Gemini will operate on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute (PCC) servers, ensuring user data remains isolated from Google’s infrastructure. Data from QR Code Generator reveals a near 60% jump in global searches for “Gemini” on June 4th, coinciding precisely with the reported downtime of ChatGPT. On average, daily searches for “Gemini” hover around 204,991, but during the ChatGPT outage, that number skyrocketed to 327,058. This suggests that users actively sought alternatives when their go-to chatbot became unavailable.

Interestingly, the rise in Gemini searches mirrored the rise in searches for “ChatGPT down” during the same timeframe, highlighting a clear correlation. Reports from DownDetector indicate that the ChatGPT outage began around 8:00 AM London time on June 4th.

While Gemini emerged as the most popular alternative, other searches like “Microsoft Copilot” and “ChatGPT Alternative” also saw a rise. Daily searches for “Microsoft Copilot” typically average around 11,090, but on June 4th, that number jumped to 16,677, a 50% increase. Similarly, searches for “ChatGPT Alternative” spiked to 11,000 within the first few hours of the outage, compared to a typical daily average of 898. However, it’s important to note that these alternative searches pale in comparison to the surge in Gemini interest.

Marc Porcar, CEO of QR Code Generator, sees this as a validation of Google’s efforts to position itself as a major player in generative AI. “The clear parallel trend between the ChatGPT outage and the surge in Gemini searches suggests that people see Gemini as an obvious alternative,” commented Porcar. He further emphasizes that in the absence of ChatGPT, users readily turned to Gemini, signifying its potential as a strong competitor.

It’s worth mentioning that OpenAI’s ChatGPT boasts around 180 million active users worldwide, solidifying its position as a leader in generative AI chatbots. Logan Kilpatrick was invited to join Google by its executives including Sundar Pichai, Jeff Dean, Vice President of Product Mat Velloso, and Google Vice President Josh Woodward.

Now Logan has announced on Twitter / X that he has left OpenAI and joined Google to lead the product for Google AI Studio and support the Gemini API. “I’m not going to settle for anything less,” he noted.

His previous username on the platform was “Logan.GPT”. Not to mention, it has now been replaced by his name. The funny thing is that a user suggested “Logan Gemini” as a more relevant username.

As the Senior Developer Advocate at OpenAI, Logan has helped thousands of developers bring amazing products to reality. People like him are expected to prove to be a valuable addition to Google AI.

Notably, Google isn’t stopping here. They are looking for new talents to enrich their teams across many teams. Kilpatrick notes in one of his tweets “If you want to build cool stuff for devs, be on the edge, and support millions of developers, please ping me. We are hiring across many teams (eng, product, etc).” He is willing to have conversations with developers who are building something cool and interesting “If you’re working on something cool and want to chat, my DMs are open.”

Google made a major announcement yesterday, streamlining all of its AI efforts under a single name — Gemini. This means that Google’s AI chatbot, formerly known as Bard, is now referred to as Gemini, and the tech giant has also introduced its standalone Android app.

But do you recall Google’s announcement last year regarding its plan to imbue Android’s default Assistant with AI capabilities under the service named “Assistant with Bard”? With Bard now rebranded, there might be uncertainty about the fate of the Assistant’s AI services.

In response to this change, Google clarified to Android Authority that Gemini on Android is the experience that Assistant with Bard was meant to provide.

“The vision we shared in October remains the same — to build a true AI assistant that is conversational, multimodal, and helpful,” said a Google spokesperson.

“Now, with the incredible capabilities of Gemini, we can deliver on that vision in an even more profound and meaningful way. The technology allows us to push past the limits of what we could do before (timers, alarms, weather) to help you supercharge your ideas and collaborate directly with Google AI on your phone,” the spokesperson added.

In essence, the functionalities envisioned for “Assistant with Bard” are now fully integrated into Gemini for Android.

Google has already taken the initial steps towards this approach, as Gemini becomes the default Assistant on your Android after downloading the app from the Play Store. You can still switch back to the old Assistant in the settings if you prefer.

But Google is confident in Gemini powering the AI capabilities of Assistant going forward. This means that the “Assistant with Bard” name is now retired for good.

Google has unveiled its latest innovation in large language model (LLM), Gemini with three distinct versions — Nano, Pro, and Ultra. Each of them has its own unique capabilities, and if you’re curious, you can read all about them in our separate story.

Gemini Nano is the smallest and most efficient AI model from Google. This model is designed to run locally on your phone and Pixel 8 Pro is the first smartphone to use it. And, since Gemini Nano runs locally on the smartphone, users need not be connected to the internet. 

