Apple is now selling refurbished 24-inch iMac powered by M1 chipset in China

The 24-inch iMac was launched by Apple earlier this year in April. Just months after the device is available for purchase, the tech giant officially started selling the refurbished models of the same in the UK in August.

Now, just a month after the refurbished 24-inch iMac models were up for sale in the United Kingdom, Apple has started selling the same in China. They are being sold in different memory configurations and multiple color options in the Chinese market on its website.

The new iMac

The 8GB RAM and 256GB solid state drive (SSD) model is priced at 8,499 yuan (~$1,316) while the 8GB RAM with 512GB SSD is available at 9,769 yuan (~$1,512). The product is being offered in four color options — Silver, Green, Blue, and Pink.

It’s noteworthy that the stock for the refurbished models varies based on what people have sent in for repair or replacement. Those who are looking to purchase a refurbished version of a particular model need to keep a close eye on the store for its availability.

As the name itself indicates, the new 24-inch iMac features a 24-inch 4.5K Retina Display that comes with support for 1 billion colors. It has True Tone technology which is used to automatically adjust the color temperature based on the environment.

Underneath, the device is powered by Apple Silicon‘s M1 chipset and comes in two versions — one with an 8-core CPU and a 7-core GPU and another with an 8-core CPU and 8-core GPU. The base model packs 8GB of RAM and 256GB of SSD storage which can be expanded up to 16GB of RAM and 2TB of SSD storage.

Apple M1 chipset is the first from the technology giant for its Mac devices under Apple Silicon. The company is now working on an upgraded chipset, which is likely to be called M1X and there are already reports about Mac devices powered by the same.

The upcoming 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models are expected to come powered by the yet unannounced Apple M1X chipset, and so is the new Mac Mini. We expect the launch of newer Mac devices to take place by the end of this year.

WhatsApp fined €225 million for breaching EU data privacy rules

WhatsApp, the instant messaging platform owned by Facebook, has been fined 225 million euros (approximately $267 million) by a data watchdog in Ireland for breaking the EU data privacy rules. This makes it the largest penalty handed out by the Irish data regulatory over General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) violation and the second-largest in EU.

Data Protection Commission of Ireland says that the Facebook-owned WhatsApp failed to tell its European Union citizens about what the company does with the data collection of the user, including how the details are collected and users, as well as how WhatsApp shares the user data with Facebook.

WhatsApp

The Irish authority had originally asked WhatsApp for a €50 million fine for breaking GDPR, but other data protection agencies pushing for a stiffer penalty. Now, the fine levied is more than four times the originally proposed.

In its order, the commission asked WhatsApp to tweak its privacy policies and how it communicates with users in order to make the platform compliant with Europe’s privacy law. This means that the messaging service may need to expand its privacy policy.

WhatsApp has said that the company will be filing an appeal over this verdict. The company’s spokesperson added, “WhatsApp is committed to providing a secure and private service. We have worked to ensure the information we provide is transparent and comprehensive and will continue to do so. We disagree with the decision today regarding the transparency we provided to people in 2018 and the penalties are entirely disproportionate.”

The company has revealed on its website that it shares information like phone numbers, transaction data, business interactions, mobile device information, IP addresses, and other information with Facebook. The firm emphasizes that it does not share personal conversations, location data, or call logs.

Xiaomi controls 50% of China’s OLED TV market, sold over 10K OLED TVs in 15 days

Xiaomi has officially announced that it has sold over 10,000 OLED smart TVs in just 15 days, setting a new record in the OLED TV industry. The company also disclosed that it presently controls about 50% of China’s OLED TV market in the wake of a low penetration rate for OLED TVs in China.

The recent sales record is connected to the Mi OLED TV 6 and the Mi Masters TV 77 that were announced not too long ago. The Mi TV 6 OLED comes with a cheaper 5699 yuan (~$883) starting price tag for the 55-inch. The Mi TV Masters 77 OLED isn’t that cheap, packing a hefty price tag of 19,999 yuan (). The design and features seem to justify the price tag as the device packs a slim form factor said to be thinner than a smartphone.

Xiaomi has often dominated the smart TV market in China for the past months. A recent report by market research firm Avi Cloud (AVC) shows that Xiaomi has topped that smart TV market ranking for 10 consecutive quarters.

