Red, a company which has its roots in digital cameras for movie productions, has already announced its first smartphone — Red Hydrogen One, an innovative phone that will make it stand out from the crowd.

Now, after a wait of more than a year, the smartphone is almost here. It is scheduled to go on sale in the United States through AT&T and Verizon from 2nd November. It is priced at $1,245 and both companies are offering monthly payment plans.

The retail pricing of the phone is $100 more expensive than it was for the buyers who pre-ordered the device when the company first announced its plan for the phone. The Hydrogen One was supposed to launch in early 2018 but it was pushed back multiple times.

The Red Hydrogen One’s highlight is a proprietary display technology known as ‘4-view’ (4V), which is said to provide a hologram-like experience. People who have used the phone says that it’s an interesting effect despite nothing actually popping out of the display.

For the company’s display technology to reach its full potential, it’ll require support for other developers. Regular movies won’t be viewable in 4V since they need to be made specifically for it. But the company is offering a handful of 4V-compatible movies and plans to extend the catalog to more than 100 titles in the future.

As the phone’s launch was pushed back multiple times, the phone is launching with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset, which powered last year’s flagship devices, instead of the Snapdragon 845 which is present in current flagships.

The phone features a 5.7-inch Quad HD LTPS-TFT display that offer 2560 x 1440 pixels screen resolution and has Gorilla Glass 3 protection. It packs 6GB of RAM with 128GB storage while the Titanium version comes with 6GB of RAM and 256GB internal storage.

It runs Android 8.1 Oreo operating system out-of-the-box and there’s a side-mounted fingerprint sensor for added protection. The device drives power from a 4,500mAh battery. While there’s no mention of any fast charging technology, it should at least support Quick Charge 3.0.

Even after a year of taking pre-orders, RED is unable to deliver the Hydrogen One titanium version. Talking about the delay in a forum post, Red Digital Cinema founder and chief executive officer Jim Jannard admits that “the first run of Ti [was] a disaster.” On the other hand, Hydrogen One Aluminum version will start shipping by the end of October. RED is facing some production hurdles which has led to some delays in the shipping date.

Unlike the Aluminium version, RED Hydrogen One Ti has not received any launch timeline, despite ordering it 14 months ago. RED is usually known for its cinematic-quality cameras. Many popular titles were shot using the RED cameras. Red Hydrogen One is the company’s first approach to enter into the smartphone market.

In order to settle down the customers for some time, RED has decided to offer an aluminum version free of cost to the Ti variant buyers. Talking about it, Jim Jannard CEO of Red Digital Cinema, added that later they would ship the Titanium version also without any additional cost.

According to the company’s CEO, Jim Jannard, suppliers assured the RED that they would provide enough material to fulfill preorders of the Ti model. Later, it turned out differently, and the production of the Ti model is now delayed again. Now, CEO has not given any particular date but aims to fulfill all the Hydrogen One titanium pre-orders.

Additionally, along with the standard specs, it carries a cinematic quality camera and Holographic 3D display. Users who are still interested in buying the Hydrogen One aluminum version can purchase it starting November 2 via AT&T and Verizon in the US.

Last year, professional camera maker RED, announced its own modular smartphone – the HYDROGEN One. The phone which is priced between $1200 to $1500 awas available for pre-order last summer with a 2018 release date. New details have now surfaced about the phone.

Founder of the company, Jim Janard said in a forum post that he and the President of the company, Jarred Land, are both using working  prototypes of the HYDROGEN One with serial numbers EVT1-0001 and EVT1-0002 respectively.

One of the unique selling points of the HYDROGEN One apart from its modularity is its display. Apart from being able to run in regular 2D mode like most smartphones, it can also run in a 4View mode (holographic).

According to Jim Janard, it is a “better than 3D” image that doesn’t require glasses. He says in the post that everyone who has seen the screen (in this mode) has been blown away.

For modularity, the HYDROGEN One has a set of pogo pins similar to the Lenovo Moto Z series. These pins will connect to modules that adds an additional battery or cinema-grade camera amongst others to the phone.

The good news is that the RED HYDROGEN One will be available to carriers. However, availability will be dependent on how soon a carrier certifies the phone. Due to that, estimated ship date for carrier-versions will likely be in the summer. Nevertheless, those who pre-ordered will get theirs unlocked and shipped to them earlier than that.

RED also revealed that they are planning a HYDROGEN Day at their studios probably in April where the technology behind 4View (4V) will be demonstrated.

RED’s target market for its phone are those involved in content creation, so if you do not fall into this category it may not be justifiable spending over a $1000 purchasing it.
