Google has quietly stopped selling Pixel Buds true wireless earphones

A few months ago, Google launched its second true wireless earphones in the market — Pixel Buds A which carries a starting price of $99.99. Google was expected to launch a premium offering, a successor to the Pixel Buds 2 but instead, the company announced an affordable variant in the form of Pixel Buds A.

Now, the technology giant has stopped selling the original Pixel Buds, its first true wireless earphones in the market. The company is yet to confirm the discontinuation through an official statement but the product has disappeared from the company’s online store in the United States, confirming the development.

And not only Google’s online store, but the Pixel Buds are also not available for purchase through other stores like Best Buy. However, there’s a refurbished version of the headset available for purchase but it’s carrying a hefty price tag.

It will be interesting to see what Google has planned for its upcoming true wireless earphones to compete against the likes of Apple AirPods 3 and Samsung Galaxy Buds 2. We expect the search engine giant to launch a successor to the Pixel Buds pretty soon with some premium features like Active Noise Cancellation.

The Google Pixel Buds A comes in two color options — Clearly White and Dark Olive. It comes with features like Adaptive Sound and can automatically adjust the volume to fit your surroundings. There are touch-based controls for answering calls and control playback by simply tapping on the buds. The earbuds are rated IPX4, so you don’t have to worry about rain or sweat. The battery life is around 5 hours (2.5 hours for calls) and goes up to 24 hours with the charging case.

It will be equipped with a screen that offers 1440 x 3200 pixels resolution, Snapdragon 888 Plus, 12 GB RAM + 4 GB virtual RAM, and 256 GB storage, OriginOS 1.0 based Android 11 OS. Some of these specs are mentioned on the leaked screenshot shared by the leaker.

iQOO 8 key specs

Original story follows…

An iQOO official released a teaser video to hint that the company will be holding an unveiling event in China on Aug. 4. It also hinted that it may announce the iQOO 8 series on the said date. A new Weibo post by reliable tipster Digital Chat Station reveals what to expect from the iQOO 8 lineup.

The tipster claimed that the iQOO 8 series could be powered by the Snapdragon 888 Plus chipset. As it is known, the SD888+ that offers up to 3GHz processing speeds is an overclocked version of the Snapdragon 888 that max out at 2.84GHz. It remains to be seen whether the company manages to launch the iQOO 8 is the world’s first phone powered by the Snapdragon 888 Plus chip.

He added that as compared to the previous generation, the iQOO 8 series will offer users a larger display and better fast charging capabilities. Unfortunately, he did not share specific information on the innards of the iQOO 8.

Recently, a couple of new Vivo phones such as V2130A, V2133A, and V2141A were spotted in the database of the CMIIT authority. Probably, these models may belong to the upcoming iQOO 8 series and the Vivo X70 lineup. Hopefully, newer reports will confirm the identities of these models in the coming days.

iQOO 8 is expected to replace the Snapdragon 888 powered iQOO 7 that debuted at the beginning of this year. It came with specs like a 6.62-inch AMOLED FHD+ 120Hz display, up to 12 GB of LPDDR5 RAM, up to 256 GB of UFS 3.1 storage, a 4,000mAh battery with 120W fast charging support, a 16-megapixel front camera, and a 48-megapixel triple camera unit.

OPPO to announce new development in mobile charging technology on July 22

Smartphone manufacturers have been focusing on the fast charging technology for their premium devices for the past few years and it seems that the development in this direction isn’t going to stop anytime soon.

OPPO has been one of the leading players when it comes to fast-charging technology and the company has today announced that it has another major development in mobile charging technology. The Chinese company has confirmed through a poster that details about the same will be revealed on 22nd July.

OPPO New Mobile Charging Technology Launch 22nd July

In the poster shared by OPPO on Weibo, it reads: “From 22.5W to 125W, can mobile phone charging only get faster and faster?” It also adds that the company will talk about something other than “fast.”

Last year, OPPO had unveiled its 125W Super Flash Charging Technology that can charge a 4,000mAh battery-powered smartphone up to 41 percent within five minutes and can fully charge the device in 20 minutes.

The technology is built on the existing 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 charging protocol. The VOOC charging protocol has always focused on increasing the current (instead of the voltage) to increase the total wattage. It is also compatible with the previous versions like SuperVOOC and VOOC protocols.

While the technology was announced last year, the company is yet to incorporate this fast charging solution in its smartphones and the upcoming announcement could be related to that. Recently, ‘Digital Chat Station’ had revealed that the OPPO 125W Super Fast Charging Technology is undergoing reliability and aging tests at the Huizhou factory.

Are we finally getting the 125W fast charging support in a commercial smartphone? To know for sure, we will have to wait for the official event on 22nd July which is just a few days away. So, stay tuned!

