The electric car has a 64.8-kilowatt-hour battery.

The 2024 Kona Electric showcases a slightly larger 64.8-kilowatt-hour battery, a minor but meaningful increase from the previous 64 kWh capacity. This enhancement results in a modest boost in range, offering 261 miles on a single charge according to EPA estimates. This increase, though seemingly small, indicates Hyundai’s commitment to incremental progress in EV technology.

However, it’s not just about longer distances. The new Kona Electric also introduces improvements in efficiency, although it’s marginally less energy-efficient than its predecessor. With an energy consumption rate of 116 MPGe, or about 291 watt-hours per mile, it’s a slight uptick in energy use. This could be attributed to the vehicle’s larger dimensions, including a longer wheelbase and increased width, potentially affecting aerodynamics.

Charging time sees a substantial improvement, thanks to a more powerful 10.8-kW on-board charger, reducing full charging time by about three hours. Additionally, DC fast charging is faster, taking 43 minutes to reach 80% charge.

The 2024 model introduces new features like the i-Pedal mode for one-pedal driving and a Smart Regenerative System that adapts to traffic conditions. These innovations, along with Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, highlight Hyundai’s focus on enhancing the driver experience in electric mobility.

While pricing remains unannounced, it’s expected to be in line with the outgoing model, making it a competitive option in the EV market. However, the lack of eligibility for the $7,500 federal tax credit for imported EVs is a notable drawback. But with the discontinuation of Chevrolet Bolt EV, the Kona Electric has an opportunity to capture a significant portion of the entry-level EV segment.

What’s the big deal? Hyundai’s EVs, including the much-anticipated Ioniq series, will now gain access to Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network. With over 12,000 Superchargers across North America, Hyundai is effectively doubling its DC fast-charging options for its customers. José Muñoz, CEO of Hyundai Motor North America, believes this collaboration will make life easier for Hyundai EV owners, promising access to a whopping 30,000 stations across the continent.

But Hyundai isn’t putting all its eggs in Tesla’s basket. The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) has added three electric cars to its Top Safety Pick+ list for 2023: Genesis Electrified GV70, Hyundai Ioniq 6, and Lexus RZ 450e. The car incorporates a lot of elements from the Ioniq 5

One of the highlights of the revamped Kona Electric is its aerodynamic design. Its nose is sleeker and the LED daytime running lights now span the full width of the car. But if you’re looking for revolutionary changes in its overall appearance, you might be a bit disappointed. The side profile has incorporated some elements from the Ioniq 5, but the resemblance is faint at best.

Performance-wise, the 2024 Kona Electric seems to have only incremental improvements. The vehicle boasts a drag coefficient of 0.27, compared to 0.29 of its predecessor, aiming for a smoother ride. The battery pack has grown, albeit slightly, from 64 kWh to 64.8 kWh, pushing the range from 258 miles to an estimated 260 miles. In terms of charging, you can now get from a 10% to 80% charge in 43 minutes, an uptick but not a game-changer.

The interior adds some new features like dual 12.3-inch screens for the infotainment and gauge cluster, as well as ambient lighting. Yet, the Kona Electric is still based on Hyundai’s K3 platform, originally intended for gas vehicles, instead of the advanced Electric-Global Modular Architecture (E-GMP) seen in newer models like the Ioniq 5.

Orders for the new Kona Electric Vehicle will open in late fall 2023, with pricing yet to be announced. It will be manufactured in both South Korea and Czechia, and it’s clear that while Hyundai’s best-selling EV remains the Ioniq 5, they hope the Kona will find its own niche.

Hyundai Motors Takes Control of Fast Charger Production to Rev Up Its E-Pit Network

Hyundai Motor Group is shifting gears in its strategy for electric vehicle (EV) charging, planning to build its own high-speed DC chargers rather than relying solely on external vendors. Hyundai Kefico Corp., a subsidiary mainly focused on engine and transmission components, is on the cusp of rolling out its Blue Plug-branded chargers capable of delivering a staggering 350 kilowatts.

Initially, these in-house chargers will power the E-pit ultra-fast charging network in South Korea. Launched in April 2021, the E-pit network is still in its infancy, featuring 36 stations, a modest number when compared to Tesla’s 106 Supercharging sites in the country. One obstacle to E-pit’s expansion has been the substantial cost of procuring chargers from third-party suppliers.

