Key Highlights:

Apple is close to signing a US$1 billion per year deal with Google to use its Gemini AI model for Siri.

The upgraded Siri is expected to launch in spring 2026 as part of iOS 26.4.

Apple plans to use Gemini temporarily while developing its own large-scale AI model.

Apple Turns to Google for AI Upgrade

Apple is in final talks with Google to integrate its powerful Gemini AI model into Siri, marking one of the biggest artificial intelligence partnerships in the tech industry. The deal, worth around US$1 billion per year, aims to overhaul Siri’s capabilities and bring Apple up to speed in the fast-moving AI race. According to Bloomberg, the Gemini-powered Siri could launch by spring 2026 with iOS 26.4.

AI Generated Image

A Smarter, More Capable Siri

Currently, Siri runs on Apple’s in-house cloud AI with around 150 billion parameters. Under the new agreement, it will tap into Google’s Gemini model, which boasts 1.2 trillion parameters, nearly eight times more powerful. The upgrade will allow Siri to better understand complex commands, summarise information, and plan multi-step tasks.

Internally, the Siri revamp is known as “Linwood”, while the larger AI project is called “Glenwood.” The effort is being led by Apple executives Craig Federighi and Mike Rockwell, the creator of the Vision Pro headset.

Privacy and Performance

Despite using Google’s AI, Apple will maintain strict privacy controls. Gemini will operate on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute (PCC) servers, ensuring user data remains isolated from Google’s infrastructure. All processing will be temporary, with no data stored between sessions, reinforcing Apple’s privacy-first image.

However, this setup means Apple must expand its cloud hardware to handle Gemini’s massive size, potentially increasing costs and system load.

Why Apple Chose Google

Apple reportedly tested multiple AI models, including OpenAI’s GPT and Anthropic’s Claude, before selecting Gemini for its contextual understanding, scalability, and integration flexibility. While the deal gives Apple a major AI boost, it’s seen as a temporary arrangement until Apple completes its own 1-trillion-parameter AI model.

In markets like China, where Google services are banned, Apple plans to rely on its in-house models and local partners like Alibaba for regulatory compliance.

Strategic Implications

The collaboration marks a shift in Apple’s strategy, from building everything internally to selectively partnering with industry leaders. While the partnership won’t be publicly branded like the Safari-Google Search deal, it highlights how Apple is adapting to remain competitive in generative AI.

Both Apple and Google stocks rose after reports of the deal, signaling investor optimism. Once launched, the Gemini-powered Siri could redefine what voice assistants are capable of, blending power, privacy, and intelligence in a way that reshapes the AI landscape.

Over the coming months, the legacy Google Assistant will no longer be available on most mobile devices, with tablets, cars, wearables, and smart home gadgets (speakers, TVs) transitioning to Gemini later this year. The update follows positive feedback from users who have adopted Gemini’s upgraded features, including music playback, timer settings, and lock-screen controls—core Assistant functions now backed by generative AI.

Since its launch, Gemini has expanded to over 40 languages in more than 200 countries. Google is refining its functionality to match and exceed Google Assistant’s core features, including music playback, timers, and lock screen actions.

Beyond these basic functions, Gemini introduces AI-driven features such as Gemini Live for interactive, multimodal conversations and Deep Research for advanced information gathering. These tools extend Gemini’s capabilities beyond traditional virtual assistants.

Google is positioning Gemini as an evolution of digital assistance, integrating generative AI to improve user experience across devices. As the transition progresses, Google Assistant will continue to operate on supported devices until Gemini is fully implemented.

A recent outage of OpenAI‘s ChatGPT chatbot triggered a surge in interest for Google’s conversational AI competitor, Gemini. Data from QR Code Generator reveals a near 60% jump in global searches for “Gemini” on June 4th, coinciding precisely with the reported downtime of ChatGPT. On average, daily searches for “Gemini” hover around 204,991, but during the ChatGPT outage, that number skyrocketed to 327,058. This suggests that users actively sought alternatives when their go-to chatbot became unavailable.

The ChatGPT outage began around 8:00 AM London time on June 4th

Interestingly, the rise in Gemini searches mirrored the rise in searches for “ChatGPT down” during the same timeframe, highlighting a clear correlation. Reports from DownDetector indicate that the ChatGPT outage began around 8:00 AM London time on June 4th.

