A recent report hinted that Xiaomi could bring back the Mix lineup with the Mix 5. The claim was based on internal database entries referencing a device codenamed “hongkong” with the model number Q5.

This detail led to speculation around a 2026 release window and a possible continuation of Xiaomi’s Mix branding, which has historically been tied to more experimental hardware.

However, a reliable Chinese tipster, Digital Chat Station, has refuted the claims, stating that there is no such product as the Mix 5 in development. According to the tipster, the Q5 model number isn’t tied to a Mix device at all, but rather to Xiaomi’s next-generation flagship, likely part of the Xiaomi 18 series.

What was rumored

The previous leak about the supposed Mix 5 hinted at an under-display camera similar to the one seen on the Xiaomi Mix 4. It was also expected to feature experimental ideas, such as a magnetic lens system for the rear camera. Xiaomi had previously teased such an accessory in 2025, and reports suggested it could be nearing mass production.

The rumored hardware also included Qualcomm’s next flagship chip, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro, along with HyperOS 4 out of the box. There were even hints at a broader global release, something the Mix lineup has typically avoided.

Now that the rumor has been refuted, these experimental ideas seem more likely to be reserved for the Xiaomi 18 series.

Separate leaks around that lineup describe a compact flagship with a next-generation 2nm chipset, possibly the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, along with dual 200-megapixel cameras and a battery capacity of around 7,000mAh. Xiaomi is also said to be working on a slimmer design with ultra-narrow bezels using LIPO packaging.

It appears that experiments with smartphones are working well for Xiaomi, as seen with the recent Xiaomi 17 series. Reports now suggest the company is preparing to launch the MIX 5 as the next chapter in its experimental smartphone lineup. Multiple leaks indicate the device is expected to debut ahead of Apple’s iPhone 18 series.

The MIX series has been dormant since the release of the MIX 4 in August 2021. That model introduced Xiaomi’s first under-display camera and a full ceramic unibody. The MIX 4 featured a Snapdragon 888+ chipset, a 6.67-inch AMOLED screen, and a 20MP camera hidden under the display. However, the front-facing camera performance remained a weak point due to technical limitations at the time.

Xiaomi now appears to be addressing that gap with the MIX 5. According to popular tipster Digital Chat Station, an unnamed manufacturer is working on a new smartphone project that features a quad-curved display and an under-display front camera. Although the tipster did not name the brand, discussions in the community strongly suggest the device refers to the MIX 5.

In addition to the display and camera upgrades, tipster Smart Pikachu recently hinted that the Explorer Edition (potential MIX 5) will incorporate under-display 3D facial recognition. If true, Xiaomi could become the first smartphone maker to commercialize this technology on a mass-market device.

Under-display 3D face unlock has long been considered one of the final hurdles in delivering a truly seamless front panel, and the MIX 5 may be the first to implement it successfully.

According to rumors, the phone is expected to make its debut at Lei Jun’s annual speech, a stage traditionally reserved for Xiaomi’s most important products. The MIX 5 could signal a bold return for the series that once redefined smartphone design.

Xiaomi kicked off its ambitious Mix line back in 2016. It was among the first phones to offer a true all-screen smartphone without a hole-punch or pill-shaped cutout for selfies. 

Instead, these phones tucked the camera beneath the display. The last phone in the series, the Mix 4, launched in 2021. And since then? Nothing.

While Xiaomi didn’t continue the line, a new rumor suggests that the company is still refining the tech behind it. 

Xiaomi Mix 5 soon?

According to the reliable Digital Chat Station on Weibo, the underlying tech has quietly been “iterating”. This likely refers to the under-display camera (UDC) system. 

DCS further claims that the current iteration is “at the highest level in the industry” and that it will be “mass-produced on due course.” The tipster also gave an oddly specific “98.3721%”  possibility for it to happen.

The number could be a cryptic precision DCS is known for. But if anything, the leak suggests Xiaomi isn’t done chasing the Mix dream just yet.

UDC is tough to perfect

For under-display cameras to work, light needs to pass through the display and reach the camera sensor beneath. But most display panels aren’t great at transmitting light. 

To make it work, manufacturers have to tweak the pixel layout, essentially making part of the display more transparent. The result is often a noticeable reduction in pixel density over that area, which creates a “screen door” effect.

Back when Xiaomi launched the Mix 4, the UDC tech had gone through three iterations. The company introduced a “micro-drill” pixel arrangement to reduce light blockage and eliminate discoloration in the camera zone (what Xiaomi calls the CUP, or Camera Under Panel, area). 