Hyundai is aiming to eliminate this bottleneck by making its own chargers. Industry estimates suggest an average cost of $113,000 for an individual fast charger, a figure that Hyundai hopes to slash by controlling the entire manufacturing process. While the brand has not confirmed if these chargers will be exported, it’s clear that this move aligns Hyundai with Tesla’s successful strategy of in-house charger production.

While this pivot makes sense for Hyundai, it spells potential trouble for existing E-pit suppliers like SK Signet and EVSIS Co. It also hints at deeper shifts within the company’s electrification strategy, especially considering the recent end of a year-long partnership with Daeyoung Chaevi, which operated E-pit systems and chargers.

Ultimately, the decision to go in-house with charger production could be a game-changer for Hyundai, helping it to quickly ramp up its E-pit network and be more competitive in the EV space. Hyundai is Riding the EV Wave with Big Sales Numbers for July 2023

Hyundai Motor Company is driving the path of change, with July 2023 figures showcasing its robust growth in the electric vehicle (EV) sector. With a 1.2 percent increase in global vehicle sales compared to the previous year, and a notable 24 percent rise in all-electric car volume, Hyundai is demonstrating its dedication to eco-friendly mobility.

The company’s sales increase is way more than last year, 5.8 percent to be precise

The South Korean automaker’s emphasis on Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) is apparent. Wholesale shipments of these green options reached 23,769 units, making up 7.1 percent of the total sales. This figure represents a significant increase from 5.8 percent a year ago.

The Hyundai brand, a driving force behind the company’s plug-in car sales, noted a 28 percent year-over-year boost in wholesale shipments. Notably, two models, Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6, based on the innovative E-GMP platform, constitute close to two-thirds of Hyundai’s entire BEV volume.

Genesis, the luxury sub-brand, is also making strides despite a third consecutive year-over-year decrease in all-electric cars. Their year-to-date volume is still up 21 percent, showing promise in this burgeoning market.

The introduction of the all-new, sporty Hyundai Ioniq 5 N hints at Hyundai’s forward-thinking attitude. Although only 10 units were exported from South Korea, it marks a significant step in diversifying the company’s electric portfolio.

However, not everything is accelerating. The hydrogen fuel cell model, Hyundai NEXO, dropped by 38 percent, reflecting the challenges faced in the still-evolving fuel cell market.

Hyundai BEVs see Record-Breaking Sales Performance in the US

Hyundai Motor America’s vehicle sales have surged, hitting 66,527 units in July, marking a 10% rise compared to last year. The automaker has managed to sell a total of 461,140 units from January to July, experiencing a 14% year-over-year boost. The highlight, however, is the exceptional performance of Hyundai’s electric vehicles, specifically, its E-GMP-based models. In July alone, sales skyrocketed to three times last year’s performance, setting a new record for the company.

Considering Hyundai is still developing The Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 were at the forefront of this surge, selling a combined total of 5,880 units, which represents a whopping 197% increase from last year and makes up 8.8% of Hyundai’s total vehicle sales in July. Furthermore, both the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 reached their own individual sales records in July, with 4,135 and 1,745 units sold, respectively. The Tucson PHEV also set a monthly sales record, underscoring Hyundai’s green revolution.

“Hyundai continues to impress with its eco-friendly product range, including the IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6, and our HEV and PHEV vehicles. Hyundai May Establish Another Electric Vehicle Factory in Canada

Furthermore, the year-to-date results are even more impressive, with a remarkable 15 percent increase compared to the previous year, reaching a total of 394,613 units sold.

In June, Hyundai sold a total of 4,298 units of its Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 models, representing a remarkable 51 percent increase compared to the same period last year. This exceptional performance also set a new monthly record for the company. The sales figures for the Ioniq 5 crossover/SUV and Ioniq 6 sedan were particularly noteworthy, with 3,136 and 1,162 units sold, respectively.

What makes these sales figures even more remarkable is the absence of the $7,500 federal tax credit for new purchases, making Hyundai’s achievement even more impressive. The real question is how Samsung will respond to this situation. Of course, the main reason for the change in rankings is due to Hyundai Motor’s success. However, Samsung has been unable to overcome its long-standing profitability issues. Recent developments are being interpreted by many as a sign that change is on the horizon and that the company needs to adapt.