While Gemini emerged as the most popular alternative, other searches like “Microsoft Copilot” and “ChatGPT Alternative” also saw a rise. Daily searches for “Microsoft Copilot” typically average around 11,090, but on June 4th, that number jumped to 16,677, a 50% increase. Similarly, searches for “ChatGPT Alternative” spiked to 11,000 within the first few hours of the outage, compared to a typical daily average of 898. However, it’s important to note that these alternative searches pale in comparison to the surge in Gemini interest.

Marc Porcar, CEO of QR Code Generator, sees this as a validation of Google’s efforts to position itself as a major player in generative AI. “The clear parallel trend between the ChatGPT outage and the surge in Gemini searches suggests that people see Gemini as an obvious alternative,” commented Porcar. He further emphasizes that in the absence of ChatGPT, users readily turned to Gemini, signifying its potential as a strong competitor.

FILE PHOTO: OpenAI and ChatGPT logos are seen in this illustration taken, February 3, 2023. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo

It’s worth mentioning that OpenAI’s ChatGPT boasts around 180 million active users worldwide, solidifying its position as a leader in generative AI chatbots. Google’s Gemini, launched in late 2023 as the successor to LaMDA and PaLM 2, entered the scene with claims from Google’s parent company, Alphabet, that its “Gemini Ultra” outperformed OpenAI’s GPT-V4 in various text and multimodal functionalities. The recent outage of ChatGPT provided Gemini with an unexpected opportunity to gain traction among users seeking alternatives, and it will be interesting to see if this translates into sustained growth for Google’s conversational AI offering.

Gmail on Android might soon get a smarter upgrade with the rumored integration of Google‘s Gemini AI. This news comes from reliable sources who combed through the app’s code, uncovering a hidden Gemini button.

Gemini still might miss crucial information due to misinterpretations

Tapping this button could unleash a wave of helpful AI functionalities within Gmail. Imagine having Gemini summarize lengthy emails, highlighting key points, or even crafting draft replies for you. This feature aligns with functionalities already available to paying Google Workspace users.

While summarizing existing content is AI’s forte, it’s important to remember that AI isn’t flawless. There’s always a chance, however small, that Gemini might miss crucial information due to misinterpretations.

For truly mission-critical emails, a human touch remains irreplaceable. Unlike AI, we understand the context and nuances of our email exchanges, going beyond the analysis of word probabilities.

Logan Kilpatrick has been leading developer relations at OpenAI for the past one and a half years. He has supported developers building products with OpenAI API and ChatGPT for his time at OpenAI.

Google is aiming to build the best AI developer-centric team in the world

Logan Kilpatrick was invited to join Google by its executives including Sundar Pichai, Jeff Dean, Vice President of Product Mat Velloso, and Google Vice President Josh Woodward.

Now Logan has announced on Twitter / X that he has left OpenAI and joined Google to lead the product for Google AI Studio and support the Gemini API. “I’m not going to settle for anything less,” he noted.

His previous username on the platform was “Logan.GPT”. Not to mention, it has now been replaced by his name. The funny thing is that a user suggested “Logan Gemini” as a more relevant username.

As the Senior Developer Advocate at OpenAI, Logan has helped thousands of developers bring amazing products to reality. People like him are expected to prove to be a valuable addition to Google AI.

Notably, Google isn’t stopping here. They are looking for new talents to enrich their teams across many teams. Kilpatrick notes in one of his tweets “If you want to build cool stuff for devs, be on the edge, and support millions of developers, please ping me. We are hiring across many teams (eng, product, etc).” He is willing to have conversations with developers who are building something cool and interesting “If you’re working on something cool and want to chat, my DMs are open.”

The average reaction from people on Logan Joining Google is that Google AI should benefit from this addition. Brain Solis, the Head of Global Innovation at ServiceNow (a cloud computing platform that helps companies automate and digitize processes) congrats him saying it is a “Big win for Google”.

Before his time at OpenAI, Logan was an intern at NASA for more than 3 years, doing software data analysis research internships, Space Academy projects, and software engineering internships. He also worked at Apple for 1 year and 8 months as a software engineer and applied machine learning engineer.

Google Will Refine AI for Respectful and Accurate Representation

Google has acknowledged these issues, attributing them to challenges in fine-tuning the AI model to avoid inappropriate or biased representations while aiming for inclusivity. Despite efforts to mitigate problems observed in earlier image-generation technologies, the feature encountered significant hurdles. It sometimes produced unnecessary depictions or became overly cautious, failing to generate images for certain prompts.

