Technology keeps bringing new phones and computers with better features. But do we really need all these upgrades? If your current device works fine for your daily tasks, you don’t need a new one. You can also improve old devices with small add-ons. If you share this perspective and you want a better Wi-Fi speed on your computer, Netgear offers the AXE3000 USB Wi-Fi adapter. It’s easy to use and makes Wi-Fi faster on laptops without the newest Wi-Fi technology. Here are the details…

Netgear USB Adapter Boosts Wi-Fi Speeds with WiFi 6E

Netgear has launched the AXE3000 USB Wi-Fi adapter, a first-of-its-kind USB 3.0 adapter with WiFi 6E technology. This easy-to-use upgrade provides a significant increase in Wi-Fi speeds for PC and laptops lacking the latest Wi-Fi features. The main advantage of the AXE3000 is its ability to access the new 6GHz band, designed specifically for WiFi 6E enabled devices.

The Netgear AXE3000 boasts impressive speeds of up to 1.2Gbps, but these maximum speeds require the latest wireless routers and Windows 11 to connect to the 6GHz frequency band. Even with less advanced hardware, the AXE3000 is expected to provide faster Wi-Fi speeds than most laptops currently offer. The adapter works on 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz bands for maximum compatibility and automatically selects the best band for optimal performance.

Netgear claims connection speeds of up to 600Mbps on the 2.4GHz band, 1.2Gbps on 5GHz, and 1.2Gbps on 6GHz. In addition to improved speed, the adapter also supports the latest WPA3 security and is backward compatible with older Wi-Fi standards. This ensures users can connect to networks with outdated routers, such as those found in coffee shops.

The Nighthawk AXE3000 WiFi 6E USB 3.0 Adapter (A8000) is now available for a recommended price of $112.

It also comes with a Network Processing Unit (NPU) that supports 20Gbps speed through 5G cellular to ethernet or Wi-Fi connections that too without the need for CPU involvement.

JC Hsu, Corporate Vice President and General Manager of MediaTek’s Wireless Communications Business, said, “As the leader in 5G CPE solutions, MediaTek is working with Tier-1 operators around the world to bring fast, reliable connectivity to consumers and businesses. This highly integrated platform represents the latest advancements in both 5G and Wi-Fi connectivity and enables our customers to build extremely high-performance multi-gigabit 5G CPE products in the smallest form factors possible.”

The MediaTek T830 5G chip can be paired with the company’s Filogic Wi-Fi connectivity solutions. For 5G FWA routers, the T830 can be combined with the Filogic 680 (Tri-band 4×4 Wi-Fi 7), and for 5G Mobile hotspots, the T830 can be paired with the Filogic 380 (dual-band 2×2 Wi-Fi 7). It also comes with capabilities for new Wi-Fi 7 features such as MLO (Multi-Link Operation) and support for 320MHz wide channels.

From the looks, the Mi Portable Mouse 2 looks like a successor to the Mi Portable Wireless Mouse that launched in India this year. However, unlike the latter, it has a darker silver version and a Black color variant. Also, at the back, it has a DPI switch which according to the company is 4-way adjustable.

At the front, we see a similar circular layout for the mouse-click buttons. However, there is an additional button that is for the dual-mode switch. Speaking of which, the Mouse supports dual-mode connection. Users can connect through a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and via the Bluetooth 4.2. This Bluetooth connectivity is provided by a Telink Low-Energy Bluetooth chip.

Once done, you can easily switch between the two screens with the button. That said, the mouse also has the usual Left, Right Click buttons and a two-way scroll wheel. The outer body of the mouse is built using Anodized Aluminum Alloy through a sandblasting process. The buttons and wheel have improved less-noisy clicks thanks to the soft rubber material.

This portable mouse, aimed at home and office use, runs on one AA battery. Xiaomi says the battery will last up to a year which is similar to the predecessor. And, it also has a low-battery reminder so you can be aware when the battery is going to die.

The crowdfunding price of the Mi Portable Mouse 2 is 79 yuan($12) and shipment starts from January 13. But if we look at the official website, it says the otherwise retail price is 99 yuan($15).