Pixel 8 Pro features powered by Gemini Nano

This local processing (currently) powers two new features for the Pixel 8 Pro:

• Summarize in Recorder: This feature lets you automatically generate bullet-point summaries of audio recordings, enhancing productivity and information absorption.

• Smart Reply in Gboard: This upgrade suggests contextually relevant replies within messaging apps, but currently is only limited to WhatsApp. However, Google plans to expand this feature to other apps soon. As Google says, Smart Reply saves you time by offering high-quality responses that are both conversational and contextually aware.

These features are part of the December Feature Drop, which also includes many other new additions (we’ll cover them in a separate article).

While the Tensor G3 chip currently has the exclusive power to run these AI features, it’s currently limited to the Pixel 8 Pro. However, we expect it to become available on the standard Pixel 8 soon, too.

Likewise, Google is also working to bring Gemini Nano ability to the entire Android system. They have launched a new system called AICore to help developers integrate Gemini-powered features into their apps.

Google has been steadily adding new features to its AI chatbot, the Google Bard. However, it has not been a tough competitor for ChatGPT and other AI chatbots that are equipped with GPT-3 and GPT-4. Google has now revealed that the Gemini Pro, a brand-new AI model from Google, is now powering the Bard.

According to Google, the Gemini is the company’s most capable AI model that it has ever built. Built to run on systems like data centres to mobile devices, it can seamlessly process and integrate text, code, audio, images, and videos, making it a versatile AI model.

Gemini Nano, Pro, Ultra

Google Gemini 1.0 can understand complex information and answer related questions due to its multimodal capabilities, and it comes in three distinct sizes: Gemini Ultra for demanding tasks, Gemini Pro for versatile usage, and Gemini Nano for streamlined on-device operations.

The Google Bard has now received its biggest upgrade as it is now updated with Gemini Pro, which means it can do more advanced reasoning, planning, understanding, and so on. It will be available in English in more than 170 countries and territories. The Pixel 8 Pro will soon receive an update to run Gemini Nano, which will bring features like Summarize in the Recorder app, Smart Reply in Gboard, and WhatsApp.

Speaking of Gemini Ultra, it can perform a wide range of tasks, including natural image, audio, and video understanding, mathematical reasoning, and multimodal problem-solving. According to Google, it has surpassed human experts on MMLU, a benchmark that assesses both knowledge and problem-solving abilities, and achieved an exceptional score on MMMU, a multimodal reasoning benchmark. Additionally, Ultra has outperformed previous models on image benchmarks without the need for object character recognition, showcasing its native multimodality and complex reasoning capabilities.

Google plans to make Gemini Ultra available to a select group of users for early testing and feedback before a broader rollout to developers and enterprise customers in early 2024. Additionally, Bard Advanced, a new AI experience powered by Gemini Ultra, will be launching in early 2024 to provide users with access to cutting-edge capabilities.

In addition, Google has introduced Cloud TPU v5p, the most powerful TPU system to date, enabling faster training of large-scale generative AI models and accelerating the development of new products and capabilities. To safeguard against harmful content, Gemini employs dedicated safety classifiers to identify, label, and filter out harmful content, such as violence and negative stereotypes. This layered approach ensures Gemini’s safety and inclusivity for all users.

Google has postponed the release of its next-generation AI chatbot, Gemini, until early next year, according to a new report by Sammobile. The company had initially planned to unveil Gemini in November 2023, but internal testing revealed that the chatbot struggled with certain non-English queries.

Gemini, touted as Google’s most powerful conversational AI to date, was poised to make its debut at a series of events in California, New York, and Washington, D.C. 

However, Google CEO Sundar Pichai made the decision to delay the launch after discovering that Gemini’s performance with non-English queries fell short of expectations.

Global language support is crucial for Google’s ambition to position Gemini as a superior alternative to OpenAI’s GPT-4. Until Gemini can demonstrate proficiency in handling non-English queries, Google believes it’s premature to introduce it to the wider market.

Despite the delay, Google remains confident in Gemini’s potential to outpace GPT-4. In private tests, Gemini has reportedly outperformed GPT-4, thanks to its superior computational power. 

Google CEO Pichai has emphasized the company’s commitment to delivering a “competitive and state-of-the-art” product with Gemini 1.0.

Google Vice President Sissie Hsiao provided an example of Gemini’s capabilities: “I’ve seen some pretty amazing things. Like, if I’m trying to bake a cake, draw me 3 pictures of the steps to how to ice a three-layer cake, and Gemini will create those images. These are completely novel pictures, not just pictures from the internet.”
