Snapdragon 888 Pro may remain exclusive to Honor

On June 16, Honor announced the Honor 50, Honor 50 Pro, and Honor 50 SE smartphones in China. The rumored Honor 50 Pro+ with Snapdragon 888 was not announced at the event, which suggests that such a device may not exist. Honor has confirmed that it will be launching the Snapdragon 888 powered Magic 3 series in Q3. Fresh information reveals that the company could be also launching a phone powered by the upcoming Snapdragon 888 mobile platform.

It can be said based on a tweet by reliable tipster Teme that Honor may have struck deal with Qualcomm for the SM8350 Pro chip, which is expected to debut as the Snapdragon 888 Pro. The tipster has claimed that the chip would remain rare as one has bought it except Honor.

The tipster claimed through another tweet that the Magic 3 has a unique design, SD888 Pro chip, and it may offer the best photography experience. Unfortunately, there is no information on the specs of the device.

At the unveiling event of the Honor 50 series, Honor CEO Zhao Ming confirmed that the brand will continue to launch the Magic, numbered, X, and Play series of smartphones. The Magic line will include flagship models, whereas the numbered series will have mid-range phones. The X and Play series will have budget-friendly phones.

Ming also revealed that the Magic 3 lineup featuring the Snapdragon 888 will debut in Q3 this year. Recently, a tipster claimed that the Magic 3 will be equipped with the SM8350 Pro chip.

It is still unconfirmed whether the chip will debut as Snapdragon 888+ or 888 Pro. It is speculated to arrive as an overclocked edition of the SD888 chip featuring the new 3.0GHz X1 super core processor. The rumor mill is yet to spill information about the Magic 3 series.

Honor Magic 3 to launch in August with Snapdragon 888 Pro SoC: Leak

A new leak has revealed that the Honor Magic 3 smartphone will arrive with Snapdragon 888 Pro SoC. The device will apparently launch in August 2021 and will feature the new top end processor from Qualcomm.

The news arrives from a Weibo post, a Chinese microblogging website, from known tipster @数码闲聊站. As per the social media post, the upcoming Magic 3 smartphone will sport the Snapdragon 888 Pro SoC, which is expected to feature the new X1 super core that offers a frequency of 3.0GHz. In other words, it is an overclocked variant of the base Snapdragon 888 processor. Notably, we had previously reported on Honor working on a new smartphones with this chipset, so this handset might be the model in question.

Furthermore, the company’s CEO had also announced recently that its Magic series of smartphones will include high end flagship grade devices. These handsets will also offer iconic physical design, advanced imaging capabilities, and quality assurance as well, among other things. The tipster also added that the company’s first foldable smartphone will also be launching soon, marking the brand’s entry into the foldable smartphone segment.

Snapdragon 888+ Geekbench listing appears, likely to power some flagships in H2 2021

Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 888 mobile platform in December 2021. The Xiaomi Mi 11 5G debuted in the same month as the world’s first phone with an SD888 chip onboard. Fresh information reveals that the company could be working on an enhanced version of the chip that may debut with the Snapdragon 888+ moniker. The new chip has appeared on the Geekbench benchmarking platform (via. Abhishek Yadav) with some of its key specs.

The Snapdragon 888 mobile platform’s codename is Lahaina. The new chipset that has appeared on the benchmarking platform has the same codename, which indicates that it is a new variant of the SD888. It includes four low-power cores working at 1.80GHz, three Cortex-A78 clusters working at 2.42GHz, and lastly, there is a performance core that offers clocking speeds of 3.0GHz.

In comparison, the SD 888 offers a 2.84GHz performance core. Hence, it appears that the new chip may debut in the market as Snapdragon 888+ or Snapdragon 888 Pro and it will be arriving as an enhanced version of the existing SD888 chip.

The testing device which has appeared on the benchmarking site with the SD888+ chip has 6 GB of RAM and Android 11 OS. In the single-core and multi-core tests of Geekbench, the handset scored 1171 and 3704 points, respectively.

In related news, a recent Weibo post by the popular Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station suggests Qualcomm may three variants of the SD888 such as Snapdragon 888 4G, Snapdragon 888 Wi-Fi, and Snapdragon 888 Pro. Probably, some of the flagship phones arriving in the second half of this year could be equipped with the SD888 Pro chip.

Honor reportedly working on a new smartphone powered by Snapdragon 888 Pro SoC

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 is the top-end chipset for smartphones available right now and is powering most of the flagship smartphones launched this year. Recently, it was reported that some Chinese companies are working on devices powered by the unannounced Snapdragon 888 Pro chipset.

Now, a new report from Digital Chat Station reveals that the newly independent smartphone maker Honor is among those companies that are working on a smartphone that will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 Pro SoC.

Do note that the Honor brand has not yet released any premium smartphone powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. However, several reports over time have claimed that Honor phones in the mid-range to the premium category will soon be powered by the Qualcomm chipsets.

The usage of Qualcomm and MediaTek chipsets is mainly due to the fact that Huawei has several restrictions imposed on the company, making it almost impossible for the company to manufacture new chipsets.

Recently, during the launch of the Honor V40 series smartphones, the company’s CEO Zhao Ming had revealed that the company is setting up a new supply chain and is partnering with other companies, including AMD, Qualcomm, Samsung, MediaTek, Intel, and more.

Zhao Ming had also claimed that the company is planning to launch a flagship lineup for smartphones that will surpass Huawei’s P-series and Mate-series. Apart from the regular flagship smartphones, the company is also slated to launch a foldable smartphone.

The Snapdragon 888 is less than six months old but unsurprisingly, Qualcomm already has a more powerful version on the way. Details of this new chipset, which should power a number of flagships scheduled for the second half of the year, has surfaced.

According to the Chinese leaker, Digital Chat Station, the Snapdragon 888 Pro (tentative name) is already being tested by Chinese smartphone manufacturers. He adds in the Weibo post that the first set of phones powered by the chipset should launch in the third quarter of this year.

Compared to the Snapdragon 865 Plus, more local (read Chinese) manufacturers are expected to announce phones powered by the Snapdragon 888 Pro chipset.

With respect to the specifications, it has been reported that the prime core, the Cortex-X1, will have a higher clock speed than that of the Snapdragon 888. The other cores should retain their clock speed. The GPU might not get a boost as it is already clocked pretty high. No surprises here as this is Qualcomm’s tradition when it comes to its flagship chipsets.

There are concerns about the heating issues of the Snapdragon 888 and if the Snapdragon 888 Pro with its higher clock speed won’t worsen the situation.
