Google Pixel 5, Pixel 4a (5G) launch date could be October 8

On Monday, Google unveiled the Snapdragon 730G powered Google Pixel 4a mid-range phone. Its 5G variant dubbed as the Pixel 4a (5G) and the Pixel 5 are slated to hit the markets by fall. While the company confirmed the pricing of the Pixel 4a (5G) as $499, it did not reveal when it will be formally launching both handsets. It seems that the search engine giant has accidentally revealed the launch date of the upcoming Pixel phones through an official blog post.

Spotted first by a 9to5Google reader, the Pixel 4a announcement blog post by Google France mentioned that the pre-orders of the Pixel 4a (5G) and Pixel 5 will begin from Oct. 8. The highlighted line shown in the screenshot below (machine-translated text) is no longer available in the blog post, but its still viewable through Google Cache.

The English version of the blog post never carried the deleted text. Google is known for carrying out pre-orders shortly after its launch event, it is likely that the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a (5G) may launch on Oct. 8.

The Pixel 4a (5G) will be slotted between Pixel 4a that costs $349 and the Pixel 5 that is rumored to be priced at $649 or $699. The smartphone is likely to house a larger OLED display of 6.1 inches. The device may sport a plastic construction like the Pixel 4a. It may offer improved camera capabilities than the Pixel 4a. The phone could be equipped with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of built-in storage. It could be powered by Snapdragon 690 or Snapdragon 765G chipset.

The Pixel 5 could be sporting a 5.8-inch display. However, contradictory information that surfaced yesterday suggested that it may house a 6.67-inch OLED display with 120Hz refresh rate support. The handset is likely to feature Snapdragon 765G and an improved set of cameras.

Redmi K30 Extreme Commemorative Edition to debut on August 11; Could be the rumored K30 Ultra

Xiaomi’s upcoming virtual event on Aug. 11 will be held to celebrate its tenth anniversary. The brand is expected to announce multiple devices on the said date. Yesterday, the company confirmed that the company will announce the Xiaomi Mi 10 Extreme Commemorative Edition smartphone on Aug. 11. Today, the company released an official confirmation that the Redmi K30 Extreme Commemorative Edition smartphone will be also unveiled through the same event.

Redmi K30 Extreme Commemorative Edition August 11

The Redmi K30 Extreme Commemorative Edition is also listed for reservations on the Jingdong Mall retailer of China. The company has not revealed any details on the specs of the phone. It appears to be the M2006J10C phone that recently appeared in the database of the TENAA authority of China with full specifications and images. Earlier leaks suggested that this phone could be debuting as Redmi K30 Ultra.

Redmi K30 Extreme Commemorative Edition specifications (Rumored)

The M2006J10C phone is believed to powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ SoC. The handset is expected to arrive in 6 GB, 8 GB, and 12 GB RAM variants and storage models like 128 GB, 256 GB, and 512 GB.

The handset is backed by a 4,500mAh battery. It is expected to arrive with support for 33W fast charging. It is preinstalled with Android 10 OS and the latest MIUI 12 skin. The device lacks support for external storage.

Xiaomi M2006J10C Redmi K30 Ultra 5G TENAA

The M2006J10C has a 6.67-inch notch-less OLED screen that delivers 1080 x 2400 pixels Full HD+ resolution and 20:9 aspect ratio. The display is likely to support a 120Hz refresh rate. It has a 20-megapixel pop-up selfie camera and a 64-megapixel Sony IMX686 quad cameras system. Lastly, it features an in-screen fingerprint reader.

Mysterious OnePlus Clover mid-range phone spotted on Geekbench

OnePlus Nord may not be the only OnePlus mid-ranger arriving this year. A recent report revealed that the Chinese firm may launch two more mid-rangers this year. One of them could be codenamed as Billie. The Billie device was spotted on the Geekbench benchmarking platform recently. A mysterious OnePlus phone labeled as Clover has made its way on Geekbench. It seems to be the other Nord branded mid-range phone for this year.

