South Korea step closer towards commercializing Air Taxis, tests new control system

Earlier this week, South Korea began testing a new system that will be used in controlling urban air mobility vehicles (UAM). These tests will determine whether the new mode of transport will be used for travel between major airports.

South Korea

According to a Reuters report, the new air taxis could potentially cut travel time between major airports by two thirds in the capital city of Seoul. Back in 2020, the country had announced a roadmap that detailed the timeline for the commercialization of urban air travel by 2025. The local transport ministry also expects the service could reduce travel times for distances between 30 to 50 kilometers from an hour on road to just 20 minutes by air.

Transport Minister Noh Hyeong-ouk stated during the control system demonstration that “As UAM is expected to become one of the common means of transportation that citizens use in daily life, it is absolutely imperative that we test and try out UAM services in various environments.” The test had a pilot fly a two seat model built by Germany’s Volocopter at Seoul’s Gimpo Airport to test the controls and coordination. The UAM in qusetion was a VTOL (vertical take off and landings) based and featured helicopter like rotors.

South Korea

Notably, this craft can also be piloted and even operate autonomously. Although, the ministry official stated that a pilot must man the craft to ensure safety of the passenger onboard, which would also aid in general public’s acceptance of the new mode of travel. Currently, local designers have also shown off a model of their own drone aircraft, with a full sized prototype model expected to begin test flights by 2022.

Indian Smartphone Market to see modest single digit annual growth in 2021: IDC

A new report has just revealed that the smartphone market in India is expected to see modest annual growth this year. In 2021, the market is expected to see only single digit rise.

India

According to IDC, the smartphone market in India saw a 12 percent year on year decline in the third quarter of this year. During this quarter, only 48 million units were shipped, despite seeing four consecutive quarters of growth. Although, this decline can be attributed to factors like the ongoing component shortages along with an unusually high third quarter performance last year. But comparing Q3 2021 to Q3 2019, we can see that the market saw a 3 percent growth as various channels also stocked up for the festive season despite the semiconductor shortage.

As per IDC Research Director Navkendar Singh, “The first nine months of the year (Jan-Sep’21) already shipped 120 million units, with 1H21 clocking 42% YoY growth. Due to supply challenges, 4Q21 is expected to see a decline, resulting in annual shipments below 160 million in 2021. The first half of 2022 will remain challenging, with some easing out expected in the latter half of 2022. Vendors/channels will keep an eye on the over stocking situation in case demand stays limited due to the price hikes by the suppliers and vendors.”

India

The report further added that online channels saw a record high 52 percent share in overall smartphone sales, especially during the online promotional offers from companies like Amazon and Flipkart. This continued on till Diwali, which is one of the major festivals in the country. Meanwhile, offline channels declined by 18 percent YoY, with IDC expecting online channels to overtake offline shipments in 2021. As of right now, India is the third largest 5G smartphone market due to a growing dependency on smartphones triggered by the remote work and education has lead to a rise in demand for high quality hardware.

OPPO, OnePlus, Xiaomi, realme, Nokia will likely get Android 12 dynamic themes support

Dynamic theming introduced with Android 12 is easily one of the most significant UI upgrades Android has seen in years. The feature picks colors from the wallpaper and splashes them across the system UI and supported apps. Codenamed ‘monet’, it is currently exclusive to the Pixels and Google is yet to release the source code for it, but that’s set to change quite soon.

Mishaal Rahman on Twitter (via XDA Developers) shared a new code commit in Google’s Material Components library titled “Add supporting manufacturer list of dynamic colors.” It includes a list of OEMs that will support dynamic system themes. The list currently comprises OPPO, realme, OnePlus, vivo, Xiaomi, Motorola, itel, Tecno Mobile, Infinix, HMD Global, Sharp, Sony, TCL, Lenovo, Google, and Roboelectric.

Google had earlier confirmed that the code for monet will be uploaded to AOSP sometime after the release of Android 12. And it has now been confirmed that this will be happening with the release of Android 12L in early 2022.

