Here’s how Facial Expressions could made Apple Face ID more secure

The Face ID security feature from Apple is one of the best form of facial recognition system found in a smartphone. But, it can apparently be made even more secure by making distinct facial expressions.

Apple

According to a BYU report (Via Gizmodo), facial recognition is one of the better forms of biometric security but there are still various tricks that can be used to circumvent the systems (including a static photo of one’s face). But now, researchers have developed a new algorithm that could help in deal with these issues by having the user register a distinct facial movement. This could even involve making funny faces while registering a new face into a smartphone.

Notably, the Cupertino based giant’s implementation of the facial recognition uses a front facing TrueDepth camera, which maps and matches the physical geometry of the users’ face. Meaning, a simple flat picture can not fool the system. Although, this system isn’t perfect either as researchers have found ways to circumvent Face ID as well, by accessing someone’s iPhone when they are asleep. D.J. Lee, as electrical and computing professor at Brigham Young University, proposed that there is a simple and effective method to greatly raise the difficulty of comprising a facial recognition system.

Apple

This system is called the Concurrent Two-Factor Identity Verification or C2FIV, which would require users to register themselves by performing a specific and easily repeatable facial motion that would only take a couple of seconds. In other words, people can just make a funny face, or silently read a secret phase, which would have their lips move. These motions would then be recorded along with the basic facial features as well. Basically, the system would record subtle ways one’s face changes as muscles expand and contract.

Honor Magic flagship lineup will surpass Huawei Mate and P-series, claims CEO Zhao Ming

Honor recently separated from the Chinese tech giant Huawei and is now being operated as an independent brand. The company has launched the Honor V40 smartphone and has a few other devices in the pipeline.

The company’s CEO Zhao Ming has confirmed that the company will be launching its flagship smartphone later this year under the Magic lineup. Now, he says that the flagship smartphones lineup from Honor will surpass the Huawei Mate- and P-series.

Honor
Honor CEO Zhao Ming

This is quite an ambitious project as the Mate-series and P-series are the flagship devices lineup from Huawei and are usually well-received in the market, setting the benchmark for the camera performance, among others.

Honor now aims to be an iconic technology brand globally and the company can get access to the needed resources after being separated from Huawei. As Huawei is facing sanctions by the United States, it cannot acquire components and services with US ties. But those restrictions no longer apply to Honor.

A recent report has revealed that the Honor Magic 3 will come powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset, competing with flagship smartphones from other brands. It is also being reported that there will be a Magic X smartphone, which is likely to be a foldable device from the brand.

Apart from the flagship devices, the company has also planned a few mid-range smartphones and tablets to be launched later this year. Honor definitely has an interesting lineup of devices in the pipeline for this year which could give the brand a much-needed boost and attract users, enabling the company to achieve its aim.

TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) has just signed a deal for more than 100 water tankers as the situation is expected to worsen in Taiwan, which is suffers from a drought.

In other words, the order for 100 water tankers might just be the start for the company, which would also inevitably lead to higher costs on the company.

TSMC

An old report from 2019 also reveals that TSMC’s daily consumption of water during the year was around 156,000 tons per day. But, this figure has likely risen by a notable degree. Notably, Taiwan had recently assured that the nation will be able to keep its chip makers running till May, with its current supply of water. Sony unveils new PS5 VR controllers with adaptive triggers, better ergonomics

Japanese tech giant Sony Corporation has unveiled a new set of VR controllers for the PlayStation 5. This announcement comes amidst a shortage in supply of the latest console as a result of chip shortage in the global market which has resulted in scalpers selling the console at premium prices. Sony PS5 VR controllers

The new Sony PS5 VR controllers adopt an orb shape and this is quite different from the design of the existing PlayStation Move motion controllers. Rather, it looks more like traditional VR controllers. That notwithstanding, the controllers come with the same adaptive trigger technology found on the DualSense PS5 controller. Both controllers have tensions in their triggers, a tech which SOny plans to deploy in future VR games.

Further, the PS5 VR controllers come with haptic feedback designed to give users an immersive gaming experience. It also comes with finger touch detection that will let the controllers detect fingers when it is just resting. According to Hideaki Nishino, head of planning and management at PlayStation, finger touch detection enables users to make more natural gestures with their hands during gameplay.Sony PS5 VR controllers

In addition, there is a ring at the bottom of the controllers which tracks it to Sony’s new VR headset. This is said to be better than what is currently available on the PS Move controllers. Apart from that, the design also has far better ergonomics.

Sony is yet to showcase the design of its next-gen PS5 VR headset but teasers released by the company show that it will have an improved field of view, resolution, and even a single cord to make it easier to use.Sony PS5 VR controllers

We don’t expect the PS5 VR headset to be outed this year but there is no doubt that the firm is concluding arrangements to commence testing of the headset with game developers soon. For now, we have already seen the controllers for the VR and they look awesome. We don’t expect anything short of spectacular from the VR headset.

