Xiaomi’s Mi Calendar now available on Play Store, Limited to its devices for now

Smartphone OEMs offer a ton of first-party system apps. These apps used to get updates only when the company rolls out system update. That changed over the years as brands began to publish their system apps on the Google Play Store and their respective official app store to bring new features to users on a frequent basis. Following the trend, Xiaomi’s Mi Calendar is the latest app to make it to the Play Store with version 12.0.0.3.

Xiaomi Mi Calendar

Xiaomi is known for including a number of system apps on its MIUI Android skin. Over the past few years, the Chinese smartphone maker has gradually published most of its app on the Google Play Store as well as on its official app store called GetApps.

By doing so, it has been able to push new features and bug fixes quicker than ever before. Now, the company’s Mi Calendar app also joins this list with the new 12.0.0.3 version.

Android Police points out that the first-ever version of Mi Calendar on Play Store does not bring anything new to the table. But we expect the brand to soon introduce new features and fixes on a regular basis in the near future.

Currently, the Mi Calendar app can be only installed on Xiaomi, Redmi, and Poco branded handsets running MIUI Android skin. But it might be made available for other devices going by the description on the Play Store listing page.

LG launches the TONE free HBS-FN6 TWS earbuds with a sterilizing case as an AirPods rival

Since Apple hit gold with its Airpods bearable devices, there have been lots of contenders, each striving for a piece of the pie in the rapidly-growing “hearables” market. Apart from the improvement in the design and battery life, we have seen a few innovations but one that stands out is LG‘s invention.AirPods-look-alike

The Korean giant earlier this year launched the Tone Free true wireless earbuds in the US with a UVnano charging case which sterilises the earbuds. The tech giant has again launched a higher-end model dubbed TONE free HBS-FN6 TWS earbuds which also has “industry-first” UVnano case.LG HBS-FN6 earbuds

The new self-sterilizing earbuds utilise a “canal-type” design which the company says has a more comfortable fit than the “semi-open” earlier model. The earbuds also promise “lifelike audio” quality powered by Meridian, noise isolation functionality, IPX4 water resistance, easy Google Assistant and Siri access, as well as six hours of battery life as standard and up to 18 hours of additional endurance from the case.

As you may have figured, the charging case performs dual functions of charging the headphones and also sterilizing the earbuds by eliminating 99.9 percent of E. coli and S. aureus from the hypoallergenic silicone ear gel and inner mesh of the HBS-FN6 buds. LG noted that, “several studies have shown that earbuds can harbour more bacteria than a kitchen cutting board”. This can potentially lead to ear infections.”LG TONE free HBS-FN6 TWS earbuds

LG didn’t reveal the retail price of the new earbuds but did say that Tone Free family is scheduled to expand to “key European and American markets starting next month”.

Amazon’s solution to dealing with fake products is a Counterfeit Crimes Unit

If you shop online, there is a high chance you have come across a counterfeit product. Not only are counterfeits (especially electronics) dangerous, they also hurt the reputation of the site they were purchased from. Amazon has come up with another solution which is a Counterfeit Crimes Unit (CCU).

Amazon

The CCU will take a different approach to dealing with fake products. Rather than just identifying and blocking listings of these fake products, the team which includes former federal prosecutors, experienced investigators, and data analysts will go after the counterfeiters. They will work with law enforcement officials and make it easier to file lawsuits against the offenders.

Amazon says it spent over half a billion dollars fighting fraud and counterfeit products last year. It also revealed it has over 8000 employees whose tasks include finding and taking down counterfeit products. In 2019 alone, it shut down 6 billion suspected bad listings

The bane of counterfeit products has affected Amazon greatly. For example, Nike is said to no longer sell its products directly on Amazon. The retail giant also has five of its foreign websites on a White House’ list of notorious markets.

Report: Samsung will ship Galaxy S20 Fan Edition aka S20 Lite in October

The first half of 2020 did not go as planned for most companies, including Samsung whose Galaxy S20 series is leading up to be the worst-performing phones in the Galaxy S series. To overcome this situation, the South Korean tech giant is expected to ship three premium smartphones starting from August till October.

Samsung Galaxy S20 series

As per a leak from earlier this month, Samsung is expected to hold an ‘Unpacked’ launch event on August 5 to announce Galaxy Note 20 series and Galaxy Fold 2. The company might also unveil Galaxy Watch 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 5G at the same event.

Now, according to a report by ETNews (via SlashGear), Samsung will not be shipping these devices at one go. Rather, it will start shipping each device with an interval of a month.

The report says Samsung will be first shipping the Galaxy Note 20 series in August, which is expected to include regular Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. Followed by that in September, the company will ship the long-awaited Galaxy Fold 2.

