Notes on iOS 17 is Struggling with Non-Latin Scripts

While Apple‘s Notes app on the new iOS 17 remains a handy tool for jotting down quick thoughts and creating lists, it’s not currently meeting the needs of global users who use right-to-left scripts like Hebrew or Arabic. Reports are piling up about its unstable cursor movement when used for these scripts, leaving users frustrated.

Apple being an international brand, it has products in every part of the world

AppleInsider highlighted the issue, and Apple Support’s forums are brimming with similar complaints. Users state that the cursor doesn’t align with the text when typing from right to left, making editing almost impossible. Simply put, if you need to insert a word in an existing sentence, the app throws it to the beginning of the line. And forget about backspacing; it’s as if the cursor believes it’s at the right end of the sentence.

Apple

What makes this a global issue is that it essentially disregards a portion of the world’s population. Apple is an international brand, and its products are used worldwide. Given that right-to-left languages like Hebrew and Arabic are spoken by millions, it’s a glaring oversight that impacts Apple’s global reputation. While for an English or French user, this might seem like a minor inconvenience, it’s a significant problem for someone for whom right-to-left is the norm.

Apple Support has responded to these complaints, asking users to direct message them about the specifics of the issue. It’s clear they’re gathering data to potentially fix this in future updates, but for now, it leaves a dent in Apple’s claim to provide a seamless user experience for all. As Apple works on a fix, users are advised to report bugs and provide as much detail as possible. Until then, if you’re a right-to-left script user, you might want to stick to pen and paper for your notes.

China’s Huge $13.7 Billion Investment Push in AI, Chipsets Points Towards a Strategic Shift

China Reform Holdings, a key investment arm of the government, has signaled its intention to channel at least 100 billion yuan (US$13.7 billion) into emerging industries considered crucial for the nation’s future. This move is more than just an investment; it’s a strategic pivot that aims to place China at the forefront of global technological innovation, especially as the country faces increased pressure from the United States.

China is clearly looking to eliminate dependence on US-based parts

The proposed fund is already drawing attention from a diverse set of investors, including state-owned enterprises and private sectors, signaling robust confidence in China’s new investment roadmap. This development is expected to culminate in the operational launch of the fund by the end of the year.

AI

While this isn’t China’s first endeavor into supporting its own tech industries—the Big Fund was established back in 2014 to bolster the domestic chip industry—it does indicate a more focused and urgent approach. The push has become increasingly vital as China races to reduce its dependence on foreign technology, particularly from the United States, which has been increasingly restrictive about funding Chinese tech sectors, such as AI, semiconductors, and biotechnology.

In contrast, the U.S government has recently tightened its grip on funding mechanisms through the Chips and Science Act, essentially limiting the expansion capacity for chip manufacturing in “countries of concern” like China. Such restrictions seem to have fueled China’s determination to be self-sufficient and globally competitive in key technological domains.

However, it’s not all smooth sailing. China’s ambitious plans are clouded by issues of waste and corruption, as seen in the previous Big Fund scandal involving its executives. Moreover, Beijing’s initiative to focus state financing on 15 emerging technology sectors shows it’s spreading its bets, but also highlights the potential for overreach.

The Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council aims to bump up investments from central government-owned enterprises in emerging technologies by 2 percentage points in 2023. Whether these orchestrated moves will lead to success or stumble upon the hurdles of the past remains a question. But one thing is clear: China is steadfast in its resolve to be a global tech leader, and it is willing to invest heavily to make that a reality.

Huawei and Chery Automobile Collab for the S7 Electric, Claiming to be Faster than Tesla Model S

Chery Automobile and Huawei Technologies are all set to stir up the electric vehicle (EV) market with the debut of their joint venture, Luxeed. The brand’s first offering, the S7, is slated to hit Chinese roads this November. But here’s the twist: It aims to not only compete with, but also outdo Tesla’s popular Model S.

Huawei is already struggling to enter the US market, so it’s trying to compete

Huawei’s Richard Yu Chengdong has been vocal about the S7’s potential, although exact specs are still hush-hush. With an aim to woo China’s burgeoning middle class, who have shown a penchant for modern digital features like voice controls and self-driving tech, the S7 seems to be positioning itself as the go-to EV for tech enthusiasts.

Huawei Electric

What makes Luxeed special is the confluence of Chery’s automotive expertise and Huawei’s tech prowess. Chery, already on an upward trend with a 17% increase in EV deliveries last year, brings manufacturing clout to the table. Huawei, meanwhile, is diversifying its portfolio by entering the EV arena after grappling with U.S. sanctions. Its Huawei HI system, launched last year, brings cutting-edge computing and autonomous driving capabilities.

According to Gao Shen, an independent analyst, the Luxeed brand is “more than the sum of its parts,” benefiting from both Chery’s manufacturing capabilities and Huawei’s tech innovation. As the Chinese EV market is expected to swell by a staggering 55% this year, the Luxeed S7 has its work cut out for it.