The early versions of the tech dropped the OLED resolution in the camera area from 400PPI to 200PPI, but Xiaomi managed to keep it at 400PPI in the Mix 4 to solve the screen door effect.

Still, the camera performance was just… fine. ZTE has arguably gone further with UDC innovation and has largely resolved the screen window issue. But even its latest efforts haven’t fully matched the image quality of a standard front-facing camera.

Now, with signs that Xiaomi is refining the technology again, the big question is whether it can finally close that gap.

Earlier this year, the Xiaomi MIX 5 was spotted in the IMEI database and it had been officially confirmed that the device will not be unveiled in 2024. Of course, leaks about this smartphone keep coming. Digital Chat Station reports that the Xiaomi MIX 5 will come with an under-display camera and unibody ceramic design. We already know that the device will come with an under-display camera.

Xiaomi MIX 5 is coming

A prototype expected to be the Xiaomi MIX 5 was spotted on Geekbench 6. This prototype smartphone was codenamed “Suiren” and powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. A flagship MIX series device to be introduced in 2025 is not expected to be unveiled with the previous year’s flagship SOC. They probably tested the first prototype devices with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. I expect the Xiaomi MIX 5 to use Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. This, of course, has not been officially confirmed and has not been spotted in any lines of code.

There is no certainty whether the Xiaomi MIX 5 will be unveiled or not. If Xiaomi has a problem with the device, it may abandon the launch. The smartphone is currently in the prototype stage and we are speculating that it might be launched in 2025. When we examine the codename “Suiren”, we see Chinese mythology. Suiren is known as a cultural hero who introduced fire in order for people to survive. The previous Xiaomi MIX 4 had the codename “odin”.

Digital Chat Station stated that the device may come with a ceramic build, like the previous MIX series. This is an already existing tradition of the Xiaomi MIX series. This tradition is expected to continue with the Xiaomi MIX 5. We hope Xiaomi will launch the MIX 5 and we will have the chance to experience the device.

Recently, tipster Digital Chat Station leaked key details about an upcoming smartphone that will feature a pair of under-display cameras. It is speculated that he could be talking about the Xiaomi Mix 5.

Xiaomi Mix 5: Alleged key specifications leaked

In the above-shown Weibo post, DCS claimed that a mysterious new flagship phone that is currently being tested is equipped with the Snapdragon 8-series chipset. The display of the phone has ultra-thin bezels on all four sides and seems to have a bezel-less look.

He added that the device is equipped with two under-display cameras. It appears that one of the rear-facing cameras of the phone is a telephoto lens that offers up to 4x optical zoom.

The tipster did not mention the name of the device, but the display design and the inclusion of two under-screen cameras suggest that he could be talking about the Xiaomi Mix 5. There is a possibility that the said device could be a ZTE flagship phone, as the brand has been consistently launching phones with under-display cameras for the past few years. Hence, it is advisable to digest this report with a pinch of salt.

Coming back to the Mix 5, recent reports have claimed that the brand may not have plans to launch it this year. While the device has been recently spotted in the IMEI database with the 2503AVP01C model number, it may break cover in March 2025. In related news, Xiaomi has reportedly planned to launch two Mix-branded phones this year. The first half of 2024 may see the arrival of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2-powered Xiaomi Mix Flip, while the Mix Fold 4 featuring the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 may launch in the remaining half of the year.

The tipster did not provide any additional details about this mysterious device. A recent report from GSMChina indicates that Xiaomi is in the process of developing a new device named the Xiaomi Mix 5 in China. However, do not get too excited about it yet, as there is something that might dampen the excitement about its launch.

Xiaomi Mix 5 in the works

The publication revealed that the Xiaomi Mix 5 has appeared in the GSMA IMEI database with model number 2503AVP01C. The starting four numbers hint that the device may launch in March 2025. So, there is a possibility that it may launch with the Xiaomi 15 Ultra around the same time in the coming year.

The said model number belongs to the Chinese variant of the Xiaomi Mix 5, which suggests that there may not be any global or Indian variants of the device. So, what did tipster DCS reveal? We will have to wait for further reports to know more about the said device.

Meanwhile, Xiaomi is also said to be working on the Xiaomi Mix Flip for the Chinese market. It will be the company’s first flip-style foldable phone. So far, reports have revealed that it has the 2311BPN23C model number, and it is said to feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset.

The device is said to feature a large 6.73-inch display with a resolution of 3200 x 1440 pixels, which is likely to be an AMOLED panel. Under the hood, the MIX 5 is rumored to be powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, paired with a generous 12GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. The device is also expected to come with a sizable 4820mAh battery to keep it running all day long. In addition, the image shows that the MIX 5 will run on MIUI 14, based on Android 13. Overall, these specifications indicate that the MIX 5 will be a powerful and capable device that could be worth waiting for.

