Samsung Electro Mechanics gets iPhone camera contract as Apple looks to diversify supply chain

As the United States government continues to impose sanctions against Chinese companies, Apple is now looking to diversify its production and supply chain to reduce its dependence on the Chinese market.

In line with that, a new report coming from Korea claims that Samsung Electro-Mechanics has joined the list of suppliers of Apple for the camera parts. This seems like a major win for the Korean company, which counts Samsung Electronics as its core customer.

iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max
Apple iPhone 11 Series Camera Module

The report says that the reason behind Apple selecting Samsung Electro-Mechanics as a new camera lens supplier is to stabilize its supply chain and to reduce the cost. So far, Apple has sourced lenses from Lagan Precision and Genius Electronics.

It’s noteworthy that Samsung Electro-Mechanics has been supplying Laminated Ceramic Capacitors (MLCC) and Flexible Printed Circuit Boards (RF-PCB) to Apple, so the company isn’t totally new to Apple’s supply chain. But for the first time, it will be supplying lens to the company.

EDITOR’S PICK: Apple pays a hefty amount to Samsung Display after missing OLED panel orders

The report further goes on to add that LG Innotek, which has been supplying camera modules to Apple, is also looking to expand its position within Apple Camera SCM as the company is looking for diversification of suppliers.

The development comes after the U.S. Department of Commerce puts sanctions on 11 Chinese companies for suppressing ethnic minorities in China, including O-Film Tech which provides iPhone camera modules. Apple is now expected to shift orders from Ofilm Tech to LG Innotek, which is making camera modules in factories in Gumi and Vietnam.

Apple has recently started producing iPhone 11 in India through Foxconn’s facility near Chennai. It is also being reported that the next-generation AirPods, as well as 2021 AirPods Pro, will be made in Vietnam. The company has already shifted the production of AirPods Pro to Vietnam.

China’s BOE won’t be supplying OLED panels to Samsung for Galaxy S21

Samsung was reportedly looking for new OLED screen suppliers for the OLED panels for the upcoming Galaxy S21 smartphone. The company was said to be in talks with BOE for the same but a report claims that BOE won’t be supplying panels for the next-generation Galaxy S-series smartphones.

As per the report, Samsung was in talked with BOE for the OLED panels and the Chinese brand had also sent out samples for the same. However, the quality wasn’t up to the mark as per Samsung’s standard. The report adds that even after this rejection, BOE will continue its efforts to become a supplier.

BOE

BOE is one of the world’s largest LCD panel makers and the company is now looking to expand its footprints in the OLED market as well. Along with Samsung, the company also supplied samples of OLED screens to Apple for the iPhone 12 lineup, which also didn’t make the cut because of quality issues.

To establish itself in the OLED market, China-based BOE is heavily investing in the technology and trying to become a supplier of the display panels for Apple and Samsung. Because of heavy investments and its ambitions, the company will keep trying to win orders from Samsung and Apple.

Samsung Electronics will continue to use OLED panels from Samsung Display for the upcoming Galaxy S21 lineup. When it comes to flexible OLED panels, Samsung Display has about 90 percent of the market share.

A recent report claims that BOE is supplying on-cell OLED panels with embedded touch sensors to Huawei for the Chinese giant’s upcoming Mate 40 flagship series. It is reported that BOE is the exclusive supplier for the Huawei Mate 40 while it is a co-supplier for Mate 40 Pro, along with Samsung Display and LG Display.

iQOO to showcase its flagship smartphone with 120W charging support at ChinaJoy

Vivo’s sub-brand iQOO recently unveiled its 120W Ultra-Fast charging technology after which OPPO and Realme also launched their own 125W fast charging technologies. But none of them have launched a smartphone featuring the same.

iQOO has now confirmed that the company will participate in ChinaJoy 2020 and will have a booth at the Shanghai New International Expo Center Hall E4-03 from 31st July to 3rd August. At the event, the company will be showcasing its 120W flagship smartphone.

iQOO 120W Flagship Smartphone Announcement

The company’s exhibition won’t be limited to just the flagship smartphone. It seems that along with the 120W fast-charging smartphone, the company will have eight more highlights at the event.

A live Artificial Intelligence application along with competition, devices to experience, 144Hz refresh rate comparison, among others. Additionally, it will also provide experience related to battery life, music, performance, and showcase hidden functions of iQOO smartphones at the event.