The Chinese EV market is already buzzing with local brands like Nio, Li Auto, and Xpeng inching closer to Tesla‘s premium EV dominance. But Luxeed’s S7 could be the wildcard entry that disrupts the status quo, leveraging its dual parentage to offer something that is both technically advanced and locally grounded. Only time will tell if the consumer base accepts this in the future.

Apple continues to expand its product line. The company’s latest offerings were introduced at the beginning of September and are part of the 15 series. This series, consisting of the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max, has managed to attract attention from users all over the world with their features and design. It appears that India is among the countries where Apple’s new phones have gained significant interest.

Based on reports, the company expects to increase its market share from 5% in the first half of 2023 to over 7% by December, thanks to the Pro and Pro Max models. Here are the details…

Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max Models Set to Gain Market Share in India

According to the market research company Counterpoint, Apple is forecasted to secure 7% of total smartphone sales in India between July and December 2023, which is an uptick from the 5% share observed in the previous six months. This doesn’t come as a surprise for the company. Last year, Apple opened physical stores in India and increased the number of marketing campaigns in the region. Given this, we can presume the US tech giant’s rise was anticipated.

iPhone 15 Pro Max Apple Q4 growth

Let’s also not forget that Apple is making efforts to produce in India. Thus, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that the brand’s value is on the rise in various categories. Apple’s newest iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models, set to be available for purchase on Friday. Nabila Popal, Research Director at IDC, emphasized the rapid growth of the premium smartphone domain in India, saying:

“The premium smartphone market in India has surged from a mere 0.8% of the entire market in 2019 to an impressive 6.1% in the first half of 2023. Apple’s triumphant run is majorly responsible for this upswing.”

In the segment dedicated to smartphones priced above $800, Apple is already reigns supreme in India. The company held an astounding 67% market share in the first half of the year, based on data from IDC. Samsung, one of its primary competitors, lagged behind with a 31% share. Nevertheless, while Apple’s trajectory in India is undoubtedly promising, the tech giant has significant ground to cover before its sales in the South Asian country.

Moss Air table-top air purifier and humidifier unveiled as the world’s first Terrarium

The Moss Air tabletop air purifier has been announced. The device is the world’s first Terrarium and uses living moss to purify the air we breathe while also working as a humidifier. The moss plant is tiny but incredibly effective in cleansing the air of toxins, eliminating dust particles, and increasing the air’s oxygen concentration.

Moss Air

Nearly 30% of atmospheric oxygen is claimed to come from the moss and it is called nature’s greatest asset. The moss is a small, non-vascular plant that is found in damp and shady environments. The Moss Air purifier/ humidifier combines nature and technology into a small device that is also visually charming and innovative. Its front features a living moss wall that constantly cleanses the ambient air by trapping toxins, eliminating dust particles, and enriching it with oxygen.

A water chamber is located behind the wall and this feeds the humidifier. The humidifier converts the air into a delicate mist, creating a natural hourglass. An outlet at the top of the device is the exit point for the humidified air. You can either keep the outlet open or close according to your humidification needs.

The Moss Air is unlike most traditional air purifiers that use HEPA filters, activated charcoal blocks, and UV chambers for the purification process. It adopts a moss filter, made up of living plants that can survive without being watered for months. The moss sustains itself, like a terrarium that can stay active for longer periods without human intervention. The excellent oxygen production capability of moss is another advantage of Moss Air. The moss plant also lends you to have a feel of the outdoors inside your living space.

Moss Air

The magnetic ball at the top of the Moss Air can be used as a mechanism for mode switching. You simply roll the magnetic ball across the top of the device to open and close the walls. The Moss Air features the Terranium and Humidifier modes. In the Terrarium mode, the misted breeze keeps the moss alive without any external effort. The moss can survive up to 6 months without being watered.

The Moss Air has a 400ml refillable water chamber. The water in the chamber can last for up to 10 hours while a paper filter helps purify the water before being converted into a vapor. The paper filter can last up to 6 months before being replaced depending on the quality of water placed in the chamber.

The moss panel of the Moss Air can be replaced and swapped with a new moss panel. The gadget can run for up to 8 hours, thanks to its built-in battery. The device can be recharged via its USB-C port. The Moss Air has a starting price of $79 via Indiegogo, with more than $569,000 already raised.

The Global Smartphone Market’s Mass Extinction: 500 Local Smartphone Brands Disappeared in 6 Years

If you’re a regular Gizmochina reader, you might have noticed that we often mention how fierce the competition is in the smartphone market. Yet, many of you probably think we’re mainly talking about the rivalry between tech giants like Samsung, Apple, and Xiaomi, and might not take our words too seriously. However, a study by Counterpoint reveals the intensity of this competition. According to the published report, nearly 500 brands exited the smartphone market from 2017 to 2023. Here are the details…

Local Brands Vanish as Global Giants Dominate Smartphone Market

If you asked any of you to name companies competing in the global smartphone market, you’d probably give us a list of 10-20 brands, mostly consisting of major manufacturers. However, the global smartphone market is a much more fierce battlefield than you might think. Today, around 250 manufacturers worldwide are competing for a share of this market. This number was once much higher. Not so long ago, in 2017, there were over 700 brands vying for consumer attention, and within a six year, 65% of them exited the market.

