LG‘s latest premium smartphone, the LG Velvet was first unveiled in South Korea around the early part of May 2020. The company has now launched the Velvet 5G in Europe. The smartphone is already up for pre-order on LG’s official online store in Italy. Also. it is expected to be available in Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland and Spain.
The Velvet 5G carries a retail price of €650 but what obviously stands out is loads of goodies worth €400 available to those who pre-order the phone. Those who pre-order the phone before the end of the month will get the LG Dual Screen accessory, LG Tone Free TWS earbuds and a protective cover for the phone.
The Velvet 5G features a 6.9-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2460 x 1080 pixel and 20.5:9 aspect ratio. The display utilises a waterdrop notch that is home to a 16MP camera. Powering the phone is the Snapdragon 765G mobile platform which brings 5G support with its built-in modem. There is 8GB of RAM and 128GB of UFS 2.1 storage that can be expanded to up to an extra 2TB via the MicroSD card slot.
At the rear, the phone sports a pretty nice triple rear camera design that mimics a falling raindrop. The camera setup includes a 48MP primary camera, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera, and a 5MP depth sensor.
The smartphone will be launching soon in North and South America, the Middle East, Asia and Africa. However, LG might launch the rumoured 4G version in some of the regions.
According to a screenshot shared on Weibo by Digital Chat Station, the Huawei Enjoy 20 Pro will have a 6.5-inch display with a 2400 x 1080 resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate. The screen-to-body ratio is also revealed to be 91.2%.
The phone is powered by MediaTek’s MT6873 chipset a.k.a. Dimensity 800. The processor will draw power from a 4000mAh battery with support for 22.5W fast charging via a USB Type-C port. Sadly, there is no mention of the RAM and storage capacity.
For cameras, the Huawei Enjoy 20 Pro packs a 48MP primary camera paired with an 8MP ultrawide angle camera and a 2MP macro camera. The selfie camera is a 16MP sensor with an f/2.0 aperture.
The phone’s dimensions are given as 160 x 75.32 x 8.35 millimeters while the weight is 182 grams. Huawei will ship it with EMUI 10 based on Android 10 out of the box.
Do the above specs look familiar? Yes, they do. The Enjoy 20 Pro is actually a rebadged Huawei Enjoy Z 5G for the offline market. The leak also includes a press render (above) of the device which further confirms that this is a rebadged Enjoy Z.
Samsung recently rolled out a new system update for Galaxy M31 after the re-release of April 2020 security patch. The latest build comes with version M315FXXU1ATE1. According to the changelog, the new OTA brings Discover app to the phone.
1 of 2
The new update for Galaxy M31 weighing 416.03 MB brings nothing but a system app called Discover for monetization purpose. This app is enabled by default on reboot after installation of the OTA.
The Discover app is integrated into One UI Home, the default launcher on Samsung smartphones. It can be accessed by opening the app drawer.
As you can see from the screenshots attached below, the Discover tab displays a set of promoted applications based on the interests selected before setting it up. Tapping on any of these apps will take you to the Galaxy Store to download them.
1 of 4
Fortunately, this tab can be easily disabled by simply going to Home screen settings through the three-dot menu in the app drawer.
The T&C page for Samsung Discover also mentions the inclusion of advertisements from third-parties. But so far, I haven’t encountered any but maybe it will begin to pop-up in the future.
Having said that, we are not sure if the Discover app is available on other Samsung smartphones apart from Galaxy M31.

Motorola started offering very interesting mid-rangers at very affordable prices. It is kinda evident that Lenovo is putting a lot of effort into this brand by releasing fewer devices through its own brand and giving the priority to Motorola. We believe the most interesting Motorola affordable phones launched in the last period is the Motorola One Fusion+, which just debuted in the Indian market at a very hot price. It will be very interesting to see whether this brand will be able to compete with the best Chinese giants out there. Here, we compared it with two other best-buys of the same segment sold in the Indian market: POCO X2 and Realme 6 Pro.
Motorola One Fusion+ vs Xiaomi POCO X2 vs Realme 6 Pro

