<p>The wearables market has been experiencing a steady rise for a few years with tech giants like Apple, Xiaomi, Huawei, Samsung, and Google pushing the boundaries of what these devices can do. However, Canalys&#8217; report reveals a significant decline in wearables shipments during Q4 of 2022, which is the largest since data has been analyzed. Here are the details&#8230;</p>

<h2><strong>Basic Bands Sales Decline Affects Total Wearables Market Despite Smartwatches Growth</strong></h2>

<p>Canalys reports that only 50 million wearables units were shipped between October and December 2022, marking an 18% decline from the previous year. This decline affected all five major companies. Though Apple saw annual growth for the full calendar year, it was not immune to the Q4 slump. The report attributes the decline to a challenging macroeconomic environment in Q4, which could be attributed to several factors like supply chain disruptions, inflation, and consumer spending habits.</p>

</figure>

<p>Apple retained its position as the market leader due to its popularity among iPhone users. Google took second place with the Pixel Watch despite a 25% decline in Fitbit devices. Xiaomi, Huawei, and Samsung all experienced YoY declines in shipments during the holiday period. Canalys categorizes wearables into basic bands, basic watches, and smartwatches. However, the differences between these categories are becoming increasingly blurry with every new device release. </p>

<p>Canalys predicts that smartwatches will continue to grow at around 10%, but the decline in interest for basic bands will set the total wearables market at a modest 2% rise. The wearables market has been a hotly contested space in the tech industry, with major players constantly vying for dominance. However, the Q4 slump shows that even the biggest players are not immune to market fluctuations. It will be interesting to see how these companies adapt to the changing market conditions and continue to innovate in the coming years.</p>

We can also expect new products to be released by companies like <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Xiaomi</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Samsung</a>. So, the wearable device market will be a significant new battleground in the second half of the year, in addition to smartphones.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Screenshot-2022-01-11-124300.png?x23692"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-436608" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Screenshot-2022-01-11-124300.png?x23692" alt="Apple" width="682" height="385" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Screenshot-2022-01-11-124300.png 682w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Screenshot-2022-01-11-124300-300x169.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 682px) 100vw, 682px" /></a></p>
<p>According to one of the industry insiders, Taiwan Economic Daily (via <a href="https://www.ithome.com/0/628/930.htm">IThome</a>), the market for wearable devices as a whole is still expanding and that major brands won&#8217;t give up easily. It&#8217;s anticipated that companies like Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei, and even Meta will keep announcing new products. Its primary goal is to increase brand value and sell more ancillary services rather than hardware per se.</p>
<p>In a report by the research firm IDC, 530 million wearable devices will be shipped worldwide in 2021, a 20 percent increase from the previous year. The majority of the items sent are wristbands and watches. Apple has a significant advantage over its rivals when it comes to smartwatches. Apple Watch had a market share of 35% in the fourth quarter of last year, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Xiaomi </a>came in second with 8.6%, and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Samsung</a> came in third with 7.9%. About 6.7 percent of the market is taken by <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/huawei/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Huawei</a>.</p>
<p>According to IDC statistics, 11.23 million AR/VR headsets were shipped globally last year, an increase of 92.1 percent year over year in terms of VR devices. One of them saw the first shipment of VR equipment surpassing 10 million units, coming in at 10.95 million. VR equipment shipments are anticipated to increase by 43.6 percent year over year to 15.73 million units this year. Among them, Meta, a top manufacturer of VR equipment, has an 80 percent market share for Oculus, which is significantly higher than that of other rivals.</p>

<p>Industry experts were quoted in the report as saying that since there weren&#8217;t many new wearable devices released in the first half of this year, new products released in the second half of the year are expected to attract buyers. However, if the global inflation problem continues to negatively impact the overall economy, sales of wearable devices may be discounted, and the follow-up market still needs to be closely observed.</p>

<p>According to a new report, the Chinese tech giant is planning to launch more products with its latest <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/kirin-a1/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Kirin A1</a> chipset in the near future. This includes headphones, a neckband, smart eyewear, and a smart speaker as well. In an interview, Zach Yang,  Wearables and Audio Product Marketing Director of Huawei, revealed that the company will be launching Kirin A1 powered products in 2020 and 2021.</p>

<p>The HiSilicon chipset was custom made specifically for wearables products and was unveiled back at IFA 2019. Since then, Huawei has launched products like the FreeBuds 3 and Watch GT 2 which sport the new chipset. Unfortunately, the senior executive did not reveal any specific dates or a launch roadmap/timeline as to when exactly we can expect the headphones or smart eye wear to launch.</p>

