Nokia Power Earbuds Lite and Nokia Portable Wireless Speaker announced; Power Earbuds gets new colors

Apart from the Nokia 2.4 and Nokia 3.4 smartphones, HMD Global also announced the Nokia Power Earbuds Lite. This is a more affordable version of the Nokia Power Earbuds that was announced last year.

Nokia Power Earbuds Lite

Nokia Power Earbuds Lite

The new Nokia Power Earbuds Lite keeps the design of the original. The tradeoffs include a significant reduction in total battery life from 150 hours on the Power Earbuds to 35 hours for the lite version.

That should not be a surprise as the battery capacity of the charging case of the Nokia Power Earbuds Lite is just 600mAh while the original has a 3000mAh battery capacity. The manufacturer says the earbuds will last 5 hours on a single charge and the case will provide up to 6 additional charges for the earbuds before it is empty. Another tradeoff is the switch to MicroUSB charging.

The earbuds feature 6mm graphene drivers, connect via Bluetooth 5.0, and weigh 48.4 grams with the charging case. The Nokia Power Earbuds Lite has an IPX7 rating and is waterproof up to 30 minutes in 1m of water. It also has touch controls.

The earbuds are available in Charcoal, Fjord, and Snow and come with three pairs of interchangeable tips in three sizes. A price tag was not revealed but it should sell for less than the €79 launch price of the Power Earbuds.

Talking about the Nokia Power Earbuds; HMD Global announced two new color variants for the earphones. In addition to Charcoal Black and Night Gray, it is now available in Polar Night and Mint too. The new colorways will be available next month.

Nokia Portable Wireless Speaker featured

Nokia Portable Wireless Speaker

HMD Global also announced the first Nokia Bluetooth speaker since taking over the brand. The Nokia Portable Wireless Speaker as it is called is shaped like a donut with a fabric-covered upper half and a plastic lower half. It comes in Black and has a strap to make it easy to carry around and also hang on hooks. The design reminds us of the Nest Mini speaker.

The lower half of the speaker is home to the volume control buttons, power button, play/pause button. The charging port is covered with a flap. With this design, the Nokia Portable Wireless Speaker should have an IP rating but it doesn’t, no thanks to the fabric top.

The speaker has a 43mm driver and connects via Bluetooth 5.0. You can even link two speakers together for stereo output. There is an 800mAh battery inside that provides up to 4 hours of playback and an integrated microphone allows you to use it to make calls.

The price was not revealed but HMD Global says it will go on sale in November.

Amazfit X will retail for 1,999 yuan ($295) when it will launch commercially in Q4 2020

Back in August 2019, Huami Technology unveiled Amazfit X curved smartwatch. The company crowdfunded it earlier this year on Indiegogo for global customers, followed by on Xiaomi Youpin in China last month. Now, as the product has successfully reached its crowdfunding goals on both these platforms, the firm officially announced its retail price along with commercial availability for China at today’s Amazfit GTR/GTS 2 launch event.

Amazfit X Concept Smartwatch Featured

The Amazfit X is one of a kind wearable with a curved flexible OLED display. Its only competitor is nubia Watch, which is also still in the crowdfunding phase. However, unlike the nubia wearable whose future is uncertain, the one from Amazfit now has an official retail price as well as rough information regarding its commercial availability.

At the Amazfit GTR 2 and Aamzfit GTS 2 launch event, Huami Technology, the company behind Amazfit-branded fitness products officially revealed that the retail price of Amazfit X will be 1,999 yuan ($295). Surprisingly, It happens to be 100% more or double than the curved smartwatch’s 999 yuan/$150 crowdfunding price.

Also, the firm did not announce the exact launch date of this wearable. Instead, it simply mentioned that it will be available in Q4 2020, which begins next month. Above all, it will be probably limited to China, at least for the first few months.

That said, if the mass manufacturing process goes as planned, interested customers in the company’s home country will be able to snag it from online and offline retailers before the end of this year.

LG patents a unique device with a rollable OLED display

Flexible displays have shown great advancements in recent times. Ever since their inception, the new breed of the display has branched out to fields like, smartphones, TVs and may soon be seen in other areas as well. Now, a recent LG patent reveals a new product that features a unique design with a rollable display.

LG

According to a LetsGoDigital report, the South Korean tech giant filed a patent application for this ‘Electronic device’ with the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) back in 2019. This got approved earlier this month arrives with various product sketches as well. Looking at these images, a device with a primary base can be observed which features all of the components as well as the rolled up display. This base has a square rectangular cuboid or triangular design, based on the variations.

LG

Judging by its size, it is meant to be a compact and carryable device that might serve multiple purposes. The display is a rollable OLED panel, which is similar to the one seen in its Signature TV R that featured a rollable display as well. A power button can be found on top of the display device, while additional buttons are also placed next to it that control the display rolling out or rolling in. Although, images show that the user can also manually pull out the display if needed.

At the moment, it is unsure what purpose the device actually serves as the images reveal that it indeed has a camera as well on one end and the display can be used for multimedia entertainment. Another interesting feature is that the device also has a stylus, which may be indicative of the gadget being targetted towards professionals in the creative fields. Furthermore, when pulling out the display, the aspect ratio of the image being displayed is changed according to the amount of display that is rolled out. So, users can choose what length of the display they require.

