Apple AirTag 2 launch reportedly delayed to 2025

The Apple AirTag was first unveiled back in 2021 and was the company’s new compact smart tracker. This tiny gadget helped users keep track of precious possessions. A successor dubbed AirTag 2 was recently rumored to launch in 2024, but this release might have been delayed.

Apple AirTag 2 Launch Postponed

The Cupertino based giant was initially planned to announce the AirTag 2 smart tracker next year. But according to the latest report from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the release of the upcoming device has been delayed. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the iPhone maker’s AirTag 2 mass production plans have been postponed. Kuo has claimed that the mass production will only begin by 2025.

Previously, Ming-Chi Kuo had claimed that the mass production of AirTag 2 would begin by the fourth and final quarter of 2024. The analyst added that Apple wants to build a new spatial computing ecosystem, with the Vision Pro at the center of other devices. This would include the AirTag 2 as well. Unfortunately, it is still unclear just how the smart tracker will function or integrate with the Vision Pro. Although there are speculations that the AirTag 2’s UWB chip could be used to share positional information with the headset.

The AirTag 2 is expected to launch with improvements over its predecessor, which could imply a higher battery life and wider range. However, this is still just a speculation so take this report with a pinch of salt. The most recent one occurred in South Carolina, where a thief was arrested for multiple burglaries, thanks to location tracking by an Apple AirTag.

AirTag Helps Police Track Down Restaurant Burglar

Without a doubt, the AirTag is one of the most practical products produced by Apple. This small yet effective item, which you can attach to your keychain, wallet, motorcycle, or even your pet’s collar, allows you to track the location instantly, preventing you from losing things that are valuable to you. The device is also a nightmare for thieves.

For example, not long ago, we told you a story about how a man was able to recover his valuables worth $7k that were stolen from his hotel room, all thanks to AirTag. Now, a thief was caught by the police, thanks to this technology.

The police have reported that a man from South Carolina is said to have stolen a dummy safe from the Sneaky Beagle back in July. The safe was fitted with an Apple AirTag, a device that helped the police track the man’s actions. His movements led the police to a series of other thefts in the area.

The man, named Smith, is believed to have stolen cash, money bags, and other items from four different restaurants. The total value of what was stolen is still being worked out, but it is thought to be somewhere between $15,000 and $20,000. Smith was taken into custody last Friday and is now in Horry County Jail. His court date is set for August 1.

As we previously mentioned, this isn’t the first time the AirTag technology has been used in theft cases. However, this technology does have serious drawbacks. For instance, an event that emerged at the start of July revealed that an AirTag was used by a stalker to track US actress Hannah Rose May.

The only thing that prevented the situation from escalating was a “Find My” notification on her iPhone. As you can see, the AirTag, with its advantages and disadvantages, is one of the most controversial technologies of recent years. Fortunately, Apple has included safety features in AirTag to prevent its use for stalking. In one instance, these safety features successfully protected a woman from being stalked.

Apple AirTag safety features foil Iowa man’s repeated stalking attempts

Apple’s AirTag item tracker continues to effectively thwart stalking attempts, as demonstrated by a recent incident in Iowa. A man was arrested after attempting to stalk a person he claimed to be married to, despite the victim telling investigators that the two had never had a relationship and the man had been blocked from contacting them.

Carl Steven Shawver, 63, placed an AirTag on the victim’s car in an effort to track their movements. However, the victim was alerted to the AirTag thanks to Apple’s built-in safety measures, which notified them of the device’s presence. Shawver then showed up at the local police department, where the victim had gone to report the stalking, and claimed that the victim was having an affair at the station.

Despite no arrest being made at this point, the victim was alerted to two further AirTags tracking their movements. West Des Moines Police officers located the second AirTag “placed in a wallet and inside a plastic sandwich bag sitting on top of the spare tire.” The third AirTag was eventually found on the car’s subframe near the front passenger tire, wrapped in plastic and in a case.

All three AirTags were then placed into evidence at the police department, and Shawver was arrested after being found in the station’s parking lot. He is currently being held on a $3,000 bond, with a preliminary hearing set for December 19. This case highlights the effectiveness of Apple’s AirTag safety measures, which have been designed to protect users from stalking attempts.