The growth recorded by the Chinese tech giant in the sector is driven by a consistent outflow of quality products and that continued in to date. The company recently launched the Mi TV 5X and it is already performing excellently in the market especially in India where it has been launched.

New Apple Watch Series 7 details confirm bigger displays, new Watch SE planned for 2022

Apple is expected to announce new smartwatches this year and there is a lot to be excited about. There have been rumors that the new Apple Watches will sport bigger screens, and a reputable source has now confirmed it is true along with more details. There is also new info about future models.

A Bloomberg report has revealed that the Apple Watch Series 7 will be available in two sizes – 41mm and 45 mm. The latter will have a screen size of about 1.9 inches, an increase from the 1.78 inches of the 44mm Apple Watch Series 6. The resolution has also increased to 396 x 484, resulting in a 16% increase in pixels. Unfortunately, the screen details of the 41mm version were not revealed.

Apple will take advantage of the new screen size by showing more information on the screen. It has also been stated that the Apple Watch Series 7 will be getting new watch faces that make the best use of this new screen size. One of the new Watch Faces is called  Modular Max, and apart from showing the time, it will also show a small complication such as the day of the week, temperature, or a shortcut to an app, alongside a larger complication.

Other new Watch Faces mentioned are Continuum – which will change based on the flow of time and the current hour; Atlas and World Timer – which shows all the 24 time zones; and new Nike and Hermes faces.

The display of the new Apple Watches is said to use a new lamination technique that brings the display closer to the protective glass. Unfortunately, it has led to production issues that may result in the smartwatches getting delayed or limited supply at launch.

Bloomberg also reported that Apple is planning to announce a successor to the Apple Watch SE next year as well as a rugged model targeted at extreme sports users. The flagship watch will also get a refresh with a new feature being a body temperature sensor. Other reported features coming to the Apple Watch line in the future are a non-invasive blood sugar monitor and a blood pressure monitor.

Design

If you prefer to have the most modern and beautiful design, choose the Redmi Note 10 5G by Xiaomi. It is the only one that features a punch-hole display instead of an ugly waterdrop notch. Further, it is a thinner and lighter phone than those two Samsung budget phones. It also features a side-mounted fingerprint reader and the Gorilla Glass 3 protection for the front glass. All the devices come with a polycarbonate body instead of premium materials, and the Samsung Galaxy M21 2021 Edition is the most compact due to its smaller display.

Display

If you desire a more premium display, choose the Samsung Galaxy M21 2021 Edition. It is the only one sporting an AMOLED display that shows more brilliant colors and deeper blacks. Unfortunately, it does not have a high refresh rate, but the image quality is more impressive if compared to its two rivals. Redmi Note 10 5G and Samsung Galaxy A22 5G have 90 Hz refresh rates, but they come with LCD panels. The Redmi Note 10 5G is better than Galaxy A22 5G in terms of image quality, but the Galaxy A22 5G has a wider display.

Hardware/Software

The MediaTek Dimensity 700 chipset found on the Samsung Galaxy A22 5G and the Redmi Note 10 5G is a better SoC than the Samsung Exynos 9611 found on the Samsung Galaxy M21 2021 Edition. The winner of the hardware comparison is the Redmi Note 10 5G: both this handset and the Galaxy A22 5G feature up to 8 GB of RAM, but the Redmi Note 10 5G adds up to 256 GB of faster UFS 2.2 internal storage. Unfortunately, the Samsung Galaxy M21 2021 Edition has a processor built with a worse production process and without 5G support.

Camera

The most interesting camera department belongs to the Samsung Galaxy M21 2021 Edition. The important difference is not the main camera (a 48 MP sensor in each case), but the secondary sensors. The Samsung Galaxy M21 2021 Edition has a better 8 MP ultrawide camera and even a better 5 MP depth sensor than the other devices in this comparison. It is even equipped with a way better 20 MP front camera (instead of the low-end 8 MP selfie snapper of Redmi Note 10 5G and Samsung Galaxy A22 5G).

Battery

The Samsung Galaxy M21 2021 Edition packs a bigger battery and it is able to provide a longer battery life thanks to a capacity of 6000 mAh.

