Tencent had announced that it planned to merge Huya and DouYu, China’s two largest online streaming platforms, for the first time last year. Although, this major merger would apparently require the company to accept certain concessions.
According to a Reutersreport, the Chinese tech and social media giant has plans to merge the two streaming platforms, which account for about 80 percent of the entire market that is worth more than 3 billion US Dollars and still growing fast. However, due to the size of the merger, local regulators in China have shown concern as the move would also further grow the dominance of Tencent in the market.
Thus, to have the deal be approved by the authorities, the company is willing to accept certain conditions that it might be subjected to, as per sources close to the matter. Furthermore, the SAMR (or China’s State Administration of Market Regulation) had stated back in December that it was reviewing this merger deal. Unfortunately, Tencent, Huya, DouYu, and even SAMR have yet to comment on this matter or respond to any requests for comment.
The move from the regulators is also a part of the Chinese government’s anti monopoly crackdown on local tech giants. As per one source, the anti trust review against Tencent has been an “elongated process,” although, nothing has been confirmed at the moment. For those unaware, Huya and DouYu are the the first and second most popular online streaming platforms in China. Facebook recently shared a blog post where it spoke on a number of issues. One of the issues discussed is that of privacy and security. The social media giant disclosed that between October and December 2020, it deleted up to 1.3 billion catfish accounts from the social network platform.
Although the proliferation of fake accounts is a major challenge many users encounter as they are more likely to meet a fake account on Facebook than on other social platforms. The major aim of creating fake accounts is to defraud other unsuspecting users. Fake accounts are also created to spread misinformation and such. The company disclosed that it has over 35,000 people working round the clock towards tackling misinformation on its platform. To this end, Facebook says it had also pulled down more than 12 million pieces of content about COVID-19 and vaccines that global health experts flagged as misinformation.
Before social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and others decided to act, there was a rise in false information, conspiracy theories about the coronavirus vaccines, and several false claims. The tactical decision to weed such misinformation was greatly helpful in ensuring people were able to receive the right information about preventing the spread of the virus and also about the rollout of the vaccines.
The disclosure by Facebook of data on misinformation is coming in the wake of a planned inspection by the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce. The committee is investigating how technology platforms including Facebook are tackling misinformation.

Samsung, apart from being one of the first device makers to launch a foldable smartphone, also has the most number of foldable smartphones in the market. The company has been trying to improve the design with each iteration and now the South Korean giant is gearing up to launch a new phone.
After launching smartphones with horizontal fold and vertical fold, the company is now planning to launch a new device with a double-folding design. There’s a possibility that the phone could be announced later this year.
Samsung had previously said that it will diversify its portfolio of foldable smartphones in the year 2021 as the company aims to make this category more accessible. Along with a double-folding design, Samsung is also expected to launch a Galaxy Z Fold Lite.
It’s noteworthy that Samsung won’t be the first smartphone maker to work on something like a double-folding design. TCL had showcased its double-folding concept smartphone about a year ago and Xiaomi is also reportedly working on the same.
There are two concept designs of the upcoming Samsung smartphone — one with screen bends in two opposite directions and another with sides folding backward and their edges meeting around the rear panel.
It remains to be seen what the company ends up calling this foldable smartphone and when exactly the device will be launched. We expect to know more about the phone in the coming weeks or months but one thing is for sure — the device won’t be cheap.

Former U.S President Donald Trump who suffered a massive media blackout in the aftermath of the Capitol riots in January that led to the loss of lives may soon unveil his own social networking platform in a few months. One of Trump’s aides, Jason Miller hinted in a Fox News interview that the former president will launch his own social network in about three months.
Donald Trump had endured an anticlimactic last few days as President following his open support for protesters who later overran the Capitol while a session was ongoing to cement his loss to his contender Joe Biden in the Presidential polls. Twitter and Facebook had responded swiftly by blocking him from their platforms on the accusation that he encouraged violence. Millions of his supporters had quit the platforms in support of Trump but the ban had remained.
While the details of this new social network by Trump are not yet available, he will certainly have to overcome several hurdles to establish the platform. There would be both regulatory and operational challenges that must be overcome for Trump’s plans to become reality. Although he might have a strong conservative support base that may form the backbone of this new social network, it remains to be seen whether this is another of Trump’s usual theatrics and alternative facts or a real response to the humiliation and isolation he suffered in the last days of his presidency.
Part of the stumbling blocks that must be overcome is the fact that Trump had become a sort of heavy-duty public personality and may not be able to muster the much-needed support of companies who had publicly severed ties with him in the aftermath of the Capitol incident, in terms of provision of cloud services.
There are also regulations in force that will seriously limit Trump’s ability to float the social network. The coming months will therefore reveal whether the dream will become a reality or if we have to wait much longer, or forever!
