The dual-rail periscope hides many components such as 3D-structured optical components, front-facing cameras, receivers, and rear dual cameras. This design also ensures the integrity of the overall screen by avoiding having to create a notch at the top to house the components.

With this design comes concerns about the durability of the Find X, especially the dual-rail periscope. Questions have been asked about the life expectancy of the dual-rail periscope and also if it is easy to clean. OPPO did give answers to such questions during the Find X China launch on Friday.

According to the innovative phone maker, the Find X’s dual-rail periscope was subjected to over 300000 rigorous tests in its R&D lab. The firm then gave an estimation that at a daily usage rate of 150 times, the Find X’s dual-rail periscope structure can guarantee more than 5 years of use. In addition, only 1% of the power of the mobile phone is required, which can support about 200 times of the periscope on a full charge. Of course, it is rare to use the selfie camera up to 150 times daily. Besides, with the rapid recycle rate of mobile phones, most users must have replaced the Find X in 5 years time. The tech giant also hinted that the Find X comes with a fall auto-recovery mechanism. This mechanism is divided into three stages, namely: free-fall detection, signal command, and periscope recovery to ensure the dual X-ray periscope of Find X gets full security protection. In other words, the dual-rail periscope retracts when a free fall is detected.

Now, as promised, the company has launched the Oppo Find X smartphone in China.

In China, the device comes in three different variants. The 128GB storage model has standard VOOC flash charge, while the 256GB storage version comes with SuperVOOC charging. The third is variant is the premium Lamborghini Edition.

The standard variant with 128GB storage is priced at 4,999 Yuan (approx. $756), while the 256GB model is priced at 5,999 Yuan (approx. $907). On the other hand, the Lamborghini Variant has been priced at 9,999 Yuan which roughly converts to $1,511.

The Oppo Find X comes with a 6.5-inch Full-HD+ OLED display with 19.5:9 aspect ratio. The display dominates the front side of the phone and it is touted as the world’s first smartphone to come with a screen-to-body-ratio of 93.8 percent. While the bezels are completely gone from three sides, there’s still a small chin at the base of the screen.

Unlike the Vivo NEX that has a pop-out front-facing camera, the Find X comes with a large automatic sliding mechanism the width of the phone. When this part of the phone slides out, it not only reveals the front camera and 3D face scanning sensors for unlocking the phone, it also reveals the dual rear cameras and LED flash. OPPO has termed it “Stealth 3D cameras”. According to the company, the slide-out mechanism pops out in just 0.5 seconds.

The front-facing camera sensor is of 25MP for taking selfies. It comes with multiple 3D portrait lighting features and Omoji, which is OPPO’s own take on the iPhone X’s emojis. For the photography, the smartphone comes equipped with a dual camera setup that consists of a 16MP + 20MP sensors on the back with OIS and AI features.

Under the hood, the Oppo Find X is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor along with 8GB RAM and 256GB internal storage. The smartphone doesn’t have a fingerprint scanner, instead, it comes with O-Face (3D face unlock) which OPPO says has a failure rate of 1/1,000,000 compared to that of a fingerprint scanner which is 1/50,000.

It runs on ColorOS 5.1 AI Smart custom UI based on Android 8.1 Oreo operating system. The company says that the OS will learn usage habits, preload common applications, and make the app start faster. It also features a smartphone voice assistant. The device is backed by a 3730mAh battery, which supports Oppo’s custom super fast VOOC charging technology.

The video begins with “Hi” and the next slide says “It’s been a long time” and then a third slide appears which teases the Find X name. The colour of the website’s theme is dynamic, finally ending in the Red colour seen on the leaked poster. We must also add that OPPO India has also teased the Find X and even labelled it a futuristic phone.

The OPPO Find X has been an elusive model that has been a long time coming. The last model that was launched in the series was the Find 7 and that was in 2014. Since then there have been several rumours of a Find 9 and later Find X launching. All that ended up not materializing over the years and it was later disclosed that the Find series has been scrapped in favour of the A and R series.

This upcoming OPPO Find series of new products is different from the previous naming styles. It no longer adopts a digital naming scheme and instead uses X as the product name. In mathematics, X stands for infinite possibilities, which is in line with the discovery spirit that the Find series has always insisted on. It also shows that Find X will be an OPPO product that focuses on the future. Rumours have it that it could be equipped with a structured light 3D module like what is found on Apple’s iPhone X and Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition for 3D facial recognition. Some of the other features that are expected to arrive on the Find X smartphone include super-fast 15-minute flash charge, 5x lossless zoom and support for 5G connectivity. We expect more details of the device to emerge in the coming days and from the look of things, its launch may be close by.