Samsung Galaxy A22 5G vs Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 5G vs Samsung Galaxy M21 2021 Edition: Price

Samsung Galaxy A22 5G is priced at Rs. 19,349 / $265 in India, Redmi Note 10 5G is expected to hit the Indian market soon with an Rs. 14,590 / $200 starting price and Samsung Galaxy M21 2021 Edition is priced at Rs. 12,999 / $178. If we exclude 5G and the processor, the Samsung Galaxy M21 2021 Edition is the best device of this comparison despite its very affordable price.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 telephoto lens uses the Hi-1337 sensor from SK Hynix

Samsung‘s latest foldable phone, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 has been graded as the most durable foldable phone around. That is because the Korean tech giant seems to have focused on that aspect. The Z Fold 3 doesn’t have anything spectacular in the camera segment as its setup is hardly different from the Galaxy Z Fold 2. The two models feature a 12MP wide-angle camera with OIS, a 12MP ultrawide camera, and a 12MP telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom and OIS.

However, one aspect where the Z Fold 3 differs from its predecessor is in the aspect of the brand of the telephoto camera. A recent report emanating from South Korea ha revealed that the Z Fold 3’s telephoto lens was manufactured by Korean Nand manufacturer SK Hynix. The sensor in question is the Hi-1337 sensor. SK Hynix had announced the sensor in the early part of last year packing a 13MP resolution, 1µm pixels, and 2x optical zoom. One spectacular feature of the sensor is its flexibility, as it can be deployed as a selfie camera and a wide-angle camera.

What makes this news surprising is that SK Hynix is well-known as a NAND manufacturer and its camera sensor business occupy just 2% of the market. The market is dominated by Sony with a 40% market share and Samsung with a 22% market share. But Samsung chose to use a sensor by SK Hynix on its most expensive phone. Surprising!

Obviously, the focus of the Korean tech giant is on the folding mechanism and not on the camera aspect. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 even features a 4MP Under Display selfie camera that is anything but inspiring.

Xiaomi EV Company Limited is born, marking the brand’s entry into the EV business

It is no longer news that Xiaomi is planning to enter the smart electric vehicle (EV) industry. But if you think that is a project for the future, you may want to have a rethink. The Chinese tech giant has officially announced the birth of the Xiaomi EV Company Limited, the vehicle through which it hopes to achieve the dream of manufacturing electric vehicles.Xiaomi logo

The announcement follows the completion of the registration of the new company with  Lei Jun, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of Xiaomi, as the legal representative. The new company has a registered capital of RMB 10 billion (around $1.5 billion).

Towards the end of March 2021, Xioami’s founder Lei Jun first announced during a speech the company’s EV business initiative, hinting that the Chinese brand was planning to invest an estimated $10 billion in total in EV business over the course of the next 10 years, with an initial investment of RMB 10 billion (~$1.5 billion. Lei Jun will lead the team himself and the company has already recruited over 300 new employees who are experts in the sector.

The news comes not too long after the company announced the acquisition of an autonomous driving technology company Deepmotion Tech. However, a clear roadmap of how the new EV business will run is not yet gotten. We can’t say if the company is going to manufacture complete electric vehicles or would focus on manufacturing components (hardware and software) for EVs. One thing is for sure though, the company will develop self-driving technology. There is no doubt that Xiaomi is bringing some vigor to the market.

New Snapdragon Wear 5100 details reveal CPU performance may not get a big upgrade

The Snapdragon Wear 4100 and Snapdragon Wear 4100+ are Qualcomm’s top chipsets for smartwatches that are available now. The chips, which have appeared in just a few watches, are expected to get a successor soon. New details have revealed that the new processor, expected to be called the Snapdragon Wear 5100 (SW5100), may not get a big upgrade in terms of performance, no thanks to its CPU.

Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear Featured

The guys at Winfuture did some digging and found out that the current version of the SW5100 that Qualcomm is testing has four Cortex-A53 cores just like its predecessors and not Cortex-A73 cores. However, the clockspeed is unknown. The source also states that the chipset is being tested with different configurations that includes LPDDR4X RAM, which is definitely an upgrade over the LPDDR3 RAM of the Snapdragon 4100 series; 1GB or 2GB of RAM; and 8GB or 16GB of eMMC-flash storage. There are also some configurations that have two cameras ( a 5MP sensor and a 16MP sensor).

Just like the Snapdragon Wear 4100 series, Winfuture reports that the Snapdragon Wear 5100 may also have a co-processor that consumes significantly less power and handles tasks such as sleep tracking and heart rate monitoring.

