ZTE has increased its promotion in many regions, especially in Europe in the past few months. These promotions seem to be working as the company is now the fifth-largest smartphone maker in Europe for the first quarter of 2016. Counterpoint Technology Market Research report revealed that the company shipped a lot of smartphones in Europe early this year, bringing it to the fifth position in the region.

“We’re very excited by our achievement in Europe, especially given that there are so many other smartphone companies that are trying to gain popularity here,” said Jacky Zhang, CEO of EMEA and APAC, ZTE Mobile Devices. “As we continue to launch premium smartphones pegged with an affordable price tag, it makes it easier for consumers to try our devices. We are thankful for the support fans have given us and we’re confident that we’ll soon rise to number four in Europe.”

ZTE seems to be focused on the European market with its mid-range and high-end smartphones. This includes the company’s ZTE Blade as well as the high-end Axon series. The ZTE Axon 7 was recently released in China and the phone is quite the beast with advanced audio capabilities. The company confirms that the Axon 7 will be announced in Europe and it’s positive about the consumer demand for the device in the region. ZTE also revealed that it sold over 30 million Blade series smartphones by the end of 2015 and European regions such as Germany, France, Spain and UK were a few of the key markets.

The company has been increasing expansion activities in Europe in the past few months, establishing cooperation with large retailers for its smartphones. The company has even co-sponsored sports teams like the German football team, Borussia Mönchengladbach. In the next one and a half years, the company aims to increase its market share in Germany to 4%. Then there’s Spain, wherein the company enjoys a share of 4.4%. To further increase brand awareness, ZTE signed with Sevilla Football Club as the official smartphone partner and even sponsored the Copa del Rey Championship. Plus, there was the ZTE Experience Tour that we reported earlier that toured across Europe showing off the company’s smartphones.

So, it looks like ZTE’s promotions to increase its brand awareness in Europe are slowly paying off.

This reportedly comes as a result of ZTE’s decision to sell products using components from US companies to Iran. The Commerce Department retaliated to this by forcing US companies to apply for export licenses to sell to ZTE. With such restrcitions enforced by the department, these export licenses will most likely be denied.

While this will affect ZTE greatly, who relies on US suppliers for up to 43 percent of its components, US chipmakers will also be affected adversely. Qualcomm and Intel will no longer be able to sell its chipsets to the Chinese smartphone maker, possibly affecting its sales and revenue in the coming quarters.

Ban on sales to ZTE may not just result into short terms losses for these companies. Chinese Government has always stressed on being independent, and this might present as a good opportunity for ZTE to invest in component manufacturers in its home country. So, even if the ban is lifted in the coming months, not all of the company’s previous business might return back to US. So, it looks like companies like Qualcomm, Intel and even Broadcom could lose some business as a result of this ban.

The company has totally changed its image for better last year, releasing pretty impressive smartphones in the Axon and Blade lineup. In fact, the company unveiled two new devices this year at MWC, namely the ZTE Blade V7 and the V7 lite. Both are mid-range offerings aimed at budget customers who want a decent smartphone experience.

Apart from releasing value for money smartphones like the Axon Pro, the company is also investing in marketing. Recently, ZTE announced a sports marketing partnership with the Spanish football club Seville. This is not the first time the company is associating itself with sports, as the company has tie-ups with five different pro basketball teams.

Association with sports teams can be a good way to improve brand image, and this strategy has helped the company to push itself as the fourth largest smartphone maker in the United States. After establishing a strong presence in China and US, the company is now looking out to Europe to improve and expand its brand name in the region.

To build its brand in Europe, the company has started the ZTE Europe Tour. After the US, ZTE is now bringing its “Experience Buses” loaded with its devices in countries like Spain, Germany, Poland, Italy and France.

Aggressive marketing along with value for money smartphones will help the company to achieve its yearly target of 60 million units. We have seen a lot of Chinese smartphone lovers from Europe and it might be a good idea to leverage this interest to offer them better smartphone choices and experiences by focusing in the region.

ZTE has massive plans in its head for grabbing the U.S. market. ZTE has openly challenged Xiaomi, the leading and most popular Chinese smartphone maker. According to Lixin Cheng, the CEO of ZTE U.S. operations, the company has a target of increasing the sale twice than before, this year. The next plan is to bypass and go one step ahead of LG. LG has been at number 3 position in U.S. market. ZTE wants to dethrone LG and wants to fetch that number three spot.

The current position of ZTE in smartphone market is a bit confused. ZTE says that they are just a step down than the LG, i.e. they are at number four in U.S. smartphone market. But the data and market analysis by ComScore data in July didn’t include ZTE even in the top five positions. LG was at third position in this list. Reports suggests that ZTE is facing a dark phase in China as it has been removed from the top 5 smartphone companies of China. The CEO of US operations, Cheng mentioned that the ZTE has set up milestone by selling 10 million ZTE smartphones in the U.S. market during last year and now the company has aim to reach the target of 20 million. To achieve its goal, the company has planned to launch a diverse range of mixed range products, like ZTE cool, ZTE Nubia 5S Mini, etc.

A few months back, ZTE was thinking of increasing its advertising and marketing budget in the U.S. to $120 million. For this, the company has signed a deal with a well-known basketball team – Houston Rockets.

As mobile phone manufacturers are trying their best to drop their prices, ZTE wants to focus on ‘value for money’. The Chinese Manufacturer has said that they want to focus on devices priced in the range of $100 – 200 which is equivalent to INR 6000-12000. They would use phones priced in the above mentioned range to drive their sales in India and form a place for them in the Indian smartphone market.

CEO of ZTE India, Mr Yuan Kang also said that India was a huge market and they were confident that their range of phones would definitely suit the Indian customer mind set. He added that they were planning to launch around 5 handsets online and 3-4 models offline.

ZTE has recently launched their new model, the V5 to be sold online on Snapdeal.com. This phone is priced at INR 10,999. The ZTE V5 has a 5 inch screen and is powered by a 1.2 Ghz quad core processor. They prime feature of this handset is the 13 mega pixel rear camera and the 5 mega pixel front camera.
Sale of smartphones in India has grown by almost three-fold to reach around 44 million in 2013 due to the availability of pocket friendly devices brought out by firms like Micromax and Karbonn.