Then, in October, it will be shipping the recently leaked Galaxy S20 Fan Edition (FE). This handset is said to be the successor of Galaxy S10 Lite from earlier this year. But for some unknown reasons, the company has changed its branding.

Between all this, Samsung will be also shipping the Galaxy Z Flip 5G but details regarding its exact shipping period is unknown except for the fact that it is being mass manufactured.

As a whole, Samsung will be having a busy schedule for the second half of 2020 to right the incurred losses in the first half of the year due to the COVID-19 global pandemic.

Samsung ramps up semiconductor R&D for the development of new K-Chips

Samsung is apparently raising its efforts into research and development for its semiconductor business to pursue its vision of new K-Chip technology. The South Korean tech giant has already planned academic partnerships and collaborations across its home country.

Samsung Exynos 990 featured

Many are unaware that Samsung has its own foundry and manufactures chips as well. While it heavily uses its own designs, there were moments where its own designs had paled in comparison to its competitors. A notable example would be The Exynos 990 SoC being replaced by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 SoC after the latter was proven to provide better performance overall.

This had also led to the feeling of “humiliation” within the company’s mobile chip division. Thus, it arrives as no surprise that Samsung is now placing an increased emphasis on its semiconductor business through its research and development teams. Furthermore, the company has been focusing on its artificial intelligence solutions as well, with Dr. Sebastian Seung being promoted from Chief Research Scientist to head of Samsung Research.

Samsung

One of the reasons why Samsung is investing heavily within its home country is also to bolster the economy during this time of crisis. Although, it is still too early to determine just how well or noteworthy the new “K-Chips” actually perform. Samsung has placed its bets on this new technology and is confident in its ability thus far, but the competition is stiff with industry giants like Qualcomm also moving ahead with their own plans.

OnePlus CEO reveals how OnePlus plans on differentiating its upcoming TVs

Back in 2019, OnePlus entered the TV market with its own offering of smart TVs. The OnePlus TV Q1 and Q1 Pro marked its entry into the category and aimed at the premium segment of the market. Now, OnePlus is planning on launching more affordable offerings as well, whilst also focusing on differentiating its products from its competitors.

OnePlus CEO, Pete Lau, recently gave an interview with AndroidCentral where he discussed the upcoming TV lineup. The senior executive stated that the company is heavily invested in the design of all of its offerings, believing that design is one of the most crucial aspects through which a product is differentiated. This will rely on two key factors, namely design and user experience.

OnePlus

Furthermore, Lau mentioned that despite OnePlus’ focus on the budget segment, the company will not be compromising in terms of design. This is backed by the company’s upcoming TV featuring an ultra thin design of just 6.9mm. To put this thinness into perspective, the OnePlus 8 was placed against the TV as a comparison. Keep in mind, the TV will not just be this slim all throughout, and will likely have certain areas like the bottom being thicker due to necessary components.

For audio, Pete stated that the company will be using an innovative acoustic arrangement, which will have its speakers rotated by 90 degrees. This allowed the company to house two large full range speakers that offer “50% deeper bass.” According to the senior official, the main idea was to deliver a “burdenless experience” and have the TV be a “projection of the user’s personality.”

OnePlus Smart TV Pricing Teased

OnePlus is also trimming the bezels down for its upcoming lineup. This is a feature more common on premium segments rather than the budget one. Lau revealed that the new TVs will have a high screen to body ratio of 95 percent which will be coupled with a 93% DCI-P3 color gamut that will make it “stand out as a better viewing experience among TVs in the segment.”

ARM announces support for updateable GPU drivers

With the launch of Snapdragon 865 and Snapdragon 765/765G SoCs, Qualcomm announced support for updateable GPU drivers via app store. Xiaomi became the first OEM to deliver driver update to Adreno 650 GPU present in its Mi 10, Mi 10 Pro, and Redmi K30 Pro. Now, following the footsteps of Qualcomm, ARM also announces similar support for its Mali GPUs.

ARM Mali Updateable GPU Drivers

GPU driver updates on Android has been hindered for years as it takes months for OEMs to push them via OTA update. To solve this problem, Qualcomm introduced updateable GPU drivers through smartphone manufacturer’s default app store like Google Play Store.

This way users can get access to new features from OpenGL or Vulkan API without waiting for OTA system updates from the manufacturers. Also, graphic performances and bug fixes can be easily maintained with this approach just like on PCs.

Thus, realizing the benefits of this move, ARM has also joined the bandwagon but did not reveal the GPUs that will support it. As XDA Developers points out, it could be initially supported by the newly announced Mali-G78 GPU, which debuted alongside Cortex-A78 CPU architecture.

