup. It includes a redesigned Kindle Scribe with and without a front light, and the first-ever color Kindle Scribe. The devices are built for productivity, with a slimmer and lighter design, improved display technology, and new AI-powered tools.

The new Kindle Scribe is 5.4mm thick, weighs 400g, and is 40 percent faster for writing and page turns. It comes with an 11-inch glare-free display that matches the size of a sheet of paper. The screen is designed for reading, note-taking, and reviewing full-size documents. The front light system uses miniaturized LEDs placed close to the display for uniform lighting and narrower bezels. The texture-molded glass adds friction for the pen, and the reworked display stack reduces parallax to nearly zero, making writing feel natural. A quad-core chip, increased memory, and Oxide display technology improve speed and performance.

The Kindle Scribe Colorsoft adds color writing with a design similar to the standard model. It uses Colorsoft display technology with a color filter, light guide, and nitride LEDs to create soft colors that do not strain the eyes. A new rendering engine enhances colors while keeping writing smooth and natural. It also delivers weeks of battery life and does not include distracting apps or notifications.

New productivity tools include an AI-powered notebook, Quick Notes, AI search with summaries, and cloud support through Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive. Users can export notes to OneNote, send documents to Alexa+, and work with 10 pen colors, 5 highlighter colors, and a shading tool for gradient effects. A workspace feature organizes books, notebooks, and documents.

Reading features now include Story So Far, which gives spoiler-free summaries, and Ask this Book, which answers questions about highlighted text. These will be available on Kindle and the Kindle iOS app. The lineup comes with a pen that attaches magnetically and does not require charging.

Pricing & availability

Prices start at $499.99 for the Kindle Scribe with front light, $629.99 for the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft, and $429.99 for the version without a front light. U.S. sales begin later this year, while the UK and Germany will get the devices early next year.

Multi-room music playback is supported via grouping with other Echo devices.

The smart display can also be used to watch video content through Prime Video (subscription required), follow workout videos via the browser, or access visual content like recipes and to-do lists. Hands-free Alexa controls make daily tasks easier, such as creating shopping lists or setting alarms.

Privacy features include a built-in camera shutter, a microphone on/off button, and voice recording controls via the Alexa app. Amazon also provides a dedicated Alexa Privacy Hub for more transparency.

Foldable laptops aren’t as common as foldable smartphones, with ASUS and Huawei being among the few to offer such notebooks. However, in a surprising turn of events, Amazon might be the latest brand to join the ranks. The news arrives from known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. In his latest tweet, Kuo stated that Apple’s competitors are currently working on large-sized foldable devices. But this isn’t limited to just Huawei with its new MateBook Fold Ultimate Design, but also Amazon.

The analyst claimed that Amazon is internally developing a similar product, but this has yet to go official. He further adds that “If development progresses as planned, it is projected to enter mass production in late 2026 or 2027.” In other words, the foldable laptop from Amazon isn’t too far off. Ming-Chi Kui also talked about how Apple’s 18.8-inch foldable device is expected to hit mass production by late 2027 or sometime in 2028.

By this time around, we can expect to find more foldable laptops to hit the market. These categories of PCs might even become a lot more mainstream in a few years. For years, many of us in the tech media fraternity have confidently recommended Amazon over other retailers in India. The reason was pretty simple: Amazon’s reputation for stellar customer service and hassle-free resolution of issues. 

But lately, for some reason, I’ve been hearing an increasing number of complaints regarding the brand’s customer service and resolution offers. 

And a couple of weeks ago, I personally had to go through with something similar. 

The Incident: Car Polish Instead of Headphones

In March, my sister reached out to me for recommendations on a cheap pair of headphones. For someone who has personally used the OnePlus neckband earphones before, my recommendation was pretty straightforward – get a pair of the OnePlus Bullets Z2 Earbuds. And I was the one who asked her to go with Amazon since I was confident that there wouldn’t be any issues and even if there were, it would be handled properly. 

But imagine our shock when, upon opening the package, she discovered not the Z2 earphones that she had ordered but a box of car polish instead.

