Huawei had launched the P50 and P50 Pro smartphones in the month of July. The Huawei P50 Pro 4G comes in two different models — one powered by the Kirin 9000 SoC while the other one is powered by the Snapdragon 888 chipset.

Now, the Huawei P50 Pro 4G powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC is finally available for purchase in China. It is being offered in three colors — Snow White, Obsidian Black, and Cocoa Tea Gold.

The 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage model is priced at 5,988 yuan (~$941) while the other model which packs 8GB RAM and 256GB internal storage costs 6,488 yuan which roughly converts to $1,019.

Coming to the specifications, the device features a 6.6-inch curved OLED display with a 2700 x 1228 pixels screen resolution, offering a 120Hz refresh rate, 1440Hz PWM dimming, and a 300Hz touch sampling rate.

Under the hood, the smartphone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset but the model is limited to only 4G connectivity because of the sanctions imposed on Huawei by the United States, barring it from using 5G connectivity, among others.

In the camera department, there’s a 50-megapixel f/1.8 RGB primary sensor with OIS and a 40-megapixel f/1.6 Black and White sensor. There’s also a 13-megapixel f/2.2 ultrawide angle camera and a 64-megapixel f/3.5 telephoto camera with OIS.

On the front side, the device features a 13-megapixel snapper for taking selfies and video calling. Unlike most other phones, this one is running the company’s own HarmonyOS 2 out-of-the-box. It is powered by a 4,360mAh battery which comes with support for 66W fast wired charging and 50W wireless fast charging.

Since the official release of the HarmonyOS system, Huawei has started the largest system upgrade plan in its history covering a slew of devices. It has been named very aptly as the ‘100 device renewal plan’, and covers a multitude of older models with the goal of helping users with older devices experience the new OS.

Huawei’s official HarmonyOS account on Weibo today made a new post today announcing that six more devices including the Huawei nova 8 SE have been updated to HarmonyOS 2. These six devices include both smartphones and tablets and have been listed below:

• Huawei nova 8 SE Vitality Edition
• Huawei Tablet M5 Youth Edition 8 inches
• Huawei Tablet M5 Youth 10.1 inches
• Huawei Enjoy Tablet 10.1 inches
• Honor Tablet 5 10.1 inches
• Honor Tablet 5 8 inches

According to feedback from many users earlier, your old phone will not only get several new features but also get a noticeable boost to performance and fluency, making it feel just like new again. It is, therefore, highly recommended to upgrade your device to the same. To do so, head over to Settings > System and Updates > Software Update > Check for Updates.

If you haven’t received it yet, you might want to head over to the My Huawei app and check out the ‘Upgrade Early Access’ section. Do keep in mind that these steps are only valid for users in China as of now as that’s where the rollout is being done. Global users will likely have to wait a while.

HarmonyOS has now reached a total of 141 devices, including mobile phones, TVs, and tablets, and more are to follow.

Huawei has been rolling out HarmonyOS 2 for eligible devices for the past few months. Almost all the devices released in recent years have been updated to the stable channel. Hence, the company has now started pushing the latest software to even older devices.

According to the official Weibo account of HarmonyOS, Huawei has now begun to seed HarmonyOS 2 stable update for smartphones like the HUAWEI Mate9 series, HUAWEI P10 series, HUAWEI nova 3 series, HONOR Play, and more. The update is also being rolled out to select older tablets.

HarmonyOS 2 introduced a new feature called Super Device. This lets users connect with smart devices in an intuitive manner. The HUAWEI FreeBuds Pro finally adds support for it.

Huawei is known for its Multi Screen Collaboration feature that allows users to sync their smartphones with computers for a better multitasking experience. The company combined this feature with ‘Super Device’ with the release of Harmony OS 2.

Super Device is now the gateway to connect with Huawei ecosystem products on Harmony OS.  Users need to simply drag and drop the devices that they want to make a connection to.

With the new firmware update, the HUAWEI FreeBuds Pro are finally compatible with Super Device. Thanks to this, users have to now merely drag the icon of the truly wireless earphones to the device they want to connect the earbuds with. The new feature does not hinder the dual-connection option. Hence, that will also work as intended. 

In order to experience Super Device with HUAWEI FreeBuds Pro, the TWS should be on firmware version 536 or higher and the smartphone should be running HarmonyOS 2.0.0.135 or higher. Lastly, it also requires HUAWEI ID and a WiFi connection.

Huawei is still facing issues with smartphone manufacturing because of the US imposed sanctions and thus, the China-based technology giant has shifted its focus to other products and developing next-gen technologies.

In line with that, it seems that the brand has launched the Huawei Sound SE speaker in its home market, which comes with a starting price of 799 yuan, approximately $124.