Additionally, ARM also announced support for Android GPU Inspector for its upcoming GPUs, which is an open-source profiling tool that helps game developers to optimize graphic performance.

Pokémon Go Grandpa has evolved, now uses 64 smartphones

Taiwan’s famous Pokémon Go Grandpa has seemingly evolved into his ultimate state. The elderly Pokémon lover has upgraded his bike, which now carries a whopping 64 smartphones that all play Pokémon Go.

Back in 2018, Pokémon Go Grandpa was discovered and shared by a user on Reddit that instantly blew up in popularity. The 72 year old person was discovered playing the game with 6 smartphones attached to his bike. The man named Chen San-yuan is a retired Feng Shui master and an avid Pokémon Go fan, with his nickname being derived from his love for the game.

Chen said that he started playing the game after his grandson introduced him to it. Now, he plays nearly 20 hours a day 5 to 6 days a week playing it, until his phone’s battery gets exhausted. But apparently that did not deter the elder gamer, as he simply added the number of smartphones on his bike as a solution. Furthermore, he even made a solution to mount them on his bike and plug a charge in for all of them, keeping them charged and powered up on the go.

Pokemon

However, what is glaringly obvious is that the man knew no bounds as he kept adding the number of smartphones. Starting from 6 back 2018, Pokémon Go Grandpa has now evolved his bike to carry 64 smartphones. The layout is quite interesting, to say the least, and highly resembles the pattern a peacock’s feathers would when unfurled. So, it’s safe to say that Pokémon Go Grandpa is definitely out to catch em all.

Xiaomi patents a foldable phone in which both front and rear cameras work together

A new Xiaomi patent has recently surfaced online. It is for a new foldable smartphone but with a unique aspect. While most handsets have independently functioning front and rear camera modules, this one has both of them run together at the same time.

The Chinese tech giant had submitted the patent to the China National Intellectual Property Office, which was finally approved earlier this week. The patent also arrives with images that reveal the smartphone layout and interesting camera placements. Looking at these images, it would seem that the smartphone features 3 image sensors. Two of these sensors can be found together while the lone camera is housed on the opposite side.

In recent times, OEMs have adopted more and more sensors on the rear and front sides. However, raising the number of cameras also increased the cost of the device. Thus, Xiaomi has come up with an interesting solution to this issue through its new foldable smartphone patent, which will have the device use all three cameras when folded, making it a triple camera setup without a third sensor on the rear.

Xiaomi

The images reveal that when the device is folded through its hinge mechanism, the lone sensor falls right below and slightly ahead of the dual camera setup. In other words, folding the phone enhances its photographic qualities by raising the number of sensors. Unfortunately, finer details regarding the smartphone or its other specs have not been described and this might be Xiaomi’s attempt to cover all bases. Although, it is an interesting and practical take at lowering future foldable smartphones’ costs.

OnePlus is all set to launch its all-new OnePlus Smart TV series with affordable pricing in the Indian market on 2nd July. Now, just days before the official launch, the company has started taking pre-orders for the same.

Those who are interesting in this upcoming OnePlus TV series can now pre-order the product from Amazon.in. Those who pre-book the TV series by 2nd July can get the 2-Year Extended Warranty for ₹1,000 instead of its full price of ₹3,000.

Also, they’ll get ₹1,000 cashback on Amazon Pay account, thus rendering the extended warranty for free. However, the company has put up a condition that the user needs to complete the ordering process before 5th August.

So far, the company has confirmed that the upcoming OnePlus TV series with affordable pricing will feature a bezel-less ‘Cinematic’ display with 93 percent DCI-P3 color gamut and Dolby Vision support. It is also teased to feature a 95 percent screen-to-body ratio, which is really something to look forward to in a budget model.

OnePlus has also revealed that the pricing will start under ₹20,000, which is very low compared to the pricing of the OnePlus TV Q1 series that was launched in India last year. However, the company is yet to reveal more details about the TVs.

If the leaks and reports are to be believed, then the Chinese company is all set to launch two TV models in India — 32-inch and 43-inch as they have been certified by Bluetooth SIG ahead of the launch, along with their remotes.

Some are speculating that the upcoming affordable OnePlus TV units share the same hardware as the recently launched Realme Smart TV models. This might be true as both the companies are part of BBK Electronics. However, to know if the reports are true or not, we’ll have to wait for a few more days for the official launch event to take place.

Meanwhile, the company is also set to launch a new budget smartphone series in the Indian market in July this year. The phone has been leaked as OnePlus 8 Lite and OnePlus Z but could get launched as OnePlus Nord. While the exact launch date is not yet known, the company has officially announced this new affordable smartphone series.