OPPO Watch 2 launch date confirmed for China

Back in May, OPPO teased a smartwatch during the Reno6 launch event in China. Several details of the OPPO Watch 2 had also appeared on Weibo around the same time. Today, the company released a poster to reveal that the OPPO Watch 2 will be announced at 3 PM (local time) on July 27 in China.

The launch poster does not reveal anything about the specifications and features of the Watch 2. In May, XDA Developers had revealed that model numbers such as OW20W3 and OW20W1 belong to the 46mm edition of the Watch 2. It also mentioned that the 46mm variant will arrive in three colors like Dust Gray, Mine Shaft, and Steel Blue.

It further revealed that the model number OP20W2 model number belongs to the smaller 42mm variant. This model is expected to arrive in colors like Mine Shaft, Gold Sand, Water Leaf, and Matisse.

OPPO Watch 2 launch date

The OPPO Watch from last year was the company’s first device in the smartwatch market. It was powered by the Snapdragon Wear 3100 chip, and it ran on Wear OS in global markets. In China, it came with ColorOS.

As far as the Watch 2 is concerned, it is expected to arrive with the newer Snapdragon Wear 4100 SoC and an Apollo 4s secondary chip.  While its global version is likely to run on Wear OS, its Chinese edition could be running on an OS based on Android 8.1. The Watch 2 may offer 16 GB of native storage, which is twice more than its predecessor model.

The Watch 2 is likely to sport a square-shaped dial like its predecessor. It is expected to offer features like new watch faces, a stress detection function, a new OPPO Relax app, and LTE support through e-SIM. The company is also said to be working on a smartwatch called the OPPO Watch Free, but nothing much is known about it.

iPhone SE 2022 with Apple A14 Bionic may arrive in first half of next year

Apple is expected to unleash the iPhone 13 series in September this year. Since the launch is not too far away, the rumor mill is actively leaking information on the next-generation iPhones. Fresh information that has emerged on DigiTimes does not talk about the iPhone 13 lineup, but the next generation iPhone SE arriving next year. Recently, well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed that the iPhone SE will be equipped with an updated processor. The new report also supports this claim and mentions that it may launch in the first half of 2022.

The new report states that the Cupertino-based firm is now hiring chip probing specialists through its partner Xintec. While Xintec is known as a subsidiary of TSMC, it has been supplying components to Apple since the time it launched the first iPhone SE back in 2016.

The iPhone SE 2022 (or the iPhone SE 3) is expected to feature an Apple A14 Bionic processor that fueled the iPhone 12 series last year. The company is expected to advertise as the most affordable 5G-ready iPhone.

Probably, there will not be any major design on the third-generation iPhone SE. Hence, it may continue to sport a 4.7-inch display with thick bezels and the good old Touch ID sensor. The other details of the device are under wraps.

The iPhone SE 2020 has a 4.7-inch IPS LCD screen that offers 750 x 1334 pixels, an Apple A13 Bionic chip, 3 GB of RAM, up to 256 GB of storage, and a 1,821mAh battery. Smartphone holders

Many users like using their mapping applications on their smartphones. In such cases, Smartphone holders are available in the market that lets us dock our phones onto the handlebar of our bikes or the dash of our cars. These holders can wirelessly charge your smartphone with a peak power of up to 15W. You could either get the sleek magnetic holder or the clamped holder for a better grip. Sony clarifies the Xperia 1 III will receive software updates for two years

There have been reports that Sony’s Xperia 1 III flagship will receive only one OS update. The news has spread like wildfire and Sony has received backlash. It turns out that isn’t the case and the Japanese manufacturer has clarified the matter.

Sony Xperia 1 III Frosted Black Featured 01

In a statement to GSMArena, Sony said the info about the Xperia 1 III receiving only one Android OS upgrade and two years of security patch is incorrect. It clarified that the flagship will be supported for two years and it plans to update the OS more than once during the period.

We can deduce from Sony’s statement that the Xperia 1 III will receive Android 12 and Android 13. However, the chance for an Android 14 update is slim as software support for the device will likely have ended by the time the new OS update arrives.

Sony’s statement reaffirms that its software support hasn’t improved especially for its flagships considering competitors such as Samsung and OnePlus will be offering three OS upgrades for their own flagships. Samsung will even offer four years of security updates for several of its phones.

The Xperia 1 III costs $1299 and will go on sale in August since it was announced back in April. It has a 6.5-inch 4K HDR OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. It has a Snapdragon 888 processor under its hood along with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of expandable storage.

Sony Xperia 1 III Camera Featured

Cameras are one of the highlights of the phone. The main rear camera is a 12MP f/2.2 sensor and it brings along a 12MP ultrawide angle camera and a 12MP variable telephoto camera. There is also an iTOF 3D camera for accurate and fast autofocus. There are tons of camera features built into the camera app and even a dedicated shutter button on the side. The front-facing camera is an 8MP sensor.