However, it had been unclear if any manufacturer besides Google would be interested in supporting dynamic themes, considering most have their own Android skins with various design languages. While these OEMs don’t seem to have plans of implementing monet, they do seem to be working on their own implementations entirely.

As such, the color palettes generated from your wallpaper will likely be different from Google’s monet.

A great example of this is the Android 12 beta for the OPPO Find X3 Pro which has its own implementation of dynamic theming and thus creates its own unique palettes. This could also mean that OPPO won’t be making use of the monet engine when it goes live at all, and instead stick to using its own dynamic themes engine.

Oddly, Samsung is missing from the supported manufacturers list even though One UI 4 does come with a dynamic color feature. The reason for this could be Samsung not planning to plug into the Material Components library at all. The downside to this will be that only the supported system apps will be able to benefit from Samsung’s theming solution and third-party apps will be held back.

However, it isn’t unlikely for more OEMs to get added to the list so Samsung still has time.

PUBG New State records over 1 million downloads in just one day

Within just a day of its launch, PUBG: New State has already garnered an impressive 1 million downloads across the globe. Krafton had launched the game yesterday and it appears to have already been a success, despite suffering from various bugs.

PUBG: New State

While many players were unable to login to the account and some were unable to boot the game entirely, the game still managed to cross the million download milestone on the Google Play Store. As of right now, the game is also ranked as number 1 in the Top Charts on the iOS app store. Prior to its release, the game had already garnered a whopping 40 million pre registrations on both Google Play and Apple App Store. So, it arrives as no surprise that the game is already a hit.

For those unaware, the New State title is a part of the popular battle royal franchise but is based on a more modern setting. But while a million people have already got their hands on the game, it has not been very well received. We had previously reported on many people facing issues with unresponsive games, server disconnects, and the infamous 38 percent loading screen. Some users couldn’t even boot the game, with the worst case scenario being a rare chance of the device bricking your smartphone.

PUBG

While this might make gamers stay away from the game, Krafton has acknowledged this issue and has even offered an optional update to address some of these issues. At the moment, this optional update is only available on Android devices and changes the defautl graphics API settings to OpenGL ES for devices that do not support the Vulkan API. Furthermore, the update also fixes game crashes within Vukhan that occurred on certain devices. The company also fixed an issue where optimizing the game right after launching it would cause the game to crash while also offering some overall polishing and stability fixes as well.

Apple patents unique privacy feature, makes iPhone content only visible via special glasses

Apple has just filed a new patent with the USPTO (US Patent and Trademark Office) earlier this week. The patent is for a unique new privacy feature that only reveals the content on iPhone through special glasses.

Apple

According to a PatentlyApple report (Via 9To5Mac), the patent in question describes a system that can display “vision corrected graphical outputs and standard graphical outputs on an electronic device.” However, a notable aspect of this system was the “Privacy Eyewear,” which can block other people around the user from seeing the content being displayed on the iPhone’s screen. Furthermore, the only way to see what’s on the display is through a special glasses.

Notably, the patent arrives amid rumors of the Cupertino based giant working on a mixed reality based headset and even an AR (Augmented Reality) based glasses. In other words, we might see this feature ship with these wearable products, which could even be a major selling point for the brand. Apart from just the new privacy feature, the iPhone maker is also working on on profiles for Face ID. The patent talks about an additional system that will be capable of differentiating between unique details on the user’s face. This includes aspects like hairstyles, beard, mustache, glasses, sunglasses, and more.

Apple AR Glasses

This feature could even make its way to the company’s Mac series of PCs as Touch ID lets users quickly switch accounts simply by scanning their fingerprints. So, it might be another seamless biometric verification system offered to the users. Although, this is still just a patent at the moment, so take this report with a pinch of salt for now.

vivo Y76 5G gets certified by NCC hinting at an imminent launch, complete design revealed

vivo is currently working on adding a new budget phone to the Y series called vivo Y76 5G. It carries model number V2124 and has been certified across many certification websites including NBTC, SIRIM, IMDA & NCC, pointing towards an imminent release.