The Huawei Sound SE speakers come in two different color options — Bright Black and White Gold. It uses six-unit four speakers which includes three full-range speakers, one woofer, and two passive radiators. It also supports Devialet Push-Push acoustic architecture, Devialet SAM technology, Devialet joint tuning algorithm, and more.

As for the connectivity options, the new speaker supports Bluetooth 4.2 and Wi-Fi. There’s also 3.5mm AUX-in audio input but it doesn’t support stereo sound. It also comes with support for DLNA/QPlay playback.

Powering the Huawei Sound SE speaker is the company’s own HarmonyOS 2 which also supports features like touch pass and voice control through several different voice assistants available in the market.

It also supports a quick connection feature with other smart devices, including smart screens, tablets, and more. When the speaker is placed near other devices, it’ll automatically detect them and push a pop-up connection window, without the need for installing any application on the device.

This Huawei Sound SE speaker has been priced at 899 yuan (~$139) but is currently available at a discounted price of 799 yuan, which roughly converts to $124.

Huawei first announced the rollout of the HarmonyOS 2 in June this year with the OS expected to be used on various smart devices stretching beyond smartphones. The number of users who had upgraded to HarmonyOS 2 exceeded 10 million in just one week and by about half of the month it was launched, the user base had surpassed 18 million. It reached 30 million in just one month and barely two months after the rollout, the embattled Chinese company disclosed that the userbase has crossed 40 million which it claims represents an average of 8 users upgrading every second.

The tech giant has now revealed that the userbase has exceeded 70 million devices which means about 30 million users joined in August alone. At this pace, we expect the HarmonyOS 2 user base to break the 100 million mark within the year.

In addition, the custom OS is said to be installed in about 100 different models ranging from smartphones, smartwatches, smart TVs, tablets, routers, and more. The OS is also installed on Honor models that were released before Huawei sold off the Honor brand. Another thing is most of the users are in China but Huawei has started rolling out the HarmonyOS 2 to users outside China.

Ever since Huawei kicked off its proprietary OS, the HarmonyOS for its phones in 2019, the OS has continued to develop. Back in June, the second iteration of the OS, the HarmonyOS 2 was pushed for many Huawei devices. Today, Huawei has officially confirmed that the Harmony OS 2 is installed on over 40 million devices.

If you are unaware, the software was booting on over 10 million devices within a week of its launch. News broke out that within a month it was booting on over 25 million Huawei phones. Now, with the 40 million milestone, Huawei’s HarmonyOS has accomplished a higher position across phone operating systems.

At this pace, the OS seems to compete head-to-head with other operating systems. Huawei has also been adding open source components to the OS and it had recently added 400+ open source components.

Apart from this, Huawei is expected to bring the HarmonyOS 2 on all of its smartphones. Some of the premium phones to get the update would be Huawei’s Mate 40 series, P40 series, Nova8 phones, MateX2, and MatePad Pro.

Today, the flagship Huawei P50 was also launched with the same HarmonyOS version. Speaking of its specs, the series includes P50 and P50 Pro models with Huawei-only Snapdragon 888 4G chipset. Some units are also powered by a Kirin 9000 processor with up to 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.

Huawei officially unveiled the latest version of its proprietary operating system HarmonyOS 2 on June 2. This iteration comes with several interesting features including cross-platform usage. At the unveiling, the company announced the upgrade plan for HarmonyOS 2 and not only supports the latest flagship models such as the Huawei Mate 40 series but also covers a large number of mid-to-high-end models and entry-level models. Even the Mate 9 that was released five years ago did not miss out on this upgrade.

Thus, it wasn’t surprising when the company disclosed just days after the launch that the OS has been installed in over 10 million devices. Huawei has now given an update of that information, disclosing that the HarmonyOS 2 has been installed in over 25 million devices globally. We expect the figure to increase exponentially as Huawei pushes the update to more models. The company plans to upgrade up to 100 models but at present, the new HarmonyOS 2 has only been pushed to 69 models since released.

According to Huawei’s official plan, the Mate Xs, Mate 20 series, Nova 6/7/8 series, and Huawei MatePad will be updated in the third quarter of 2021. In the fourth quarter, the upgrade will be extended to Huawei Smart Screen V series 2021, Smart Screen S series, Smart Screen X65, Mate 20 X series, P30 series, Mate X, Huawei Enjoy 20 series, Huawei Maimang 9, Huawei Tab M6,  Enjoy Tablet 2 and so on.

Furthermore, Huawei’s upgrade schedule shows that by the first half of 2022, Huawei Mate 10 series, P20 series, nova5 series, Mate 9 series, P10 series, Huawei Smart Screen V series, Huawei Tab M5, Enjoy Tablet and others will equally receive the HarmonyOS 2 push.