Design
If you look at the above images, you will notice that Motorola One Fusion+ sports a full screen display with no notch or holes, while POCO X2 and Realme 6 Pro have a dual punch-hole. That is why Motorola One Fusion+ has a motorized pop-up front camera. But the One Fusion+ is like a dual-sided medal: it offers a holeless display, but it is not made of premium materials. Instead, it has a plastic body like the ones you can find on entry-level phones. Instead, the POCO X2 offers a glass back and an aluminum frame just like premium flagships. That is why POCO X2 would be my choice. Realme 6 Pro sits in the middle with a glass back and a plastic frame. Motorola One Fusion+, POCO X2, and Realme 6 Pro are all splash resistant phones.
Display
OLED displays are trending, but you do not get any with this trio of devices. They all feature an IPS panels, but POCO X2 remains very interesting since it offers a high 120 Hz refresh rate and the HDR10 certification for better image quality, besides a wider display diagonal. Right after in the display ranking we got the Realme 6 Pro with a 90 Hz refresh rate, while Motorola One Fusion+ sports an unsurprising IPS panel with a standard refresh rate and no other interesting technologies.
Specs & Software
You can get slightly better performances with the POCO X2 since it features a slightly more powerful chipset: the Snapdragon 730G is older than the Snapdragon 720G found on the Realme 6 Pro, but it offers amazing CPU and GPU performance. But if you go for the Realme 6 Pro, you won’t lose so much. In both cases, you get up to 8 GB of RAM and UFS 2.1 internal storage. Motorola One Fusion+ comes with the vanilla Snapdragon 730 (it is basically a 730G with an inferior GPU) and just 6 GB of RAM.
Camera
The most convincing camera department belongs to the Realme 6 Pro: the only one to offer a telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom. It has a quad camera with a 64 MP main sensor, a 12 MP telephoto lens, an 8 MP ultrawide sensor and a 2 MP macro camera. Further, it is the only one with an ultrawide dual front camera (the POCO X2 has a secondary depth sensor instead of an ultrawide lens).
Battery
Motorola One Fusion+ is the king of battery life not only because of its higher battery capacity (whopping 5000 mAh) but also because it has a more efficient display with a standard refresh rate. Realme 6 Pro has the smallest battery but still more than sufficient, and it features the fastest charging technology with a 30W power.
Price
Motorola One Fusion+ is priced Rs. 16,999 (roughly $223) in India (6/128 GB), POCO X2 costs Rs. 15,999 or $210 (6/64 GB), and Realme 6 Pro is actually priced Rs. 17,999 ($236) in its base variant (6/64 GB). With those prices, POCO X2 looks like the most interesting device of this trio due to its premium design, better display, great hardware, and pretty nice battery. But Realme 6 Pro offers better cameras, while Motorola One Fusion+ has longer battery life.

OPPO A72

Samsung and OnePlus have announced plans to manufacture most of their televisions locally in India. The companies are considering it to benefit from the zero import duties on the key component – open cell TV panel. Also, this will help them prevent any issues with the supply chain in the future.
In 2018, the Indian government imposed duties on open cell TV panels. This made Samsung halt its TV production in the country. Since then, the company has been importing finished products from Vietnam at zero duties through the free trade agreement route.
But now, as the government had reduced the duties on open cell panels to zero in 2019, Samsung has once again decided to manufacture TVs in India along with OnePlus according to three senior industry executives.
Open cell panel accounts for 70% of a TV’s manufacturing cost. Thus, the taxes levied on it play a key role in where the companies produce their televisions.
According to the report by The Economic Times, both Samsung and OnePlus have partnered with Chinese electronics company Skyworth to manufacture their TVs in its Hyderabad facility.
This marks OnePlus’ entry into making TVs in India like its smartphones. The company has announced to launch budget smart TVs in July. This will help it in the long run.
Additionally, Samsung has also expanded its existing partnership with Indian contract manufacturer Dixon Technologies to manufacture TVs ranging between 43 to 58-inches. Dixon has been producing 32-inch and 43-inch TV models for Samsung since January 2020. But now, that contract has been given to Skyworth.
Samsung has revealed that about 85-90% televisions sold in India will be now manufactured locally. Apart from these two companies, LG, Sony, Xiaomi, and Panasonic have already been making TVs in the country.
A research agency Tuo Institute of Industrial Research, a subsidiary of Jibang Consulting, has announced the revenue and ranking of the top ten IC design companies in the world in the first quarter of 2020.
The report shows that Qualcomm surpassed Broadcom with a Q1 2020 revenue of $4.1 billion to return to the number one position. The revenue represents an increase of 10.2% over the same period last year. Broadcom is in the second position with a gross revenue of US$4.08 billion. The US semiconductor giant’s revenue was down 2.4% year-on-year. Broadcom’s revenue from the semiconductor division is said to have declined for five consecutive quarters due to market competition and Sino-US trade frictions. making the ranking of first and second place transposition. In addition to the continuous impact of the Sino-US trade dispute, Broadcom is also affected by the recent decline in the shipment of mobile phones by major customers such as Apple.
Nvidia ranked third with revenue of US$2.95 billion, a year-on-year increase of 39.6%. In addition, MediaTek, AMD, Xilinx, Marvell, Novatek, Realtek, and Synapsis also emerge among the top ten.