As per the Geekbench 5 listing, the OnePlus Clover smartphone is driven by the dated Snapdragon 660 chipset and 4 GB of RAM. The device is loaded with Android 10 OS. In the single-core test of Geekbench 5, the OnePlus Clover scored 336 points. It recorded 1495 points in the multi-core test.

OnePlus Clover Geekbench

If the OnePlus Clover is a real device and not a fake listing on Geekbench, it could end up as an entry-level phone from the brand. It could be positioned lower than the OnePlus Billie phone that was spotted with a 5G-ready Snapdragon 690 mobile platform.

At the beginning of this month, a reliable tipster had shared a video that carried 3D renders of upcoming OnePlus phones with triple and dual rear cameras. Both phones that were dubbed as Aurora in the video were seen with punch-hole displays. It is yet to be confirmed whether these devices could be the alleged Nord series OnePlus Billie and Clover phones.

OnePlus Aurora

Recently, the alleged OnePlus 8T was spotted with Android 11 OS and 8 GB of RAM on Geekbench. It is unclear whether the device is powered by Snapdragon 865 or the latest Snapdragon 865 Plus mobile platform.

With reports talking about a couple of Nord series phones and OnePlus 8T, OnePlus seems to have a busy schedule for the year ahead. Hopefully, newer reports will reveal more information on the upcoming OnePlus smartphones.

Renders and price of Redmi 9C NFC leaked ahead of launch

The Redmi 9C launched last month in Europe as a budget smartphone. The device has triple rear cameras, a massive 5000mAh battery, an octa-core processor and a starting price of €119. It turns out there will be a version of the phone with NFC that will cost a bit more. Renders and pricing of this NFC version have been leaked.

The renders and prices were posted on twitter by Sudhanshu Ambhore (@Sudhanshu1414). As seen in the tweet, the NFC version of the budget smartphone will come in the same orange, black, and blue color variants of the standard version.

The Redmi 9C NFC version will also come in the same configurations as the standard version – 2GB RAM + 32GB and 3GB RAM + 64GB. They will be priced at €129 and €149 respectively, €10 more than the non-NFC version.

There is no info on when the Redmi 9C NFC version will go on sale but if you want a budget phone with NFC for contactless payment, then you may want to wait for Xiaomi to announce the Redmi 9C NFC version.

Google Pixel 4a vs iPhone SE 2020: Specs Comparison

Google officially announced the Pixel 4a: a device from the second generation of Pixel affordable phones. It is very compact, it is affordable and it offers the same software support as the most expensive Pixel devices. While waiting for its availability scheduled for October, we can compare this Pixel 4a with another compact and affordable device which made a huge success this year. The Pixel 4a is the perfect rival of the iPhone SE 2020: does it stand a chance against the only last-generation affordable iPhone? Let’s discover it together through a specs comparison.

Design

Apple made the iPhone SE 2020 with premium materials, including a glass back and an aluminum frame. Despite being affordable, it is even water-resistant with the IP67 certification (dustproof as well). But on the other hand, its design is very outdated: the handset has the same look as the old iPhone 8 released back in 2017, with ugly thick bezels around the display. It even brought back the Touch ID. The Google Pixel 4a is definitely more beautiful with its borderless display adopting a punch-hole design, but its materials are cheaper: its body is made of plastic and it does not offer any protection against dust and water. Make your choice: design or build quality?

Display

Despite the iPhone SE 2020 has a pretty nice Retina display with the True-tone technology and higher brightness, the OLED panel of the Google Pixel 4a coming with the HDR certification is definitely more exciting. On the other hand, the iPhone SE 2020 has a more compact display (the diagonal is just 4.7 inches, which makes it the most compact last-generation flagship), so it is easier to use with one hand and to keep in a pocket. The Google Pixel 4a has a way bigger 5.81-inch panel, but surprisingly, it is lighter than iPhone SE: it weighs just 143 grams. Both phones get stereo speakers and great audio quality.