The mix-up was so absurd it would be comical if not for the frustrating aftermath. 

When she called me, honestly, I was laughing. We have seen such cases before, but I never thought I would hear this about an Amazon shipment.

But immediately, I asked her to report it to Amazon customer service; I assured her not to worry. “It’s Amazon, not some other retailer,” I told her confidently. “They’ll sort this out without any hassle.”

My confidence was clearly misplaced.

The Response: “Nothing Can Be Done”

After what Amazon claimed was a thorough “investigation,” my sister received a stunning response: nothing could be done about the mix-up. 

This was not merely disappointing; it was shocking. The fundamental principle of retail is that the customer should receive what they pay for. If they don’t, the retailer has an obligation to make it right—regardless of where in the supply chain the error occurred.

I personally had a chat with one of their executives, and they said our fulfillment center placed the item in the box properly. So we can’t do anything about it. 

Now, I checked the box – there was no visible damage that could have hinted at any kind of tampering when we accepted the package. No holes, or visible patch-up work. No evidence that could have forced us to not accept the shipment. 

So Amazon’s refusal to acknowledge this basic responsibility represents a troubling shift in their approach to customer service, at least in the Indian market.

The end result — my sister has a nice car polish instead of a pair of earphones. 

A Matter of Trust

Honestly, I’m just glad that this was with a relatively inexpensive item. But it definitely shatters my trust in Amazon and its delivery service. Imagine if I had ordered a phone from Amazon (which I have done and recommended plenty of times before).

Like many Amazon customers, I’ve developed such trust in their service that I often leave packages unopened for days after delivery, confident that:

1. Mix-ups are extremely rare with Amazon
2. If a genuine issue occurs, their support team would promptly resolve it

That confidence has now been shattered. 

If Amazon can simply wash their hands of responsibility for delivering the wrong product, what does this mean for customers purchasing higher-value items?

The Broader Concern: Industry Standards Slipping?

What’s particularly concerning is that Amazon has long set the gold standard for customer service in e-commerce. If they’re lowering their standards, what can consumers expect from other platforms that have historically offered less robust customer protection?

The message seems clear: the burden of verification is shifting increasingly to the consumer. In an era of fast-paced deliveries and increasing automation, customers can no longer assume what’s inside the package matches what was ordered—even from retailers they’ve trusted for years.

It is now your duty to ensure that the package contains the right product. 

Protecting Yourself: What Consumers Should Do?

In light of this experience, here are some precautions I now recommend to all online shoppers:

• Open and inspect all packages immediately upon delivery even for retailers like Amazon, ideally while the delivery person is still present. 
• Record unboxing videos for high-value items as evidence. 
• Check the packaging for signs of tampering before accepting delivery.
• Save all order confirmation emails and screenshots of your purchases.
• Document any communication with customer service in writing.

The Bottom Line: Trust But Verify

For years, I’ve enthusiastically recommended Amazon to my readers, friends, and family. While I won’t stop using their services, I’ll certainly be more cautious with my Amazon orders. More importantly, I can no longer recommend them with the same confidence I once did.

Genuine and excellent customer support was Amazon’s biggest selling point in a competitive market. It appears that this advantage may be eroding, and consumers would be wise to adjust their expectations accordingly.

Whether this incident represents an isolated failure or a broader policy shift remains to be seen. What’s clear is that even with the most trusted retailers, the age-old advice applies more than ever: trust, but verify.

Amazon has launched Alexa+, a generative AI assistant that works with over 600 million existing Alexa devices. The system holds conversations naturally and completes tasks independently.

Alexa+ functions through “experts” – systems that perform specific operations. These enable Alexa+ to control smart home devices, make reservations, play music across services, order groceries, and monitor home security.

The assistant can navigate the internet autonomously to complete tasks. It can locate service providers, make arrangements, and report back without user intervention.

Alexa+ learns user preferences from past purchases and allows users to add information like dietary restrictions or recipes. It applies this knowledge when making suggestions.

The service works across Echo devices, a new mobile app, and Alexa.com. Conversations transfer between devices while maintaining context.