The company is known for its <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/amazfit/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Amazfit</a> lineup of smart wearables and has worked with Xiaomi multiple times in the past.</p>
<p>Huami is an independent brand that has its survival tied with its main business model which is smart wearable products. With Xiaomi developing its own products in the same category, there is bound to be competition. However, the senior executive claims that Huami does not see the Chinese smartphone maker as a competitor.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_276843" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-276843" style="width: 660px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-276843 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/mi-band-4-watchfaces-4.png?x23692" alt="Xiaomi Mi Band 4" width="660" height="487" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/mi-band-4-watchfaces-4.png 660w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/mi-band-4-watchfaces-4-300x221.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/mi-band-4-watchfaces-4-80x60.png 80w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/mi-band-4-watchfaces-4-569x420.png 569w" sizes="(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-276843" class="wp-caption-text">Xiaomi Mi Band 4</figcaption></figure></p>
<p>Currently, Xiaomi&#8217;s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/mi-band/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Mi Band</a> has become one of the most successful smart wearables in the market <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/08/20/huami-working-on-mi-band-5/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">which was developed in a partnership with Huami</a>. In the past, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/12/03/huami-no-exclusive-deal-signed-with-xiaomi-for-smart-wearables/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">company had stated that it does not work for Xiaomi</a> but often collaborates with the Chinese smartphone maker owing to healthy business relations between the two companies.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/12/16/samsung-leads-in-the-5g-smartphone-market-in-q3-of-2019/">Samsung leads the 5G smartphone market in Q3 of 2019</a></strong></h6>
<p>According to Huang Wang, the direction both companies take for their smart wearables is very different. From his and Huami&#8217;s perspective, the wearables industry has a huge potential for growth. Other companies like Huawei, Oppo, and Vivo are already diversifying to this market as well. Wang considers it natural for such brands to also enter the market and states that it sees Huawei as a competitor and not Xiaomi.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_282205" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-282205" style="width: 735px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-282205 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Huami-Amazfit-GTS.png?x23692" alt="Huami Amazfit GTS" width="735" height="425" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Huami-Amazfit-GTS.png 735w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Huami-Amazfit-GTS-300x173.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Huami-Amazfit-GTS-696x402.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Huami-Amazfit-GTS-726x420.png 726w" sizes="(max-width: 735px) 100vw, 735px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-282205" class="wp-caption-text">Huami Amazfit GTS</figcaption></figure></p>
<p>Huami CEO stated that the industry is driven by technological advancements with each company striving to break through to provide better features at lower power consumption due to better algorithms. He also mentioned that Xiaomi and Huami don&#8217;t focus on similar features and at this stage, its direct competition would be Huawei; since the company can&#8217;t rule out that the OEM may quickly catch up to it.</p>

Touted as the Mi Band 3 successor, the new smartwatch from Xiaomi boasts an array of enhanced features and improved hardware.<img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-258595" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Xiaomi-Mi-Band-4.jpg?x23692" alt="" width="900" height="666" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Xiaomi-Mi-Band-4.jpg 900w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Xiaomi-Mi-Band-4-300x222.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Xiaomi-Mi-Band-4-768x568.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Xiaomi-Mi-Band-4-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Xiaomi-Mi-Band-4-485x360.jpg 485w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Xiaomi-Mi-Band-4-696x515.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Xiaomi-Mi-Band-4-568x420.jpg 568w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></p>

The sub-brand has continued to grow bigger and bigger by the day and recent revelations by Xiaomi&#8217;s CEO indicate the company has this outgoing year amassed a large amount of revenue from sales of products under the Mijia sub-brand.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/xiaomi-mijia-4/"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-112408" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/xiaomi-mijia-1.jpg?x23692" alt="xiaomi lei jun" width="610" height="525" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/xiaomi-mijia-1.jpg 610w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/xiaomi-mijia-1-300x258.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px" /></a></p>
<p>The China Mobile Global Partner conference was held recently and during the conference Lei Jun was reported to have disclosed the sales and revenue data from the sub-brand. According to records made available, Xiaomi has so far invested in 77 ecological chain company of which 30 released products during this period. This is aside Xiaomi&#8217;s core products like smartphones, MIUI software and others which form the core of the company.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/xiaomi-mijia3/"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-112409" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/xiaomi-mijia3.jpg?x23692" alt="xiaomi" width="550" height="274" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/xiaomi-mijia3.jpg 550w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/xiaomi-mijia3-300x149.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px" /></a></p>
<p>It was revealed that expected revenue from the Xiaomi smart products are expected to run into billions of dollars. A breakdown statistical data shows the Xiaomi Power bank is expected with a total sales figure of 55 million units, the Xiaomi Mi band &#8211; 23 million, the Mi Air Purifier &#8211; 1 million pieces, Mi headset &#8211; 18 million, the Xiaomi keyboard &#8211; 5.5 million and the Small Ant camera &#8211; 3.3 million pieces.</p>