ZTE Corporation names Ni Fei, the Co-founder and President of Nubia Technology as the company’s new President of Mobile Devices. Ni Fei will continue to serve both positions according to the company. He will be taking over this post from Xu Feng, who is also the Senior Vice President (SVP) of ZTE.
Ni Fei, President of ZTE Mobile Devices and Nubia Technology
Ni Fei joined ZTE in 2001 and worked in the company’s consumer product operation from 2004 till 2012 when he established Nubia. It started off as a wholly-owned subsidiary of ZTE. But the brand split off from the parent company and became an independent entity in 2015. Since its inception back in 2012, Ni Fei acted as the General Manager. In May 2019 he was named President of Nubia Technology.
His leadership gave birth to Nubia Z5, which was China’s first smartphone to support all the network bands in the year 2012. Other popular devices during his reign include Nubia Z9 (2015) and Nubia Z17S (2017) – bezel-less smartphones in their times. Above all, Ni Fei is well-known for launching Redmagic, a lineup of gaming smartphones for a niche audience.
Under his leadership, the parent company is likely hoping to expand this division, which hasn’t seen success as its rivals. ZTE also adds Ni Fei will fulfill the medium and long-term goals of the company’s 5G and IoT technologies.
As per the press release, ZTE has been committed to developing a series of diversified 5G terminal devices portfolio. It will try to satisfy the diverse requirements of operators, enterprise users, and consumers in multiple service scenarios. As for the consumer market, it will bring new mobile phones to its home country China by exploring the market requirements brought by new technologies and experiences.
As the year crosses the half yearly mark, we approach the launch period of flagship smartphones from various OEMs. One major launch which is highly anticipated is for the upcoming Huawei Mate 40 series. Many rumors and reports have already surfaced online, but a recent one suggests a new Side-Touch interface for the device’s camera system.
Huawei Technologies filed a new design patent with CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration) back in July 2019, which was published earlier today (16th June 2020). The patent arrives with 10 images that detailed a new Side-Touch camera interface. This new interface includes a shutter button and other necessary functions like flash settings, white balance, camera mode, and more.
This interface can be found on the edges of the curved display on either side. The interface is even capable of zoom control from the side and an HDR icon. Users can also access the gallery from here. The new Side-Touch interface was probably made to incorporate all the necessary functions on the side, providing a non-intrusive and clear view of the frame in front of the user.
Looking at the device in the patent, a narrow notch that houses a dual camera setup on the front, while the rear doesn’t depict a rear camera. The rear doesn’t have any visible camera module, which may be suggestive of a disappearing image lens technology similar to the OnePlus Concept One smartphone. Although, that seems unlikely at the moment.
This patented smartphone could be the upcoming Huawei Mate 40 series that is expected to launch around September of October 2020. Previously, we had reported on a ring touch interface around the round camera module on the rear. Thus, this patent might just be Huawei’s attempt in covering all bases. So, stay tuned as we will provide any updates regarding the Mate 40 series.

