Apple has removed WhatsApp and Threads, two messaging apps owned by Meta (formerly Facebook), from its App Store in China. This follows a government order citing national security concerns, according to Reuters.

Both WhatsApp, a popular end-to-end encrypted messaging app, and Threads, a newer social networking app, are no longer available for download on iPhones in China. While Apple confirmed the removal in a statement, details remain scarce. “The Cyberspace Administration of China ordered the removal of these apps from the China storefront based on their national security concerns,” Apple said. Meta declined to comment beyond referring inquiries to Apple.

According to app tracking firms Qimai and AppMagic, this move extends beyond WhatsApp and Threads. Reports suggest that Signal and Telegram, two other messaging apps known for their focus on privacy, have also been removed from the Chinese App Store. While Apple hasn’t confirmed these additional removals, the AppleCensorship website, which tracks App Store changes in China, lists both Signal and Telegram as “disappeared.”

While Telegram hasn’t responded to inquiries about its iOS app status in China, Signal clarifies the situation. “Signal was already blocked in China by the country’s Great Firewall,” explains Signal president Meredith Whittaker. “While Signal may have been available to download in the past, Signal registrations and messages are apparently blocked.” This suggests that the App Store removal may have minimal impact, as users in China would still face hurdles to use the app even if downloaded. The extent of China’s recent crackdown on messaging apps remains unclear. However, it highlights the ongoing tension between national security concerns and user privacy, particularly for encrypted communication platforms.

Meta launched its Twitter rival Threads by Instagram earlier in July this year. It was an instant hit garnering 100 million users in less than a week after its launch. However, the success was short-lived as users opted to leave the new social media platform but couldn’t due to a major drawback. The only way one could access the platform was to link their account to the popular photo-sharing platform Instagram which was a caveat. Now, Adam Missouri, head of Instagram has announced two new welcome changes to the Threads platform. 

Threads account can now be deleted independently

Till today, Threads users were unable to delete their accounts without also deleting their Instagram accounts. With the newly announced changes, the team has resolved this widely requested change. Instagram is now making it possible to delete their Threads accounts without deleting their account on the former platform. In simple terms, the two accounts now work independently. 

With the new update now rolling out users get more control over their Instagram and Threads accounts. In case the feature is not yet available for you, it might arrive in the coming days. The new feature can be accessed from the Settings menu in the Delete or Deactivate Profile section. Users can then choose their preferred option. In both cases, the user’s Instagram account will not be affected. 

Apart from the ability to delete Threads account separately, there is one more change. The content shared by Threads users is also visible to users on Facebook and Instagram resulting in a breach of privacy. With the new update, there is a new option under Settings > Privacy that allows users to ‘opt out of being featured outside Threads’.   

Both new changes are rolling out to everybody. Users are recommended to update their Threads app to the latest verison.

On the one hand, it helps combat the circulation of false information—a noble endeavor considering how Instagram’s search feature became a conduit for conspiracy theories. On the other, it prevents users from accessing even legitimate, fact-based posts on these topics. So, while the company aims to shield users from misinformation, it’s also blocking them from potentially valuable insights and resources.

The company’s cautionary steps might be justified given the brief development cycle of Threads. Recently, we reported that Threads will get a search functionality and a website soon, as hinted by CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s recent tweet. According to a recent report by The Wall Street Journal, the company will be launching the Web version of the application early next week.

For those unaware, Threads by Meta was an attempt to replace Twitter (now known as X). If you visit the official website of Threads, you will notice an interactive spinning galaxy and a QR code in the middle, which will take you to the Threads mobile app in your app store. However, this will not be the case in the coming days, as the CEO has hinted that Threads will soon receive a Web version of the mobile application. This might be an attempt by Meta to get the users’ attention, as it was covered in our previous report that the app had lost its daily users by nearly 39.4 million, or 82%, compared to its peak on July 7.