Apple AirTag helps cops recover luggage & other valuables stolen by airport worker

Apple’s AirTag has been in the news for both good and bad reasons lately. The device had been helpful in recovering lost items but it has also been used for stalking people. There had been numerous reports of how the AirTag had been helpful in locating stolen luggage. This time, it involved a 19-year-old airport worker who stole luggage containing an AirTag and was later nabbed with items from another stolen airport luggage.

The Apple AirTags, in combination with the FindMy app, is very helpful in locating stolen or lost items. A press release by the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) has announced the arrest of Giovanni De Luca on two counts of grand theft. The suspect worked as a subcontractor at Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport and is accused of stealing two separate pieces of luggage from the airport.

The first incident involved a suitcase with items worth about $1,600 which went missing from the airport. Fortunately, the suitcase had an AirTag attached to it and it was tracked to the Kathy Court area in Mary Esther. Another traveler thereafter reported that more than $15,000 worth of valuable items had been stolen from his luggage.

The Police were able to pinpoint De Luca as one of the airport staff living in the Kathy Court area and paid him a visit in his home. During the visit to De Luca’s home, the AirTag and the missing valuables from the second incident were recovered. De Luca also admitted going through the first victim’s luggage and taking the Apple AirTag that was inside the bag. However, other belongings from the first bag are yet to be recovered.

The police authorities are praising the fine collaboration between the airport authorities and the police in solving the crime. The criminal obviously did not realize what an Apple AirTag is or is capable of doing, but kudos that he was caught.

Apple AirTag helps man recover valuables worth $7k stolen from his hotel room

A man who went on vacation in Australia has had his expensive equipment recovered, thanks to the Apple AirTags in his luggage. The AirTag assisted the man to track his stolen possessions with the assistance of the police. This is yet another great positive story about the AirTag which has had a raft of negative news lately.

The man is named Graham Tait and the incident happened a few days back in South Australia. His car was broken into in the night and several valuables with an estimated value of $7,000 were taken away. The items included a Sony camera, a notebook, a wallet, and a GoPro. Luckily for Tait, he had been an active user of his AirTags which were attached to the laptop back and Sony camera. Using the Find My app, Tait was able to track down the items.

Tait had lodged in a hotel when the incident happened and the items were tracked to another room in the hotel. Police were called in and his stolen possessions were returned back to him. The Police are now dealing with the alleged thief, according to the report. The name of the suspect alleged to have stolen Tait’s possessions has not been released yet.

This news is another positive and original use of the Apple AirTag and it is satisfying. Criminals have continued to use the AirTag for negative purposes including stalking and robbery. Apple has also made stringent efforts to safeguard the privacy of AirTags owners. There are also measures to ensure that users are notified when a foreign AirTag is in range.

UK man uses AirTags and PowerPoint presentation to track his lost bags

It has been a mixed bag of positives and negatives for Apple’s AirTags since they were launched by the tech powerhouse. There have been concerns that the device is being put to criminal use in addition to privacy concerns. However, we have continued to hear wonderful stories concerning the AirTags and relating to its original purpose. A UK man has used the AirTags in his missing luggage and a PowerPoint presentation to ask the airline for his lost bags.

On a return trip from South Africa, Elliot Sharod and his wife arrived in the United Kingdom without their luggage due to some changes in their flight trajectory. Probably anticipating issues of lost luggage, Sharod had placed an AirTag in each of the bags and was able to track them via his Find My app. The bags were tracked to Frankfurt, which was the first stop on their trip from South Africa to the UK. The airline, Aer Lungus subsequently delivered the luggage to Sharod the following day, albeit with one of the three bags still missing.

The airline seemingly was not responsive to Sharod’s further request for his lost bag. He had used multiple channels including multiple calls, emails and tweets to complain without a resolution of the issue. Sharod subsequently deployed the tracking information from his Find My app that pinpointed the location of the bag. He used screenshots from the app to create a PowerPoint presentation he shared on multiple platforms. The airline says it has checked on the locations but the bag could not be found, possibly stolen.

Sharod has contacted the police to help recover his stolen bag. He says this has been a shocking experience with the airline. He is not impressed with the response of the airline to his missing luggage. A recent update, however, shows that the missing bag has finally been retrieved.