Specs & Software

The hardware department of the iPhone SE 2020 is superior to the Google Pixel 4a: the handset packs the Apple A13 Bionic SoC which is the same flagship chipset found on the iPhone 11 lineup. The Google Pixel 4a is powered by the midrange Snapdragon 730G SoC. Another big difference is the operating system: iPhone SE 2020 runs iOS, while Google Pixel 4a runs Android. Both will be updated for a long time, but the user experience is very different. Unfortunately, iPhone SE 2020 and Google Pixel 4a do not come with 5G connectivity. This fall, Google will release a variant of the Pixel 4a with 5G support and a different chipset: probably the Snapdragon 765G.

Camera

Apple iPhone SE 2020 and Google Pixel 4a are very close if we consider the camera department. They both feature a 12 MP main sensor with OIS, but with different software and algorithm. Unfortunately, we still had no chance to try the Google Pixel 4a or to see enough camera samples to give a definitive verdict. In each case, you get a pretty nice camera phone, but not a camera phone and no secondary sensors. Even the selfie cameras are pretty nice, despite you can find something better in the market.

Battery

The battery life is the weakest point of the iPhone SE 2020: with just 1821 mAh, it barely brings you to the end of the working day with moderate use. The Google Pixel 4a has a more generous 3140 mAh unit which can last a lot more on a single charge. If you want a battery phone, just do not go for the Apple iPhone SE 2020 and get a Google Pixel 4a instead. But note that the iPhone SE 2020 supports wireless charging, while Google Pixel 4a does not. Both support 18W fast charging.

Price

The iPhone SE 2020 has a starting price of $399/€399 for the 64 GB configuration. The price of the Google Pixel 4a is different depending on the country, but it goes between $349/€349 and €389 for the configuration with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. The iPhone SE 2020 is definitely a better phone when it comes to performance and builds quality. It is a hard fight when it comes to cameras, while Google Pixel 4a has a bigger battery and a more modern design. Naturally, there is the eternal Android vs iOS battle which we are not going to discuss in this comparison. Both come with a very compact and lightweight design, unlike almost every phone released in 2020. There is not a definitive winner of this comparison, but only the one which meets your needs the most. Which one would you pick between these two compact phones?

Xiaomi edges Huawei in Q2 2020 to emerge the 3rd largest phone vendor in Europe

Recently, Counterpoint Research released a report of the European smartphone market for Q1 2020 which showed that Xiaomi achieved an astronomical growth of 145% YoY. Market research firm Canalys has also released a report of phone shipments in Europe for the second quarter of the year.

After a successful outing in Q1 2020, Xiaomi efforts to gain more grounds in Europe paid off as the report shows the company beat embattled fellow Chinese OEM Huawei to rank as the third-largest smartphone vendor in the whole of Europe in the second quarter of the year 2020.

The data also reveals that Samsung continued its leadership of the market in the second quarter with a 30% market share. The company lead has continuously shrunk with a 31%  YoY drop in its market share.

Apple occupies the second spot with a quarterly market share of 21% representing a YoY growth of 42%. Xiaomi is at the third spot with a market share of 17%, a year-on-year increase of 65%. This data shows that the brand continues to occupy the first place in Spain in terms of market share.

It is also important to note that Xiaomi and Apple are the only manufacturers in Europe that have increased their share in the second quarter. Among them, Apple increased by 42% and Xiaomi increased by 65%, with market shares of 21% and 17% respectively.

Huawei, due to some well-known reasons, experienced a drop in its shipments in Europe by 17%, dropping one place in the ranking. Despite emerging the fourth-largest smartphone vendor in Europe, Huawei is still the largest vendor in the global smartphone market, beating Samsung to the crown for the second quarter of 2020. Samsung is ranked second while Apple occupies the third spot with an increase in shipment, thanks to the iPhone SE 2020. Xiaomi and OPPO are ranked fourth and fifth in global shipments respectively.

Samsung promises three years of OS updates; starting with the Galaxy S10 series and later

When it comes to updates, Samsung isn’t at the top of the list. However, it has improved in the past year. Now, it plans to do better as it announced at today’s Galaxy Unpacked event that it will provide 3 years of Android OS updates or in its own words “OS updates up to 3 generations”.