Now that Threads is getting ready to launch a web version, maybe it should also add a feature to allow users to permanently delete their accounts without losing their Instagram data. For those unaware, Threads does not allow users to delete their Threads accounts without affecting their Instagram accounts. As the account is linked to your Instagram account, permanently deleting your account will also delete your Instagram account.

However, according to a recent report by Techowize you can temporarily deactivate your account without losing your data permanently.

In the race to compete with Twitter and other alternatives that might be dropping in the near future, Threads was the source of undivided attention when it launched, especially in the US, where users spent an average of 21 minutes engaging with the app on July 7. However, that engagement dwindled to just over 6 minutes by July 14. Interestingly, during its peak interest days, Twitter’s daily active users on Android remained relatively unchanged, but the time spent on the platform decreased by 4.3%, possibly due to some users exploring Threads.

One of Threads’ strengths lies in its ability to solve the “empty party problem” faced by new online communities. Instagram users can instantly create a Threads account and bring their existing contacts, contributing to Meta’s claim of achieving over 100 million total account signups in a short period. Despite this success, Threads still lacks essential features and must offer compelling reasons for users to switch from Twitter or adopt it as their primary social media platform.

The roadmap reportedly includes post-editing, multi-language support, and improved desktop functionality. Thus, even though Threads is currently less feature-rich compared to Twitter, it is poised to close the gap soon. Also, Zuckerberg recently said that the app will remain ad-free until it hits 1 billion users.

Traditionally, Twitter has been the go-to platform for breaking news, important updates, and brand engagement. Hence, in my opinion, both networks can coexist, each catering to unique audience segments and purposes.

So it is clear that DMs would’ve likely been one of the most requested features. Since it is also under Meta’s umbrella, Threads may also support cross-platform messaging like Instagram, which allows you to message your friends on Messenger. Yesterday Mark Zuckerberg-led Meta officially released a new social media platform called Threads. It is the talk of the town right now and recorded a whopping 48 million sign-ups in a single day. Now, Twitter has notified Meta of the potential lawsuit action over Threads. 

Twitter threatens Meta with a legal action

Threads is somewhat similar to Twitter. It is positioned toward users looking for a Twitter alternative. Threads is essentially a text-based conversation app that is linked to Instagram. 

With Meta’s Threads and Twitter being pretty much the same, the latter has issued a legal letter addressed to Mark Zuckerberg about their intent to take legal action. The move comes after Threads is said to have garnered 48 million users within the first day. Meta CEO Zuckerberg has been accused of “unlawful misappropriation of Twitter’s trade secrets and intellectual property”. Meta’s Communication Director refuted Twitter’s claims and stated that no person on Thread’s engineering team has worked with Twitter before.

Instagram has been working on a Twitter competitor named Threads, which was leaked a few weeks back. Now, it appears the company is all set to launch it in the coming days or weeks officially.

The official Instagram Threads application from Meta is now available for pre-order on Apple’s App Store, indicating that the launch is imminent.

While the company has not yet revealed the launch date, the listing on the App Store reveals that the application could get launched on 6th July, in just a couple of days. It is being said that Instagram Threads will integrate with the decentralized social media protocol used by Mastodon, called ActivityPub.

The official description of the application on the App Store listing reads: “Threads is where communities come together to discuss everything from the topics you care about today to what’ll be trending tomorrow. Whatever it is you’re interested in, you can follow and connect directly with your favorite creators and others who love the same things — or build a loyal following of your own to share your ideas, opinions and creativity with the world.”

It remains to be seen if the company will adopt a slower rollout for users, which is more likely to happen. So, while the app may be available for download from the 6th of July, not everyone will be able to post on the platform from that date.

Twitter has been facing a lot of issues with the platform, especially after its acquisition by Elon Musk. While there were issues with the content moderation policies, the platform has had a lot of technical problems over the past few weeks. Given Twitter’s condition these days, it looks like a perfect time to launch a competing product.