Senior Vice President Prabhakar Raghavan explained that the aim is to rectify these issues with extensive improvements and testing before making the feature available again. He also noted the inherent challenges in ensuring AI reliability, especially regarding sensitive topics, highlighting the continuous efforts to enhance the technology’s accuracy.

Even public figures, including Elon Musk and Republican leader Vivek Ramaswamy, have criticized the feature for producing images that they claim are historically inaccurate and racially insensitive.

The suspension is part of Google’s broader efforts to responsibly develop AI technologies, acknowledging the complexities involved in creating AI systems that are both creative and accurate. The company has stated it is working diligently to address the recent issues and plans to re-release an improved version of the image generation feature soon.

Google also advises using Google Search for the most current and reliable information, which is sourced from a wide array of web resources through distinct systems.

Google made a major announcement yesterday, streamlining all of its AI efforts under a single name — Gemini. This means that Google’s AI chatbot, formerly known as Bard, is now referred to as Gemini, and the tech giant has also introduced its standalone Android app.

But do you recall Google’s announcement last year regarding its plan to imbue Android’s default Assistant with AI capabilities under the service named “Assistant with Bard”? With Bard now rebranded, there might be uncertainty about the fate of the Assistant’s AI services.

In response to this change, Google clarified to Android Authority that Gemini on Android is the experience that Assistant with Bard was meant to provide.

“The vision we shared in October remains the same — to build a true AI assistant that is conversational, multimodal, and helpful,” said a Google spokesperson.

“Now, with the incredible capabilities of Gemini, we can deliver on that vision in an even more profound and meaningful way. The technology allows us to push past the limits of what we could do before (timers, alarms, weather) to help you supercharge your ideas and collaborate directly with Google AI on your phone,” the spokesperson added.

In essence, the functionalities envisioned for “Assistant with Bard” are now fully integrated into Gemini for Android.

Google has already taken the initial steps towards this approach, as Gemini becomes the default Assistant on your Android after downloading the app from the Play Store. You can still switch back to the old Assistant in the settings if you prefer.

But Google is confident in Gemini powering the AI capabilities of Assistant going forward. This means that the “Assistant with Bard” name is now retired for good.

Google has taken the next big step in revamping its AI strategy by officially introducing Gemini, a unified AI platform that consolidates its previous efforts like the Bard chatbot and Duet AI. By rebranding and enhancing these services under the Gemini name, Google is making its intent clear – they are throwing it down in the AI sector, directly challenging the popularity of OpenAI‘s ChatGPT.

The Gemini AI has a whole new set of advanced features for users

The transformation into Gemini brings with it a suite of advanced features, extending Google’s AI capabilities to text, voice, and image interactions. With a dedicated app for Android users and integration into the Google app for Apple users, Gemini is set to become more accessible and user-friendly.

At the heart of Gemini’s new offerings is Gemini Ultra, available through Google One‘s AI Premium tier. For a monthly fee of $20, users gain access to advanced AI features, alongside the usual perks of Google One like additional cloud storage. This positions Gemini as a strong competitor to ChatGPT Plus, offering a richer package for the same price.

Google aims to make Gemini stand out by infusing it with a distinct personality. The goal is to move beyond the neutral tone typical of AI interactions, offering users a more engaging and dynamic experience. By understanding user intent and reacting with personality, Gemini hopes to carve out a unique space in the AI chatbot landscape.

Despite the upgrades, there’s a level of skepticism around the ability to distinguish large language models like Gemini from others, such as ChatGPT. The real challenge for Google lies in demonstrating clear advancements and convincing users of Gemini’s unique value proposition.

As Google rolls out Gemini, starting in the US and later expanding to the Asia Pacific region, the AI community and users worldwide are keen to see how this new contender fares against established players like ChatGPT. Google’s commitment to innovation in AI through Gemini marks an exciting chapter in the evolving story of artificial intelligence.

Gemini Nano is the smallest and most efficient AI model from Google. This model is designed to run locally on your phone and Pixel 8 Pro is the first smartphone to use it. And, since Gemini Nano runs locally on the smartphone, users need not be connected to the internet.

Pixel 8 Pro features powered by Gemini Nano

This local processing (currently) powers two new features for the Pixel 8 Pro:

Summarize in Recorder: This feature lets you automatically generate bullet-point summaries of audio recordings, enhancing productivity and information absorption.