This puts Samsung in the same category as Google, HMD Global, and OnePlus who provide three OS upgrades for their phones. This means Samsung’s new devices, that is, the Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy Note20 Ultra, and the Galaxy Z Fold 2 should get Android 11, Android 12, and Android 13. Samsung isn’t stopping there though.

Samsung 3-years OS updates

All flagships announced starting with the Galaxy S10 series are also eligible for three OS updates. So the Galaxy S10 series should get Android 11 and Android 12 updates. Don’t expect to get them in time though.

Samsung has not said anything yet about tablets but we expect its flagship tablets such as the Galaxy Tab S6 should also get the sea treatment.

With Samsung upping its update game, we expect other manufacturers that are poor at rolling out updates will step up their game as software support is also a criterion for folks when picking up new devices.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 & Tab S7+ with an SD865+ SoC, S Pen support launched

In addition to the Galaxy Z Fold 2, Galaxy Buds Live, Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra, Samsung also launched the Galaxy Tab S7 and Tab S7+. The two tablets are the company’s latest flagship tablets which have been in the rumour mills for quite a while now. The tablets present with all the dressings of a formidable flagship slate positioned towards taking on the Apple iPad Pro.Samsung Galaxy Tab S7

Both model have almost similar designs but the Plus variant features a bigger display size that the tab S7. The Tab S7+ is also slightly thinner than the S7 but is heavier. The major difference between the two is the location of the fingerprint sensors which are manufactured by Goodix Technology. The Galaxy Tab S7 has its fingerprint sensor on the side while the Tab S7+ packs an optical sensor mounted under the display.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 sports an 11-inch LPTS TFT LCD with a WQXGA resolution of 2560×1600 pixels.  The Galaxy Tab S7+ has a bigger and better 12.4-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 2800×1752 pixels (WQXGA+). Both displays have support for 120Hz refresh rate.Samsung Galaxy Tab S7

The models are powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 865+ processor paired with 6GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB of UFS 3.0 storage. There is also a higher variant with 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.0 storage.  The storage can be expanded by a whopping 1TB via a microSD card.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S7
Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 and Samsung Galaxy Tab S7+

On the camera side, the Galaxy Tab S7 and Tab S7+ have the same front and rear cameras. At the rear aspect is a dual-camera setup consisting of a 13MP main sensor with an f/2.0 aperture lens and an 8MP secondary image sensor with an f/2.2 aperture, wide-angle lens. Both devices support recording 4K resolution videos at up to 30fps from the rear cameras. For selfies and webcam, there is an 8MP sensor with an f/2.0 aperture lens.Samsung Galaxy Tab S7+

The battery aspect is one part where the models dazzle. The Galaxy Tab S7 packs an 8,000mAh battery whereas the larger Galaxy Tab S7+ has a mammoth 10,090mAh battery. Both slates feature support for Samsung’s 45W Super Fast Charging technology, which is based on the USB Power Delivery 3.0 specification with Programmable Power Supply (USB-PD PPS).Samsung Galaxy Tab S7

In addition, the slates now have support for S Pen stylus which connects to the tablet via Bluetooth Low Energy and can be attached magnetically to the rear near the cameras. When attached to the rear of the tablet, the S Pen wirelessly charges but even in the low power state, it can still be used as a stylus. If you have the Book Cover, the S Pen even fits snugly underneath the cover.

The S Pen measures 147mm in length and 8.2mm in diameter, weighs only 8g, and is IP68 dust and water-resistant. It retains the same functionality from the previous generation, meaning you can use S Pen Air action gestures to take selfies or videos or control multimedia content. You can also jot down notes in Samsung Notes that can be converted to digital text and then exported to Microsoft Word-supported formats or to a PDF. Samsung Notes’ floating window also returns, letting you take notes or make sketches while you’re in another app.