Just like Wi-Fi 5, Wi-Fi 6 operates on two frequencies – 2.4GHz and 5GHz. However, some Wi-Fi 6 devices will be able to operate on a third spectrum (frequency) and will go by a different name.

Wi-Fi 6 + 6GHz = Wi-Fi 6E

In January of this year, the Wi-Fi Alliance announced that Wi-Fi 6 devices that can operate on the third spectrum which is 6GHz will be called Wi-Fi 6E devices to distinguish them from those that can only operate on 2.4GHz and 5GHz.

What are the advantages of the 6GHz spectrum?

With Wi-Fi 6 operating on the same frequency as older Wi-Fi standards such as Wi-Fi 4 and Wi-Fi 5, there is bound to be interference. However, with support for 6GHz which has wider channel sizes, there will be less interference and faster speeds.

The capacity of 6GHz is enormous and will be efficiently used by Wi-Fi 6 and newer versions of Wi-Fi – Wi-Fi Alliance

The press release by the Wi-Fi Alliance earlier this year said the 6GHz spectrum solves the Wi-Fi spectrum shortage problem by providing contiguous spectrum blocks for 14 additional 80MHz channels and 7 additional 160MHz channels. These additional channels are required by high-bandwidth applications that need faster data throughput such as HD-video streaming, AR, and VR.

Devices with support for Wi-Fi 6E will also be able to support more users at the same time even in very dense and congested areas thanks to the wider channels that 6GHz brings.

When will you be able to buy Wi-Fi 6E devices?

Wi-Fi 6E chipsets need to be made first. Broadcom already has one and says that the chipset will begin shipping to clients by late fall, 2020 which is in time for the holidays. Other manufacturers will most likely follow the same pattern.

Do note that you not only have to purchase a Wi-Fi 6E router, but your devices also have to support Wi-Fi 6E. So while routers may be available soon, devices such as phones and computers may take a bit more time.

Wi-Fi 6 (IEEE 802.11 AX) is the new wireless standard just as 5G is the new network standard. This post will try to explain all you need to know about the new wireless standard in the simplest way possible.

What is Wi-Fi 6?

Wi-Fi 6 is the latest wireless technology that brings significant improvements to the wireless standard. It was created as a solution to our increasing needs for data connectivity and bandwidth requirement as there are now more devices that need to be connected to the internet.

How fast is Wi-Fi 6?

Wi-Fi 6 is way faster than Wi-Fi 5. Its speeds can reach up to 9.6Gbps compared to Wi-Fi 5’s 3.5 Gbps. These speeds are the maximum for both wireless standards but you most likely will never reach those speeds in real-world usage.

How is Wi-Fi 6 (802.11 AX) different from Wi-Fi 5 (802.11 AC)?

Speed isn’t the only difference between Wi-Fi 6 and WiFi 5. Its greatest strength is its capacity to support more devices while keeping the speeds up. Wi-Fi 6 supports 4x the bandwidth than Wi-Fi 5, so all the additional devices that are now connected to your network do not slow down your network speeds.

One pretty straightforward way the benefits of Wi-Fi 6 is explained is by using trucks and highways. Think of Wi-Fi 5 as a road with one lane for vehicles going in one direction and another lane for vehicles going in another direction. For Wi-Fi 6, you have more lanes for each direction. This means even with more cars on the road (read more devices on the network), the fact that there are more lanes, means speeds are not reduced.

Wi-Fi 6 is able to achieve this thanks to two new technologies – MU-MIMO (Multi-User, Multiple-Input and Multiple-Output) and OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access).

MU-MIMO (8 x 8) is explained by using delivery trucks. MU-MIMO on Wi-Fi 5 allows routers to connect to 4 devices at a time (even if there are more) but with Wi-Fi 6, the number of devices is increased to 8. So it is like having more trucks going to deliver goods to your customers.

OFDMA even takes it further. Bringing back the analogy of the trucks, OFDMA allows a truck to carry goods (data packets) to multiple locations (devices) at the same time. The image below should help you understand better.