Hyundai Motor Group Ties up With LG Uplus for Wireless Communication Services

According to reports, the Hyundai Motor Group has collaborated with LG Uplus Corporation, the third-largest mobile carrier service provider in South Korea, to offer a unique solution for wireless communication in cars. According to reports, the company would cooperate with Hyundai under a long-term contract they both signed. The agreement relates to the communication service, and because of it, we might see improvements in Hyundai cars as early as next year.

A linked automobile is a car that has a wireless communications network attached to its system, allowing it to be remotely managed and enable numerous infotainment applications. It has been reported that LG has agreements with Kia Corp. and Genesis, two other major automakers. In accordance with the contract, LG will only offer connectivity services to the three brands for their linked vehicles. The length and cost of the contract were not disclosed by either party.

Hyundai Motors is currently receiving wireless services from the brands like SK Telecom Co. and KT Corp. The deal with other brands may or may not get affected because of the latest agreement signed between LG and Hyundai.

LG Uplus will start exclusively supplying wireless communication services to Hyundai starting January 2023. Connected cars coming from the house of Hyundai after Jan ’23 are expected to utilize LG’s wireless communication services.

Hyundai launched its first electric sedan earlier this morning. The South Korean automaker has officially named the EV, the Ioniq 6.

The brand’s entry into the EV Sedan segment is a bid to create a better market positioning for the brand as well as gain a larger share in the EV market which is dominated by Tesla Inc.

The Ioniq 6’s 77.4-kilowatt-hour battery allows it to drive up to 610 kilometers (379 miles) on a single charge, compared to 429 kilometers for the Hyundai Ioniq 5.

In terms of design aesthetics, the EV gives you a resemblance to the Porsche Carrera 911S Turbo from the back. The new EV employs a streamlined design concept officially known as “Electrified Streamliner” in terms of exterior design. The front sports a coupe-style C-pillar design, an electronic rearview mirror with a camera, and a closed front design.

In terms of power, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 is expected to come in single-motor rear-wheel drive and dual-motor four-wheel drive configurations. The most powerful model has approximately 300 horsepower, a pure electric range of up to 610 kilometers, and energy consumption of approximately 14 kWh/100 kilometers.

Production will begin this year in the third quarter. Sales in the United States will begin in early 2023, with a larger rollout to follow.

Hyundai is to invest 95.5 trillion won ($73 billion) on electrification this decade, launching at least 17 new models between now and 2030 and aiming for annual sales of 1.87 million EVs by the end of the decade. The company aims for a 7% share of the global EV market by 2030 and an 11% share in the US. The Ioniq 6 arrives around seven and a half months after Hyundai Motor Group subsidiary Kia introduced its latest Niro electric SUV.

According to BloombergNEF data, Hyundai and Kia sold approximately 123,000 battery-powered and plug-in hybrid EVs in the first half of this year, putting them third on the world’s top EV-maker list behind Tesla and BYD Co. The region of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa accounted for approximately 60% of their sales, while Kia has become the second-most popular EV brand in the United States this year.

Hyundai launches driverless ride-hailing service in Seoul, South Korea

Automaker Hyundai has introduced its Level 4 autonomous RoboRide service in the Gangnam district of Seoul, South Korea. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is at the heart of the deployment and will see a safety driver present for now.

Seoul’s Mayor and another city official were the first passengers in the new ride-hailing service in the Gangnam district. They were taken along a route in the district which is the only location for the service in Korea. There are no details as of now on when Hyundai will discontinue the presence of a safety driver in the RoboRide in Korea. The Ioniq 5 autonomous vehicles can accommodate up to three passengers at a time.

The Hyundai-powered RoboRide service in Korea will only be available to company employees at the start. The hailing is achieved using the i.M app, similar to the ones used by Waymo or Cruise. The i.M app was developed by Jin Mobility and it will rely heavily on AI. The Ioniq 5 itself is based on Hyundai’s Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS). There are no indications of how long this pilot RoboRide service will last in Korea. The company feels this milestone is an important inflection point as it continues to internalize autonomous driving technology.

There are twenty-five districts in Seoul and the RoboRide is only active in just one. This is because the traffic lights in the other districts are not yet capable of communicating with self-driving vehicles. The data that will be gathered from the pilot scheme will aid Hyundai in integrating several components in the production of autonomous vehicles.