On the software side, the Galaxy Tab S7 and Tab S7+ run on One UI 2.5 based on Android 10. Samsung has made several tweaks to the UIwith several features added to the operating system. The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra adopts a somewhat impressive and aesthetically appealing design. TheNote 20 Ultra sports a mammoth 6.9-inch OLED display with QHD+ resolution of 1440 pixels and 120Hz refresh rate support. The screen is curved at the sides, minimizing the bezels on the sides. There is a single hole punch at the top which houses the selfie camera and helps minimize the size of the top bezel. The bezel at the bottom edge is also considerably small.

On the camera aspect, the phone packs a triple camera setup at the rear including a 108 megapixels main shooter. The device also packs a periscope lens which explains why the camera bump on the Note 20 Ultra is big.Samsung Galaxy Note 20

Galaxy Z Fold 2 arrives with bigger displays; rest of the specs under wraps

The Galaxy Unpacked event saw Samsung announce a handful of new products including the Galaxy Z Fold 2. The new foldable device has a refined design and larger displays

Galaxy Z Fold 2 featured

Galaxy Z Fold 2 Design

Before we dive into the design, you should know that the official name is the Galaxy Z Fold 2, not Galaxy Fold 2. The name is a confirmation that all Samsung foldable devices will be announced under the Galaxy Z series.

With respect to design, the first thing you notice is the significantly larger cover display. It is a 6.2-inch screen, a massive jump from the  4.6-inch panel of the first-gen Galaxy Fold. Gone are those thick bezels too, and in their place is an edge-to-edge Infinity-O display.

The main screen is also bigger now, measuring 7.6-inches, making it just a little bit larger than the 7.3-inch screen of its predecessor. It too is an Infinity-O display with the hole on the right half of the screen. Samsung says it is made with Ultra-Thin Glass for smooth flexibility.

On the back, Samsung has borrowed the design of the Galaxy Note20. There is a huge bump that houses three cameras and an LED flash and just like the Galaxy Note20, there is no laser focus module. The hideaway hinge also looks better on the new Fold.

The Galaxy Fold will be available in just two colorways: Mystic Black and Mystic Bronze. There will also be a Galaxy Z Fold 2 Thom Browne Edition.

Galaxy Z Fold 2 specs

Samsung has kept a tight lip on the full spec sheet of the debice as what we got today was just a partial reveal and not a full launch.

Price and Availability

Just like the specs, details about pricing and availability weren’t revealed. It has been reported that these details will be revealed at a September launch for the device.

iQOO 5 render reveals it has a curved display; Snapdragon 865 processor confirmed

The iQOO 5 is launching this month and the phone will be featuring a number of impressive features, the chief being 120W fast charge which allows you to charge the device from empty to full in just 15 minutes. A press render has surfaced that shows the upcoming flagship is a beautiful beast.

iQOO 5 press render

The press render was posted on Weibo by Digital Chat Station and it shows that the device will have a curved display and a punch hole at the top left corner. The design reminds us of the OnePlus 8 Pro. According to the source, the phone uses a Samsung FHD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate.

iQOO has made changes to the design from that of the iQOO 3 which has a flat AMOLED display and a 60Hz refresh rate. The flagship also has its hole at the top right corner of the screen. Lovers of a flat display may be disappointed at iQOO’s decision to switch to a curved one but we can agree that it does make the device look better.

iQOO 5 Snapdragon 865 processor

The manufacturer has confirmed the iQOO 5 will have a Snapdragon 865 processor and not the Snapdragon 865 Plus. It will pair it with LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage.

The launch is scheduled for August 17 which is roughly two weeks away. We expect more details will surface before then.

OxygenOS 10.5.3 rolling out for OnePlus Nord improves system stability

OnePlus Nord launched last month as the brand’s first 5G mid-range smartphone. Though it is up for sale in Europe, it will be going on sale in India only tomorrow (August 6). However, the company has already started shipping pre-orders. That said, the handset is currently receiving its third system update with build number OxygenOS 10.5.3.

OnePlus Nord Blue Marble Featured

Unlike the first two system updates for OnePlus Nord, which brought camera optimizations and July security patch, the changelog for this one only mentions a single line. And that is “Improved system stability” (via PiunikaWeb).