Advantages of Wi-Fi 6

While discussing how Wi-Fi 6 differs from Wi-Fi 5, we have mentioned some of its advantages such as speed, support for more devices without sacrificing speeds, as well as efficiency but there are more.

Security: Wi-Fi 6 brings a new security protocol called WPA3 (Wi-Fi Protected Access version 3) which replaces WPA2. WPA3 encrypts the connection between your device and the access point it is connected to. It also protects against brute-force attacks even if your Wi-Fi password is weak. WPA3 is not new as some current non-WiFi 6 devices and routers support it but with Wi-Fi 6, it is now a requirement.

More Data with 1024-QAM: Wi-Fi 6 connections are able to carry more data thanks to 1024-QAM which is also 25% faster than Wi-Fi 5’s 256-QAM.

No more Wi-Fi conflicts thanks to BSS Color: You know how there can be interference from neighboring connections, Wi-Fi 6 solves that with what is called BSS (Sase Service Station) Color. What it does is it marks other networks and causes the router to ignore them.

Improved battery life: With Wi-Fi 6, battery consumption is reduced thanks to a feature called Target Wake Time. What this does is it creates a schedule when devices check-in with a router. That way, a device doesn’t have to be awake all the time if there is no need to.

How Do I get Wi-Fi 6?

To get Wi-Fi 6, you need to get a device that is Wi-Fi 6 certified. Devices that are certified will have the logo below.

It is important that you know that you need both a Wi-Fi 6 device and a Wi-Fi 6 router to enjoy the benefits Wi-Fi 6 brings. This is the same way one will have to purchase a pair of headphones that connect via Bluetooth 5.0 and having a phone that has Bluetooth 5.0 for you to be able to enjoy the benefits of Bluetooth 5.0.

Available devices (phones) with Wi-Fi 6

The following smartphones support Wi-Fi 6:

iPhone 11 series

Samsung Galaxy 10 series

Samsung Galaxy S20 series

Samsung Galaxy Note10 series

Xiaomi Mi 10 series

ZTE Axon 10s Pro

Black Shark 3 series

It is important that you remember that you will also need to get a Wi-Fi 6 router such as Xiaomi’s Mi AIoT Router AX3600.

As more devices launch, Wi-Fi 6 should become more popular but do not expect all phones to come with the new wireless standard. That said, most flagships should have it.

UP NEXT: Huawei Executive: Wi-Fi 6 phones are not as fast as the 2-year old Mate 20

The information was shared on Weibo, which is a Chinese microblogging website, earlier today (7th February 2020).

For those unaware, Wi-Fi 6 is the latest standard in WiFi technology (Wireless Fidelity). It is also known as AX WiFi or 802.11ax WiFi and is the next generation succeeding the current 802.11ac WiFi standard. The latter which is commonly used in most routers suffers from a series of issues, including network congestion, lacking coverage area and the constant need to switch SSIDs. However, Wi-Fi 6 seems to improve in all of the above mentioned areas.

Compared to its predecessor, Wi-Fi 6 optimizes power consumption and coverage capabilities of a router, supporting multi high speed concurrent connections. In other words, the connection is stronger with a wider range and can better support multiple connections at the same time. Other benefits include lower latency overall, high rate of data transmission and more.

Editor’s Pick: Chinese Smartphone Shipments to drop significantly in Q1 2020 due to the epidemic: Digitimes

Xiaomi’s upcoming flagship Wi-Fi router offering is expected to support this new WiFi technology standard. Furthermore, the Xiaomi Mi 10 series, the Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro are also expected to support Wi-Fi 6, making the router compatible with the smartphones as well. Currently, the new standard has yet to be highly adopted and become more active in commercial circulation.

Unfortunately, information is still scarce regarding the launch and finer details are unavailable, for now. The new Xiaomi router could share the stage with the Mi 10 series but is also likely to be launched separately as well. So stay tuned for more developments regarding upcoming Xiaomi launches.

The rollout of the free Wi-Fi service to cover the entire city is expected to be completed by 2022.