Hyundai converts the Ionic 5 into a giant air purifier to prove its recyclability

Korean automaker Hyundai has converted one of its prototype electric vehicles, the Ionic 5 EV into a massive air purifier. The giant air purifier was produced by an Ionic 5 unit that was slated for the slaughter slab, but the company’s engineers were able to conceptualize an air purifier built from the components of the Ionic 5 with a mix of the tech aspects of the demobilized EV.

EV makers are increasingly concerned about what to make of abandoned EVs or components no longer functional. This also applies to prototypes which are a culmination of the development of final EV products. In the course of developing a new car, automakers often build several prototypes, most of which cannot progress to finished products or are legally permitted to drive on public roads. These units then have to be destroyed in an efficient and environmentally friendly manner. Some of the prototypes however continue to go through development.

The giant air purifier was showcased in a recent Hyundai promo video where the Ionic 5 was first reduced completely to its parts, which were then used to craft the giant air purifier. The air purifier is however unlikely to proceed to a commercial product. It seems Hyundai is only showcasing the air purifier as evidence of its innovative engineering team and to show that the parts used on the Ionic 5 are almost entirely recyclable.

Hyundai unveils new concept electric SUV with an interior that might as well be a living room

Hyundai revealed a new concept EV at the 2021 Los Angeles Auto Show named ‘Seven’, and it’s a great demo of how the automobile maker’s scalable EV platform can be stretched to accommodate large SUVs. The SUV is built on E-GMP (Electric-Global Modular Platform), which is also being used in the upcoming Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, and Genesis GV60 EVs.

The Hyundai Seven is one of the largest-ever concept vehicles from the company with a wheelbase that stretches 10.5 feet (via The Verge). For comparison, the Cadillac Escalade’s wheelbase stands at 9.6 feet. The vehicle’s battery is capable of being filled up from 10 percent to 80 percent in just 20 minutes using a 350kW charger. A range of over 300 miles (483km) is also being targeted.

Features such as coach-style doors, adjustable seating, and retractable controls are also being offered, giving us a look into Hyundai’s offerings from the future. All in all, the interior is not unlike a little living room with furniture that can be moved around. Other car companies like BMW, Volvo, and Audi, have already projected similar ideas with car interiors transformed into “third places” in which one can work, eat, socialize, and even sleep.

Hyundai has also put a lot of emphasis on hygiene with the Seven to help people keep their cars sanitized in a post-pandemic world. Accordingly, the interior uses plenty of renewable and recycled materials like bamboo, along with copper and hygienically treated fabric. There even are UVC lights that sterilize everything once everyone leaves the vehicle.

The Hyundai Seven is obviously just a concept and will not be going into production anytime soon. However, considering the company does have a good record converting concepts into reality, seeing the Seven on the road in the coming years isn’t too far-fetched. For reference, Hyundai’s 45 concept had eventually become the Ioniq 5.

Global EV sales set a new record: 3 million units sold in first three quarters of 2021

New data shows that global EV sales in the first three quarters of this year exceeded 3 million for the first time, with South Korea seeing a 96% surge.

Korea Automotive Technology Institute (KAII) (via Just Auto) reports that South Korea ranked as the seventh-largest market for EVs. The country is topped firstly by China with its 1.76 million sales figure, followed by the US with 272,554 units, Germany with 243,892 units, the UK with 131,832 units, France with 114,836 units, and lastly Norway with 84,428 units.

In this time period, electric car sales amounted to about 5.5 percent of the South Korean automobile market, compared to 9.4 percent in China and 2.3 percent in the United States.

The research institute further revealed that Tesla was the largest EV manufacturer in the first three quarters of 2021, with sales of over 625,624 electric vehicles. Its share of the total EV sales figure exceeded 20%.

In addition to Tesla, SAIC, Volkswagen, BYD and other manufacturers’ electric vehicles also saw good sales up to Q3 this year. Among them, SAIC sold over 413,037 units, Volkswagen sold 287,852 units, and BYD sold 189751 during the same period.

Korean Hyundai Motor Group’s electric sales also saw a boom, rising by 67% in 9 months to 159,558 units, making it the fifth-largest EV maker in the world.

The sales of EVs is expected to rise further in the coming years owing to the drop in EV prices, increase in performance, and improved range.

Hyundai’s Genesis to launch electric version of its GV70 SUV in China this week

Hyundai‘s luxury car brand spin off, Genesis, has revealed that it will be launching the electric variant of its GV70 SUV later this week in China. The company will unveil the car at the Guangzhou Auto Show.