Smart Reply in Gboard: This upgrade suggests contextually relevant replies within messaging apps, but currently is only limited to WhatsApp. However, Google plans to expand this feature to other apps soon. As Google says, Smart Reply saves you time by offering high-quality responses that are both conversational and contextually aware.

These features are part of the December Feature Drop, which also includes many other new additions (we’ll cover them in a separate article).

While the Tensor G3 chip currently has the exclusive power to run these AI features, it’s currently limited to the Pixel 8 Pro. However, we expect it to become available on the standard Pixel 8 soon, too.

Likewise, Google is also working to bring Gemini Nano ability to the entire Android system. They have launched a new system called AICore to help developers integrate Gemini-powered features into their apps.

While your phone will still need a powerful processor, Google confirms compatibility with processors from Qualcomm, Samsung, and MediaTek. Developers can already join Google’s early access program.

Google has been steadily adding new features to its AI chatbot, the Google Bard. However, it has not been a tough competitor for ChatGPT and other AI chatbots that are equipped with GPT-3 and GPT-4. Google has now revealed that the Gemini Pro, a brand-new AI model from Google, is now powering the Bard.

According to Google, the Gemini is the company’s most capable AI model that it has ever built. Built to run on systems like data centres to mobile devices, it can seamlessly process and integrate text, code, audio, images, and videos, making it a versatile AI model.

Gemini Nano, Pro, Ultra

Google Gemini

Google Gemini 1.0 can understand complex information and answer related questions due to its multimodal capabilities, and it comes in three distinct sizes: Gemini Ultra for demanding tasks, Gemini Pro for versatile usage, and Gemini Nano for streamlined on-device operations.

The Google Bard has now received its biggest upgrade as it is now updated with Gemini Pro, which means it can do more advanced reasoning, planning, understanding, and so on. It will be available in English in more than 170 countries and territories. The Pixel 8 Pro will soon receive an update to run Gemini Nano, which will bring features like Summarize in the Recorder app, Smart Reply in Gboard, and WhatsApp.

Speaking of Gemini Ultra, it can perform a wide range of tasks, including natural image, audio, and video understanding, mathematical reasoning, and multimodal problem-solving. According to Google, it has surpassed human experts on MMLU, a benchmark that assesses both knowledge and problem-solving abilities, and achieved an exceptional score on MMMU, a multimodal reasoning benchmark. Additionally, Ultra has outperformed previous models on image benchmarks without the need for object character recognition, showcasing its native multimodality and complex reasoning capabilities.

Google plans to make Gemini Ultra available to a select group of users for early testing and feedback before a broader rollout to developers and enterprise customers in early 2024. Additionally, Bard Advanced, a new AI experience powered by Gemini Ultra, will be launching in early 2024 to provide users with access to cutting-edge capabilities.

In addition, Google has introduced Cloud TPU v5p, the most powerful TPU system to date, enabling faster training of large-scale generative AI models and accelerating the development of new products and capabilities. To safeguard against harmful content, Gemini employs dedicated safety classifiers to identify, label, and filter out harmful content, such as violence and negative stereotypes. This layered approach ensures Gemini’s safety and inclusivity for all users.

Google has postponed the release of its next-generation AI chatbot, Gemini, until early next year, according to a new report by Sammobile. The company had initially planned to unveil Gemini in November 2023, but internal testing revealed that the chatbot struggled with certain non-English queries.

Gemini, touted as Google’s most powerful conversational AI to date, was poised to make its debut at a series of events in California, New York, and Washington, D.C.

However, Google CEO Sundar Pichai made the decision to delay the launch after discovering that Gemini’s performance with non-English queries fell short of expectations.

Global language support is crucial for Google’s ambition to position Gemini as a superior alternative to OpenAI’s GPT-4. Until Gemini can demonstrate proficiency in handling non-English queries, Google believes it’s premature to introduce it to the wider market.

Despite the delay, Google remains confident in Gemini’s potential to outpace GPT-4. In private tests, Gemini has reportedly outperformed GPT-4, thanks to its superior computational power.

Google CEO Pichai has emphasized the company’s commitment to delivering a “competitive and state-of-the-art” product with Gemini 1.0.

Google Vice President Sissie Hsiao provided an example of Gemini’s capabilities: “I’ve seen some pretty amazing things. Like, if I’m trying to bake a cake, draw me 3 pictures of the steps to how to ice a three-layer cake, and Gemini will create those images. These are completely novel pictures, not just pictures from the internet.”