Users can upload documents, emails, photos, and messages for Alexa+ to summarize or use. Amazon built the system with privacy protections, with settings managed in the Alexa Privacy dashboard.

Alexa+ costs $19.99 monthly, but is free for Prime members alongside existing benefits like delivery and entertainment services. The US rollout begins with early access for Echo Show owners, followed by a phased expansion. Users can request early access at amazon.com/newalexa.

In other news, Amazon is shutting down its Appstore for Android devices on August 20, 2025, with new app submissions already halted. Amazon has announced plans to discontinue its Appstore for Android devices, as revealed in a notice to developers. The company has also decided to phase out its Amazon Coins program. This move is part of a broader strategy to focus on its own ecosystem, primarily Fire TV and Fire Tablet devices.

Amazon Appstore to be discontinued on Android

The Amazon Appstore for Android will no longer be available from Aug. 20, 2025. Developers can continue releasing updates for existing apps until this date, but new submissions have already been halted. Users will lose access to the store on Android devices after the shutdown, making Google Play the default marketplace for most.

Alongside the Appstore closure, Amazon is also discontinuing its digital currency program, Amazon Coins. As of Feb. 20, 2025, users can no longer purchase Coins, and any remaining balance must be used before the shutdown. Unused Coins will be refunded, with Amazon set to provide details on the refund process later.

While Android users will lose access, the Amazon Appstore will remain functional on the company’s own devices, including Fire TV and Fire Tablets. Amazon stated that the majority of Appstore engagement comes from these devices, making it logical to focus efforts there.

Amazon’s attempt to establish an alternative app distribution platform dates back to 2011, but it struggled to compete with Google Play and the Apple App Store. The store was preloaded on Amazon’s Fire devices and even appeared on select Android and BlackBerry models at one point. However, user engagement outside of Amazon’s ecosystem remained minimal.

Additionally, Amazon confirmed that support for its Appstore on Windows 11 will end on March 5, 2025, following Microsoft’s decision to discontinue the Windows Subsystem for Android. The accusations center around exclusive product launches and unfair practices that violate antitrust laws.

Exclusive Launches and Preferential Treatment Raise Concerns About Fair Competition

According to regulatory reports obtained by Reuters, the CCI’s investigations found that Amazon and Flipkart prioritized certain sellers, offered deep discounts, and engaged in “exclusive” phone launches with companies like Samsung, Xiaomi, Motorola, Realme, OnePlus (Amazon), Vivo, and Lenovo (Flipkart). These practices are alleged to have stifled competition and harmed other businesses, particularly brick-and-mortar retailers.

The CCI reports, exceeding 1,000 pages each, detail how these exclusive launches “deliberately downplayed” competition and favored select sellers who received subsidized warehousing and marketing benefits. This preferential treatment is seen as a way to manipulate market share and potentially inflate prices for consumers.

The findings are a significant blow to both Amazon and Flipkart, who have been facing increasing scrutiny in India for their dominance in the e-commerce market. This is further compounded by the fact that India’s e-retail sector is booming, projected to reach $160 billion by 2028, according to Bain & Company. Losing consumer trust and facing potential fines could be a major setback for these online giants.

The allegations also raise concerns for smartphone manufacturers. Samsung and Xiaomi hold a combined market share of nearly 36% in India, and exclusive launches could give them an unfair advantage. These companies, along with others named in the reports, have been ordered to submit financial statements for the past three years to the CCI for further investigation.

The situation has been brewing for several years. The Confederation of All India Traders, representing millions of small retailers, filed a complaint in 2020 that triggered the CCI investigation. Indian sellers have long accused e-commerce platforms and smartphone brands of unfairly cutting them out of the latest phone launches, leaving them with outdated models and struggling to compete.

The CCI is expected to review any objections from the accused parties in the coming weeks. Potential consequences include fines and court-mandated changes to business practices. Whether this will lead to a more level playing field and fairer competition in the Indian smartphone market remains to be seen. This case also sets a precedent for other countries looking to regulate the growing influence of e-commerce giants and their impact on traditional retail.