Genesis even released a teaser image poster that showcased the front of the vehicle. AS of right now, it seems that the new model will be called the Electrified GV70. Notably, this will be the company’s third fully electric Genesis model that is launching after the Electrified G80 and the GV60. In terms of design, the new GV70 resembles the G80 EV. The Genesis car still feature the signature crest grille, but its made up of solid diamond shapes that hide the integrated charge port.

Under the hood, the Electrified GV70 is expected to sport specs similar to the G80. For those unaware, the sedan model features an 87.2kWh battery pack paired with two electric motors that output a total of 365 horsepower. Furthermore, it supports an all wheel drive system, with the option of disconnecting the front motor. Its range is expected to be around 250 miles (roughly 400 kilometers).

According to CNET, the Electrified GV70 will be the first Hyundai Motor Group EV that will be built in the US, from its factory in Montgomery, Alabama. At the moment, pricing of the vehicle is currently unknown, but it is expected to be just under 50,000 US Dollars.

Hyundai’s Grandeur EV fuses retro and futuristic elements to give a perfect ode to the ’80s

Hyundai Motor Company is celebrating the 35th anniversary of its flagship Grandeur car from 1986 by recreating it with a twist. It now conforms to all of the newfangled standards of technology, even pulling a step ahead in some bits, and is as such fitted with a modern electric drivetrain.

The exterior is where most of the charm lies, with the car looking straight out of the Cyberpunk 2077 videogame owing to its retro design. Most of the outside still is reminiscent of the original Hyundai Grandeur, but there have been subtle changes – updated side mirrors, covered wheels, side cladding, and pixel-style LED headlights and tail lights – enough to make the car sufficiently futuristic.

But perhaps the best bit is Hyundai’s choice of color. The EV comes in black, with equally dark windows, almost as if it’s hiding something villainous. The only thing that helps cool off its sinister vibes is the bit of chrome finishing on the side cladding as well as grille, without which the car would’ve looked far more menacing than it already does.

Nevertheless, a tasteful exterior is nothing if it’s combined with unrefined interiors. A car owner, after all, spends most of their time inside the vehicle than standing outside gawking at it. Hyundai’s design team knows of this and has made sure that the insides are every bit as plushy and luxurious as the car’s exterior may lead one to believe.

Accordingly, the car’s interior follows a ‘Newtro (newness + retro) concept theme’ just like the exterior. You get bronze-colored lighting all-around complemented by burgundy velvet and Napa leather for the seats and the rest of the upholstery. There’s even a large display up-front to satisfy all the infotainment needs. Hyundai also says that the car has been fitted with a ‘modern audiophile sound system’ comprised of 18-speakers, so there’s that.

Unfortunately, the Hyundai Grandeur EV is nothing but a concept to show off the company’s creativity and heritage. Fans looking to purchase one will have to wait for the unlikely event of Hyundai changing its mind about it all and actually kickstarting the car’s mass production. Still, considering the attention the car has managed to grab, it wouldn’t hurt to produce something like the Mercedes G-Class and Ford Bronco, both of which arguably are pinnacles of retro car design.

Hyundai to develop chips to reduce its reliance on chipmakers

The Chief Operating Officer of Hyundai Motor revealed earlier this week that the company is planning on developing its own chips. This move arrives amid the global chip shortage as the company seeks to reduce its reliance on chipmakers.

For those unaware, the world is facing a shortage of semiconductors that has impacted various industries across the globe, including the automobile industry. The shortage even led to certain carmakers halting production entirely due to supply constraints. Now, the South Korean automobile maker, Hyundai, is apparently seeking to develop its own chips to cut off its dependence on chipmakers. The news comes after the company saw the “toughest months” in August and September 2021 (Via Reuters).

The company’s COO Jose Munoz stated that the worst has passed for the industry chip shortage. He further added that “But also in our case, we want to be able to develop our own chips within the group, so we are a little bit less dependent in a potential situation like this. This takes a lot of investment and time, but this is something we’re working on.”

The senior official said that the company is also aiming on delivering vehicles at the level of its original business plan in the fourth quarter of this year. Hyundai Motor has announced that the company has partnered with South Korea’s capital Seoul to build an urban air mobility ecosystem. It adds that the new system for transportation will be commercialized by 2028.