In the past, it was rumored that the Xiaomi MIX 5 would come with an impressive 200W fast charging capability. It is unclear if this feature will be included in the upgraded version of the device. Furthermore, earlier reports suggested that the MIX 5 would be equipped with a 48MP front-facing camera and a triple-camera setup on the back. Xiaomi after releasing the Xiaomi 12 series a few months back now has a couple of other flagship phones in the pipeline. There’s the much-leaked Xiaomi 12 Ultra and then there’s the MIX FOLD series, although a tipster now says that one of the models from the bunch will be skipped this year.

The Xiaomi MIX series caters to the enthusiast market and as such offers experimental, bleeding-edge tech. It currently comprises the more conventional phone design in the form of the MIX series and the newer foldable lineup sold under the MIX FOLD series. The last model from the former was the Xiaomi MIX 4 from August 2021 but tipster Ice Universe has revealed that its successor will not be launched this year, contrary to many previous reports.

Xiaomi will be focusing solely on the Xiaomi MIX FOLD 2 instead, which according to leaks will be the world’s first foldable phone with a 360° hinge, meaning the device can be folded in both directions.

It’s also reported that the Xiaomi MIX FOLD 2 is expected to be launched in June this year, carrying model number 22061218C. Codenamed zizhan, it will only be available in China, as has been the case lately with every MIX offering. The phone is equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip and adopts a 2.5K LTPO high refresh rate internal screen.

A better aspect ratio for the external screen is expected along with an improved, less-visible crease. Crease-less foldable phones seem to be smartphone OEM’s biggest fixation this year. A trend first started with the OPPO Find N, we should be seeing even more foldables with smoother inside displays.

Xiaomi MIX 5 will be the next flagship offering from the Chinese tech giant. The smartphone’s leaks have been sporadic lately and the only news we learned about the series recently was for the Mix Fold 2. Nevertheless, the Xiaomi MIX 5 is back in the news, this time it has passed the Geekbench certification revealing its performance, ahead of launch.

The Xiaomi MIX 5 has emerged on the Geekbench certification with model number 2203121C. The device scores 1,257 points in the single-core department and 3,456 points in the multi-core department. The phone has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC inside that’s clocked at a base frequency of 1.78GHz. It is an octa-core chipset with 4 cores clocked @1.79Ghz, the other 3 cores clocked @2.50GHz, and the last core clocked @3.00GHz.

The smartphone has 12GB of RAM and boots on the latest Android 12 OS. We expect the phone to come with different RAM and storage options and have MIUI 13 on top of the Android OS.

Xiaomi MIX 5 and MIX 5 Pro Specifications(Rumored)

Earlier, news broke that the Xiaomi MIX 5 will come with improved cameras. It may bring Leica-powered sensors. The device is rumored to come with a 48MP front-facing camera. It is expected to have a 50MP OIS lens, a 48MP ultra-wide sensor, and a 48MP telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom.

Other details of the MIX 5 are yet to be known. But what we do know, is that the MIX 5 will be accompanied by the MIX 5 Pro. Interestingly, the Xiaomi MIX 5 Pro could have the rumored Surge C2 chipset.

To those unaware, Surge is the company’s self-developed chip that helps in the camera performance of the phone. The last chip was the Surge C1, which was seen in the MIX Fold. Having a successor chip in the MIX 5 Pro will be a good upgrade for the MIX lineup.

Speaking of upgrades, the MIX 5 Pro is expected to bring the same 48MP front-facing camera as the vanilla MIX 5. It is rumored to have a 50MP OIS main lens with a whopping 8192 x 6144 pixels resolution. It will be assisted by a 48MP ultra-wide sensor and a 48MP OIS telephoto lens with a 5x optical zoom feature. This is a slightly better camera setup than the vanilla MIX 5 with the OIS and up to 5x zoom support.

After the discounted price, the smartphone costs CNY 4899(~$770).

Notably, this is even cheaper than the launch price of the base variant of the Mi Mix 4. The base variant was priced at CNY 4,999(~$770) at the time of launch. Having said that, at the price of CNY 4899(~$770), the Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 makes for a good flagship phone.

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 comes with a 6.67-inch curved AMOLED display with a 10-bit color depth. The smartphone has Gorilla Glass Victus protection and the screen has an under-display camera. It sports a 20MP selfie snapper that offers a 4-in-1 Superpixel imaging sensor. It has a 108MP + 8MP + 13MP triple rear cameras.

