BOE, one of the world’s leading makers of display panels, has been focusing on OLED and especially flexible OLED panels for some time now. Just hours after Honor launched its latest Magic 3 series of flagship smartphones, BOE has announced that it is the exclusive supplier of screen panels for these newly launched devices from Honor.

The company has revealed that the Honor Magic 3 series smartphones come equipped with a 10-bit 6.76-inch flexible full-screen OLED display. It uses an 89-degree super curved screen, offering 2772 x 1344 pixels Full HD+ screen resolution.

The screen-to-body ratio on the smartphone comes down to 94.86 percent and the display panel offers 1.07 billion colors, 100% DCI-P3 color gamut, a high refresh rate of 120Hz and 1920Hz high-frequency PWM dimming.

BOE has been expanding its business and footprints, paving the way for the company to become the leading display panel manufacturer for the year 20202. It shipped around 408 million units last year, accounting for about 21.6 percent of the market share, which represents a year-on-year growth of 5.2 percent.

It was also an exclusive supplier of the display panels for the Huawei Mate X2 foldable smartphone launched earlier this year in February. The company has also showcased a prototype of a 360-degree foldable display.

The company is also a supplier of panels for Apple and could soon be supplying flexible OLED panels to Samsung for the first time. BOE is also set to commercially launch a MicroOLED display in the second half of this year which will be used to support Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality viewing.

Smartphone manufacturers are now moving ahead with the increased usage of OLED screen panels despite the COVID-19 pandemic and sanctions from the United States, as per the report from market research firm UBI Research.

The report adds that about 57 smartphones have been launched in China in the first quarter of this year that uses OLED screen panel. This is double the models launched in the same duration last year.

The UBI Research report adds that companies like OPPO, Vivo, and Xiaomi are launching new smartphones with OLED panels to fill the gap left by the Chinese giant Huawei because of the sanctions from the United States.

With the uptick in the number of such devices, there’s an increase in the sales for the Chinese panel makers. It adds that the smartphone OLED sales have reached $990 million in the first quarter of this year, representing an increase of 38.3 percent YoY.

The growth is attributed to Chinese panel makers manufacturing high-resolution OLED panels, resulting in increased unit prices. However, the report notes that the Chinese panel makers’ use of organic material didn’t increase much. Last year, around 13.8 metric tonnes of organic light-emitting material were used.

Now, more and more China-based smartphone manufacturers are launching smartphones in the mid-to-high-end segment. To meet the demand, the Chinese panel makers are also developing their own foldable OLED panels.

Honor, a former sub-brand of Huawei which recently became independent, has confirmed hosting a launch event on 18th January in China. At the event, the company will unveil its first major smartphone after separating from Huawei — the Honor V40.

Now, days ahead of the official launch, the company has shared a new teaser of the upcoming Honor V40 on social media. The teaser shows that the smartphone is equipped with a billion color retina-level super-sensing screen and a 50MP super-sensing lens matrix for the camera configuration.

The smartphone features a screen with curved edges and has a punch-hole cutout in the top-left corner for housing two camera sensors. It is expected to have a 6.72-inch OLED panel and may support a 120Hz refresh rate along with an in-display fingerprint scanner.

It will be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ chipset with support for 5G connectivity. The processor will be coupled with 8GB of LPDDR4x RAM and the phone will have two storage options — 128GB and 256GB UFS 2.1.

In the camera department, the device is expected to pack a quad-camera setup that could include a 64MP primary sensor, an 8MP secondary lens, and two 2MP sensors. A report claims that the company could swap 64MP snapper for Sony IMX766 50MP sensor. On the front side, there will be a 32MP + 16MP setup for taking selfies and video calling.

The device will be running the Android 10 operating system out-of-the-box with the company’s own Magic UI 4.0 custom interface on top. It is expected to pack a 4,000mAh battery with support for 45W fast charging as well as wireless charging technology.

Ahead of the launch, the company has already started taking reservations for the Honor V40 through offline and online platforms such as JD.com, Tmall, Suning, and the all-new Honor Mall in China.

China-based display maker BOE has been trying to become a supplier of OLED panels to Apple for the iPhone 12 models for many months now but wasn’t able to secure orders from the Cupertino-based giant.

However, it seems that the company has finally managed to supply OLED screens for the iPhone 12 series to Apple. As per the reports, the Chinese company supplied the first batch of screens to Apple last week.

The development comes just days after it was revealed that BOE had finally passed Apple’s certification for supplying screens. It is not yet confirmed how many panels will be supplied by BOE to Apple for the iPhone 12 lineup but in the first batch, it reportedly sent 10,000 units of the 6.1-inch screen.

A recent report had stated that Samsung still remains the top choice for Apple when it comes to iPhone 12 screen. As a result, the South Korean company is expected to ship around 140 million OLED panels for iPhone in 2021, followed by LG Display which is expected to ship 30 million panels. Lastly, BOE is expected to ship 10 million OLED panels.

Earlier, it was reported that the BOE, which is already a display supplier for MacBook and iPad, will be supplying OLED screens for the new iPhones as Apple tries to reduce its dependence on Samsung. But the Chinese firm wasn’t able to meet Apple’s standard but after working on it for a few more months, it seems that the issues have been resolved and BOE is now a supplier for Apple iPhone 12 display panels.

Running Android 11 operating system based on MIUI 12, the phone will be powered by a 4,780mAh battery and support 50W fast charging technology.

A couple of days ago, Apple finally launched its much-awaited iPhone 12 series smartphones with 5G connectivity support. Also, for the first time ever, all the iPhone models now feature an OLED display.