The automaker says that the Urban Air Mobility (UAM) ecosystem will start with a vision for landing stations for the air taxis (which are being called Vertiport) and building a long-term roadmap for the sector.

Talking about the advantages that Hyundai Motors has when it comes to UAM, Song Jae-Yong, Director of the company touted 37 manufacturing facilities across 10 countries as well as its subsidiary for components, infrastructure, and finance. He also talked about the firm’s development of technologies in electric and hydrogen fuels.

In order to boost the UAM efforts, the South Korean automating giant hired Dr. Shin Jai-won in 2019 who previously worked at NASA in the United States. The company is also planning to establish a subsidiary in Washington, DC for its UAM business.

The company was previously in talks with the officials of Los Angeles to commercialize UAM and is set to demonstrate a vertiport prototype in the UK later this year. As for South Korea, Hyundai says that the transportation service will start from Gimpo International Airport to about 30 to 70 kilometers in the city.

Hyundai is aiming to offer a safe, noiseless, cost-effective, and consumer-centric Urban Air Mobility service. It’s noteworthy that other automakers, including Toyota, are also investing in this new sector.

The Urban Air Port Air-One was selected as the winner of the UK government’s Future Flight Challenge earlier this year. The program aims to develop aviation infrastructure and systems that enable the next generation of electric and autonomous air vehicles.

Recently, Archer Aviation unveiled its first electric flying taxi named Maker. The two-seater model will be used for testing as the company works towards the certification of a larger piloted five-seater that was announced in March 2020. Note that this newly unveiled aircraft isn’t the one that will be used for the planned commercial operation in 2024.

Samsung has joined forces with Hyundai Motor Co. to collaborate with the South Korean government and some agencies to tackle headlong the global chip shortage. The agreement recently signed by both companies and the Korean Electronics Technology Institute, the Korea Automotive Technology Institute, and the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy will foster a more robust local supply chain for vital semiconductors needed for many production processes within the country.

While the local automotive industry will be the primary beneficiaries of the new collaboration between Samsung and Hyundai, there are possible global implications if the partnership is successful. Samsung and Hyundai will develop next-generation super-efficient semiconductors, battery management chips, image sensors, and application processors for in-car entertainment/ information systems.

The semiconductor industry is a long-term and capital-intensive industry. Therefore the dividends from the partnership, if sustained, could take several years to become visible. Samsung is already pursuing research in an alternative wafer production template, with a focus on 12-inch wafers. This could also revolutionize chip making across different types.

The moves by both companies are long-term efforts to shore up the development of the automotive industry. They could be a culmination of the corporate social responsibility initiatives of both companies. The goal remains to establish a strong supply base for the local production of semiconductors for the automotive industry in its home market.

In line with its desire to bridge the supply gap in global chip shortage, Samsung Electronics had announced expansion plans for its existing chip manufacturing plants. The company has also made progress in developing innovative solutions like the new PixCell LED intelligent headlight technology, which is being deployed specifically to the automotive industry.

Hyundai and Kia confirm not being production partners for Apple Car

Recently, multiple reports had surfaced regarding the Apple Car and the company’s supposed production partners. We had previously covered news regarding Hyundai and its subsidiary Kia partnering with the iPhone maker for its electric car production, but it has now been confirmed that this is not the case.

Back in January 2021, Hyundai revealed that it was in talks with the Cupertino based giant regarding a potential partnership for Apple Car. But then, the automobile maker then revised the statement to working with various car brands on self driving technology and shared no specifics regarding the matter. After which, multiple reports surfaced that suggested that both Hyundai and Apple are working on a possible deal. Furthermore, it was also revealed that Hyundai’s subsidiary Kia Motors was also in the picture.

The reason for the partnership is over the automotive manufacturer’s US based firms and reports even had a supposed 3.6 billion US Dollar investment in the ‘talks.’ But now, Hyundai and Kia have confirmed that the companies are not in talks with Apple regarding its Apple Car production. Both firms stated that they “have been talking with multiple companies about autonomous electric car development,” but have not made any confirmations so far.

In other words, the Apple Car project’s future is currently unclear, at least in terms of a potential partner for its first all electric self driving car. While the news might put the project in the backseat, it is still indicative of the smartphone maker’s growing interest in its electric vehicle offering. Last month, Hyundai Motor confirmed that the company is in talks with Apple for the production of the tech giant’s ambitious project of making its own autonomous driving vehicle, which is currently being referred to as Apple Car.