Under the hood, it is powered by the Snapdragon 888+ SoC and has a 4,500mAh battery. The device has support for 120W wired fast charging and 50W wireless fast charging support. The phone has an in-display fingerprint scanner and boots on Android 11 OS.

In related news, this year, Xiaomi is prepping to launch the Xiaomi Mix 5 phones, and the specs look interesting. The Pro model will have a 6.73-inch WQHD+ 120Hz refresh rate AMOLED screen. It will have a 50MP Leica branded lens.

Xiaomi is reportedly working on the Xiaomi MIX 5 series of flagship phones. The lineup may include two models such as Xiaomi MIX 5 and MIX 5 Pro. A fresh report claims that the Pro model could be equipped with the Surge C2 ISP.

The Xiaomi MIX 5 and MIX 5 Pro have respective shortened model numbers such as L1A and L1. Xiaomi offered its first Surge ISP called the Surge C1 with the Xiaomi MIX Fold last year. According to Xiaomiui, the “MIPISEL” feature has been found in the Mi code of the MIX 5 Pro. It relates to the Surge C1 chip, which was found on the MIX Fold and the company’s unannounced flip phone. The MIX 5 and MIX 5 Pro are likely to differ in two departments: camera sensors and camera processor.

The report states that the second-generation Surge C2 ISP or the existing Surge C1 could be made available on the MIX 5 Pro. It further states that the MIX 5 may feature the Surge C1 chip. At present, there are no details available on the features of the C2.

To recollect, the Surge C1 controlled the multi-functional telephoto camera that was coupled with the liquid-lens technology on the MIX Fold. The 3A algorithm of the Surge C1 regulated autofocus, automatic white balance, and automatic exposure simultaneously. It assisted MIX Fold users to capture better shots in low-light conditions.

Xiaomi MIX 5, MIX 5 Pro camera details

The Xiaomi MIX 5 and MIX 5 Pro will have a 48-megapixel front-facing camera. The MIX 5’s rear camera setup will have an OIS-enabled 50-megapixel (8192 x 6144 pixels resolution) main camera, a 48-megapixel ultrawide lens, and a 48-megapixel camera with 2x optical zoom. On the other side, the MIX 5 Pro will have an OIS-ready 50-megapixel (8192 x 6144 pixels resolution) primary camera, a 48-megapixel ultrawide lens, and an OIS-assisted 48-megapixel lens with 5x optical zoom.

The resolution of 8192 x 6144 pixels resolution is associated with 50-megapixel Sony sensors such as IMX766 and IMX707. Hence, the MIX 5 and MIX 5 Pro models may come equipped with these camera sensors.

Xiaomi is reportedly testing a new under-display camera with a high-resolution solution that has been paired with an FHD+ display from Huaxing Optoelectronics.

Prior to this, Xiaomi had launched the Xiaomi MIX 4 as the very first commercially-selling smartphone from the company with an under-display. Its resolution was 20MP.

However, upcoming devices with the new UD camera tech will feature a much denser pixel count with resolutions higher than 20MP. The increased resolution will be further enhanced by improvements made to the clarity of selfies (via My Drivers).

It is worth noting here that while under-screen cameras have indeed come a long way, their quality is still no match for regular selfie cameras. But with Xiaomi’s strides in the field, the gap between the two is expected to close further.

Details about the upcoming devices that will be making use of the technology are scarce at the moment, but we expect to see more leaks drop soon.

Under-display camera tech from Xiaomi adopts a new pixel arrangement with a special circuit designed to hide more components under the RGB sub-pixels, which effectively improves light transmittance and allows clearer results.

It was recently learned that Xiaomi MIX 5 with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip has commenced trial production. While finer details about the device are unavailable at the moment, it is also expected to come with an under-screen snapper at the front just like its predecessor. It’s possible that the sensor may even sport a resolution higher than 20MP.

Earlier this month, Qualcomm had announced its latest flagship grade processor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. While the Xiaomi 12 series is set to be among the early adopters, a new report has suggested that the company is also working on another device that will feature this new SoC as well.

According to @数码闲聊站 on Weibo (a Chinese microblogging website), the brand has began the trial production for the MIX 5 series. While initially it was rumored that the model could sport the higher end Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus chip, the latest leak from Chinese tipster states otherwise. Furthermore, the leak also revealed that the company’s MIX 5 lineup will also still feature the Samsung variant of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

For those unaware, we had previously reported on Qualcomm moving a part of its Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip production from Samsung to TSMC. The reasons for this were production issues which forced the chipmaker to turn to the Taiwanese semiconductor giant. So, the TSMC version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 was expected to launch in the second half of next year.

