China has got a pretty good Nokia lineup, including models like the Nokia 9 Pureview, Nokia 7 Plus, and the Nokia X7. Even feature phones like Nokia 8110 4G and Nokia 3310 4G have been launched in the Chinese market. Now, the company is launching a couple more feature phones in the region, the Nokia 2720 Flip and the Nokia 800 Tough.

HMD Global has officially teased the arrival of the Nokia 2720 Flip and 800 Tough via its official Weibo page. The company will announce the devices on December 16 at 10 AM in the Chinese market. We have already spotted the product pages for both the devices on the official Nokia website in China but it is yet to be updated with details like pricing and availability.

We knew Nokia 2720 Flip was heading to China after it cleared the TENAA certification a few days back. The phone passed the certification under the model number Nokia TA-1170 and came with the same specs and design as the international version. This included a 2.8-inch 320 x 240-pixel internal display, a 1.3-inch 240 x 240-pixel external display, 512MB RAM, 4GB of ROM, a 2MP camera at the back, and a 1500mAh removable battery. The phone will support 4G LTE and Wi-Fi.

TENAA further reveals that the Nokia 2720 Flip will run on KaiOS 2.5.2, however, you won’t likely have pre-installed apps like Whatsapp or Facebook, unlike the international variant. Both, the 2720 Flip and Nokia 800 Tough were announced at IFA 2019 with KaiOS and Google Assistant on board. The 2720 Flip got a really gorgeous RED color variant a couple of weeks back.

The Nokia 2720 Flip was announced at €89 in Europe while the Nokia 800 Tough retailed at €110. So, expect both these models to be priced below 900 yuan when it launches in China next week.

The device, like its predecessor, first launched in China before it made it to other markets. Six months later, it appears HMD Global has discontinued it in China.

Apparently, the device is no longer available at all three official retail partners. The Nokia 6 is officially sold by JD.com, Tmall, and Suning and all three of them don’t have it for sale anymore. Although the phone hasn’t been removed from the Nokia China site, the chances of these stores stocking it back are slim.

The Nokia 6 (2018) doesn’t seem like a good buy anymore. The Nokia 7 which shares the same processor as it now sells for ¥1199 (~$177) for the 4GB RAM + 64GB model. This is the same price as the 4GB RAM + 64GB Nokia 6 (2018) at Tmall before it was no longer available. It has the same 3000mAh battery too but a smaller 5.2-inch FHD display.

There is also the new Nokia X5 which comes with a more modern design, a more powerful Helio P60 SoC, and has a cheaper price tag.

While discontinuing it may seem like a rash decision, it seems like the best thing to do. The Nokia 6 (2018) is still available in other markets and will likely continue to be sold there if Nokia doesn’t launch any of its newer phones in those markets.

To be fair, its going to need more time to pull in those numbers.

According to analyst, Pan Jiutang, even with the figures pushed by its competitors, Nokia has one phone that ships nearly 10 million units per month. You might be wondering which of its new smartphones it is. Is it the Nokia 6 which was released first or the Nokia 8 with its dual cameras and OZO audio?

Sorry to burst your bubble, it is actually a Nokia feature phone. But sadly, he doesn’t mention the specific model.

Even with the popularity of smartphones, there is still a market for feature phones. They come in handy and are pretty useful thanks to their superior battery life and durability.

HMD Global has released a bunch of feature phones since it got the license to sell phones under the Nokia brand. There is the Nokia 105 (2017) and Nokia 130, in addition to the relaunched Nokia 3310.

The trademark filing was spotted on the website of the Trademark office of the State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC) in China.

The record did not mention if the application was done by HMD Global or not but it is very likely that HMD will be looking to tap into the successful era of the Nokia brand, which the Nseries was a huge part of, in order to help revive the brand. The Nokia Nseries was perhaps one of the successful lines during the glory days of the Nokia brand. First released in 2005, the Nokia Nseries went on to produce sleek smartphones like the N70, N90 and N91, N71, N80 and N92, N72, N73, N93, N75, N95, N76, N77 and many other before the series was replaced by the Nokia Lumia line when Microsoft came into the scene. In its hay days, the Nseries running on Symbian OS and at a time MeeGo OS commonly supported multiple high-speed wireless technologies, such as 3G, or Wireless LAN. Digital multimedia services, such as music playback, photo/video capture or viewing, gaming or internet services were also supported. The line was replaced by the Nokia Lumia line as the company’s flagship smartphone portfolio.

If it turns out the Nseries is returning, it sure would have features that reflect the modern trend, like Android OS instead of Symbian, large RAM size, and powerful processor.

Nokia had earlier been rumored as preparing a flagship smartphone that would be launched at MWC 2017 powered by Qualcomm’s latest SoC. A teaser during the closing part of the Nokia 6 launch in China gave the impression that there would likely be a flagship of such sort at MWC. Also, a smartphone exhibited at the Qualcomm booth at the just concluded CES 2017 was alleged to be the Nokia flagship but Qualcomm did deny that rumor, leaving us in the lurch.

Read More: Nokia P1 with Snapdragon 835, Sharp IGZO Display Rumored as Coming at MWC

It seems the company is intent on concentrating on the Nokia 6 which was launched recently and went on its first flash sales few days back. The Nokia 6 was sold out in just a minute, an indication that the reception it is getting is cordial. Before it went up for sale, the reservations did make it up to one million persons and no doubt a lot of that number is still waiting in the side line to get their unit of the device. There is no doubt, though, that Nokia needs a true flagship if it hopes to compete with existing brand in the highly competitive mobile phone market. We hope we’d get to see the Nokia flagship at MWC, 2017.