Unfortunately, we are not sure what this update is meant to improve. Anyway, if you own an OnePlus Nord, make sure to download and install the update as it could be something important.

On the other hand, OnePlus will be unveiling HydrogenOS 11 in China on August 10 with features like Zen Mode 2.0 and revamped dark mode. Similarly, the brand teased the arrival of OxygenOS 11 Open Beta builds for global markets very soon.

Since OnePlus has promised two Android updates and three years of security patches for the OnePlus Nord, it will be receiving more builds in stable, open beta, and closed beta channels in the coming days.

LG Q92 5G packing a Snapdragon 765G chipset appears on Geekbench

Earlier this month, a rumour emerged that LG was planning to release several 5G smartphones including the LG Q92 5G. That rumour is gathering traction as an LG model listed as LGE LM-Q920N and believed to be the Q92 5G smartphone has been spotted on GeekBench. This comes not too long after the model appeared on Google Play Console.LG Q92

The GeekBench listing shows the device achieved a multi-core test score of 1946 and a single-core score of 613. This falls in the same performance with the Velvet 5G. That is no doubt due to the presence of the same chipset on both models.

The Q92 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chipset listed as “lito” which is the mid-range chip’s codename. The processor is a fast mid-range ARM-based SoC. It is one of the first chipsets that integrate a 5G modem- the Snapdragon X5. The modem brings support for speeds of up to 3.7 / 1.6 Mbps (down- and upload), mmWave and Sub-6. The processor also features the Adreno 620 GPU. The SoC is paired with 6GB of RAM on the model that just hit GeekBench but we can’t say if that will be the base model.

The Google Play Console listing shows the smartphone’s display will have an FHD+ resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels but the screen size is still unknown. Further, the Q92 will boot Android 10 OS out of the box.

LG is yet to officially release any details of the upcoming model. However, the Q92 5G is believed to be a cheaper alternative to the well-received LG Velvet 5G.

Redmi enters top 10 TV brands (online) list in China within a year

Xiaomi has been leading the China smart TV market for a while now. Following the footsteps, its sub-brand Redmi ranked 10th position (online channel) for the first time in the 31st week of 2020. The data comes from Aowei Cloud Network and it was shared by none other than Lin Faqiang, the operations director of Redmi TV.

China Smart TV Market Week 31 2020 Aowei Cloud Network

Redmi became an independent brand in early 2019. Since then, the brand ventured into various product categories apart from smartphones. It launched its first smart TV in H2 last year and currently has 6 models on sale ranging from 999 yuan ($144) to 19,999 yuan ($2,881).

Due to competitive pricing and feature-rich products, Redmi managed to enter the top 10 TV brands (online) list in China within one year from entering the segment. That’s a great achievement for a new player but it all happened due to backing from its parent company Xiaomi.

On June 25, the brand even likely broke the 100-inch TV segment sales record with its Redmi Smart TV MAX 98. The brand managed to sell over 1,500 units of this TV model in 10 hours, 32 minutes and 18 seconds across all channels.

Having said that, here’s the complete list of top 10 TV brands (online) in China in 31st week of 2020 by Aowei Cloud Network.

Google to launch a new smart speaker soon with a ~€100 price tag

Just a few days ago, Google announced the Pixel 4a smartphone. Now, a new leak has revealed we may be getting a new smart speaker this month too. The new speaker should launch under the Nest brand and it has an affordable price tag.

According to a tweet by Roland Quandt, the new Google (Nest) Home smart speaker with the codename “J2” will launch soon. The speaker will cost about €100 which is lesser than the launch price of the original Google Home.

He adds that the smart speaker will be available from the end of August according to the info from retailers. When it launches, it will be available in Charcoal and Chalk.

This appears to be a different speaker from the one that leaked last month (pictured below) which is internally known as “prince”. So it seems we will be getting not one but two smart Nest Home smart speakers this year.

Google Nest Speaker

Google is also expected to launch a new streaming stick codenamed “Sabrina” which will bring a new Android TV interface. We are not sure if Google will announce all these smart products at the same time or if it will launch some alongside the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G later.