With each passing generation, smartphone vendors have been improving and, in certain cases, even raising the number of image sensors for their handset offerings. Now, a recent Samsung patent has revealed a new device that features a whopping 6 cameras on the rear, including a periscopic lens.
The South Korean tech giant applied for this patent back in December 2019 with the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) which was published earlier this week on June 11. While the 6 sensor camera module is eye catching, the main aspect regarding this camera module is its tilting mechanism for its sensors. Look at the images in the patent, we can observe the image sensors being able to tilt.
Images Via LetsGoDigital
According to the patent, the Samsung smartphone uses 5 wide angle image sensors with a 28mm focal length on the rear alongside a telephoto lens. These sensors are arranged horizontally with three on each row and an LED flash. In the normal mode, these cameras face the regular forward direction, but in the “active mode,” they can tilt towards the horizontally or vertically.
This enables the sensors to achieve a wider focal length overall and may even help in producing panoramic shots without moving the smartphone itself. Furthermore, the tilting lenses are also said to offer a ‘pano-bokeh effect,’ which implied blurred backgrounds on a panoramic image. This moving lens technology could also have the 5 wide angle sensors work simultaneously to offer a better image that is stitched together.
Unfortunately, this form of array cameras are still too expensive to mass produce, but do offer various advantages. An example being improved low light shots through the use of the array camera module. Regular images could also have a higher dynamic range and the bokeh effect could target more subjects individually as well.
The Samsung patent also goes in depth regarding the shortfalls of this system, with a notable one being the size of the camera module. Since it will be housed in a flagship device, the device may need to have a popup mechanism to house the sensor to achieve the movement, while maintaining thinness. Unfortunately, it is unknown if Samsung would actually develop and sell the device in the near future, but the technology does offer a glimpse into the future generations of smartphones.

A new study has resulted in an interesting finding. Using light bulbs, one can now listen in on conversations from a distance. The study was conducted by researches at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev and the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel.
In the study, it was found that a conventional light bud can be used to eavesdrop on conversations. If a conversation is in close proximity to a light bulb, then a third party can listen in on it from distances as far as 25 meters away. This method has been labeled as Lamphone and requires a remote electro-optical sensor to achieve the near science fictional results.
Explaining how the method works, the remote electro-optical sensor analyzes the changes in the light bulb’s frequency response to sound waves. While recently, methods of eavesdropping on conversations had required just a compromised smart device or other smart home appliances, this process can work from just a regular light bulb.
According to the study, “Lamphone recovers sound optically via an electro-optical sensor which is directed at a hanging bulb.” In other words, the sensor has to be directly pointed at the light source through a telescope and a voice-to-text application like Google Speech. Notably, the range of this method can also be increased by using a larger and more powerful microscope.
The electro-optical sensor analyzes the subtle vibrations on the surface of the light bulb. This data is then run through specially developed algorithms from the researchers to isolate an audio signal from an optical signal. The output is then transcribed through a voice-to-text application, which in turn gives out the end result that is the conversation.
Interestingly, this process even works on identifying singing as well, with apps like Shazam and SoundHound being able to recognize the songs from 25 meters away. Now, before you go switching your light bulbs, there are a lot of shortcomings to this process. The bulb needs to be hanging from the ceiling and needs to be in a clear vision of the sensor. Furthermore, the conversation or music being played would have to be loud enough to cause the vibration on the surface of the bulb. So while it does seem scary enough, it is quite difficult to pull off in a real world scenario.
Back in April, Motorola launched its first flagship smartphone in years. This marked the company’s return to the premium segments. But now, reports have been coming in regarding a major issue that is affecting the display of various Motorola Edge+ users.

Users of the flagship device have been complaining about unknown purple blotches and a green tint that appears on the display of the smartphone. This is a major cause of concern for the company since the device costs a hefty $1000 price tag. According to certain Motorola Edge+ owners, purple spots appear on the edges of the display if the device is used for a long while. These eventually disappear, only to come back later on, if the device is still used for a prolonged period of time.
A significant number of users also reported on these purple spots multiplying and even growing in numbers. This isn’t the only issue with the Motorola flagship’s display as certain owners are also experiencing green tints on their smartphones’ display. At the moment, the company has acknowledged the issue and is currently working on a software fix.
One forum administrator even stated that a new software update should fix the display issues soon. The administrator also advised people to not go for an immediate replacement as the problem is likely a software issue and not due to faulty hardware. Thus, even newly purchased Motorola Edge+ units could suffer from the same issue. Unfortunately, the initial software fix which was rolled out, only fixed the issue temporarily, with users reporting on the problems of the display coming back soon after.
