We had previously stated that this prototype was a project from Huawei but have corrected the discrepancy.</p>
<p>An engineer from <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/huawei/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Huawei</a> has developed an autonomous bicycle prototype. The prototype electric bicycle is quite impressive, with it being capable of maintaining its balance even on the slimmest of surfaces (demonstrated with the bike standing on a thin fence). Furthermore, the self-driving bike also arrives with a series of impressive features like the high precision sensors on its body, paired with image recognition cameras, and AI (Artificial Intelligence) technology as well, which enables it to run without the need for human interaction.</p>
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-width="550" data-dnt="true">
<p lang="en" dir="ltr">Okay in response to <a href="https://twitter.com/TubeTimeUS?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@TubeTimeUS</a>&#39;s request, some of my favorite Chinese Makers (the real kind, not the entrepreneurs calling themselves Makers with no technical skills)</p>
<p>First up, 稚晖 and his self-driving bicycle, complete (really good) build video here: <a href="https://t.co/edjHcPOjUj">https://t.co/edjHcPOjUj</a> <a href="https://t.co/HyPvkQAszv">pic.twitter.com/HyPvkQAszv</a></p>
<p>&mdash; Naomi Wu 机械妖姬 (@RealSexyCyborg) <a href="https://twitter.com/RealSexyCyborg/status/1401461196411215883?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">June 6, 2021</a></p></blockquote>
<p><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p>
<p>The engineer at the helm of this project is Zhihui Jun, who apparently got this idea after he faced an injury due to a bicycle accident. This injury leads him to realize that there is potential for a self-driving bike. Thus, the company&#8217;s team put together equipment such as an automatic control system along with a perception sensor network, and a chip that acts as the brain of the system and providers the required computing power.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-399248 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Screenshot-332.png?x44794" alt="Huawei" width="1013" height="566" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Screenshot-332.png 1013w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Screenshot-332-300x168.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Screenshot-332-768x429.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Screenshot-332-696x389.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Screenshot-332-752x420.png 752w" sizes="(max-width: 1013px) 100vw, 1013px" /></p>
<p>The engineer first began modeling the bicycle on CAD, and then added two large brushless motors and steering gear on the physical prototype. After this, Zhihui Jun equipped the bike with an RGBD depth camera, an accelerometer, gyroscope, and even a LiDAR sensor. The bike is powered by a lithium-based battery that can last for up to 2 to 3 hours, while the main control module is housed right below the seat.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-399247 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Screenshot-334.png?x44794" alt="Huawei" width="1014" height="564" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Screenshot-334.png 1014w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Screenshot-334-300x167.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Screenshot-334-768x427.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Screenshot-334-696x387.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Screenshot-334-755x420.png 755w" sizes="(max-width: 1014px) 100vw, 1014px" /></p>
<p>The engineer outfitted the bicycle with a control module that works similarly to the systems used in artificial satellites to maintain its balance. In other words, it is equipped with small but high precision sensors that can detect even the slightest of tilts and immediately sends data to the control module so that it can make changes that ensure that it can stand on its own. The motor also helps run the rear wheel, which enables it to move without pedaling.</p>

The official Mi Home Weibo account revealed early today that it has a launch scheduled for 10 AM on August 15.</p>
<p>The post includes a teaser poster with a text. When translated, we were able to make out the phrases anti-theft, good to ride, and good looking. From this we presume the bike will have an anti-theft protection, be comfortable to ride, and also have an attractive design.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-144964" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Xiaomi-Bicycle-2017-teaser.jpg?x44794" alt="Xiaomi Bicycle 2017 teaser" width="690" height="1227" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Xiaomi-Bicycle-2017-teaser.jpg 690w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Xiaomi-Bicycle-2017-teaser-169x300.jpg 169w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Xiaomi-Bicycle-2017-teaser-576x1024.jpg 576w" sizes="(max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px" /></p>
<p>The two Xiaomi bikes released last year are priced at different extremes. One is the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2016/03/22/xiaomi-launches-qicycle-r1-smart-bicycle-priced-3000/">QiCycleR1</a> priced at $3000 and the other is the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2016/06/23/xiaomi-electric-bicycle-announced/">foldable electric bicycle</a> that sells for $455. We don&#8217;t know how much this new bike will cost, but our guess is that it will lie between the two.</p>

<p>There is also no record of the number of units sold for the bikes released last year. But if it is releasing another one this year, we can presume last year&#8217;s models weren&#8217;t failures.</p>

That&#8217;s not surprising seeing as bicycles are one of the major forms of transportation that don&#8217;t cause pollution. But even this two-wheeled vehicle has got problems of its own.</p>
<p>From 2nd of April to 4th of April, the Chinese people celebrate Ching Ming Festival, a holiday dedicated to the remembrance of their ancestors. The third day is actually the main festival and is also referred to as Grave-Sweeping Day.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-125614" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Shenzhen-Bay-Park-Bikes.jpg?x44794" alt="" width="550" height="352" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Shenzhen-Bay-Park-Bikes.jpg 550w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Shenzhen-Bay-Park-Bikes-300x192.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px" /></p>
<p>Due to the holidays, public places have been parked full with people. One of such places is the Shenzhen Bay Park which received a total of 30 million visitors on Sunday and 20 million visitors yesterday. Some of these visitors came with bicycles and took up so much space with their parked bikes, making it difficult for pedestrians to walk. A total of 6000 bikes were recorded to have been parked within the bay.</p>
<p>In order to prevent the re-occurrence of the massive gridlock caused by the parked bikes, the Shenzhen Bay Park authorities have issued a bike ban in the park today, which is the last but main day of the celebration. Some bike owners have said the reason for the congestion is caused by cars that have taken over bike lanes and blocked paths designated for bikes, leaving them no option than to enter into the Shenzhen Bay Park. The park is actually a favorite place for cyclists to ride but not a place to park.</p>
<p style="text-align: center"><span style="color: #ff0000">READ MORE:</span> <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2017/02/20/xiaomi-e-bikes-rent-reportedly-ordered-beijing-streets/">Xiaomi e-bikes for Rent Reportedly Ordered out of Beijing Streets</a><span id="more-125608"></span></p>
<p>The authorities were also able to get the co-operation of six bike-sharing companies to suspend business for today to allow visitors to the park enjoy their holiday.</p>
