Why are Prices of EVs not Dropping with the Falling Prices for Lithium-ion Batteries?

Electric vehicles (EVs) are in a fascinating phase of development. While their heart, the lithium-ion battery, has seen prices drop significantly, EVs as a whole remain costly. Let’s explore why this is happening.

Cheaper raw materials and Expanded production contributed to the reduction in prices

A decade ago, the average cost of a lithium-ion battery was $780 per kilowatt-hour. As of 2023, this has plummeted to a record low of $139/kWh, according to the Bloomberg New Energy Foundation (BNEF). This decrease is largely due to expanded production and cheaper raw materials. Yet, despite these cost reductions, EVs haven’t become significantly more affordable for the average consumer. Why?

First, the reduction in battery costs doesn’t immediately translate to cheaper EVs. Manufacturing an EV is a capital-intensive process, with numerous costs beyond just the battery. Even with cheaper batteries, automakers still face high production costs.

Second, the EV market hasn’t expanded as rapidly as anticipated. This slower growth means that the high investment in EV production hasn’t paid off as expected, leading to higher prices for consumers. For instance, in 2022, battery prices actually increased briefly due to a mismatch between supply and demand.

Furthermore, automakers are cautious in transferring cost reductions to consumers. Brands like General Motors and Ford have faced delays in their EV rollout due to market conditions and the need for technological enhancements. This indicates a larger issue: the EV industry is still finding its footing in a competitive and evolving market.

However, there’s a silver lining. North America is rapidly growing as a battery manufacturing hub, bolstered by governmental support. With increased domestic production and investment in battery technology, the future looks promising.

Xiaomi patents new technology that can detect if a battery is bulging

Battery bulging is more than just a sign of an aging battery pack, but also a matter of safety risk. Now, Xiaomi has patented a new lithium battery technology that seeks to address this issue.

According to a MyDrivers report, the Chinese tech giant applied for a patent last month, which got published earlier this week. This patent was titled “Battery Expansion Prompt Method and Device,” and was invented by Luo Wenhui. As the name suggests, this technology will be able to detect and inform the user regarding their aging battery and its health. In other words, it can detect if the battery is bulging and alert the user, so as to avoid any complications.

The description states that “The present disclosure relates to a method for prompting battery expansion. The device includes: a battery compartment, a battery back cover, piezoelectric ceramics, and a current detection circuit; wherein the piezoelectric ceramic is arranged on the inner side of the battery back cover at a position facing the battery; or the bottom of the battery compartment. The current detection circuit is connected to the piezoelectric ceramic and is used to detect a current signal generated by the piezoelectric ceramic. When the piezoelectric ceramic generates a current signal, it indicates that the degree of battery expansion exceeds an expansion threshold.”

To put it simply, the technology would be based around the battery/surrounding it and will be able to detect any abnormalities in its shape. Scientists Develop Battery Packed with Fire Extinguisher Inside

In the quest to meet buyers’ yearning for smartphones with longer battery life, smartphone makers have developed several technological methods of battery manufacture. Smartphones are now packed with fast charging technology that delivers full capacity charge in just few minutes. But then, the rate of exploding phones seems to have increased as well, most times the phone’s battery is the culprit.

The case of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 is perhaps the most notable smartphone till date to have been plagued by defective battery leading to the recall of the entire line. Although Samsung is yet to release the report of its findings on the exact cause of the Note 7 exploding incidence, local media allege that the report finds the battery as the cause.

However, there seem to be an end in sight as scientists at the Stanford University have published in the Science Advances journal that they have developed a battery that cools itself when it gets overheated. The battery is a lithium-ion battery built with flame-retardant triphenyl phosphate (TPP) inside a shell within the electrolyte fluid. The shell melts when the temperature reaches 150C (302F), releasing the chemical compound. The accompanying test result shows battery fires were extinguished in just 0.4 seconds.

Lithium-ion battery is the most popular battery that powers most gadgets, including smartphones and it gets affected by heat which turns it to a potentially explosive material. Attempts have been made in the past to incorporate TPP inside batteries without the shell and that have hampered their performance, so basically what they brought into the mix is the shell which they develop for the TPP compound inside the battery.

It is hoped that this development would lead to a break-through in lithium-ion battery manufacture which would eventually bring to an end cases of battery fire or explosions.

This is how Oneplus’s 10000mah power bank looks like

Meizu is not the only that is planning to close 2014 with a bang. OnePlus has been making the headlines as 2014 reaches its end as well. There is the leak of a couple of pictures of what is purportedly the Mini version of the famous OnePlus One cell phone. The leaked information says that it has dual 8mp cameras and sports a 5-inch display screen. It was also announced that OnePlus will experience an “evolution” in 2015 (a follow-up to the OnePlus One, perhaps?). Of course, there is also the news that OnePlus released its first power bank.

Yesterday, OnePlus formally launched its first cell phone battery pack, the “OnePlus Power Bank”. This battery pack has a capacity of 10000mAh and uses a Lithium ion chip battery chip from ATL. Its dimensions are 142.8 x 16.2 x 72.6mm and it weighs 220g. It comes with four LED lights that show how much power has been charged. It also has a 5V 2A Micro USB charging port and two 5V 2A standard USB ports. In addition, the OnePlus Power Bank has one interesting feature. You do not have to press the power button to see how much has been charged. You just have to shake it a bit.

Today, someone posted some photos of the OnePlus Power Bank online. It is supposed to have good craftsmanship and texture. Reports say that this battery pack will officially go on sale in January for 89 RMB in China and 14.99 USD abroad. So far, it will only come in BabySkin White and Sandstone Black.

OnePlus launches 10000mAh battery pack for 14.99 USD

OnePlus has been on the news a lot for the last several months. First, there is the leak of a couple of pictures of what is allegedly the OnePlus One Mini. It is said to have dual 8mp cameras and use the Android 4.4.4 operating system. It also has a 5-inch display screen and uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 CPU. Also back in November, they fuelled rumors of a new first generation device by saying that a new “evolution” will take place soon.

That is not all. Yesterday, OnePlus announced that they would release two new products today. Some speculated whether one of them would be the OnePlus 1S cell phone or a wearable device. Now they revealed one of the two devices and itt turns out that it is neither.

Instead, they launched a new external battery pack. This new battery pack from OnePlus uses a Lithium ion battery chip from ATL and is said to be able to charge the iPhone 6 at 4.5 times the rate. Its dimensions are 142.8 x 16.2 x 72.6mm. It also weighs 220g and comes with four LED lights. This battery pack from OnePlus costs 89 RMB in China and 14.99 USD abroad. It will go on sale this January.

Having already launched one of its two new products, one cannot help but wonder what OnePlus’ other product will be released today. Will it actually be the OnePlus 1S cell phone or some kind of new wearable accessory? Maybe they will launch a new pair of earphones like the OnePlus Silver Bullet earphones.

Anyway, the OnePlus battery pack looks pretty good. So, for those who want a new battery pack to carry when they go out with their cell phones, you better mark your calendars.