With this schedule, the Chinese company projects that the new OS will be installed on up to 100 devices ranging from smartphones, tablets, smart screens, to other smart terminals. The company had in January this year projected that the user base of HarmonyOS would have reached 300 million by December 2021. If that isn’t achieved this year, it will be a sure thing next year. Apart from its own devices, HoarmonyOS is open for use by other OEMs. We have already seen Mideo launch a couple of HarmonyOS 2-running smart gadgets.

Earlier today (5th July 2021), Huawei announced on its official Weibo account, a Chinese microblogging website, that it will be launching the new MatePad 11 on 6th of July 2021. The upcoming tablet will also arrive with support for HarmonyOS 2.0.

Back in June 2021, the Chinese tech giant held the HarmonyOS 2.0 and new product launch conference, which also had the brand unveil its new MatePad tablets that are equipped with the proprietary operating system. While the top of the model was a 12.6 MatePad Pro, Huawei had also teased the arrival of a 11 inch tablet as well. We had previously reported on rumors that the company would be launching this device on June 6, which has now been officially confirmed.

Unfortunately, the company’s announcement of the tablet’s launch date did not include any finer details regarding its specifications. Although, we do have some information from past reports to go on at the moment. As per these reports, the MatePad 11 will launch with an 11 inch panel on the front that supports 120Hz high refresh rate and features 2.5K resolution. Under the hood, the device is expected to sport the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC.

For memory, the firm will launch the tablet in multiple storage variants, including a 64GB, 128GB, and even 256GB version that can be further expanded via a microSD card slot. Other features include support for WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0. Huawei is also expected to launch the MatePad 11 in four color variants in China. Earlier this month, Huawei had announced its latest version of its proprietary operating system, HarmonyOS 2.0. And now, the number of products that upgraded to the new OS has apparently already crossed 10 million in just a week.

With the release of HarmonyOS, the Chinese tech giant also announced a number of smartphone models and other products that would receive this update. According to a QQ report, news had initially surfaced that the company managed to bring in over 10 million devices to the new operating system by some netizens. But now, internal staff members of Huawei have apparently made the news official and confirmed this report.

As of right now, it is estimated that there are about 200 million smartphones from the brand in circulation all across the globe. Furthermore, most of these models would be eligible for the upgrade to the newly launched HarmonyOS (also known as HongMengOS in China). So, we can expect this number to rise even further as more models become eligible for the new update.

Notably, the company had built HarmonyOS with cross platform and multi device support integration. In other words, the operating system from the consumer electronics maker will also make its way into a number of smart products, including IoT (Internet of things) and even smart home appliances as well.

Huawei launched its HarmonyOS 2.0 platform at its annual Huawei Developer Conference (HDC) 2020 conference in China today. The company’s rotating CEO, Richard Yu, confirmed at the event that Huawei will release HarmonyOS powered smartphones in 2021. The first beta release of HarmonyOS for smartphones will be available in December 2020 for developers.

Until now, Huawei had denied that it was planning to use HarmonyOS on smartphones. The company said that the OS was developed for smart devices and it didn’t have any plans to release it for phones anytime soon. But it looks like the increasing pressure from the US ban has forced the company to fast track the development of its own OS for smartphones.

Since May 2019, Huawei is barred from using Google Mobile Services that power Android phones across the world. And last month, after the US failed to renew its Temporary General License (TGL), the company lost access to Google’s support and updates to older devices. While Huawei confirmed that security updates will continue to roll out to its older devices, it still marked a big blow to the company’s smartphone strategy.

Huawei will release the HarmonyOS 2.0 beta version for smartphones with SDK, Documentation, Tool, and Simulator to developers in December 2020. The company adds that we can expect smartphones running on HarmonyOS in 2021.

Richard Yu reveals that the initial version of HarmonyOS 2.0 will support devices with 128KB to 128MB of RAM. In April 2021, Huawei plans to add support for larger RAM devices between 128MB and 4GB. Finally, in October 2021, the company will add support for devices with 4+ GB RAM. This roadmap is for the HarmonyOS 2.0 version and not specifically for the smartphone OS. But it hints that the first batch of HarmonyOS smartphones may be targeted at the budget or mid-range segment with less than 4GB of RAM.

Note that Huawei’s HarmonyOS is an open-source platform, similar to Android. So you can consider Huawei’s relationship with HarmonyOS similar to Google’s relationship with Android. Even though Huawei will develop HarmonyOS, since it’s an open-source platform, Huawei is likely hoping that other companies can use it on their own devices in the future.

Now that it aims to take on Google’s Android with its own OS, the next few months will be extremely interesting. It remains to be seen if HarmonyOS powered smartphones can coexist with its Android competitors next year.