LG

Unfortunately, the name of this product is currently unknown and its internal specifications are also unclear. However, LG has provided an in depth breakdown of the components that will be housed on the inside of the device’s casing, so we can assume that the company might actually be working on such a device and could possibly showcase it in notable events like CES 2021. Although, that is just speculation so take it with a pinch of salt.

Huami said that the saturation measurements can reach up to 96 percent, which is almost the same as a professional oximeter that is used specifically for the task. The company has also developed a new sleep engine that can run with the blood oxygen detection feature to map the breathing cycles of the user during sleep.

In other words, this maps the blood oxygen levels at night as well, which is a feature that is likely inspired by the ongoing pandemic. The wearable also has a built-in PAI health assessment system that converts the various health data gathered over time into values that can be read later on through the use of algorithms. The Amazfit GTR 2 also features 12 different sports modes, which it can automatically detect, and has a water resistance of up to 50 meters. It also features essential connectivity options like Bluetooth and can connect with wireless earphones as well.

For storage, 4GB of internal storage is also offered and users can store music locally on the device. The latest Huami wearable is supported by both Android and iOS smartphones, features the XiaoAI voice assistant, and can even connect to WiFi to download music directly without a paired handset. This also allows the device to support GPS and GLONASS positioning systems. Its battery life can last for up to 14 days with regular use and about 38 days when used just as a basic watch. The device still supports NFC for various payments and other security features as well.

Amazfit GTS 2

The other wearable that Huami announced in the press conference was the Amazfit GTS 2. This device has a thinner and lighter design in comparison to the GTR 2 but still features the same “roundness, integration, and immersion,” in other words, a similar diamond-like coating for added protection. Unlike the GTR 2 however, the Amazfit GTS 2 features a rectangular 1.65 inch AMOLED display with rounded corners. It also has 450 nits of maximum brightness and a 341 PPI density for clear images.

The gadget has an anodized metallic body that arrives in three colors, namely obsidian black, streamer gold, and dolphin gray. Similar to GTR 2, it also features 12 sports modes and the company claims that it will support up to 90 different modes in the future. The Amazfit GTS 2 is also quite similar in terms of health-related prowess with the GTR 2 a well, with it also having the same PAI health system and smart functions. Its battery life lasts for about 7 days with regular use and 20 days when used as a simple watch.

Just like the Amazfit GTR 2, the GTS 2 also has onboard storage. It also has a microphone and speaker so users can take calls on their watch.

Xiaomi Mi Note 3 and Mi 8 Lite updated to MIUI 12 globally

Xiaomi has been updating its smartphones to MIUI 12, the latest version of its Android-based mobile operating system worldwide. These devices have been getting the update first in China, followed by the global rollout. As the Mi 8 Lite and Mi Note 3 got the MIUI 12 update last month, they have now begun to receive it globally as well.

The Xiaomi Mi Note 3 is from 2017, whereas the Mi 8 Lite debuted in 2018. However, both of them launched with MIUI 9 out of the box but with Android Nougat and Android Ore respectively.

They have received two Android as well as  MIUI updates each and are currently running MIUI 11 based on Android Pie and Android 10 respectively. MIUI 12, which has now begun to roll out to these handsets is expected to be their last major software update.

That said, the MIUI 12 update for Mi Note 3 comes with build number V12.0.1.0.PCHMIXM. On the other hand, the build for Mi 8 comes with version V12.0.3.0.QDTMIXM. They are currently being rolled out in batches and should reach all the units if the early adopters don’t face any major issues.

It is good to see Xiaomi providing updates to its older mid-range smartphones. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for its most recent devices as the company’s software rollout has degraded over the years.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra to pack 5000mAh battery

Samsung has launched both the flagship lineups of the years — Galaxy S20 series and Galaxy Note20 series. Now, the South Korean giant is gearing up to launch the next-generation Samsung Galaxy S21 series smartphones next year.

Even though there are few months for the Galaxy S21 models to go official, details about the smartphones have already started surfacing online. Now, the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra has reportedly been spotted on TUV Rheinland listing with model number SM-G998.

The listing reveals that the smartphone will come packed with a 5,000mAh battery. This is in line with the previous report which claimed that Samsung will use a battery with model number EB-BG998ABY which will be marketed as a 5,000mAh capacity battery. It could also support 60W fast charging technology.

The 3C listing of this series suggests that the Galaxy S21 will be fuelled by a 3,880mAh rated capacity battery while the Galaxy S21 Plus will pack a 4,660mAh battery. The batteries are reportedly manufactured by a Chinese company and not Samsung.

EDITOR’S PICK: Samsung’s Exynos 1000 SoC might outperform the upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 875

The upcoming flagship smartphone from Samsung could be powered by the company’s own 5nm Exynos chipset while the same models will also be available with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 875 SoC instead of Exynos chipset.

The company is expected to offer a 40MP selfie camera on the S21 Ultra. The phone is said to have a quad-camera setup on the back, featuring a 108MP ISOCELL HM2 sensor along with a 12MP ultra-wide camera, a 10MP telephoto lens, and another telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom support.

The flagship smartphone is also rumored to come with an under-display camera, eliminating the need for a notch on top of the screen. There are also rumors suggesting the Galaxy S21 Ultra having S-Pen support to replace the Note series of smartphones.