Chinese firms test tools to bypass new Privacy rules from Apple: Report

Apple had recently announced a new set of changes in its privacy rules. These would essentially block third party applications from tracking users’ data. But now, it seems that Chinese companies already working on a new tool to bypass these new rules to continue tracking iPhone users.

Apple iPhone 12 All Colors Featured

According to a FinancialTimes report, the new tool is being developed to enable these Chinese tech giants like ByteDance and Tencent, to serve iPhone users targeted mobile advertisements. The Cupertino based giant is expected to roll out the new privacy updates in the coming weeks. This would offer its userbase a higher degree of privacy. For those unaware, apps were generally able to use Apple’s IDFA system to track the users that click on ads and the apps they use.

But now, these firms would need to ask for permission to gather this tracking data. This might not seem like a major change, but in practice, it implies of a multi billion dollar worth shift in the advertising industry. The change has met opposition from major firms like Facebook, as most users would most likely decline on being tracked. Thus, the China Advertising Association, with over 2,000 members, has decided to launch a new method of tracking and identifying iPhone users. This new tool is dubbed as CAID.

Apple

This new tool is being widely tested by tech companies and advertisers at the moment in China. TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, stated that advertisers “can use the CAID as a substitute if the user’s IDFA is unavailable.” Furthermore, sources close to both Tencent and ByteDance have confirmed the news, although, both companies have yet to comment on the matter. Similarly, even Apple has yet to offer a statement regarding CAID. But, it has stated that the rule will be universally applicable and will not have any exceptions.

Apple foldable iPhone Concept design based on leaks adopts a flip design

Apple has been in the rumor mills as having a foldable phone which will debut in 2022. As a matter of fact, since Samsung and a couple of other OEMs including Motorola have released foldable models, it is natural that people look forward to Apple releasing its own. Graphic designer Technizo in conjunction with LetsGoDigital has now pieced together information from leaks and a few Apple patents to come up with a possible concept design of the long-awaited Apple flip foldable iPhone, which has been predicted to be released in 2022.Apple flip foldable iPhone

The concept design is based on the premise that the device will use a flexible display panel having an OLED screen. The product renders reflect speculations that the foldable iPhone will retain the notch from previous iPhones.

Technizo’s concept design also shows a similar camera system to the iPhone 12 Pro, although this projection looks shaky since the device is at least two years away from its potential launch. Obviously, by 2022, more advanced camera systems would have been deployed on newer iPhones. The graphic designer released a video of the concept design of the prototype flip foldable iPhone, revealing all the possible angles and sides of the device. Check out the video from down below.

The flip iPhone concept design also suggests that the smartphone will come with a small display at the rear panel although no information is available yet of the size of the display. Considering the size of the secondary display, we doubt if it will do anything other than show notifications. There have been rumors that indeed several tests had been carried out by Foxconn on the flip foldable smartphone to establish its durability.Apple Flip iPhone

Flip foldable smartphones hold some promise and several phone makers are pursuing active research in this area. There had been several patents popping up and these provide an inkling of the intensity of the race to overcome the several challenges and drawbacks inherent in the production especially of foldable displays.

We should also point out the resemblance of the design to that of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip which was unveiled in 2019 as well as the Motorola Razr flip phone.

Xiaomi’s Mi Stylus patent leaks, may accompany the Mi Pad 5

Xiaomi is arguably one of the biggest tech exports from China and even inside its home country, the brand is super popular. That is why the number of fans looking forward to the brand’s upcoming tablet looks unprecedented. It has been a long while since the tech giant refreshed its tablet line. Xiaomi has already confirmed that it has not given up on the tablet market. Also, there are speculations that the brand is working on the Mi Pad 4’s successor and it will be called the Mi Pad 5. Mi Stylus patent

A tipster has now shared the sketch of a stylus pen said to be a Xiaomi-patented product designed for a tablet. This could be for the Mi Pad 5 but that is not yet confirmed. The patent sketch shows the Mi Stylus features a similar design to the Apple Pencil. There actually nothing spectacular as it looks like an ordinary pen but with a pen cap-like structure at the bottom. There are speculations that the device will have a USB Type-C interface that will be used to charge it. Of course, connectivity may likely be via Bluetooth.

The design sketch also shows that it will have a magnetic-like area at the center which can be used to attach the frame to a tablet at any time. This aligns with rumors earlier on that the Pad 5 will come with an aluminum alloy back panel.

It will definitely be an important feature if the Mi Pad 5 will indeed have a Stylus pen but we are not so sure about that. So, don’t get your hopes too high. We don’t expect the features to go beyond the basics like the touch function.

As a reminder, the Mi Pad 5 is rumored to pack a Snapdragon 870 chipset. The table is expected to come with a great dissipation system which should improve the performance to a large extent, especially for gaming. The tablet is also expected to run on a new MIUI for Pad operating system specially designed for tablet products. The user experience is expected to be different from that of the mobile interface.