But perhaps the best part is that the NCC certification (via Abhishek Yadav) also includes live images of the phone, revealing its complete design, which doesn’t appear to be any different from the vivo Y76s 5G released last month.

The listing doesn’t delve into the features of the device other than mentioning it supports 5G and NFC. Still, parallels can be drawn between it and the Y76s from last month, and it’s likely that both will sport a pretty similar, if not identical, feature set.

The vivo Y76s 5G features a 6.58-inch Full HD+ LCD screen with a 180Hz touch sampling rate. It is equipped with the MediaTek Dimensity 810 chip and packs a 50MP + 2MP dual-camera setup on the rear. Upfront, you get an 8MP selfie snapper. All of that is powered by a 4,100mAh battery with support for 44W fast charging.

vivo Y76 5G cert

There’s a huge likelihood of the vivo Y76 5G being the same as the vivo Y76s 5G, with no difference feature-wise whatsoever. The vivo Y76s 5G, after all, has only been launched in China and was awaiting a global release. The only oddity here is the omission of the ‘s’ from the name which almost makes the device sound less premium than its Chinese variant.

Xiaomi executive explains why MediaTek phones get updated slower than Qualcomm

Android 12 had hit stable last month and OEMs are racing to run the update buglessly on their smartphone offerings. But there have been concerns raised about devices powered by MediaTek chips getting updated to the Android version slower than their Snapdragon counterparts. This has historically always been the case and will likely continue to do so.

While OEMs are yet to arrive at a solution for this shortcoming, Xiaomi‘s Li Ming has now provided an explanation for it.

li ling da mediatek android 12 update (1)

Li Ming says that Google typically gives Qualcomm and MediaTek the necessary code in advance to give them a headstart in prep for upcoming Android updates. This does save a considerable amount of time as opposed to making the code available after an Android stable release.

However, this is where the differences between the two chip giants emerge. Qualcomm seemingly has a larger team which enables it to work in parallel and deliver all packages required for an update process at once. MediaTek, on the other hand, delivers them in batches which is slower and results in some MTK platform phones getting placed in the second or third batch of updates.

Li Ming added by saying that upgrades on a batch basis are “also an inevitable choice.” While the main reason for going for them is lack of manpower, batch upgrades also save trouble in case of any issues. This is because if any problem pops up in the code, it can be isolated to a certain batch and fixed accordingly without affecting a vast number of devices.

MediaTek is now the largest Smartphone SoC maker: CEO

While MediaTek and Qualcomm have been known rivals in the smartphone chipset market for many years now, the latter had always been the leader in the segment. But now, MediaTek has finally become the largest smartphone SoC maker this year.

mediatek

According to the Taiwanese chip maker’s CEO Rick Tsai, “We are now the largest smartphone SoC maker globally. We continue to gain share across all regions of the world.” The senior official made that statement in a recent investor conference in Taiwan. The company appears to have seen great growth, which was enabled it to expand outside of its previous dependence on Chinese customers. The CEO added that the brand’s Android smartphone market share in North America alone will cross 25 percent this year.

For those unaware, MediaTek sells chips to almost every smartphone OEM across the globe, with its Dimensity lineup of 5G processors even being offered to the flagship segment as well. The growth of the company can be attributed to its strong performance in the 5G segment that allowed it to become the market leader, rather than being a “fast follower in the phone business,” as per EETimesAsia.

Mediatek logo

In the third quarter of 2021, the smartphone SoC’s accounted for 56 percent of its revenue. This was a sizeable increase of 72 percent from the same period last year, with the robust rise being attributed to the growth of 5Gand its market share gains. Tsai also believes that MediaTek can further grow in the 5G segment through its proprietary design architecture, low power design expertise, and 4nm process technology from TSMC.