However, the highlight will be the flagship smartphone having 120W Ultra Fast Rapid Charging support. As per the company, the technology can fully charge a 4,000mAh battery within just 15 minutes.

The smartphone will have a dual-battery setup featuring an industry-first 6C cell, each one measuring 2,000mAh in size. Both batteries charge at 5V/12A (60W) through a customized chip to achieve a total charging speed of 120W with a 97 percent charging conversion rate.

With such a high charging speed, one of the concerns is heat generation. To keep the phone’s internal temperature in check, it will come with Super VC Liquid Cooling technology. Also, the charging adapter will come equipped with array type pole structure cell impedance for safety.

As for the specifications, nothing has been confirmed or revealed by the company so far. But we expect the device to come powered by the newly announced Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Plus chipset. To know more, we will have to wait for a couple of days for the official event to kick-off.

Gionee phone with a 10000mAh battery gets certified by TENAA

Since Gionee’s return last year, the manufacturer has announced a couple of phones, a handful of power banks and earphones, and even a few smartwatches. Now, it seems set to launch a phone with a really large battery capacity, one that may not require owners to purchase Gionee’s own power banks.

China’s TENAA has certified a Gionee phone with a massive 10000mAh battery capacity. The phone appears on the agency’s database as the “Gionee 20,200,418” and it has a 5.72-inch HD+ (720 x 1440) display.

There is a 2.0GHz octa-core processor under the hood and the phone will be available in 4GB, 6GB, and 8GB RAM variants with 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB of expandable storage. It has a single rear camera which is listed as a 13MP or 16MP sensor while the selfie camera is listed as a 2MP or 8MP sensor. You will also get a fingerprint scanner underneath the rear camera.

Other than the unusually large battery and the model number, another surprising detail about the phone is the Android version it is running. According to TENAA, the Gionee phone runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat. On second thought, it actually isn’t much of a surprise seeing as the Gionee K6 announced back in May runs the same version of Android. Nevertheless, it is disappointing.

The device will be available in black and blue. Its weight is 305 grams and it measures 160.6 x 75.8 x 8.4 millimeters. With respect to its design, the Gionee phone has the looks of a rugged phone. It has a metal frame with rivets on the side and it skips on glass or glasstic for a strong polycarbonate body.

If you are on the search for a phone with an insanely big battery, you should keep your eyes peeled for this Gionee phone when it eventually launches.

Alleged Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro Plus (M2007J1SC) AnTuTu listing and key details appear

The Xiaomi M2007J1SC 5G phone that was certified by the 3C authority of China earlier this month could be an upcoming flagship phone from the brand. The reason behind it was that a 120W charger was found mentioned in the 3C listing. The name of the device is not known, but it is speculated to launch as a Mi 10 series phone. Hence, it is being dubbed as Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro Plus. The smartphone is expected to debut in China in the coming month. Ahead of the alleged August launch, the Xiaomi M2007J1SC phone has appeared on AnTuTu benchmarks with an outstanding score.

The M2007J1SC scored 182,883 and 292,704 in CPU and GPU tests of AnTuTu, respectively. In the memory and UX tests, the device scored 115,687 and 96,148, respectively. The handset recorded an average benchmarking score of 687,422.

The leakster who shared the AnTuTu scores of the M2007J1SC phone through his Weibo account claimed that the AnTuTu screenshot fits perfectly on the screen of the Mi 10 series. The Xiaomi Mi 10 and Mi 10 Prov are equipped with 6.67-inch displays that support 1080 x 2340 pixels Full HD+ resolution.

Xioami (M2007J1SC) Mi 10 Pro Plus AnTuTu

Hence, it is likely that the Xiaomi Mi 10 Plus Pro phone could be coming with a 6.67-inch FHD+ AMOLED display. The display will possibly have curved edges and a punch-hole at the top-left corner. The tipster has previously claimed that the screen of the device will support a 120Hz refresh rate. The Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro are equipped with 90Hz refresh rate supporting displays.

There were reports that the M2007J1SC has a 108-megapixel main camera. However, the tipster seems to be saying that instead of the 108-megapixel lens, the phone will have a 48-megapixel sensor. This information corroborates with XDA’s report that claimed that the M2007J1SC phone could be sporting at least three rear cameras. Apart from the main shooter, it is expected to come with an ultrawide lens that can also capture macro shots and a periscope lens with high optical zoom capabilities.