The use of electronic tracking devices to commit criminal offenses has been on the increase recently. Apple has had to update its AirTag to create additional layers of security and safety against being used as a snooping device or for criminal purposes. It seems there are other weird ways of achieving unauthorized tracking as a Nashville, Tennessee man has been arrested for tracking using an Apple Watch.

Lawrence Welch, a 29-year old resident of Nashville was arrested for tracking the location of his girlfriend by attaching an Apple Watch to the wheel of her car and using a tracking app. Welch was subsequently charged with attaching an electronic tracking device to a vehicle. Welch had turned up at a Family Safety Center while an order of protection was being sought for the unnamed girlfriend. The victim claimed that death threats were made by Welch against her multiple times before the Police arrived at the scene.

The victim also mentioned that she and Welch had used Life360 to track each other’s movement in the past, but she turned it off whenever she was going to any of the Family Safety Centers. Security officials at the Center found Welch crouching by the victim’s car wheel which aroused suspicion. Officers later discovered the Apple Watch on the wheel which Welch confirmed was his. The incident is the latest in several similar domestic assault issues since July 2021. He already has two domestic assaults to grapple with already. The incident will further expand the need for greater scrutiny of the Apple Watch as an unusual stalking device.

Apple AirTag clone created by a researcher can beat current anti-tracking measures

A new Apple AirTag clone created by a security researcher points to the possibility of bypassing the device and tracking protection features already available via Apple Find My network. The new finding provides another layer of concern for the seemingly revolutionary Apple AirTag that has now become a tool for stalking and criminality.

Apple has had to grapple with rising concerns about how the AirTag was being used to intrude on the privacy and safety of persons. Multiple reports had surfaced about the use of AirTags as tools for criminality and stalking. Although Apple came up recently with an updated user guide and advisory on how to prevent stalking, the problem seems to persist. In addition, Apple had introduced a raft of changes on the Find My network aimed at addressing some of the issues emanating from the misuse of the AirTags.

The new research that indicates a cloned AirTag could bypass the current architecture in the Find My network was published by security researcher Fabian Braunlein of Positive Security firm. Several of the bypassing strategies, according to the security researcher, could be put into practice effectively. The report indicates that a cloned AirTag was able to track an iPhone for 5 days without triggering any tracking notifications. Several measures were aimed to thwart current and possibly subsequent modifications from Apple with grave security implications.

With the absence of a serial number and functional speaker, the clone provides a serious challenge to Apple’s plans of ensuring user security while using the AirTags. We note that some AirTags were advertised on Etsy and eBay recently with demobilized speakers. The AirTag clone’s system is based on OpenHaystack and has some pretty strong algorithmic possibilities that may thwart tracking by law enforcement.

In all, Braunlein feels that there are opportunities for Apple to shore up its security architecture to remove all the stated threats. He says Apple needs to take into account the threats from custom-made potentially malicious devices that implement the Find My app protocol or modified AirTags hardware. It remains to be seen how Apple responds to the clear points raised by the security researcher, amidst growing criticism of the AirTags’ functionality.

Apple‘s AirTag has been in the spotlight in recent weeks due to the various illegal uses and activity that has come to be connected with the device. It has been put to sinister uses by criminal minds even with the updated User Guide put forward by Apple to help safeguard users of the AirTag. Apple has now gone further by announcing a series of changes aimed at frontally attacking the misuse of the AirTags, with the rollout of these changes to spread throughout 2022.

The Apple AirTags was released last year with greater functionality and reach than some of the existing Bluetooth-based tracking tags. The AirTags, when combined with the companion app Find My provided a connected ecosystem of iPhone users to help track the device. This has meant that AirTags are increasingly used by criminal minds for stalking, theft, and other forms of criminality. In a statement, Apple said that it had become aware that individuals can receive unwanted tracking alerts for a raft of benign reasons while it has also seen reports of bad actors attempting criminal and malicious misuse of the device.

Apple said it will be providing greater security for AirTags users and provide safety warnings to help guard against further unwanted tracking. The upcoming software update for the AirTags will kickstart the new changes aimed at improving user safety while using the AirTag. The setup will include a warning that the device is only intended to be used with the user’s own belongings, and that law enforcement agencies can request identifying information about the owner of an AirTag. The new safety architecture also includes improvements to the Unknown Accessory Detected alert will now appear for AirTags. This will display the name of the device in the updated version. There are several other updates lined up, and Apple assures that these will further safeguard users from being stalked or prone to the several misuses of the device.

