Most Samsung products are manufactured in Vietnam, with the country accounting for over 60% of the company’s global smartphone production. In recent years, the South Korean behemoth has also expanded to other countries, including India, Brazil, and Indonesia. And you can now add Egypt to the list as Samsung is reported to be building a smartphone manufacturing plant in the Land of a Thousand Suns.

Samsung’s Egypt plant will create over 1,400 jobs

Egypt’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology confirmed through Zawya that Samsung is building a new factory to produce smartphones in the country. The factory will cover an area of 6,000 square meters in Beni Suef. Notably, Samsung’s new plant is expected to provide about 1,400 direct and indirect job opportunities, especially in Upper Egypt.

Construction for the project is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter (Q4) of this year. According to Zawya, the forthcoming Samsung mobile phones will be manufactured locally at the new factory to cater to the demand in the Egyptian market.

The decision to build a new Samsung factory in Egypt was made during a meeting between the Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Amr Talaat, and the Chairman of Samsung Egypt, Jun Su Jung, along with his delegation. Samsung’s decision to establish a phone factory in Egypt can be seen as a positive move for the development of the country.

The factory is likely to create jobs, boost the economy, and even help to develop Egypt’s manufacturing sector. In return, Samsung may receive incentives such as tax breaks and subsidies from the Egyptian government.

A recent report emanating from South Korea hints that global tech powerhouse, Samsung, may be unable to the 300 million thresholds for sales of its varied phone products this year, after 9 straight years of consistently massive sales globally. According to the South Korean report, it is estimated that the manufacturer will likely achieve about 270 million phones shipped out this year.

Although the report (via) did not highlight the possible causes for this massive decline in exports, the ravaging coronavirus pandemic tagged COVID-19 may have contributed substantially to its inability to meet its 9-year record.

At the end of the third quarter of 2020, Samsung confirmed that it had exported about 189 million units, which is still an appreciable figure when this year is put in perspective, due to the pandemic and other factors that significantly altered its forecasts.

According to recent updates by the South Korean tech giant, it has set a goal of eclipsing 307 million units in 2021 by expanding its mid-range and low-end 5G smartphone lineup and promoting the ever-widening segment of foldable models.

Of the projected 307 million units slated for 2021, about 287 million units, that is, about 93%, are going to be smartphones, while the remaining 7% (about 20 million units) would likely be from its feature phones stable. It is also expected that, of these 287 million projected exports of Samsung smartphones, 50 million are likely going to be flagship models.

Recently, Samsung has been making some decent inroads into the European market with a high possibility of nicking a few 5G supply contracts with some European mobile telecom operators. This was in addition to its successes in the American market, even in the face of the coronavirus pandemic.

The component cost of Samsung Galaxy S8 analyzed and released by IHS Markit last week surprised us with the highest costs among the high-end smartphones across the globe, way higher than that of iPhone 7 and others.

Yesterday afternoon, a new IHS Markit report with detailed breakdowns released by insider @Kevin Wang’s diary via his official Weibo account also confirmed this. Samsung Galaxy S8 topped number one with $307.5 for Bill of Materials (BOM) and manufacturing costs.

Analyst Pan Jiutang reposted and claimed that, among the over $300 BOM cost, the relatively expensive ones including display / touch screen, processor, memory, camera module, and battery are the ones among Samsung’s product portfolios, of which over $200 can be supplied by Samsung internally.

Pan speculated that Snapdragon 835 system in S8 costs over $60, and 64/128GB UFS flash memory near $24 and $34 respectively (which will be $21 and $40 for the capacity of eMMC); LPDDR4x DRAM, 4/6GB estimated at $20 and $35 respectively.

Chinese phones’ key components, however, are all subject to external supply except Huawei’s Kirin processors that can fulfill its own needs and Xiaomi’s processor just hitting the market.

It is therefore obviously that Chinese phones still have a long way to go if they are to surpass Samsung.