It was expected that both the companies will reach a deal by the end of March this year, for the production of Apple Car. But a couple of days ago, it was being reported that the companies may have halted the talks.

Hyundai and Kia have now confirmed that the company has ended talks with Apple related to the production of Apple Car, the tech giant’s upcoming autonomous driving vehicle. In a regulatory filing, Hyundai and Kia said the two firms had received requests from multiple outfits about self-driving electric car development, but no decision had been made as the talks were at the early stages.

During the talks, it was suggested that Hyundai would bring production to the United States, operating a factory in Georgia controlled by Kia with an aim of producing 100,000 cars by 2024. It could have also involved an investment of $3.6 billion from Apple to make the project a reality.

While the talks with Hyundai and Kia have ended without reaching a deal, the status of talks with other companies with Apple is not yet known. Earlier, it was reported that the US-based tech giant was speaking to at least six Japanese automakers at the same time.

A new report has revealed that Apple and Kia are nearing a deal that would have the former make a 3.6 billion US Dollar investment into the latter for the manufacturing of electric vehicles in the future.

According to a DongA report (Via GSMArena), the Cupertino based giant is apparently planning on working with the Hyundai subsidiary, Kia, for its production site in Georgia, US. Reportedly, the iPhone maker is expecting that its large investment production of electric vehicles will begin by the year 2024. Apple targets on reaching 100,000 cars being produced per year, with future expansion growing the number to 400,000 units per year.

The report arrives from sources close to the matter, which have stated that Apple is leaning towards Hyundai as its primary partner to enter into car production. The main reason for this is due to the automobile giant’s electric vehicle platform, E-GMP, along with its production facilities in the US and the supposed ability to begin production by the year 2024. Kia will be responsible for handling the production and manufacturing process.

Meanwhile, Apple will be in control of the self driving or autonomous systems. This would include the software, hardware, user experience, battery technologies, semiconductors, and other aspects. Furthermore, Apple and Hyundai have been in talks for the the electric vehicle production for a while now. While both the companies are expected to reach an agreement in March related to the development of Apple Car, information about the project keeps surfacing online. In the latest news (via Gizmodo), a longtime Apple analyst says that the company has picked Hyundai’s E-GMP platform as the base for its upcoming electric car.

Hyundai claims that the E-GMP platform is designed for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and offers increased modularity and safety. At the same time, it also tries to maximize performance, driving range, and interior room for passengers and luggage.

The company further adds that high-performance cars based on the E-GMP platform could go from 0 to 60mph in less than 3.5 seconds, with top speeds of around 160 mph. It can deliver more than 310 miles on a single charge and the new charging system goes up to 350kw, allowing E-GMP-based vehicles to recharge up to 80% battery in just 18 minutes.

For those who are unaware, Hyundai had announced the E-GMP platform last year and it is the core architecture for the automaker’s next-generation battery electric vehicles (BEVs), including Ioniq 5 and Kia’s first dedicated BEV expected to launch this year.

Both the companies are hoping to produce around 100,000 vehicles in 2024 and the plan is to eventually reach the production goal of 400,000 vehicles annually. It is said that the “beta version” of the Apple Car could go into testing as soon as next year.

Hyundai Motor Group has just launched a new Urban Air Mobility Division that is concerned with the development of commercial flying car technology. The company’s interest in this field isn’t surprising given that the urban air mobility sector is expected to grow into a $1.5 trillion USD market in the next 20 years.

Hyundai’s air mobility division will be headed by Dr. Jaiwon Shin, an experienced aeronautics engineer who used to lead NASA’s Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate. He has overseen projects that include a supersonic X-plane, UAS traffic management, and Urban Air Mobility. Under Dr. Shin’s leadership, Hyundai wants to establish itself ‘as a driving force in urban air mobility’.

The Urban Air Mobility division will be involved in coming up with innovative and smart solutions to ever-increasing traffic problems across the globe. Flying cars could be one of these solutions.

Flying cars has been a concept that has long piqued the interest of companies such as Uber and Volocopter. With Hyundai jumping into this emerging industry, it remains to be seen whether we’ll be able to see a commercial flying taxi or car anytime in the next 10 years.