This time, the company has launched four models — iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max. The phones come in three different display sizes — 5.4-inch, 6.1-inch, and 6.7-inch.

Thanks to this push for the OLED panels on all models of Apple iPhone 12, the shipments from Samsung Display and LG Display — supplier of these panels — have increased.

As per the report, LG Display has supplied panels for the 6.1-inch display models, i.e. iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro while the panel for the other two models — 5.4-inch iPhone Mini and 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max have been supplied by Samsung Display.

The Cupertino-based giant is expected to produce around 70 million units of Apple iPhone 12 models by the end of this year. Keeping an additional 10 percent as a reserve, Samsung and LG are expected to provide around 80 million units of OLED panels.

In that, the portion of panels from Samsung Display is more than that of LG Display. While LG is expected to provide 20 million units, Samsung could be providing around 60 million units of OLED panels to Apple.

The numbers represent a significant increase in order for LG Display which provided only 5 million units of the display panels to Apple last year. Samsung, on the other hand, had provided around 50 million units.

China-based BOE also tried to become a supplier for the OLED panels to Apple but it wasn’t approved in the first attempt. However, there are reports indicating that BOE could provide panels to Apple later this year or next year.

For those who are unaware, Apple first adopted an OLED display in 2017 with iPhone X. The iPhone 11 had two models using OLED panel — Pro and Pro Max. But this time, all four models in the lineup have adopted the OLED screen instead of LCD.

Smartphone manufacturers are increasingly adopting OLED displays instead of LCD panels for their devices. It is growing at such a rapid pace that it does not only surpass other technologies but will also have a lasting lead.

Now, a new report coming from UBI Research reveals that China has emerged as the largest buyer of OLED display panels for smartphones in the second quarter of this year, with 52.5 percent of the total volume.

In comparison, South Korea’s volume for the second quarter of this year stands at 35 percent. The United States, on the other hand, managed to get 8.3 percent of the volume. Companies in China purchased around 30.4 million units of OLED panels in total.

This is quite an unexpected development given that it’s usually Samsung Electronics which procures the most OLED panels. It has always been leading the list and this is the first time that Chinese companies bought more panels in a quarter.

Looking at the Chinese companies, Huawei was the leading brand to source OLED panels for smartphones, accounting for 53.4 percent. It was followed by OPPO, Vivo, and Xiaomi which accounted for 18.6 percent, 14.8 percent, and 8.3 percent.

However, it doesn’t seem to be a one-time thing for Chinese companies. The report adds that going forward, the China-based OLED panel makers will continue to increase their production volume. But it will be interesting to see how this works out given that Huawei has now significantly lowered its smartphone production for next year to just 50 million.

When compared to LCD panels, OLED is preferred due to its thin and light form factor as well as better color performance. Another major factor is that OLED enables flexible display form factor, allowing manufacturers to go ahead with innovative designs.

Along with leading smartphone brands like Samsung, Huawei, and Apple, other companies like OPPO, Vivo, Xiaomi, and more are increasingly adopting OLED panels for their smartphones. Thus the display manufacturing industry is gearing up to expand AMOLED capacity for both rigid and flexible OLED.

According to the report, the overall revenue generated has increased by 3 percent year on year. Notably, during this period, the display market had generated a total of 9 billion US Dollars in revenue. The report also revealed that OLED led the market with high demand while LCD panels faced oversupply due to falling demand.

According to a new report, smartphones with an AMOLED display (Active-matrix organic light-emitting diode) are expected to surpass 600 million units in sales in 2020. This is indicative of the displays explosive popularity in the past couple of years which is still on a steep rise.

Based on a Counterpoint research note, the global sale of smartphones with AMOLED screens will exceed the 600 million shipment mark by the end of 2020. It is a sizable YoY (Year-on-Year) growth of 46 percent from 2019. This rise is expected to arrive with the inclusion of AMOLED display panels in mid range segment of smartphones. Certain Chinese brands like Huawei, Vivo, Oppo, Realme, and Xiaomi are a few of the OEMs that will be making this move.

Out of the 10 major countries whose data was available, 7 countries had 4.7-inches as the most popular size. The next popular display size seems to be 5-inches.

But if you are doubtful of Apple’s dominance even now, then the next line will cast away those doubts for sure. The report further adds that the most common display resolution is unsurprisingly the 1334 x 750 pixel resolution, which only the iPhones can boast of. The next popular resolution is FHD, i.e. 1920 x 1080 pixels. Quad HD resolutions are also catching up particularly in US and Australia.

The Japanese display manufacturers, Japan Display recently showed off a smartphone with a 5.4 inches screen size with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 HD quad pixel. With the resolution, this smartphone also has a pixel density is much higher than the current smartphones on the market.

In comparison, the smartphone screen also has a higher pixel density than iPhone which has a Retina Display technology. If the 4-inch iPhone screen with a resolution of 1136 x 640 pixels have a pixel density of 326 ppi, then this smartphone has a 543 ppi density.

While Vivo Chinese phone maker is already working on a smartphone with a 2560 x 1440 pixel screen, the Vivo Xplay3S has a 6 inch display – since Japan Display’s screen is smaller, the pixels are packed even tighter.

Japan Display said that the quad HD screen on the smartphone has a slim size, the 1:12 millimeters. In addition, the screen also has a look a 160-degree angle and energy efficient. The company also said that they have a 6.2 inch screen with the same resolution. This screen was followed before they introduce the product, 12-inch screen with a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels 4K.
