As noted by tipster Mukul Sharma, two LG devices with model numbers appear on the BIS database. They are LM-K420YMW, LM-K520YMW and are listed under LG. On screening the model numbers through FCC(1,2), and Bluetooth SIG(1,2), we found that the numbers indeed belong to an LG smartphone. And these have later turned out to be a variant of LG K42 and LG K52 respectively.

Besides, the BIS listing doesn’t give any other info but suggests that the device could debut soon in India. However, thanks to the earlier launch in the Dominican Republic, Europe, Central, and South American countries we know the specifications.

According to Advait Vaidya, Mobile Communications Business Head at LG India, “We are totally committed to MAKE IN INDIA vision & will continue to manufacture in India. In the long term, this situation will also create possibilities of local production by vendors including display & other components.” In other words, the move from the Indian government is aimed to boost the local production of such components.

Editor’s Pick: Vivo X50, Realme 7, OnePlus Nord, and many more get support for Google Play Services for AR

For those unaware, from 1st October 2020, the central government has levied a 10 percent basic customs duty on imports of various components like display assembly, touch panel/cover glass assembly, and more. This arrives despite various requests to the government to delay the levy by a year since these components aren’t currently made in India at the moment, which may lead to prices going up in the smartphone market by at least 3 to 5 percent as per industry estimates.

Vaidya further added that “we are closely monitoring the situation, it may have an impact on prices,” when reached out to by ET. LG is assembling its smartphone through its Pune factory and only holds less than 1 percent of the total Indian market. The components that are facing the import duty hike also make up for 25 percent of the smartphone’s cost, and it may take at least two years to establish a dedicated display fab unit in India if the company does decide to invest 300 to 400 crores on a single unit.

The company is scaling up its local smartphone manufacturing in the region by 15 times after recent anti-Chinese sentiments have gripped the nation.

According to LG’s mobile communications head, Advait Vaidya, the company has seen a 10 times increase in sales of its smartphones in the past two months. The senior executive credited this rise to the growing anti-Chinese sentiments and the boycotting of products from China. Furthermore, LG is also planning on applying for the PLI (production-linked incentive) that the local government offers to scale up production.

Editor’s Pick: A likely Galaxy M41/M51 6,800mAh battery receives 3C and Safety Korea certifications

The key market segment that LG is planning on focusing on is the sub 15,000 INR (roughly 200 US Dollars) smartphone category. This segment has typically been dominated by Chinese giants like Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and even Realme in India. However, with recent military clashes in the Indo-China borders, friction between the two nations has escalated and the Indian government has already banned 59 Chinese applications as well.

Thus, LG is looking at this rising unease surrounding China and its products as an opportunity. By August, the company plans on launching 6 phones across all segments starting from the sub 10,000 INR category (roughly 133 US Dollars) with plans to expand through online and offline channels. Similarly, by the time Diwali (a major festival in India) rolls up, LG aims to have its production rise by 12-15X.

The price of the LG Candy converts to less than a $100 and it comes with okay specs. However, we are disappointed it comes in rather dull colors seeing as it is named candy.

The LG Candy has a 5-inch HD display and is powered by an unnamed 1.3GHz quad-core processor. It has 2GB of RAM and 16GB of expandable storage (32GB max MicroSD card support). There is a 5MP sensor in front for selfies and an 8MP camera on the back. The camera app has a feature called “Flash Jump Shot” that allows you to take several pictures at once and mashes them together into a gif. LG also says it has a low-light photography feature.

Seeing as it has 2GB of RAM, it is no surprise this phone isn’t running Android Oreo (Go Edition), so you’d expect it to run regular Android Oreo, right? No. LG has decided to ship the Candy with Android 7.1.2 Nougat which is disappointing, to put it mildly.

The LG Candy has a 2,500mAh removable battery, Bluetooth 4.2, FM radio, and LTE support. Surprisingly, the phone comes with a USB-C port which isn’t something you find at this price point.

Since it has a removable battery, LG decided to go with replaceable battery covers. So you get four different back covers in the box. The covers are blue, gold, and silver, including the default black that comes attached. However, none of the colors are flashy and attractive which makes you wonder why it’s named Candy.

The LG Candy is priced at INR 6,999 (~$99) and will go on sale tomorrow, September 1 across retail outlets in India. Apart from the dull colors and the dated OS, the LG Candy isn’t a bad device.

This will be the second country getting it following its launch in Korea last month.

The LG Q6 has a 5.5-inch FHD+ FullVision Display with an 18:9 ratio providing you with an immersive video experience. The unique display also translates to a smaller body making it one of the few 5.5-inch devices you can operate with just one hand.

It has the mid-range Snapdragon 435 inside it paired with 3GB of RAM. Built-in storage is 32GB with support for expansion via a dedicated microSD slot.

For optics, the LG Q6 has a 13MP camera on the back and a 5MP front facing camera with a 100° viewing angle for those wide-angle selfies. The phone will also have the new Square Camera mode for creative images.

There are dual SIM slots, Bluetooth 4.2, and a micro USB port for connectivity. Battery is 3000mAh and there is Android 7.1.1 Nougat pre-installed. Sadly, the LG Q6 doesn’t have a fingerprint scanner. Instead you get face unlock and LG’s signature KnockCode.

The LG Q6 will be available in Astro Black, Terra Gold, and Ice Platinum when it goes on sale. However, we will have to wait till August 10 to find out the price.
