Last month, on 25th October, Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi announced its next-generation Mi MIX series smartphone — the Xiaomi Mi MIX 3. It is the first smartphone to feature a magnetic slider design with a full-screen display.

During the launch, Xiaomi confirmed that it will be releasing a 5G version of the Mi MIX 3 in the first quarter of 2019. With the launch of the 5G model of Mi MIX 3 nearing, details related to the device is now surfacing online.

In the latest development, Xiaomi president Lin Bin posted an image on the Chinese microblogging platform Weibo which teases the upcoming Mi MIX 3 5G smartphone. On seeing the image closely, we can see the Android Pie logo in the top-left corner. In the top-right corner, there’s a 5G signal flag, suggesting that the phone is connected over a 5G network.

The development indicates that the Mi MIX 3 phone’s development is completed and is currently in the testing phase. If everything goes as per the plan, there’s a possibility that we could see the phone launching during CES 2019 in January or MWC 2019 in February.

Apart from Xiaomi, other manufacturers, including Samsung, OnePlus, and Huawei are working on a smartphone with 5G connectivity. OnePlus has also confirmed that it will be among the first to launch a 5G smartphone early next year.

The 5G variant of the Mi MIX 3 is expected to have the same specifications as the original model. The phone features a 6.39-inch AMOLED Full HD+ display with 19.5:9 aspect ratio and a 93.4 percent screen-to-body ratio.

Under the hood, it is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 octa-core processor. It packs up to 10GB of RAM and up to 256GB of internal storage. The Mi MIX 3 is equipped with two magnetic components underneath the display that enables the sliding mechanism. It can be customized for different functions such as accessing the dual selfie camera, answer phone calls, among others.

As for the camera, there’s a dual camera setup on the back featuring a 12-megapixel Sony IMX363 main sensor with f/1.8 aperture and another 12-megapixel Samsung S5k3M3+ secondary sensor with f/2.4 aperture. On the front side too there’s a dual camera setup — a 24-megapixel Sony IMX576 primary sensor and a 2-megapixel secondary sensor.

It is running on the latest MIUI 10 which is based Android 9 Pie operating system and also comes with the company’s Xiao AI voice assistant. The device is powered by a 3,200mAh battery that carries support for Quick Charge 4+ and 10W wireless charging.

Meanwhile, Xiaomi has scheduled a launch event in New York on 8th December. While it’s not yet known what the company is planning to unveil at the event, it is believed that Xiaomi could make an official entry in the US smartphone market with the launch of Mi MIX 3.