Audio is another strong suit of the phone. It has an audio jack, front-facing stereo speakers with 360° Reality Audio, and Spatial Sound. Sony will ship orders with a free pair of its WF-1000XM3 wireless noise-canceling earbuds.

There is a 4500mAh battery inside the phone and it supports fast charging. Users will be able to charge the battery up to 50% in 30 minutes. There is also wireless charging and reverse wireless charging. One neat feature the phone has is that when playing games and you have your charging cable plugged in, rather than charge the battery and cause the device to heat up, the system draws power from the adapter.

Other features are an IPX5/IPX8 water-resistant rating, IP6X dustproof rating, dual SIM hybrid, Gorilla Glass Victus on the front, and Gorilla Glass 6 on the rear, NFC, Bluetooth 5.2, and Wi-Fi 6.

Samsung patent reveals next-gen Gesture Controls for Foldable Smartphones

Samsung has been working hard to make foldable smartphones mainstream by making them more affordable as the upcoming devices are expected to be priced lower than their predecessors. Apart from pricing, the features and functionalities also play a major role in making smartphones popular and Samsung has few tricks up its sleeves.

Samsung Patent for Foldable Smartphones

Earlier this month, the South Korean giant’s patent (via Patently Apple) revealed that Samsung could be working on a new foldable smartphone concept that uses special programmable function buttons and gestures. The illustrations filed along with the patent hints at the possible positioning of the button as well as the expansion of the feature to the flip-style phones.

While it’s not explicitly mentioned, the button is expected to be physical but they are implied by way of user gesture controls. Explaining this, Samsung says: “In one embodiment, the gesture input signal may be related to finger movements (for example, finger movement patterns). For example, a swipe gesture input signal may be generated through a swipe gesture.”

In another example, Samsung notes that the swipe gesture may be finger movements in the unfolded state of the electronic device involving touching a specific section of the first side surface 200c, moving in the positive y-axis direction or negative y-axis direction, and releasing. The swipe gesture enables key input signals to be sequentially generated through the first edge keys arranged on the first side surface 200c, and these key input signals may be recognized as a swipe gesture input signal.

Tencent buys British game developer Sumo in a deal worth $1.3 billion

Chinese internet giant Tencent has snapped up Sheffield-based UK games developer Sumo. Tencent is pursuing an expansionist drive that has already put it as the second-largest video game group in terms of revenue just behind Sony. The deal announced by Tencent is valued at $1.27 billion and will continue to push the Chinese company to the summit of global video games production and sales.Tencent Logo

Tencent recently came under scrutiny in China after it sought to merge two video streaming sites DouYu and Huya. The Chinese market regulator blocked the move on possible breach of the country’s antitrust laws. Tencent has also had a very successful run with a number of its video games, some of which have high-profile mobile versions, like Call of Duty.

The company has several chart-topping video games that continue to drive the growth of its portfolio. The purchase is bound to boost Tencent’s global outlook, as it would add several of Sumo’s highly successful video games to its repertoire. Sumo has 14 studios spread across five countries, where it develops its video games.

Tencent holds an 8.75% stake in Sumo, and it is the second-largest shareholder of the company. Sumo had continued on a rising trajectory since 2017 when it was listed on the London Stock Exchange. The gaming provider’s shareholders will enjoy some impressive buyback of their shares in the deal with Tencent. Each share of Sumo has now appreciated 43% from its previous valuation, and a premium of $5.13 per share will be paid to shareholders of Sumo.

The move by Tencent is the second major deal involving a UK company after Electronics Arts (EA) snapped Codemaster within the past year. There has not been any report of a counteroffer at this time; hence it is unlikely that the deal would crumble. However, there could be some level of uncertainty in the regulatory regime of the company, due to the risks and uncertainties in the Chinese regulatory regime.

Here is a better look at the case of the Nothing ear (1) earbuds

The Nothing ear (1) earbuds will launch later this month as the first product from Carl Pei’s new startup. The pair of wireless earbuds will come with a transparent design, one we have not seen in this product space before. Ahead of its release, a new render that shows the case has surfaced online.

The image is from StockX, an online marketplace that started with selling sneakers. Nothing has partnered with the store to sell 100 units via the platform’s DropX auction. As of the time of writing, the highest bid is €437 which is more than four times the €99 price it will sell for when it launches on July 27.

Nothing ear (1) case

The case of the Nothing ear (1) earbuds is shaped like a square with rounded corners. The top appears to be completely see-through while the bottom has some bit of white plastic that covers the internals including the battery. The case has a round button which is most likely for pairing and right beside it is a USB-C port. The magnets that are built into the case are also visible. We can’t say if the case will support wireless charging as the coil may be buried underneath the opaque white plastic.

While the design of the Nothing Ear (1) will receive mixed reviews, we are pretty sure it will get people talking.

It has been confirmed that the earbuds will have active noise cancellation (ANC) and each one will have three high-definition microphones.