The M2007J1SC could be powered by the latest Snapdragon 865 Plus mobile platform. The other details of the phone currently under wraps.

DxOMark: LG V60 ThinQ 5G doesn’t measure up to this year’s flagships

The LG V60 ThinQ launched back in February but the device just got reviewed by DxOMark. The review of the triple-rear camera-toting phone shows that LG’s flagship can’t hold its own against not only this year’s flagships but also those from last year.

LG V60 ThinQ 5G DxOMark featured
DxOMark has given the LG V60 ThinQ 5G an overall score of 100 points which is broken down into 103 for photos and 93 for videos. With this score, the LG flagship is in the same bracket with phones such as the Galaxy S9+ and Pixel 3a. When compared to the LG G8 ThinQ, it only performs better in video recording.

The review says the phone’s lack of a telephoto lens means it can’t measure up to its competitors in terms of zoom. It also says its texture and noise levels are also below those of other flagships.

It is not all bad for the LG V60 ThinQ. Its ultra-wide angle camera has a wider field of view than many other phones and it is great for taking pictures in high-contrast conditions as a result of its good dynamic range.

EDITOR’S PICK: Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro selfie cam isn’t flagship-level: DXOMark Selfie camera review

The ultrawide angle camera may have a wider field of view but distortion is not as corrected as that of the OnePlus 8 Pro whose field of view is similar to that of the V60 ThinQ.

If you want to shoot in low-light with the flash, the LG V60 ThinQ 5G will disappoint as it overexposes the subject while the background is underexposed. Better phones are able to achieve good subject exposure while still capturing sufficient background details.

LG V60 ThinQ 5G DxOMark

When it comes to videos, the LG V60 ThinQ is great in bright outdoor conditions and under typical indoor lighting. Unfortunately, exposure drops in low-light. DXOMark praises its autofocus while recording and attributes it to fast focus convergence and good tracking with smooth transitions.

DXOMark concludes the review by saying the LG V60 ThinQ 5G will actually suffice for a lot of people as long as camera performance isn’t top on their list. Its dual-screen accessory and large battery capacity among other features make it a pretty interesting device that will make owners happy.

Samsung may use the 5nm Exynos 1000 on the Galaxy S21 Ultra only – Rumour

Samsung‘s 2020 Galaxy S20 flagship series features the Galaxy S20 Ultra which was dressed in the best of hardware including the camera configuration and that was well received. There are indications that the tech giant may stick with the same strategy with the Galaxy S21 Ultra.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra
Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra

Recent rumours tip that the Korean tech giant may be planning to utilise the unannounced 5nm Exynos 1000 processor solely for the Galaxy S21 Ultra in addition to the obvious upgrades such as more RAM, bigger battery, and others. The tipster also stated that the customary Galaxy S21 may highlight an Exynos 991 or Exynos 992, whatever Samsung chooses to name it toward the end.

He likewise expresses that the Exynos 990 was thought of, however taking a gander at how the processor failed to major up with the Snapdragon 865, it’s to some degree evident that Samsung will forgo utilizing this in its next lead run for 2021. Prior, it was rumoured that the Snapdragon 875 was excessively costly, driving Samsung to look for another option. Normally, the Galaxy S21 isn’t expected until 2021, so Samsung has a few to months to choose what kind of processor will be available in each model.

The Exynos 991, or Exynos 992 could be utilized to bring down the retail cost of the Galaxy S21, as Samsung will allegedly stay with a 60Hz refresh rate alternative with the base model to cut down the expense. While this may incense a lot of clients, Samsung needs to utilize such measures and forestall its flagship mobile phone prices from arriving at another ‘high’. Fortunately, since Samsung hasn’t formally affirmed this data, it’s ideal to consume it with a pinch of salt until it is official.

OnePlus One will soon run Android 10, courtesy of LineageOS 17.1

OnePlus One was the Chinese smartphone maker’s first-ever handset. It launched in 2014 with Android KitKat. The device got official support up to Marshmallow. Since it is popular in the custom ROM community, the phone has received multiple ROMs with every new Android release thereafter. Now, even after six years from its launch, the handset is getting Android 10 support, thanks to LineageOS 17.1.

OnePlus One Featured

LineageOS 17.1 builds based on Android 10 began to release for supported devices from April 2020. Since then, new devices have been added support for the ROM. OnePlus One is the latest phone to get support for the release.