Even with these elaborate plans, there are still fears that smart alecs will continue to navigate around such roadblocks, as observed a few days back when it was reported that AirTags with disabled speakers were on sale on Etsy and eBay. The question also remains how non-Apple AirTags users or the general population can be safeguarded from being tracked.

Apple updates Personal Safety User Guide to help AirTag users beat stalkers

Apple AirTag has been deployed for different purposes than what Apple apparently envisages including criminal purposes, as several stories relating to stalking and stealing using the device have been reported. Technology has come a long way but it is still a serious challenge when tech gadgets are put to criminal use away from the design philosophy for the gadget. Apple has now responded to the issue by updating its Personal Safety User Guide with new information on steps that consumers should take when they find an unknown Air Tag in their environment or hear the sound of an Air Tag which is not theirs. The updated User Guide explains what an alert from an AirTag means and gives the user useful tips on what to do when an AirTag or any other device is noticed following them using the app. Instructions for Android users are also contained in the updated Personal Safety User Guide.

Although there had been some information on safety steps to do to safeguard a user’s account from intruders, the new criminal venture of using an AirTag as a guide to steal expensive vehicles or commit other crimes may not have been factored in before now. Some users have also reported getting alerts of being tracked after they left a public place, while some parents use the device to track their teenage children without permission. However, Apple’s proactive measure to notify an AirTag user that he is being tracked may have provided some illumination of the issue. Other similar devices from other manufacturers are yet to provide such details to users and that could affect user safety.

The new measures which also have integrated Android users into the mix will help to enhance user privacy and safety from stalking. The user is instructed on how to use the Tracker Detect app for Android. The updated User Guide is available online and it has also been primed to be visible in Google searches for greater coverage. Overall safety and privacy are enhanced a bit although experts still insist there must be a change in functionality of the device itself.

Xiaomi might be working on a cheaper alternative to the Apple AirTag

Xiaomi might just be working on its own version of the Apple AirTag. The patent from the company was recently granted and had the title of “Method and Device for Finding Objects.”

The patent has the application number CN106877911B and was first applied back in 2017. This patent is regarding a method and device that is capable of finding items, as reported by ITHome. In other words, the product in question could be used to find lost items of the user. Meaning, it should be similar to or could actually be a smart tag from the Chinese tech giant. In recent times, certain smartphone makers have launched their own iterations of a smart tracker device, including the Cupertino based company, Apple.

For those unaware, Apple recently launched the AirTag, which is a smart tracking device, that helps users find lost objects or keep track of certain accessories. So, Xiaomi might also be working on a product that offers similar functionality but at a price tag that makes it more accessible to the broader audience. Although, this is just speculation at the moment, so take it with a pinch of salt. Unfortunately, this is still a patent and it is too early to tell if the smartphone maker is actually working on such a product or just covering all bases, so stay tuned for more updates.

New patent filing indicates OnePlus may be working on a SmartTag, AirTag rival

The use of item tracking tags is increasingly attractive, and several other manufacturers are known to be working on such devices on their lineup. Samsung and Apple are the trailblazers in this area, but that could change pretty soon. A new patent filing by OnePlus for a device called OnePlusTag provides some hints that the smartphone manufacturer could be planning to join Samsung and Apple in launching a smart item tracking tag.

The OnePlusTag listing does not provide many details about the device. However, we know that a smart tag in the mold of Apple’s and Samsung’s offering would be the most probable device that has now been trademarked by OnePlus. There is no official statement by OnePlus at this time, as the company continues to prepare for the Nord CE 5G unveiling in a few days time.

Item tracking devices like Samsung’s SmartTag and Apple’s AirTag deploy innovative technologies to ensure that the tagged device can be located even when it is out of range with its paired Android or iOS smartphone. The devices can be found using the app (for example, the SmartThingsFinder) to draw from the resources of other compatible devices to provide global location capabilities for any tagged object. The deployment of Ultra-Wideband technology has become commonplace. This enables more accurate tracking of a tagged object.