The Snapdragon Wear 5100 will be manufactured by both Samsung and China’s SMIC according to details gotten from the supply samples. It is believed that Qualcomm may be targeting Chinese manufacturers with these new chip.

There is no news yet on when the processor will be announced but it appears there is still a bit of waiting to do. Qualcomm may also want to delay the release so that more manufacturers can pick up the Snapdragon Wear 4100 series which powers just a few smartwatches.

Ulefone Power Armor 13 battery drain test stunned everyone [Video]

If you remember, recently Ulefone bombarded the smartphone market with its Ulefone Power Armor 13 featuring a monstrous 13200mAh battery. It goes without saying that you have to try hard to get the battery down in this phone. Would like to see it in reality? Ulefone just released a battery drain test video with, of course, the Power Armor 13 as the protagonist flexing its battery power.

Must See: Ulefone Power Armor 13 Performance Testing & Teardown [Videos]

Usually, rugged phones come with compromises in terms of battery life. But Ulefone changed it altogether and indeed a much welcome addition. As you can see from the video, it consumed only 2% battery even after online streaming music for as long as 1 hour, 2% battery drain after online video streaming for 1 hour, and just about 6% battery drain for 1-hour FHD video recording.

Wait, not over… To much astonishment, a mere 5% of the battery got depleted after continuous gameplay for an hour! Last but not the least, just 3% battery consumption for 30-minute PTT calling. After all these heavy-duty drills, the device had an 18% total battery. So this is the corroboration that with Power Armor 13 you can easily have an All-Day battery even with intense usages.

We need not elaborate on the battery prowess of the Power Armor 13. It’s awesome! If interested, you may go through the Ulefone Official Website to know more about the device.

The data shows that BOE’s share in 2020 reached 22.9%, an increase of 2.2% from 2019. The LCD market used to be LG Display’s stronghold but BOE supposed the Korean company surpassing LG Display, which was previously ranked first.BOE

LG Display’s share fell to 17.2% which is a 6.7% reduction from the 23.9% market share recorded in 2019. The third spot is occupied by Taiwanese display maker AU Optronics with 11.9%. Cumulatively, the top 3 large LCD makers control 52% of the market in the period under review.

Apart form BOE technology, another Chinese company in the top 5 ranking is TCL’s China Star Optoelectronics which saw a 2.5% increase in its shipment to emerged as the fifth largest large LCD manufacturer with an 8.8 % share of the market. The Chinese company edged out Samsung from the 5th spot which it occupied in 2019. What Samsung loses in the LCD market, it will surely gain in OLED panel shipments as it is ranked as the leading manufacturer of OLED panels.

It is worth mentioning that, according to data from the research firm CINNO Research, in the first half of 2021, global LCD TV panel shipments reached 130 million units, an increase of 2.5% year-on-year. That means the LCD market will once again see a record shipment this year and Chinese manufacturers will likely take the larger share of the market.

Corning: Liquid Lens has applications in medical, industrial and AR fields

Earlier this year, we had reported on LG Innotek and Corning working on Liquid Lens technology that could seemingly benefit the smartphone photography. Now, an from the latter firm had touted the various benefits of this new lens technology.

LG

In an interview with TheElec, Frederic Laune, business manager at Corning Varioptic Lenses stated that liquid lens can help with changing local lengths in cameras. The manager also added that the company is looking to expand the applications of this technology in various other industries like the medical and industrial fields. For those unaware, liquid lens is basically filled with liquid materials inside the physical lens that can change the curvature of the lens by using currents and voltages to control the focal length of the camera.

Laune stated that liquid lens can be used to solve the focal length changing issue, which is when the distance between the camera and subject is constantly changing. He said that the new lens technology can basically focus on a particular object even if there were varying distances in between. Conventional lens technology usually had the lens being placed close to the image sensor or further away from it to maintain the focus on the object. However, these mechanical solutions are vulnerable to external shock and increase the power consumption of devices while being slow.

Corning

So, liquid lens technology aims to be a power efficient alternative, which is more effective and quicker as well. Furthermore, this is the reason why industrial cameras rarely use these lens solutions, as per the Manager. Liquid lens is also durable against shakes external shocks, making it practical in various fields like augmented reality.