With an aim to provide free Wi-Fi access to the city’s residents and visitors, the city government has confirmed that the current free Wi-Fi service, which already covers 31 percent of the city, will be expanded to cover 100 percent of key public areas and residential areas by the year 2022.

The report reveals that the plan is to cover around 326 sq. km. of the city which includes areas that have been categorized as relevant to everyday life, such as parks, parking lots and recreational sites. Do note that places like individual households, schools, factories and warehouses are excluded from the plan.

The city is reportedly planning to set up 23,750 wireless access points by the end of year 2022, which represents triple the numbers than the current wireless access points which stands at 7,420.

The installation of new free wireless access points will begin with public venues such as bus stops and the public transportation system. It’s noteworthy that Seoul city first opened up its Wi-Fi network to the public in 2011 and has been increasing wireless access points across the city since then.

The idea of increasing free Wi-Fi coverage in the city is a part of the city’s 102.7 billion-won (approximately $859 million) plan to build a smart network that encompasses Wi-Fi and internet of things (IoT) technology. It is expected to enable various IoT services such as smart parking services and safety services for the elderly living alone.

Of the total budget mentioned, 47 percent of that will be used to expand the public Wi-Fi network while the remaining 52 percent will be flagged for building wired and wireless telecommunications infrastructure and developing IoT technology.

According to the estimate of the officials, when the plan is completed, it will cut annual mobile charges by 3.87 trillion won for around 6.12 million users who use 9.6GB of internet data on average each month.

In a steps towards that, researchers from the University of Washington have revealed that they have developed 3D-printed plastic objects that can connect to the internet without any electronics or batteries in the object itself.

The 3D printing plastic objects and sensors can collect useful data and communicate with other WiFi-connected devices entirely on their own.

This was recently presented at the Association for Computing Machinery’s SIGGRAPH Conference and Exhibition on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques in Asia

Commenting on this, Vikram Iyer, a graduate student on the project, said:

Our goal was to create something that just comes out of your 3D printer at home and can send useful information to other devices. But the big challenge is how do you communicate wirelessly with WiFi using only plastic? That’s something that no one has been able to do before.

In the research paper, the researchers mentions that they have found a way to 3D-print plastic objects that can absorb or reflect ambient Wi-Fi signals and send data wirelessly to any Wi-Fi receiver.

The team employed backscatter techniques to allow devices to exchange information. They replaced some functions normally performed by electrical components with mechanical motion activated by springs, gears, switches and other parts that can be 3D printed — borrowing from principles that allow battery-free watches to keep time.

They have created an anemometer which measures wind speed, and attached it to a gear. When the gear spins, the teeth connect with an antenna embedded and that antenna reflects ambient Wi-Fi signal, which can be decoded by a Wi-Fi receiver.

Read More: eSUN introduces 3D-printing wire storage box, eBOX at Formnext 2017 Exhibition

The team has also said that they are making their 3D models available to the public so that 3D printing enthusiasts can utilize these objects at home.

This performance oriented chip which was initially only available on upper mid-range flagship smartphones, suddenly came as a savior to the low-end devices, breathing in new life into them. All the major Chinese manufacturers have used this chip quite frequently on devices like the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3, Meizu MX5 and even LeTV Le 1S. However, it looks like the chip may have some problems in connecting to Wi-Fi.

Back when the Meizu MX5 was released, many users reported in various forums about problems associated with the phone’s Wi-Fi. Similarly, Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 users have also had similar complaints. Even Le 1S users have reported of similar issues with Wi-Fi. Earlier it was said that MIUI or Flyme OS could the reason for this issue. But since many users from different manufacturers are facing the same issue, it looks like the MT6795 Helio X10 chipset that’s running inside all these devices could be the real culprit.

So, if you have been facing Wi-Fi connectivity issues on your MT6795 powered phone, it’s likely that your chipset which integrates the Wi-Fi chip is the cause of the problem. We still don’t know how severe is this issue, but even if it’s minor, connectivity drops is not something we would expect on phones from respectable manufacturers like Xiaomi or Meizu.

Let us know in the comments section below whether you have come across such Wi-Fi drops in your Helio X10 powered smartphones.