Smartphone manufacturers are increasingly expanding their product offerings to cover diverse products. Recently Samsung introduced a Bespoke Shoe Dresser, which provides deodorization, desiccation, and sterilization solutions to a user’s shoe collection. Apple AirTag isn’t very useful for checked baggage tracking

Apple has finally launched its much-anticipated AirTag in the market which makes it easier for the users to keep track of their valuable things and objects. If you were wondering if the device can be used for tracking baggage, then you have come to the right place.

The simple answer to this is yes, the newly launched Apple AirTags can be used for the checked baggage, reports David Flynn of Executive Traveller. However, the tracking of bags won’t work in the airport conveyer belt system, despite the fact that there will be airport workers with iPhones working close to it.

This is because AirTag’s live here-I-am tracking isn’t intended for objects that are moving unless that happens at the most leisurely pace but the airport luggage belt is fast for the AirTags to work properly.

If you are concerned about the usage of rechargeable lithium-ion battery packs that have been banned by the airlines, then there’s nothing to worry about as this doesn’t apply to the tiny single-use lithium CR2023 cells.

In the future, Apple can expand the functionality of AirTag through a software update that would send a notification to the user’s iPhone once the device comes within the range of Bluetooth, such as when the bag lands on the carousel.

Currently, the scenario where AirTag can be useful for luggage tracking is when your bag has been unexpectedly directed to the oversized baggage office instead of coming out on the luggage belt or any similar situation where the bag is misplaced but is stationary.

Apple AirTag iFixit Teardown: ‘Impressively Compact’ Design compared to Galaxy SmartTag

iFixit has just shared the first part of its two part series in which in tears down the new Apple AirTag smart tracker. In the teardown, iFixit noted that the product has an impressive internal design decision that helped it achieve a compact form factor.

As per the teadown from iFixit, the Cupertino based giant’s smart tracker offering is the smallest in size in comparison to its rivals the Tile Mate and the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag. The iPhone maker achieved this feat through an ‘impressively compact’ design despite the battery taking up the most internal space in the housing. Although, one major difference with the AirTag and other trackers is the lack of a keyring hole, which iFixit stated as one of Apple’s move of “turning essential functions into premium, add-on accessories.”

An x-ray of the three trackers together showcases that the AirTag wasted no internal space for its item tracker, while the Tile Mate and Galaxy SmartTag had been “sprawling” with internal space. Notably, despite both the Tile Mate and Galaxy SmartTag having a large body overall, neither of them offer ultra wideband technology like AirTags. Although, it is worth noting that Samsung has recently launched an ultra widband variant of its Galaxy SmartTag.

Under the hood, all three trackers feature a coin cell replaceable batteries, with the AirTag and the Galaxy SmartTag housing a .66Wh CR2032 battery, while the Tile Mate uses a smaller .39Wh CR1632 battery. iFixit also noted that Apple showcased “surprising restraint in sealing the AirTag,” with replacing the battery being the furthest a customer will be able to reach without proper tooling.

Apple has finally unveiled its smart tracker device. The device adopts the moniker Apple AirTag and features similar technology that adorns the recently released Samsung SmartTag+ which debuted last week in South Korea.

The Apple AirTag features ultra-wideband (UWB) technology to locate the device with greater precision. Using Apple’s Find My app, you can quickly locate the tagged object. The AirTag will work using the Find My app on the iPhone 11 or 12 Series.

The operation of the SmartTag is similar to Samsung’s SmartTag+, and when the tracker is within the Bluetooth range, a beep can be activated via the app to locate the tagged object quickly. Apple’s smart Voice Assistant Siri can also be used to find the tracker.

The smart and lightweight tracker’s added feature is that it is both water and dust resistant, with its IP67 rating. It also has a lithium battery that can last up to a year.

Apple has also ensured that even when the tag is out of Bluetooth range, a combination of smart features in the device makes it possible to locate the tag using the Precision Finding technique, according to Apple. The ability to locate a lost or stolen tag will depend on the availability of users of Apple’s Find My app anywhere in the world where UWB service is not restricted. In such instances, the AirTag can discreetly use other smartphones to update its location on the owner’s Find My app.

The Apple AirTag will be available from April 30 and will retail for just $29. However, a pack of four Apple AirTags can be gotten for $99.