Of course, there are many reasons for this decline, and some aren’t as bad as you might think. First, let’s consider why there were so many manufacturers at one time. The ever-increasing popularity of smartphones and the steadily growing numbers each quarter prompted many local and global companies to try their luck in this market.

I’m sure that no matter which country you read this from, a few manufacturers who normally did something else but at some point released their own Android phone will come to mind. In fact, these local smartphone brands were once hailed as titans in their own regions. However, they have been the main casualties in this market evolution.

Unfortunately, the rise of global brands and their expansion into more markets, coupled with their ability to produce better phones, has made it harder for local producers. Moreover, the sheer size of these global tech giants has allowed them to offer models with a higher price-to-performance ratio.

As a result, local brands which once dominated their markets have seen their market share decline, or have even exited the market entirely. Additionally, these local manufacturers, already lagging in advertising, have fallen further behind due to the absence of celebrity brand ambassadors and significant marketing events.

In the process we discussed, numerous reasons stood in the way of companies’ success, with the final blow coming from the Covid-19 pandemic. Even though there was an increased global demand for technology products and manufacturers struggled to meet this demand, disruptions in the supply chain and other economic issues impacted smaller producers even more.

As a result, 65% of brands that were producing their own smartphones in 2017 have now exited the market. This decline isn’t solely due to a crisis, especially considering there are still over 250 manufacturers. However, to protect consumers, competition shouldn’t be compromised, and the number of brands should not decrease much further.

End of the TV Box Era but Smart TV Sales Surge: Xiaomi Tops, Samsung Follows

The smart TV market continues to grow. Once a technology that only offered a few low-resolution live channels, smart TVs are now the central entertainment hub in many homes, especially thanks to streaming services. But with so many brands and models to choose from, it can be tough to decide which one is right for you. Here are the details…

India Smart TV Market Analysis for 1H 2023: Xiaomi Tops, Samsung Follows Closely

The popularity of smart televisions is increasing day by day. Especially with decreasing costs, many people these days prefer to buy a genuinely affordable smart TV rather than purchasing a non-smart TV and making it smart using a streaming tv box. A recent report from IDC confirms this trend. According to the report, a total of 4.5 million smart televisions were sold in India in the first half of 2023. This represents an 8% growth compared to the same period last year.

Xiaomi TV box and TV market numbers

The decreasing costs had a positive impact, especially on large screen sales. The market share for the 55-inch screen size segment increased from 9% to 12% year over year. This led to a 35% year-on-year growth in the USD$400+ price segment. Users also paid attention to technical features that distinguished a model, such as storage space, HDR, and Dolby certification when making a choice. So, considering all these factors like price and features, who became the leader in India’s smartphone market?

Of course, the top spot hasn’t changed. Xiaomi continued to lead the Indian smart TV market in the first half of 2023 with a 14% share, up from 11% in 2022. Especially when we look at more affordable models, we see that Xiaomi is the undisputed leader in the HD and FHD segment with a 25% share. Xiaomi holds the top spot, followed by Samsung at 13%.

However, don’t be surprised by this second place. As you know, leading the market with premium products is much more advantageous both in terms of brand perception and profitability. Samsung owns 25% of the 4K market and more than 90% of the 8K market.

LG settled in third place with a 12% market share. TCL took fourth place with 8%, while OnePlus once again proved its success in India by securing a 7% market share. The company’s affordable smart TV series, Y1 and Y1S, played a significant role in this achievement, and it is anticipated that their market share will increase in the future.

Thailand awaits $5 Billion investment boost from Tech Titans

In a bid to rejuvenate its sluggish economy, Thailand is anticipating a substantial investment injection of at least $5 billion from tech giants Tesla, Google, and Microsoft, according to Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin. This announcement follows Srettha’s recent discussions with top executives from these companies during his attendance at the UN General Assembly in New York.

Tesla, renowned for its pioneering electric vehicles (EVs), is mulling over the establishment of an EV manufacturing facility within Thailand’s borders. Meanwhile, both Microsoft and Google are exploring the prospect of setting up data centers in the nation. While Prime Minister Srettha did not specify whether the projected $5 billion was a collective investment or individual commitment from each corporation, the potential inflow of funds holds immense promise for Thailand’s economic revival.

Foreign investment could not come at a more critical time for Thailand, as the country grapples with an economic growth forecast of 2.8% for the year, a figure that has been downgraded due to declining exports. Srettha’s proactive efforts to attract these tech giants reflect Thailand’s determination to retain its status as Asia’s fourth-largest automobile assembly hub. To this end, the country has been extending incentives to EV and battery manufacturers, along with tax reductions for local EV purchasers.

As of now, neither Tesla, Google, nor Microsoft have provided official responses to the investment proposition. Nevertheless, if this multimillion-dollar commitment materializes, it could provide a significant boost to Thailand’s economic fortunes, potentially transforming the nation into a technology and automotive powerhouse.