Anyway, it is worth noting that builds for OnePlus’ fist smartphone are yet to go live. But we expect it to happen anytime soon. Also, if you are wondering to install it on your old phone, do note that initial builds may have bugs. That’s because LineageOS 17.1 will be the first-ever Android 10 custom ROM for the OnePlus One.

On the other hand, if you still happen to have an OnePlus One, it would be probably laying somewhere around in a drawer collecting dust. Hence, it won’t be a problem installing a buggy custom ROM on a handset, which has been sitting idle without any use.

Xiaomi announces Mi Protective Glass for Redmi Note 9 Pro series

One phone accessory that has become really popular since touchscreen phones became mainstream is the screen protector. A screen protector can be made from a plastic film or can be made of glass, however, the aim is the same – to protect the display. Today, Xiaomi has announced the Mi Protective Glass for the Redmi Note 9 Pro and Redmi Note 9 Pro Max.

The screen protector is made using Accessory Glass by Corning which is said to be an alkali-aluminosilicate glass with better protection than the one offered by generic soda-lime tempered glass. Compared to soda-lime tempered glass, this provides 5x the protection. Xiaomi says the glass has 9H hardness and claims it offers superior damage protection.

This is not the first Mi Protective Glass to be announced by Xiaomi. The manufacturer also announced for the Redmi Note 8 series last year. Just like the one for the Redmi Note 8 series, this too has a notch even though the Redmi Note 9 and Redmi Note 9 Pro Max have punch holes.

Mi Protective Glass for Redmi Note 9 Pro series

Actually, both the Redmi Note 9 Pro and Redmi Note 9 Pro Max phones have Gorilla Glass 5 protection on both sides. Nevertheless, the Mi Protective Glass should provide additional protection for the displays of the two devices.

Xiaomi is yet to announce the price of the tempered glass but we believe it will not sell for more than ₹599 (~$8) when it goes on sale on July 30.

Motorola RAZR 2020 renders leak to give us our first glimpse of the 5G flip phone

Last year, Motorola launched the Razr flip phone with a flexible OLED screen. The phone was adjudged to be a cool phone but with some inferior specs compared to existing flagship models expected in 2020. However, it was well-received among fans and that has prompted Motorola to hatch plans to release the RAZR 2020 which is already in the works.Motorola RAZR 2020

Right now, renders of the RAZR 2020 has leaked online, thanks to tipster Evan Blass (@evleaks). According to the tipster, the phone bears the codename Odyssey and is also known as RAZR 5G. That is obviously because it will be powered by a Snapdragon 765G SoC which supports 5G connectivity.

The renders come in a Mercury Silver colour which confirms the rumour that the clamshell phone may arrive in a Mercury Silver colour edition. The designs similar in all the visible aspects to the RAZR launched in 2019.

The Motorola Razr 5G is expected to house a 6.2-inch Flex View P-OLED flexible display. It may come with a secondary Quick View G-OLED screen of 2.7 inches. The Lenovo-owned company is expected to launch the Razr 5G with improved cameras as compared to its 4G LTE variant. Instead of a 5-megapixel front camera, the Razr 5G is likely to house a 20-megapixel selfie snapper. The 16-megapixel rear camera could be swapped for a 48-megapixel Samsung GM1 sensor.

Further, the RAZR 2020 was certified by 3C in China showing the presence of 18W fast charge support as against 15W on its predecessor. The Razr 5G is also expected to house a 2,845mAh battery as against a 2,510mAh battery on the Razr 4G.

Tipster @jon_prosser had earlier tipped over two weeks back that the smartphone will launch on the said date. Motorola‘s Moto G9 Plus had earlier made an appearance in a leak revealing the likely retail price. The smartphone also clinched EEC certification. The TUV Rheinland’s certification pages show the battery capacity and charging speeds. This includes the presence of a large 4700mAh battery and a super-fast 30W charging support. The two model numbers could be that there may be two variants, perhaps the Moto G9 alongside the G9 Plus. Moto G9 Plus TUV Rheinland

Earlier on, the device was certified by EEC which reveal the presence of up to 4GB of RAM as well as internal storage of 128GB. If we are to hudge by the number of certifications the mobile phone has garnered, it is safe to assume that the launch is by the corner. Motorola may just spring a surprise and announce the models in one of its key markets in the coming weeks without any pre-launch teaser.