However, since the tipster had previously mentioned that the MIX 5 series will be launching sometime between June and July, it makes sense that it will likely still feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC manufactured by Samsung. Unfortunately, finer details about this upcoming high end devices is still currently unknown, but it is likely to feature cutting edge smartphone technology. So stay tuned for more updates.

Xiaomi introduced the Xiaomi Mi 11 in December last year. Later, the company introduced other models such as Mi 11 Pro, Mi 11 Ultra, and Mi 11i with flagship specifications. Hence, it is speculated that the upcoming Xiaomi 12 series will include multiple flagship models. While the rumor mill has already tipped the existence of the Xiaomi 12 Ultra, a new report claims that this model could be accompanied by another device named the Xiaomi 12 Ultra Enhanced Edition.

Publication Xiaomiui.net reported that it has come across Xiaomi 12 Ultra and Xiaomi 12 Ultra Enhanced Edition devices in the Mi code. These models are said to be codenamed as Loki and Thor.

The publication has further learned through the Mi code that the Loki model is based on Thor, and the latter is based on Zeus. To those who are unaware, the Zeus model is expected to debut with the Xiaomi 12 Pro moniker in the Chinese market.

The Loki device has an L1A model number and is likely to debut in China with the Xiaomi 12 Ultra name. On the other hand, the Thor device’s model number is L1 and is expected to break cover with the Xiaomi 12 Ultra Enhanced Edition in the home market.

The publication added that the L1 model has an in-display camera. To recollect, Xiaomi announced the Xiaomi MIX 4 as its first phone with an in-display camera. Hence, it is likely that the L1 may debut as the Xiaomi MIX 5 and not 12 Ultra Enhanced Edition.

As far as the specs are concerned, it has been found that the alleged 12 Ultra and 12 Ultra Enhanced Edition will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen1 (aka Snapdragon 898) chipset. The Ultra models are expected to feature a 50-megapixel main camera, which could be the Samsung GN5 sensor. Both models also have a 48-megapixel camera with 2x zoom, a 48-megapixel camera with 5x zoom, and another 48-megapixel camera with 10x zoom.

The above-shown image, which gives a look at the multi-camera mode, suggests that both devices have a total of five cameras, which includes the front-facing snapper. It appears that both models will offer up to 120x zoom and 15x video zoom. It is speculated that the 12 Ultra models may remain exclusive to the Chinese market.

Xiaomi’s upcoming flagship — the Xiaomi 12 — will reportedly be hitting the mass production stage as early as next month. It will be joined by the Xiaomi MIX 5 later on.

As per reliable tech blogger Digital Chat Station, the standard variant of the Xiaomi 12 will be the first to go on sale, presumably in December. The Pro and Ultra variants will follow soon.

A similar release pattern was seen with the current generation flagship models as well, with the Xiaomi Mi 11 launching in January this year and the Mi 11 Ultra following a few months later in April.

The Xiaomi 12, being a top-of-the-line phone, will obviously be packing specifications to live up to its flagship tag. As such, it is known to be powered by Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 898 processor. Rumors have it that the phone will actually be the very first to feature the chip.

The Snapdragon 898 processor will be using Samsung’s 4nm manufacturing process and will employ an octa-core CPU comprised of a Cortex-X2-based main core clocked at 3.0 GHz along with 3x Cortex-A710-based performance cores running at 2.5 GHz. The CPU will be paired with Adreno 730 GPU to take care of the graphically-intensive workloads.

The Xiaomi 12 is expected to have a curved display and a center-aligned punch hole to house the selfie snapper. Its primary rear camera is known to be a Samsung ISOCELL HP1 sensor with a 50MP resolution.

Moving on to the Xiaomi MIX 5, it is expected to be released a month earlier next year when compared to the MIX 4’s release date. Digital Chat Station says that its development seems speedier than its previous generation.

The Xiaomi MIX 4 hit the shelves on August 10 this year so the MIX 5 will likely be going live sooner in either June or July, or perhaps even earlier.

The tech blogger further pointed out that the MIX 5 is still under early development stages and is yet to be finalized. Many aspects are still in the verification stage, a possible reason being that it is packed with cutting-edge tech.

Specifications expected with the phone include the Snapdragon 898, just like the Xiaomi 12, paired with a 2K 120Hz display. The RAM + ROM combo may top at 16GB+1TB. Its body is expected to be lighter than this year’s model.
